I've become kind of addicted to smoking. Not the lame folk kind, with the roasted weedleaf, the Solaspon way. So you stick your head in the cannon and light the fuse. The way it stretches out my fake soot "head" is great. Basically gives me what looks like long, luxurious locks with impossible body and volume. Speaking of volume, I really have to make sure to keep the gunpowder amount just right so I can pull it off without waking anyone up. Been pushing the limit, too. Maybe one day I'll be able to basically make myself a cannon silencer! Gotta write that down.

Yeah I didn't pay for the powder but gently caress it, I've barely used any. Soon I'll send the memory to Sola and forget about the whole thing anyway. Probably never do it again after that. That's where I am, in the gun deck, writing about eating explosions. I would joke about a splitting headache after a long night, but I don't feel a thing. Mundane flames don't matter to me, no matter their velocity.

"No, you listen to me! I was testing this cheap gunpowder he picked up whenever we docked last because it looked like it wasn't sealed right. That means if it's old it could've gone impotent. Good for nothing but slowly burning away and making a whole lot of noise and smoke with no Bang! So tell that to Gett especially the part abouOH poo poo!"

Fortunately the gun and I were right in position to shoot before one of the Rocs tries to eat the poor ship's boy. Sure enough, the powder can barely push the ball out of the barrel that I've expertly aimed. If I hadn't wiled away some time shaving all the roundshot into spherical polyhedrons to reduce their drag, it might have not even been enough to hit it even so close. Hopefully it was enough to knock it off course.

The powdermonkey is just standing there in the way of the crew rushing down to help roll the cannon back into position, so I yell at him some more, "See! It's garbage! We gotta use hotshot and hope that we set them on fire when we barely scratch their bellies!"

Yeah that's right, this ship has hotshot, which you normally only get on dockside cannons that can afford to house a giant rear end furnace and don't pitch and roll so you accidentally drop a red hot ball or gently caress up loading it. That's why I'm the Master Gunner! Not that it matters when Goku Cy can just teleport around and frag anything. Maybe it'd be easier to just hand him explosives to plant on the enemies... Less chance of shooting his faster-than-a-speeding-cannonball rear end, too.

Solasoddit now Roarke is flying into the path of the Roc trying to deflect it too, but his energy weapon isn't strong enough. Guess his suit and the ship weren't too far apart in ability to perform after all. Luckily for both, I'm here to pull them out of the me. After all, if Roarke crashes and burns I might never know whatever he knows that I don't!

Luka's "hair" starts to rise and redden behind it's shiny sooty covering, and they hiss and crackle with effort, in sympathy with Hal, increasing the force of the cannon to at least be enough to give Roarke an option.

Burns Twice as Bright
When you channel the flames of fate, you may treat a missed roll as a 7-9 or a
7-9 result as a 10+. This may be a roll you or another character has made. Tell the
GM something you’ve lost; an emotion, a memory or some innate piece of your

I snap out of it after a bit, feeling a familiar awakening disorientation, "OK, so what are we doing? Chasing... Rocs?"

Luka forgets what was happening, how many Rocs there are, that the gunpowder sucks, and the plan to use heated shot. Roarke gets a 7-9 option on Volley.

I stare right back at the unfamiliar but obviously hostile Roc, over the cannonballs the powderboy shoved into my hands that I turn red hot, then over the cannons that I run back and aim before yanking their cables like a charioteer. Oh I also try to mutter something cool: "Lets make some hotwings..."

"Hah! Didn't even have a chance to atta--aw..." Everyone else shields their eyes from the flash of lightning, but I follow its quick path to our sails. I'm not that mad about them, they look cooler when their edges are rough. Then I see past them another Roc (seriously?) crash landing and on a collision course with us. After which it will explode like the last one. Crap.

Time to kill two birds with one stone: I start screaming "Go around, go around!" to command the cornerfire to quick take just the edges of all the sails, being careful not to sever them from the yardarms. The idea is if they can burn hot and fast enough they'll make an updraft of hot air that could throw the spiraling Roc away without loving up the sails much more than cosmetically. After they do their job styling the sails and pushing big bird away just before he smushes us, they can try to jump to him and have hot wings! Everybody wins. Except big bird.

Zuko Style: 2d6+2 10
When you bend a flame to your will, roll+WIS. On a 10+ it does as you command, taking the
shape and movement you desire for as long as it has fuel on which to burn. On a 7-9 the effect
is short-lived, lasting only a moment.

Yeah I was using GMF^2 on the Roc.

Luka, eyes closed and dusting off their hands, smugly turns from the Roc, "I think after that uplifting performance that I deserve a raise!" Then eyes open not to behold a cowed Captain, but Usopp charging with what looks like a black evil ball that sucks in all heat, and everyone else grabbing onto the ship for dear life as it free fall dives. The scholar will surely lose his footing and float off into the cloud of freezing gas he's about to make, so Luka screams for rope, makes a harness, then leaps after Usopp right when he releases the grenade and the ship releases him.

I start flaming the wide-load professor a little while we're spinning around behind the ship, "S-seriously, you weigh like a billion pounds! You should, uh, dump the junk in your trunk so we can get hauled back up before the rope fails or we lose our grips or something! Or wait--let me eat 'em. You'd rather not chance anyone else finding them, hm?" I dunno if I make any progress on resealing the forbidden tech, because then I see spires and vines coming for us.

"Aw, ssssshit." If we get tangled up in that we're probably dead because the ship can't really stop for us or go into a holding pattern or anything. Physics, and it'd run outta power. I end up having to bicycle kick them out of our way like I'm in the circus.

Back on the ship I sit down yoga style so my soles don't blind anyone or set the ship on fire, then put my slippers back on. "drat! Capgett, Usopp was about to give me some oldtech that would've let me get bright as Sola so we could move the ship, but Jerry whisked him away first! That guy must really want the Black Heaven to look bad! Anyway I could still do it, I'd just need some other old or foreign bauble as fuel. Got anything from the Moon War? That'd do it." In the meantime I grab a parabolic reflective disc, stick my finger through the hole in the middle, then remove the soot from the tip to make a searchlight to look for Usopp, who went missing. It's a better use of my time than staring at Gofuckyourself: I don't need to read Gett to try to get that moonstone thing from him anyway. It's obvious what motivates him.

"Cy, speed up time until this dummy gives up the goods!" I think to myself. But nah, it's no biggie, I'm gonna get that tasty, dangerous bomb soon enough. Instead I try to line us up to pull off an old dual technique. I grab my balloon helmet out of my gear, scratch my scalp to let a little fire off the top, and motion for time man to jump on my back. The way this works is he faces the other way and spins his sword real fast as a propeller while I provide the lift.

Together we form a ship powered by slashing and hot air, how awesome is that? "Onward, to rescue!"

"Callin me a liar, Comeporpoise? Now that I think about it my shell's likely to get messed up in the process, I'm gonna need a lotta ash saltpeter charcoal and oil to make repairs afterwards too. Add that to my bonus."

"Also shootin' into the net's a waste of ammo, let's just shoot the kidnapper swingin' it around! Who knows, might be a princess in there..." Turns out aiming to avoid hitting the net makes me miss, cuz the gunpowder's weak and crappy! drat, I shoulda tested it. Then yelled at people about it.

Blue jets of flame start melting through the lenses I've popped onto my "face" to approximate eyes, and my heavy metal voice starts growling, "THIS WHOLE PLANET IS MY TOY BOAT. YOU, NO MORE THAN ITS CARGO, SHOULD ADDRESS ME AS LORD--"

Fortunately, it's in Solaspon and just sounds like the roaring flame inside a furnace whose door I hold shut. The folkspeak that comes out when I let it is, "Yeah whatever, crap-tonne."

I answer to a higher power. No time for a theological discussion, though. Back down to the gun deck with me. Making some hot shot. Shooting it at the spider with the last of the non-cheap gunpowder...

Volley w/help; damage: 2d6+3 11 2d6 4

Heh. Easy. But I feel like doing more. I tell the flames being born in the spider's wound to skate down the hairs, to each of the forelegs, then to the net. Cut away all--no, three out of four of its handles so the net flies in its owners face, and painfully twists one of the arms. Like a flaming sail and the boom after an unexpected gust of wind and a lightning strike.

Oh, and eat around the Professor or Time man or the Suitor, make sure they stay safely stuck to something, or--if they're caught in the middle of the net--get to drift down gently on a flame-made silk parachute that detaches itself on landing before reigniting and disposing of itself. The spider gets out of range of the cannons, and the ship can't really move. I can still kill it with fire though. "Eat the eight legger to death," I signal the flames the spider carries with it. "But not the folk."

I stick my head out of the window the cannons just threw themselves away from and see Hal, the professor and the guy inside Hal falling. Looks like the webs are clogging the suit--all built to amplify the motions of the person inside it, not just to protect the people outside the suit (and look awesome) like mine. If he can't slow his fall they both could die. "NO!" I extend my hand to Hal and Sola hears firing invisible beams no one else can see through the Tree that converge on the pair and pull them upwards with the power of gravity so they all can decelerate enough to survive the fast approaching ground...

When I'm done doing something, I freak out looking over a black abyss, fall on my butt, then scoot back away from it. Where am I? On a ship looks like, with a bunch of hot cannons. The gun guys come over to haul me up and I let them, "Hi. I'm Luka. Where am--are we? So dark." They groan like this has happened before and draw lots to determine who has to give me ketchup, whatever that means.

I smile and nod at the Captain, then am escorted to my quarters by the gun crew, where there are signs pointing me to a thing. I follow them to a metal box labeled "book" stuck to a table. The contacts between the box and the table aren't riveted, and the seal on the box itself is not locked, both are just straight up welded. Doesn't matter, I can unstick the box and open it with my bare hands, because eh, metal. I'm excited for the treasure inside.

Apparently it's a book, and I wrote it. Dropped an ember on the special paper, fanned it til it sparked into flame then had it figureskate in tiny cursive across the surface of the page. It's got diagrams and portraits, and lots of margins full of later-notes. The ship's not moving and the guns are at rest, so I read it all.

Wow. Apparently I'm pretty smart. Got all these plans, made all these observations about the crew, what they've got that I need to keep an eye on to make sure they don't blow up the world. Yeah every single one of them can. If I can, I didn't write about it. Not my job anyway. I'm just a taster.

When I'm done I shut again in its box and get outside to be Cy the sap mutant's night light. I invented a little spotlight thing and use that. I also give the Captain back the contract. It matched the copy in my book, which I instructed myself to check, but not to tell him I'm checking or can check.

The tip off you got from the one kraa was bait because you were the second richest and greediest person he knew--the first having been the owner and captain of the first and now-ghost ship. If the harbinger had failed to entice you or another suitable mark, his undead crew would have hunted him down in the night and dragged him back into this treecave screaming while they slowly ate him alive or, worse, turned him into one of them--" They fake taking a breath for effect.

"--OR, it's some kind of huge tentacled mutant that crawled up from the depths or fell from outer space that can hypnotize creatures with their otherworldly bioluminescence and desires sunstones the biggest of which it found out can be harvested from crashed ships..."

Luka goes on to pass the time while the eggheads fix the ship. Then they perk up and reach for Gett's belt pouch.
