People who are working from home: how much 'work' are you actually doing?

I'm still just about managing the 9 to 5 thing but my lunch breaks have gradually expanded to a comfortable 2 hrs.

I work on "daily rate" and it's based on output so I can't clock in and sit around, I need to show some input to the clients. I have "I'll commit X to Y days a month to your company" contract and "honor system" which I don't charge them for non-output days (like, I connect to VPN and check the e-mail, write some replies and log-off) and they simply sign anything I do include extras such as extended phone calls, IT problems. There is enough stuff I can work on so if I want to put :effort: there is no shortage on stuff to do. Remote working sucks rear end because my job is hands-on and gets really confusing when trying to figure out things remotely.

Other jobs are project-based or recurring (like, attend to an audit once a month, update the quality plans etc.) and that what I can do remotely. Let's say, I get a contract for 10 days of work for updating a QMS and got paid a bulk sum, I can power through in 4-5 days and just iron out details and do editing according to the client feedback. I love those jobs and they both pay better and gives me flexibility.

April was quite slow with all my clients going into hibernation and things picked up around early May and now I started doing on-site work as the clients open up (they were all essential businesses anyway).

I use the free time to work on getting new professional charters, online certification, and doing some business admin when I'm not doing my visa stuff.

Some days I just can't find the energy/motivation to do anything at all which always feels bad later on but, oh well, if you need a 4-hour depression sleep, you need a 4 hour depression sleep.

any advice on quitting a corporate job to work in brewing or baking?

so far my plan is:

1) find job in brewing or baking
2) quit corporate job

My sister got redundant and was planning to have a baby so she was kinda sitting at home while looking for new jobs but she wanted to do something in the meantime and got herself a short baking and custom birthday cake course from another local baker lady. (this is no in the UK btw, so ymmv)

In the beginning, she went hardcore marketing on social media, which came to her naturally as she's pretty much a smartphone addict. Started to make naked cakes, simple engagement or party cakes which went for surprisingly (*) good money. She started doing complex birthday cakes, especially the kid bday cakes with faeries or cartoon stuff like Spongebob went like crazy. Around the first year, she was non stop baking and also started a boutique chocolate business and held workshops (I think this was the best money/effort-wise as she could have 6-8 people or 4 couples in one day charging a cake's worth each) and she hired a college student as help.

Well, it sounds pretty swell but baking, especially boutique cakes is time intensive as gently caress. She was happy to receive her payments but it was after a one/day effort with anything that comes with having customers (last-minute changes, random rear end requests). When I ran some numbers, she was pretty much working above minimum wage but with more hours and effort. She was thinking of opening up a small bakery for scaling up her production with more assistant and poo poo but she got pregnant and then COVID hit.

I mean, she was kinda "oh I'm making more money in a day" but when you make an hour based calculation, why not become a PA or do data entry, clock out at 5 and enjoy not having to worry about anything else?

I think, with the cooking/brewing/baking is you'll probably need some food safety-related checks and maybe some insurance and lots of overhead (having to deliver the stuff you make etc.).

I don't know it's a good idea to quitting your corporate job in this environment and upcoming recession (?) to become a baker or brewer but it's also not the worst idea if you like hands-on stuff.

Definitely not the best time to be moving around. Sods law dictates that I'll change job, have lost my 2 year employment protection, and then a recession hits and I get hosed.

Thanks for the in depth response, I dunno if I'd mind making less money (or just above minimum wage) if I was happy doing the work.

I have to add, my sister has a disability in her right arm after a traffic accident so her hand and wrist articulation is quite low compared to ours so it takes a bit longer for her to do things like whisking or frosting. I think she said being a chocolatier is less effort and she was able to make more stuff and made more money due to scale (less trips for materials, can use molds to produce in higher quantities etc.)

I mean, the stuff she made looked and tasted (especially the pistachio filled Belgian chocolates I posted below) exceptionally good for someone literally had no previous baking experience and had like a couple of days "formal" training:

Craig Bond movies:

Casino Royale: Goku tier, has probably the best casting with Micheal Madsen Mads Mikkelsen (:heysexy:) and Eva Green (:swoon:). Relatively low stakes instead of Captain Planet- villain plot of the second one.

Quantum of Solace: Jaysus, that's an extremely bad one with terrible plot and forgettable action. Olga Bland-enko is bad. Can't even remember who was the villian.

Skyfall: I think the best one marginally winning due to how awesome is the second half (starting from the capture of Javier Bardem). The first half is a bit jumbled as pointed put by goons but still an overall good movies. Bardem is a p good villain and I liked the personal vendetta plot instead of "IMMA PUT WATER IN A CAVE AND RULE THE WORLD LOL"

Spectre: Uhh, that really doesn't feel like a Bond-y movie at all. Can't even remember the plot or what happened in it.

The new one: Rami Malek is a good actor but we'll see. I don't expect it to be groundbreaking. Danial Craig looks like he just wants this to be over so he doesn't dump his entire year for another Bond movie where he fights bad guys in Mars.

Feta is not a good melty cheese imo so I eat seperately like piece of shortbread+feta slice+tomato+piece of fried egg combo.

I sprinkle on top if I make shakshuka or menemen.

I only knew of shakshuka from Hey Duggee and I have have just looked the recipe up and by God that sounds good

Shakshuka is a bit :effort: so I prefer menemen which is similar but doesn't have a tomato sauce base instead have chopped tomatoes, green peppers (spicy ones, even pickled jalapenos can work in a pinch) and eggs. Some people add onions but they are objectively wrong about everything in life and should be ashamed of themselves. A clove of garlic is optional and you can chuck some slices of chorizo if you want some meat and can't find Turkish sucuk (spicy beef/lamb sausage).

J Kenji Lopez-Alt has a nice old school menemen video with western ingredients (the Turkish hot green peppers might be hard to find) here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFxXw0eSSC0
