Yeah, I was expecting him to bring her some severed heads when I saw him eavesdropping on her, but what he brought her instead worked out fairly well.

And on that point, isn't it odd (or maybe it's not?) that Galavant, a silly musical that frequently breaks the fourth wall, is one of the few shows on prime time that offers such rounded characters? I mean, Madalena is clearly the ~~bad guy~~ antagonist, and at times she's cartoonishly evil. But, she does have feelings. Or at least, she does now. For a moment, she's someone the viewer can sympathize with, even though she's just so evil. Most shows would make us, or try to make us, love the fact that she was getting roasted by her old tormentors, because that'll show her! But in this show, they went a different way, and even the backstabbing Gareth shows some depth.

I know this isn't the first show to contain characters who aren't wholly defined by their role in the series--i.e., bad guys are completely evil and irredeemable, good guys are flawless and pure, etc. But too many shows are just written too lazily.

Well, Gareth and Richard have been getting more sympathetic for a while. Gareth may be a brutal thug who doesn't understand/believe in the concepts of 'guilt' or 'regret', but he's loyal, and honestly cares about Richard. He even seemed interested in 'properly' solving the issue of the chicken and egg dilemma the peasants brought up, before Madalena decided to eat it. And Richard is...well, Richard.

The thing is that Madalena hasn't had a sympathetic/humanizing moment since her story about her pet goat back in season 1, so it's a bit of an 'oh right, she has depth beyond just being a huge bitch' moment.

I didn't realize this show was back until recently, and it's been such a treat to catch up. The box was the absolute best, and I hope Gareth and Magdalena get a long life together looting and pillaging the countryside in the name of true love. :allears:

That was pretty great. I think it may have actually topped 'No One But You' as my new favorite Galavant number. Galavant's facial expressions in it are so perfect.

Also I just checked and it's up on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kxIbo2aEOQ. Sadly however they cut the urgent crow from the intro.
