aaaaaaaaactuallyyyyyy protected memory is good and most programs are too dumb to know how to use memory and computers are much more stable because of it

286 had memory protection

what I thought it was 386 that was the first PC that coup for example run UNIX or whatever my youth has been destroyed
|
# ? Feb 5, 2016 03:48 |

you have to have memory protection for UNIX. the early versions of UNIX were developed on computers that didn't have it. and didn't Microsoft have xenix running on plain ol 8086es?
|
# ? Feb 5, 2016 03:51 |
|
yeah that's why I said 286 supremacy coz I know Linux is a 386 os and no older and I was also assumed 386 was like the "base" architecture things were based on and it was a fundamental jump from 286 and I thought protected memory was the thing that made it set the future

echinopsis posted:when u think about it, it's actually totally bullshit that on MY computer that I OWN that I can't just poke any memory point just write your own kernel driver that does only that and make it run at the appropriate level and maybe still have to diable some features in teh os settings
