Summary posted:

  • They wanted to see how interleaved turns worked in XCOM and how players would react to the different tactical challenges.
  • They want to see how people react to set characters
  • Set after Successful XCOM 2 campagin (secretly being an Advent victory game it isn't)
  • The humans, hybrids, and aliens are all referred to as victims. City 31 is a chance at co-existence but the peace is fragile, and underground threats are driving the city to chaos.
  • It's canon
  • Non death isn't done since XCOM 1 and 2 are more wars of attrition compared to Chimera
  • You can still lose on a strategic level.
  • Possibly hardcore mode with perma death?
  • First playthrough players only have Godmother, Terminal, Cherub, and Verge at the beginning. More are unlocked later. Replays have all characters you've unlocked.
  • More opportunities to hear combat chatter and see how agents interact with each other.
  • Short announcement to release schedule is because it is neither sequel nor expansion. It is not meant to have people wait too long and is also hoping to attract new players.

I like her being racist to non-Earth-born aliens because it's a very interesting bit of world building and an unique angle to go at in terms of an alien character in a post-XCOM 2 world, and that it's such a swerve from what most people were expecting for a snek waifu character. It makes her a lot more interesting than if she was just "token snek girl".

The people who unironically say she's great purely because they identify with her being racist are scum though.

The lovely thing about new character mods is that they won't have the conversations in between missions with the other characters, if they even have voice work at all.

Actually depending on how they do it they might still be able to have em, just no voice work.

Also I want a mod that makes it so all stuns hit for 2 turns so it actually does something. The 1 turn stuns etc are loving worthless.

Make sure they don't die or you get penalized. Enemies don't deliberately target them and they run away from enemies if they get too close. If one of your guys gets close to them, they'll head out the exit and off the level.

IMO they're mostly there so you can't always throw explosives around willy nilly and to be chryssalid targets (who do deliberately target civvies).

I had a fun moment where a farmer with a shotgun wrecked some alien on his own. I headcanon'd that one of the next batch of recruits was him getting hired on the spot.

I've got the same feeling. At first I justified it by telling myself that Chimera Squad is a military unit, not actually police, but...sending military in to do the job of policing actually feels worse.

But you're not being sent in against police targets, you're being sent in against paramilitary forces. Like out of all of them Grey Phoenix is the closest to being topical, what with being the minority group wanting better for themselves (by loving off in a spaceship).

Chimera Squad's premise is definitely iffy especially with everything happening nowadays, but you're not violently suppressing peaceful protests with "nonlethal" weaponry, you're fighting heavily armed insurgents with access to military weaponry. Hell, during Grey Phoenix's investigation peaceful protests (and presumably the violent suppression) were going on, however Chimera Squad had no part in that.

I mean you could make the argument it's normalizing that sort of thing, but you're explicitly not part of the regular police force.

Just started playing this and am a bit confused about the dlc. Not sure if I'm just being stupid and missing something obvious, but I can't seem to get the dlc missions to function. My first go with the tutorial turned on the missions came up like they are apparently supposed to, but on starting a new campaign they don't.

I'm currently playing without WOTC, so the checkbox that comes up at the start of the campaign just has the two options for Alien Hunters and Shen, but no matter if they're ticked or not the special weapons will be available to buy in engineering straight away after the first mission. I've played further on a few times and at some point the viper king will appear in a random mission without being found first in the special dlc one which does not appear on the map at all. As far as I can tell, the game is acting as if the boxes for the "optional narrative content" are unchecked.

Any ideas? This is the switch version by the way, so it's not a mod conflict.

Make sure you turned off "Integrated DLC" when you make a new game.

Every XCOM fan should try out Troubleshooters. It's a great take on the genre and if you liked Chimera Squad's combat you'd like Troubleshooters' if you're fine with some anime story and a small bit of indie jank.

It's about the cost of Chimera Squad but like the length and expansiveness of the main XCOM games. I'm 120 hours in and I'm still getting new systems to learn about. It does the difficulty curve better than XCOM too IMO since the enemies also escalate in bullshit the same amount as you. So you're still gonna be challenged even with your super OP units, but not to the extent that you don't feel powerful.

Speaking of fantasy!XCOM I had a game concept where you essentially lead an XCOM-like organization that's a coalition of various fantasy races against a necromancer threat. You'd start off with generic unnamed mook units divided up into certain classes, with the upgrade tree being the same across members of the same class. Once they gain enough experience or did a notable feat, they'd be promoted to a hero unit, which would have in addition to the core upgrade tree additional upgrade trees based on the feats they pulled off. For example, an archer that repeatedly hit long range low accuracy shots would on promotion get an upgrade tree focused on boosting long range attacks, while an archer that did lots of close range attacks would get one suited for that, a soldier who survived brawls with a lot of enemy units would get upgrades related to fighting hordes, and someone who kept missing every high accuracy attack would get an upgrade tree based on still achieving damage despite misses. In this way each one of your heroes would be unique and play into the personal narrative the player makes for every XCOM moment.

You would also have a relationship system between heroes. For example, two heroes who get the "lovers" trait may get bonuses depending on proximity and protecting the other from harm, while two heroes with the "rivals" trait will get bonuses from seeing the other in combat in an attempt to one up the other. You also be able to have heroes mentor a mook in order to have a bit more control over making more heroes, with the mentor giving one of their upgrade trees to the mook they're mentoring.

I think playing into the less advanced setting would also be a good idea. Since travel times would be longer, in order to respond to threats you'd need to establish multiple bases, and in order to staff them you'll need to spread out your roster of heroes and mooks. This means missions will always have different people fighting, since your garrison in the mountains may have lots of close range fighters while the one near the coast has more ranged magic users, meaning even if you're facing the same threat you'll have to react to them differently.
