Motronic posted:What the gently caress? I'm working under the table at this point. There's this thing we do called "build infrastructure" and "provide income support to those in need" and "free healthcare to those who can't afford insurance, significantly discounted even to those that can" and so on and so forth. These things cost money, you know. The tax free threshold is $18,200. It takes quite a while to hit the maximum marginal rate. More info. Slavvy posted:Feel the socialism. Let it grow within you. I'm perfectly fine with a 50% marginal tax rate, the alternative is getting health care through a $400/month insurance plan with a $5,000 deductible.

gently caress, the US used to have like an 80% top marginal rate, and those were some of the best times economically we've ever seen.

Hell, SOCIALIST CANADA has tax rates that cap out lower than the US rates, and actually seem pretty comparable (if not lower) if wiki is to be believed. As for tax problems, I've always done taxes using some of the government recommended free software. It's really nice and simple, at least for all my needs and takes all of like an hour for both of us. We still have our own mess of problems, but I feel much better living in the north after reading through these chat threads.

Some states even offer free tax clinics and tax advice/double-checking of forms. My workplace offers free tax preparation and filing for all the people who don't need complicated returns (i.e. don't own homes or investments, etc). They have H&R Block (I think) do it, and they actually have them come into the office and schedule for the people to do it while they are on the clock. I think it's intended mostly to help out all the hourly people on the help desk, janitorial & maintenance staff, etc. I think it's a pretty nice thing to do.

To be fair though, unless you were an idiot and didn't hire an accountant with knowledge of tax loopholes nobody paid the top marginal rate in the 50s. There were so many loopholes that when JFK dropped the top rate to ~60% and also closed most of them it was largely considered a tax hike on the wealthy.

I get it, I live in a state with mostly one season too, but... 50s is cold? If I could knock my bedroom down to 55 or so whenever I slept, I would be incredibly happy. My last apartment was small enough that I could keep the thermostat at 68 in the summer and only get raped a little bit (electric bill was about $150/mo in the summer - gotta love small apartments on a middle floor - winter electric bills were $30ish with the heat set at 65, and I'm pretty sure the majority of that was split between my water heater and clothes dryer). Okay, fine, two seasons. There's "oh poo poo, tornados" and "gently caress this heat". edit: I don't like wrenching on poo poo when it's below about 45 though, poo poo HURTS when a wrench decides to say "wait you wanted me to actually grip that bolt?", causing you to slam your hand into multiple sharp things. randomidiot fucked around with this message at 06:41 on Jan 30, 2016 |

They don't understand that the plan was to make government work poorly by cutting budgets so people would hate government. The DMV sucks because it is hilariously understaffed. Properly staffed, they'd tend to have 2 to 3 times as many employees, but they can't because they aren't funded for it. The DMV is a prime target for cuts because it is the only real interaction normal people have with the state on a semi-regular basis.

Mine seemed to be on the weak side as well, though the system was drat near empty when I finally got gauges last year - so it wouldn't surprise me that it may be low again. It holds a hilariously small amount of refrigerant - a little under a pound - so any loss is immediately noticeable.NitroSpazzz posted:Woke up at 4:30 today because the house smelled like an electrical fire. I used to hate painting and decorating, then I discovered the combo of taping everything followed by chucking the rollers and brushes after a project instead of spending forever cleaning them. Consumables cost of painting 1 room: 2" brush £1, 4" roller 50p, 9" roller £1. Quarter roll of tape. Honestly I save hours over my previous way of doing things. Anyway, daughter's room painted pink couple of weeks ago, sons room being painted some shade of yellow now. Yes within reason we let them choose their own colours.

Cakefool posted:I used to hate painting and decorating, then I discovered the combo of taping everything followed by chucking the rollers and brushes after a project instead of spending forever cleaning them. I just went the other way. We painted the master bedroom last year with rollers and, no matter how I applied, I can still see roller marks if I look at the right angle. Since that will not do, I bought a Titan paint sprayer. Prep and clean up will be the biggest time consumers, by far. I think this thing would blast a wall in a couple minutes. Got it off of eBay from a pawn shop... they sent it to me absolutely full of paint. Good thing is that it's almost new, none of the paint had dried, so a filter change and a SERIOUS cleaning and it's ready to go.

Owed 30k in student loans. The other 5k bought appliances for the new house when we moved East. Huzzah. And only about 20 years left on our mortgage, hooray for accelerated bi-weekly payments chewing through the interest faster and actually getting some principle paid off. Not like we'll be here that long (lords I hope not), but I'll cope.
