Time to try another Ironman run I guess... maybe third fourth fifth sixth seventh eighth time's the charm?

It's a specialist issue. Apparently the gremlin doesn't get phantom? It works fine on my grenadier. You could try aid protocoling someone on your team before moving if you ever get that again.

I use Moddable DLC Weapons and I'm currently using a spark on legendary ironman without it feeling underpowered. Just the ability to slap a decent scope on its gun has made it a lot more useful.

You may want to resist the urge to slap weapon mods on the hunter weapons, though. A boltcaster is a tad strong with more than one shot.

One of the best parts about phantom is its interaction with sharpshooters. After your first engagement, you can use your phantom ranger to find the next group of enemies, park your entire team just out of sight of them, and put them all on overwatch. If that pod moves, even away, a sharpshooter with long watch will take a shot and activate the pod on the enemy turn, after which they will run directly into your firing line. You can also use phantom rangers to scout out the objectives on destroy the device and the base defense mission and squad sight them from a safe distance, or to destroy turrets if you have AP rounds or are on a supply mission and don't care about time.

Phantom rangers are also great in the middle of a fight to check ahead and make sure moving someone else up won't activate another pod. I don't even upgrade swords anymore, I throw that money at sparks. My rangers stay concealed until the last pod of the mission, or until leaving them concealed will get someone shot.

Of course, I'm playing on legendary ironman. My friend sticks to the lower difficulties and absolutely hates phantom rangers, because that level of care isn't required. He'd rather plop a bladestorm ranger on a reinforcement flare and watch advent get sliced up the second they land. I think any discussion of how useful an ability is hinges on the difficulty setting and the availability of save scumming.

I like sharpshooter officers that can throw out multiple holo targets and a focus fire. I haven't gotten very far, but that extra aim helps me actually hit things in the early days. Relying on 60s and 70s sucks.

My sharpshooter may as well be a pacifist for as often as he fires his rifle.

I thought Shinobi was the worst thing about Long War 2 but now that I've modded that away, I've come to realize it's actually the dumb L rail on the SMGs. It's such a cool gun model ruined by a thing that makes zero sense.

So does anyone know what research is needed to unlock Sparks in Long War 2? In the base game if you disabled the DLC mission, you could just build one when you got a proving ground, but that doesn't seem to be the case modded.

I grew to love Sparks in my modded vanilla campaign, where they drove mad any advent who dared gaze upon them.

If you play a lot of ironman you generally don't want to play the exact same scripted DLC story mission over and over. The integrated option just gives you the cool new stuff from the expansions without having to dick around with the story aspects.

Grenadiers get the Frost Bomb, and can make it into two very big frost bombs, and that's probably the most powerful item in the game. Did you know you can frost bomb your own people to remove every status effect? Did you know being frozen remove's an enemy's innate defenses (it's essentially +40 aim against a gatekeeper), ability to dodge, and cancels all status effects including ongoing psi abilities? Did you know every time you use a frost bomb Bradford gets laid? I would play this game with nothing but grenadiers armed with three frost bombs each if it was possible, and the chosen would be like, oh poo poo, there goes the galaxy.

I've never tried frost bombing an unconscious friend to wake them up does anyone know if that works?

If it's the psionic antenna thing, there's little enviromental things you can shoot for more turns.

If it's the lost mission where the VIP is running out of ammo, they're timed so you can barely get there, because you're expected to grab the VIP and then sprint home chased by a thousand lost. Make sure you bring accurate dudes so you can kill any lost on the way without losing moves.

So I just had one of the new retaliation missions, and the assassin showed up at the very start. The only possible way for me to succeed would have been to ignore the assassin entirely. I don't know, has anyone successfully done one of these missions with a chosen activating early? I lost half my team and saved no one.

The chosen stop timers and that's cool but they don't do poo poo to stop civlians dying. It's weird how they'd recognize one situation as unfair and the same situation with a different kind of timer as no big deal.

Okay, one thing's been bugging me.

One of the Resistance-given "rescue our operative VIP" missions, that doesn't involve the Lost. Generally just rewards the VIP and some intel, you find the guy then it turns out to be an ambush so you need to survive X turns.

At the start of that type of mission, Bradford mentions that the resistance has an operative in the area to assist with the rescue. That suggests an extra soldier somewhere. There isn't, or if there is, he's well-hidden, and not indicated on the map or the rewards list pre-mission. Is that line just a red herring that should be ignored? Is Bradford lying to me?

I always assumed the operative was captured by Advent, and that's how they know to set up the ambush.
