How to clean these normal thickness carpets witout resorting to a proper rug shampoo

Anyway enzyme spray cleaner should help it's often sold as "pet smell cleaner" just spray it all over the smelly spots then wipe with rag then run a fan over it to dry

I've been using this, but it's getting bad and I've been too patient with him. Shampooing the carpet will set me back, bit I'm worried about the coming winter. I don't like piss very much.

there are actually many 'no piss zones' which dogs respect, but these are arbitrary and seem to change over time. we haven't devised a method of predicting where they may be at any given time.
under the bed is his no-piss zone
piss zones on the other hand are the corner of my favorite recliner and the foot of the bed. Male dogs seem to prefer pissing on or at something instead of just anywhere
you would think that fact would help me solve this problem but alas
