Do Not Give GW Money.

Also, $150 buys you a wide selection of X-wings, an MSRP Waramahordes full army box, an entire Infinity army, a very nice bottle of something, or a meal at a fancy restaurant for you and your significant other or your grandma or whoever. All of those are much better purchases than a couple of models for a bad game.

If you drop £150 on the Dropfleet Commander kickstarter you can get:

* Two player start set with UCM and Scourge starter fleets, rulebook, terrain, dice, etc
* Two other starter fleets of your choice (Go for PHR and Shaltari)
* All of the free cruiser/frigate unlocks so far
* Tons of other random stretch goal stuff

You could get the boxed game and starter fleets for all of the factions..

...or you could get one and a half poo poo board games full of space marines from GW.

You could get 1850 points of Germans for £60. So that'd be two and a half armies. Big ones (pointswise, I mean it's germany they get gently caress all in terms of numbers).

Seemed quick while it was going on next to FoW. It's a relatively rules-light platoon game, so I can't imagine it's a slog.

Well, I'm pledged at the 3 battle group level for Warpath, I have an eBay firesaled Warriors of Chaos army I play 7e with my friends with and my painting project is currently a pair of 6mm western theater ACW armies-- there's tons of "the hobby" available to me, the problem is that HH is a particular romantic itch for my childhood, when I spent hours f5ing forge world and looking at models I couldn't afford. I'm hearing that GW stores all across Australia are posting on their Facebooks that GW is creating a new "Specialist" games studio to continue development of LotR and bring back BFG, Bloodbowl, Necromunda, and Epic :psyduck:

This can't be true because this is a Really Good Idea and Games Workshop is only capable of Really Bad Ideas.

If it IS true, then surely it won't be executed competently.

Also if it weren't more obvious that Age of Sigmar is a flop and GW is in full-panic mode, well.....

EDIT: I just checked a couple of random Aussie GW facebooks and I see nothing of the sort.

EDIT EDIT: https://www.facebook.com/GWBelconnen/timeline

GW in Geelong(?) says something similar.

It'd be hilarious (and probably wise) for GW to just admit they can't come up with new, interesting IP and just continue to cash in on the poo poo they've made over the last 30 years. They could feasibly expect to make sales on all the old models they've made in that time if they actually write solid rulesets for them.

Speaking of old models, I think I've still got a box of all-pewter 3rd Edition SM Terminators I should probably look to unload on someone like SRM who enjoys retro-Hammer models.

FrostyPox

To be quite fair, I really enjoyed Battlefleet Gothic and Necromunda, and I heard good things about at least one or two editions of Epic.

TBQH if they seriously commit to offering a diverse variety of games, I might, might be tempted to.... to.... :ohdear: give GW money :ohdear:

I mean, in the interest of fairness I've always maintained that if GW ever did something smart, I would reward them for it by buying their poo poo.

It's just that they haven't made a smart decision in at least 5 years, probably more.

Oh yeah, I enjoyed BFG quite a bit but it kinda fell apart if you weren't playing Imperials Vs. Chaos. Forums goon selnaric and I did a BFG campaign that involved Orks vs. Eldar and it was a mess. Thank goodness Ilor and his Necrons never got involved in that.

I think (hope?) the ship has sailed far enough from port with people having tried offerings like Frostgrave, Infinity, etc. to scratch those itches, that in order to get back all those lapsed customers GW would have to compete on rules and price as well as nostalgia and setting.

Yeah, it'd be great if they not just brought them back but made sure the rules were solid offerings.

Though I'd still probably play an unchanged BFG for the sake of nostalgia.

Ilor

That's a crit.
I've played a bunch of the different Specialist Games over the years and BFG was by far my favorite. It had a couple of issues, but in terms of game-play it was really solid.

It does feel a bit too-little too-late, honestly. There are a lot of more mechanically satisfying/elegant games out there, with good model ranges. This year alone has seen what seems like an explosion of quality, smaller scale games across most of GW's specialist offerings. BFG was fun, but I'm not sure I'd want to give money to GW when I could play Armada. Or invest in the new Dropfleet Commander game. Mordheim was a classic, but the more streamlined Frostgrave scratches that itch pretty well, and there are no shortage of other similar systems. Malifaux released their own campaign rules this year as well. Osprey is going to be releasing what appears to be a Necromunda clone which hopefully will be up to the same level as Frostgrave.

Specialist games were fun, but I can't help feeling their time has passed. Their death inspired a lot of other designers who have come out with some great games that are, in my opinion, much better. Just dusting off the old games and jacking up the price doesn't feel like a positive development.

I have heard that the Frostgrave campaign rules leave something to be desired and the wandering monsters are something of a barrier to entry. Mordheim was great because the scenery was actually pretty good for card buildings and the rules were pretty OK.

Epic Armageddon is a legitimately good game. It's challenging, engaging, has a lot of depth, and (especially when you use the community-made army lists) genuinely fair and balanced. There are some rules quirks and problem areas here and there, the rules themselves need to be organized better, etc. but it's no worse than most normal and good tabletop wargames made by good companies that aren't GW.

If GW brought back Epic but kept the rules as they stand now, or (somehow) found ways to improve them without making the game a stupid non-game for idiots and babies, that would be amazing. The warhammer 40k battlefield really is far better simulated at 6mm.

I don't believe it, though. It'd take a really massive investment and it'd be really risky and GW just got severely burnt by taking a massive and expensive investment in AoS. I expect the company to either burn the place down by AoS-ing 40k, or, to get really conservative for a while and not make any big changes.

An ad that straight up says "dreams and rainbows" can't be real. But what I would give for a copy of Blood Bowl and Epic.

FrostyPox
Feb 8, 2012

Yeah, I have a hard time believing it. I mean, a smart company would try to diversify their offerings a bit more than GW does, I'd think, especially if they want to remain the dominant player in all areas of tabletop wargaming instead of ceding sections of the market like they have (6mm/10mm mass battle games, space ship games, etc).

But Games Workshop is not a smart company and, like PyroDwarf mentioned, the powers that be did sound like they couldn't wait to get rid of The Hobbit.

In any event, I have to wonder why the GW store that posted that would do so if it wasn't official word from up high if he expects to keep his job. Then again, even if it is official, posting it would probably cost him his job, too, considering GW's secrecy policy.

Though the games mentioned are the ones where there's a direct competing product on the market that they stand a good chance of crushing. Notice also that Mordheim is not mentioned as that would hint at the Old World and Warhammer Fantasy. It could be a prank or it could be real. I'm torn either way.
