who the gently caress decided it was clever to add "total" on their pie chart. Also Tyler Vigen's spurious correlation is the best website.

These ones make me so mad because it's so clear they chose those lovely representation so that it suits their bias. It's one thing to be inept at graphs, it's another to be malicious.

Dickensian Aspect posted:You see this kind of thing all the time; there's almost certainly another panel next to it using the same scale that does have some action. It could actually be more misleading, in that context, to use a more zoomed in Y axis for this panel. Yeah that's what I meant with "being part of a bigger figure". Presented like this on its own it's pretty drat bad.

But... Doesn't that legend imply that one axis is distance route sun in kirkwood gaps and the other axis is jovian resonance? This is not at all what the graph is. I don't even know what the y is on there. He might have wanted to show how resonance decreases as distance increases but ooh boy did he fail if that's what he wanted to do.

Oh so it's that kind of site? I guess they blew up the scale to try and prove the point that temperatures did not change drastically in that case? Which would be more on the dishonest than the disingenuous side then.

Judge Schnoopy posted:From one of the twitter comments: Tell that to the poor Mars Probe that fell victim to the evil of clinging to an old unit system. quote:However, on September 23, 1999, communication with the spacecraft was lost as the spacecraft went into orbital insertion, due to ground-based computer software which produced output in non-SIunits of pound-seconds (lbf s) instead of the metric units of newton-seconds (N s) specified in the contract between NASA and Lockheed. The spacecraft encountered Mars on a trajectory that brought it too close to the planet, causing it to pass through the upper atmosphere and disintegrate. I just never understood why people are so adamant about keeping feet and inches with all their weird idiosyncrasies instead of transitioning to metres like almost all of the rest of the world. Hell even England is transitioning.

Hell, even then truncation is not exactly what's happening here, it's a scaling issue. Yes, you're pretty much restating the point I was trying to make. Also... Godammit not another one of those. I dunno I didn't do probability math in ages and something feels off about my answer E: I guess another way of seeing it would be that the probability of getting it right is the sum of the probability of it being the right answer times the probability of picking this answer. If we assume that all 3 possible answers are equiprobable, we end up with P=.33x.5+.33x.25+.33x25=.33x(.5+.25+.25)=.33x1 so 33% E2: I just realised my assumption that the answers are equiprobable is actually dumb and wrong in this context, nvm.
