It's okay if you have any questions.

"radical" as in "extreme". Not all people with terfy views are feminists, but there is a school of thought within feminism that espouses views like that, and the name stuck.

It's a pedigree thing.

quote:

Radical feminists view society as fundamentally a patriarchy in which men dominate and oppress women. Radical feminists seek to abolish the patriarchy as one front in a struggle to "liberate everyone from an unjust society by challenging existing social norms and institutions."

Men bad. Every interaction must be viewed through the lens of the patriarchy (men) trying to dominate women. Go a few steps down the rabbit hole and transgender women are merely men pretending to be women so they can . . . dominate female spaces? Dressing as girls to reinforce the patriarchy?

Of course in the 1970s things were a little different, and the authors of the movement might have had no problem at all with transgender folk, except in that it should be unnecessary to declare a gender at all and we should all be gender fluid instead. Giving birth is the only inherently gendered activity.

quote:

According to Shulamith Firestone in The Dialectic of Sex: The Case for Feminist Revolution (1970): "[T]he end goal of feminist revolution must be, unlike that of the first feminist movement, not just the elimination of male privilege but of the sex distinction itself: genital differences between human beings would no longer matter culturally."[4] While radical feminists believe that differences in genitalia and secondary sex characteristics should not matter culturally or politically, they also maintain that women's special role in reproduction should be recognized and accommodated without penalty in the workplace, and some have argued compensation should be offered for this socially essential work.[5]

At some point they seem to have latched onto protecting women from men's evil schemes at all costs, and completely forgotten the ultimate goal of eliminating the concept of gender entirely.

Patriarchy =/= men though. In fact, the whole notion that patriarchy = men is frequently used by anti-feminists.

Second-wave feminism did absolutely contain some utter nutcases though, they were basically "what if Tumblr but 1970s". Actual TERFs still exist but they are a shrinking minority, from what I can see the main rift in modern-day feminist activism is centered on intersectionality and the hijacking of feminist language by multinationals and empowered white women for personal gain.

Yeah, obviously. The patriarchy is not something men do to women. Boys and men are harmed by the patriarchy. Women have had a huge role in reinforcing the patriarchy. It's a bunch of bad things that society does to society.

Radical feminism is pretty much directly opposed to modern feminist thought, particularly the trans-erasing (or sex worker-erasing) kind. If the sticking point is that the term includes the term 'feminism' in spite of not representing that movement and outright attacks marginalized women, it's really more of a question of language. Nobody who calls someone a TERF recognizes them as a feminist.

You could make the case that 'feminism' etymologically represents a belief that women should be in charge of society, and the movement we have should be branded as 'egalitarianism,' but I have never met anyone who unironically made either of these points and was also worth listening to.

Feminism, the word, was hijacked and destroyed.

I'm old enough to remember when Ms magazine came out, I had a very enlightened grandmother. The basic idea of women being female people and men being male people, different but equal, needs a name. It used to be feminism, it wasn't a bad word.

The majority of women also enforce patriarchal societal norms because it's all they know from birth. Most don't have enough power/wealth to do any differently if they wanted to. Those of us that can should. This is the major issue that I care about most and I don't even know what words to use anymore!

That warm and fuzzy feeling.
There was a lot of focus on tumblr and etc overusing academic terms describing specific social and cultural shortfalls until they were generic snarl words meaning "something I do not like". I wonder what proportion of it was just dumb people doing it unaware and how much was intentional sabotage egging the former on.

Desperate clout-chasers looking for new weapons and not caring about the consequences is also a big part of it.

It's telling how many people stopped using 'intersectionality' once it was made clear that had to include economic class too. In general that whole paradigm collapsed for the most part after 2016.

I'm just basing this off my time on twitter, but I think feminism is when white women with rainbow emojis in their handle tell black men with rainbow emojis in their handle that they're racist and sexist for not idolizing woke bae Ronald Reagan.

I mean I must have been way off before hand because that wasn't even remotely my understanding of it.
