The indefatigable Grey Hunter is running an Only War campaign and because he is really a multitasking cephalopod in disguise, decided to throw in some Pendragon as well.

Pendragon is old school fantasy by way of King Arthur.

Excellent and hilarious audio and video actual plays of several systems brought to you by Ladderface, Golden315, Semisponge, RChimpCola, MrSunabouzu, and Sinatrapod. Generally Sinatrapod is the (forever) GM. Occasionally they let him out of his cage.

Their body of work includes: Spirit of the Century, Shadowrun, Eclipse Phase, Dark Heresy, Numenera and their own game settings 'The Silent' and 'Shadow of the Unseen'. For first time listeners I recommend Eclipse Phase and the peerless Shadow of the Unseen episodes (start with Japan first). Shadow of the Unseen is a supernatural investigator game that starts off as something like a World of Darkness game but quickly vectors into insanity and beyond. It is literally hard to describe.

kalonZombie's Pathfinder and Star Wars Campaigns

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. kalonZombie ran a Pathfinder game. And the Archive ate the thread. The End.

During the battle, kalonZombie managed to steal the audio of all the episodes and post them on a tindeck account, narrowly avoiding the Archive’s power to destroy access to hours of creative work.

http://tindeck.com/users/kalonZombieSA

Pursued by sinister analogies, the Party of Pathfinder players raced across the face of Cheliax to investigate why a volcano had erupted in the demon haunted land, uncover the inimical forces at work and restore freedom to the galaxy…in twenty episodes.

Also they played Star Wars Saga Edition and Everyone is John.

Call of Cthulhu Actual Plays all day every day. This is another group with a rotating international cast. Expect to hear a Southern twang juxtaposed with British, Australian and what I believe is Spanish accents. Scenarios range from Mythos encounters during the Great War to modern day Delta Green.

I found some of the plots a bit slow to develop, but that is my personal take.

Reckless Dice Podcast

These guys exclusively play Warhammer Fantasy Third Edition and there are several campaigns to follow. Most campaigns are published scenarios. Some episodes are general chats about Warhammer related topics.

Update: They are currently playing Call of Cthulhu, the Mountains of Madness Campaign.

Rag-NERD-Rock- Actual Plays and Gaming Topics from a New York crew

Site: http://ragnerdrok.com/episode-index/

They have extensive Call of Cthulhu and Eclipse Phase campaigns along with Mage: The Awakening, Fiasco, Wushu, Better Angels, Monsters and Other Childish Things, Dungeon World and A Dirty World games.

The New York accents and their primary Gamemaster’s radio-announcer voice add gravitas to the dick jokes. Their Call of Cthulhu episodes sound very
Scorsese.

Knights of the Night.

Found another one I really enjoy. The KotN guys have major campaign arcs of nWoD Hunter and Dresden Files under their belt. They also took a break from urban fantasy to play Numenera and Dungeon World. Currently playing D&D 5th edition.

The episodes run around an hour. The beginning few minutes are devoted to listener feedback, but you can skip directly to the action by reading the podcast info. The actual plays are very well edited. The include music for each scene and later episodes have sound effects to augment the action.

I highly recommend the beginning of the 'Delivery' arc because they go into detail about how to build a city communally with the Dresden Files RPG system.

As a matter of personal taste I am not a particular fan of the Sin Eater campaign World of Darkness arc.

The Gaming Grunts -- Call of Cthulhu, Deadlands, HeroQuest 2, Serenity and Adventure!

These guys mostly run several session deep campaigns rather than a collection of one shots. Notably they've run an updated version of Masks of Nyarlathotep, the epic globe trotting Call of Cthulhu campaign, and they do it well.

From listening to the Cool Air adventure, I gather that the DM has merged the Cthulhu Mythos with the Gods/Primordials war setting of 4th edition D&D canon. He includes the D&D version of a Sanity mechanic as well. Most episodes are combat heavy if that is your thing. There are currently 232 episodes to enjoy.

Also included are music recommendations for gaming in the ‘Dungeons & DJs’ blog section.

Gamerstable – Actual Plays and Discussion of Gaming Topics

These Actual Plays are something special.

They are less gaming podcasts and more heavily edited audiobooks with music, sound effects, and even voice actors to narrate some of the NPC monologues.

Not convinced? Here is an example:

quote:

”Tower of the Ape, Episode 6 –Horror and Madness” posted:

Narrator:

The sun reflected off the powdery white sand through the crystal clear water causing the entire pool to shimmer with an eerie cerulean luminance as a lone craft deliberately oared its way deeper into the large karstic sea cave.

It was a colossal cavern whose ceiling towered hundreds of feet above their heads gradually tapering down until it abruptly ended in the steep face of a basalt bluff.

Treacherously steep natural stone steps lined the northern wall of the cave originating from the cliff outside and ending with a shelf fifty feet above the water.

This natural walkway was barely wide enough for a man to tread and so precarious in places he would have to seek hand and foot holds to get to sections of safer width.

Massive fluted colonnades rose from the depths holding the graven entablatures with delicately intricate designs depicting strange bestial forms and shapes that were both geometric yet asymmetric.

Both breathtakingly beautiful in its grandeur and nauseatingly disturbing in its unnaturalness, this cavern to forgotten gods loomed menacingly ahead of them.

The passage of time caused the majority of the structure to submerge, sinking as if the sea and earth were consuming the tainted edifice in some terrestrial phagocytic response.

Karstic? Entablatures? Phagocytic?

When was the last time you saw vocabulary like this in print let alone heard it in an actual play podcast?
And that’s not even the action sequences.

Do any of these podcasts have groups (or individual runs of games) who focus heavily on characterization and dialogue and less on procedural action, take the games they're playing at least somewhat seriously, and don't play some variant of D&D? Heck, I'll even take two out of three. A tall order I know, but I'm spoiled by the Jank Cast, Roll20 Presents Apocalypse World and, to a lesser extent, RollPlay's Swan Song and Mirrorshades, who all play in that vein.

They need to be brief and to the point. The current one is too verbose.

'Mature audiences advised. References to [minor] abuse."

You may not even need the second sentence.

Those are my thoughts from the perspective of having yet to listen to the episode and just reading the comments.

Edit: not preechy. As much as I like you guys the "additional FINE products" did make me roll my eyes more than a little and I have no shame shilling your products like a fanatic. :D Def remove "in addition to supernatural horror" because anyone who knows cthulhu knows what they are getting into.

Or Mature Audences Advised. References to darker actions of human nature. Instead of the words "trigger warning."

For those of you listeners out there - what draws you to an AP podcast? Is the genre or system first or something else? What keeps you listening?

It's been a while so my memory isn't exact. I believe I was looking for Call of Cthulhu modern podcasts, specifically Delta Green when I stumbled across RPPR. Other than the podcasts on Unspeakable Oath (some of which are you guys as well, of course) I think RPPR has cornered the market on Delta Green podcasts.

Previous to RPPR I had tried a smattering of Skype of Cthulhu podcasts.

From there I tried some of the D&D 4e podcasts, got confused and finished the beginning 10 before I got bored of fantasy and was looking for more scifi. Then I discovered that you were running Eclipse Phase, which I had never played. I listened to the Eclipse Phase and Call of Cthulhu podcasts alternately (chronologically). I think I was already a regular listener at that point before I got to Know Evil.

So for me, genre is king for the initial grab. I had a bias against Superhero games (and comics) in general before I listened to your Heroes of New Arcadia series. You guys sold me on them.

I really don't care about the system (except I don't like Fiasco games for some reason) I am more into the creativity and camaraderie of the talent on the podcast. That's what keeps me listening.

clockworkjoe posted:

Also, campaigns: there are fewer comments in general on campaign episodes than one shots, especially later ones, which makes sense. Not everyone is going to listen to the entire campaign. It seems a lot of listeners pick campaigns for systems/settings they want to learn about - Eclipse Phase, for example, or 4E D&D (back right when it came out). Do you listen to one episode or two before you decide to follow a campaign? What causes you to drop it off, other than real life/got too busy/lost track of it and don't want to re-listen?

Despite being verbose on the comment page of your actual plays, I try not to comment unless I have something interesting to say. For long running campaigns I've made most of the comments I can think of at the beginning so I generally have less comments towards the end.

I guess I usually listen to two episodes before I decide to follow a campaign. Other than the 4ed New World podcast, I think I've listened to all of the RPPR campaigns fully. The things that will make me drop a campaign are: a guy doing a female falsetto (poorly), voice/audio quality issues, lack of a narrative resolution/bad story, players audibly not being engaged with the story (talking/doing something else. This is really more in the audio category for me), GM's completely full of themselves they drag hours on detail and don't get to the plot (RPPR has never done this).

For example Ross, I know you have Tom have talked about the Night's Black Agents campaign. Tom mentioned his master sniper/forger/18 year old was a character he just couldn't get into and consequently he didn't feel that engaged. Even though I could hear Tom's lack of enthusiasm vs playing a octopus, this didn't bother me in the slightest because the RPPR team has great chemistry. I loved the narrative story of Night's Black Agents and all the characters even though I really don't like the Preparedness mechanic or the GUMSHOE system at all.

Similarly No Soul Left Behind is awesome to listen to but I would never run the system.

Regarding men doing female character voices, I recently listened to Rollplay's Swansong Episode 10 where two dudes were impersonating (or trying to) Southern ladies. It was goddamn hilarious. Some people just impersonate a voice badly and it drives me up a wall to the point I skip their dialogue and eventually skip episodes with that player.

I'm not into fantasy with D&D's fight mechanics that are long and boring to listen to right now, so I haven't picked up The New World again.

I heard of a collaborative storygame about cultists working together (ish) in a small town to raise a Great Old One. The game is called Soth. Naturally I had to track down an actual play of the thing.

Also Naturally Soth is for VERY Mature Audiences only.

quote:

Soth: a game of cultists vs investigators

by Steve Hickey Games

In Soth, you play cultists in a small-town, trying to summon a dark god. If you complete three more rituals, Soth will rise. But can you conceal your murderous crimes from family and friends?

Soth is a mix between Breaking Bad and the stories of H.P. Lovecraft.

It’s a noir thriller that uses a diceless system to evaluate how suspicious the cultists are being. You then spend 'Suspicion' to put the cultists under pressure.

Duration: 1-3 sessions
Players: 3-7
Ages: 16+
System: diceless, low-prep, low-complexity

What is Soth youtube trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hhk_Ipt0sE

Preview of Soth : https://pe56d.s3.amazonaws.com/p19ngfkr841tpc1t3vto91iplp737.pdf

Soth website: https://payhip.com/b/Ux9O

The Jank Cast posted a three session Soth adventure. http://jankcast.com/archives/3214

The players were excellent and mature and the game seems to have this biphasic structure, where the beginning half is sort of slow and then things ramp up and go totally off the rails in the third act. The mechanics reinforce this, with the players generating enough heat that in the third act the GM can buy multiple investigators. Also some cultists have hidden agendas which get played or foiled when investigators start crashing down, the ritual sacrifices get more demanding and people throughout the town are getting very suspicious.

Despite all the casual murder, grooming of a target for human sacrifice, and backstabbing; funny enough the most horrifying event was the slow awkward dissolution of a marriage. Brilliantly roleplayed but very very dark.

RPPR started a new branch of podcasts called Tabletop Tales. Currently there are three episodes up of a Dresden Files campaign.

Tom plays a lizardman something, Aaron plays a half-ghost with the most, and Ross plays a teenage Slenderman who is being stalked by the cast of Marble Hornets. Oh and there is a Warden in there someplace.

http://tabletoptales.roleplayingpublicradio.com/

While browsing for more Delta Green stuff I was recommended the youtube channel of the NatOne actual play group.

I was impressed. These guys are professional and quite good.

I've only had the opportunity to watch The Last Stage. The Last Stage is tagged with Delta Green, but in the intro episode the GM makes it very clear the arc of the story is about government funded supernatural investigations broadly and the world is not canonically Delta Green. They are however using the latest Delta Green rules. Frankly this is great because it keeps the players on their toes. Who knows what the GM will throw at them? The episodes are edited somewhat to intersperse after action interviews with agents with the story line. Also the GM deftly handles six players. In general I would say this is two too many players for a good atmospheric horror game, but they execute it well.

Story Arc broad stroke spoilers for The Last Stage.
The later adventures have the Wraith:The Oblivion tag so it looks like the world taking a lot of material from ghosts in classic WoD!

They have also published actual plays with Dread, Fiasco, Delta Green (real Cthulhu version), D&D 5th and FATE.

In addition I get to introduce my new favorite podcast, the Technical Difficulties Gaming Podcast

Note there is a "Technical Difficulties" podcast that is not related to gaming. You are going to get inadvertent tech advice :haw:

http://www.technicaldifficultiespod.com/

http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/technical-difficulties-gaming/id1101584393

The players are Ethan C, Aaron, Laura B, and Greg. I believe this group coalesced around the RPPR forums.

They use Google Hangouts which is on average better than Skype with the occasional titular Technical Difficulties.

Technical Difficulties has completed a Red Markets campaign using the beta rules. They are posting the episodes weekly. Currently there are 11 uploaded. If you want to jump straight into the action with how the Takers defend their Mississippi Enclave by attempting to raid a coal mine for precious precious energy, begin with Episode 2

http://www.technicaldifficultiespod.com/episodes/2016/4/6/ep-2-red-markets-the-reformers-session-2

Episode 00 is primarily interesting commentary and critiques on Red Markets’ beta game mechanics, with detailed comparisons to other systems. Enclave and character creation, starts in Episode 01.

In addition, the Technical Difficulties Gaming Podcast plays Eclipse Phase and Call of Cthulhu. The Call of Cthulhu game, He Calls Me By the Thunder, is an original adventure set in the Civil War and being playtested for publication. All is not what it seems in this mystery.

I know I'm very late to the party, but One Shot podcast is very good.

Some criticisms, then some raving. Or perhaps the reverse.

http://oneshotpodcast.com/

The One Shot podcast features players with a strong background in improv and the comedy arts playing a system for 4-5 hours.

I find some of the podcasts to be hit or miss. To be frank this has nothing to do with the quality of the podcasts (consistently high) or the games. Simply when I want to listen to an actual play podcast, I prefer listening to a detailed story, rather than improv of a game with little to no preparation. I'm not a fan of pure improv in general, since without a plot or at least skeleton of a plot, an improv troupe can fall into one of several repetitive "yes-and" patterns which eat up time; and neither advance character development nor add anything to the story arc.

For example, a couple yelling at each other over a trivial matter or a rendition of "Who's on First", no matter how well done does not advance the plot of a story. It just takes time away from the audience.

Some of One Shot's podcasts fall into this improv cycle. Or sometimes a player decides to chew the scenery with an irrelevant NPC just to mess with the GM (Rogue Trader episode).

However the following episodes do not fall into those traps and are simply amazing. Audio gold.

The Dracula Dossier is GMed by none other than the creator Kenneth Hite! Listen to gut-wrenching sacrifices made in the name of humanity and revenge! Watch Dracula get confused!

Also features Goon turned productive member of society GENERAL IRONICUS!

http://oneshotpodcast.com/podcasts/one-shot/66-dracula-dossier-part-1/

http://oneshotpodcast.com/podcasts/one-shot/155-dracula-dossier-2-part-1/

Also tis the season since The Dracula Dossier swept the Ennies

The Legend of the Five Rings is ...just fantastic. This episode could be a screen play.

http://oneshotpodcast.com/podcasts/one-shot/92-legend-of-five-rings-rings-part-1/

Numenera I could not stop laughing. This is what happens when you mix a fantastic GM, Rocky Balboa, Old-Man-Bag-of-Drugs, Christopher Walken (I think?) and Sexual Tension Lady.

http://oneshotpodcast.com/podcasts/one-shot/109-numenera-part-1/

Red Markets No idea how the RPPR crew kept a straight face through this episode. Never forget the Bass Pro.

http://oneshotpodcast.com/podcasts/one-shot/150-red-markets-part-1/

Again, every podcast is high quality. Improv is just not my cup of tea. Despite my bias, the performances break through and are very good.

Roleplaying Public Radio just released another gem.

The RPPR crew had the opportunity to play Adam Scott Glancy's newest historical Call of Cthulhu game, The Wounded, this Gencon.

quote:

Synopsis. The horrors of the First World War did not end at the battlefield for many. Crippling injuries affected countless soldiers and civilians on both sides. In one British countryside hospital, a group of wounded soldiers begin the long journey of coming to terms with their wounds when a doctor offers them a chance at a normal life. The experimental surgery can restore missing limbs and burned skin and safely extract embedded shrapnel. It seems like a panacea for all forms of injury, but how can it possibly work? As the patients consider their options, their dreams grow strange. Their war has ended, but another one beckons…

I expected a grim and gloomy gaslamp game about surviving the horrors of the Great War. I expected a team of Richard Harrows from Boardwalk Empire fighting the Mythos with less than functional bodies.

I did not expect that a single die roll would pivot the whole adventure into the comedy stratosphere. Most amazing is that the adventure did not go off the rails.

Complex Action has a bunch of prep episodes for an AP that's due to start later this month. Not sure how good it will be but the GM has put a lot of thought into background story. (Not necessary if you're going to run a game, but might be interesting if your players cooperate.)

So glad you liked it. I totally forgot about the Metallica references. There are just so many little things about that series that are hilarious. I was also really impressed by the DM. She was very creative and quick at managing the player chaos.

When Old Man Bag of Drugs gets thrown up into the air and is falling into the pool, then the DM makes him wait, and the player moves back and forth from the microphone to simulate being further and closer to the ground; is another fantastic bit.

By the way, is that one player doing a Christopher Walken impression?

Speaking of One Shot

One Shot Podcast produced a three part series in the world of Exalted (White Wolf/Onyx Path), a setting that combines high fantasy anime and the heroics found in the Final Fantasy games. The world of Creation has taking it's first stumbling steps into childhood, and it is up to mortal champions of the Divine to fix the lands where petty godlings, spirits and elemental dragons still trod the Earth.

http://oneshotpodcast.com/podcasts/one-shot/176-exalted/

The game master and story woven by the players was very good. It is a great introduction to the game world for those with zero background.

------

The gamemaster for the One Shot Exalted (3rd edition) podcast was Quinn Wilson.

He runs his own Exalted podcast series called Swallows of the South

http://swallowsofthesouth.com/

I have to be a bit critical here. Though Quinn Wilson is a just fantastic DM (listen to how he weaves little nuggets of fantasy into his location descriptions), one of the main characters in the early podcasts chose to play a character who was constantly awkward. I understand this was done for the sake of humor, but it was done constantly almost to the point of lampooning slapstick, and that style of roleplaying was not to my taste.

I highly recommend you give it a chance though.

-----

The next discovery is fantastic for you fans of supernatural horror and dark mysteries.

The Orpheus Protocol is a game-in-development revolving around investigation of supernatural mysteries and cults, and surviving the horror uncovered therein, by Varcolac Press.

The Orpheus Protocol is NOT the old White Wolf game named "Orpheus" where players are mortals who project into the ghost world. Themes do dovetail between the two products however, as they do in all occult mystery stories.

http://www.orpheusprotocol.com/

The inaugural story was fantastic. Follow three intrepid researchers into the maw of a potentially doomsday cult in the party-hey-day of the carefree 1970s. What follows is gripping inner turmoil, smart play and an environment that would put Dead Space to shame. The GM is a master with words and descriptions.

Fear the Dark.

They all genuinely are having a blast and are a team of 'a literal boy scout paladin', 'a hillbilly crick elf mushroom druid and her possum friend', and 'a human raised by dwarfs who is a hilariously overconfident rear end in a top hat'. It's also a pretty cool concept in general as a D&D campaign set after another band of heroes did THEIR epic quest and things kinda turned to poo poo anyway despite them doing things 'the right way'.
