would you call it mainstream, though? or is it still a niche nerd thing?

Ace of Baes
norebang (singing room) is everywhere, they're karaoke places where you pay for a private room with couches and a mic and catalogue to do karaoke and drink, pcbang (pc room) is also really big, which are places where you pay money to go play video games on computers
prostitution is illegal but the cops turn the other way and there are brothels everywhere
pornography is illegal in korea

Girls still hide their faces from the camera at esports events. It is pretty popular but not what I would call mainstream and it is not exactly something you would brag about being involved in.

When I was in university there was a traditional Korean (not bbq) restaurant not too far away from me. I went there multiple times and it was good. I am going to guess that it was authentic food because everyone but me was speaking Korean when I was there. But obviously many of them were bilingual and could provide excellent service.

also this one time in a thread someone asked about imperialism done at people by Japan and I learned that they were really good at it from the book Tradition, Treaties, and Trade: Qing Imperialism and Choson Korea, 1850-1910 by Kirk W. Larsen. Though the focus is on China. Also read the peace under heaven novel I guess though it is a work of fiction.
