Traditions of the Trade is such a great mission. Codename 47 is still a great game in spots if you have tolerance for old school game jank. Just ignore some of the levels like.... Most of them.

This has always been one of my tip top favorite series (it's a loving murder-themed puzzle game!) and as long as we pretend Absolution doesn't exist it's one of the best series of all time. I'm BEYOND excited for the new title but I had a friend who invited me over after he got alpha access and let me play it. It's pretty much Blood Money 2 with some sensibilities learned from Absolution. It's real good. Sadly without Kyd doing the soundtrack it might as well be garbage.

Here's something OP-worthy:

The Steam version of Contracts is FINALLY back (after licensing issues with one of my favorite bands, Clutch) but it has a gamebreaking bug in that IT HAS NO SAVE FOLDER! But this is fix-able. Navigate to your Contracts directory (Steam/Steamapps/common/Hitman Contracts/) and just create a new folder called "save". Done, now the game will properly save and you can stop restarting from step one like it's an NES title.

Criken's Hitman video exploits the AI and game to hilarious degrees.

I took the first level in Blood Money and slowly killed everyone on the map. It was a nice surprise when the newspaper at the end actually reflected no witnesses.

Also it's just fun to kill people, a lot of people, even people you're not supposed to. This series makes killing everyone fun.

Absolution's stealth was literally just stay out of sight and DON'T look like the guys you're trying to get past. It was awful.

There was some mild nuance to it and to my fault I treated it like any other Hitman title and played on the highest no-help difficulty I could. Playing through it on 360 after it went free I set it to easy and literally killed everyone I possibly could and it was okay.

But I would still stand by the argument that Absolution's stealth was an unintuitive broken loving mess and the fact that it relied on Instinct so much was a large part of why.

Absolution's main problem was that the game/levels were designed in service to its loving badbadbadbad story and so they were mostly HORRIBLE A-to-B linear levels. Anyone who says they weren't doesn't understand that a loop ending in the same place five feet down is still a line.

Also then mere mention of its checkpoint system should be enough to show how garbage that game was.

I get what you're saying but for Hitman I'd lump them together. You're right about the shooting however. Even though Freedom Fighters was great IOI still didn't have shooting down 100%. That said, the cheats for Codename 47 and Freedom Fighters were great. Free camera, time scale, and ioinailgun... :allears:

I read somewhere that the RIDICULOUS and gross oversexualization of both sexes was due to an artistic choice to show how out of touch and disgusted 47 was with people. They look gross because to him they are gross, etc. I'm pretty sure this was just some internet theorycrafting in order to explain away why the series always has HUUUUUGE... Tracts of land... Either way, it was good enough to be believable if you so chose to.

I love the way the story is literally almost not-there in Blood Money until the last few missions. The fact that, unless you actively listen and seek it out and follow it you can get royally hosed in You Better Watch Out... is great. That load screen with the '?' over the silhouette and then the whole sequence involving that was the perfect storytelling for this series.

In theory yes but I saw someone posting that they attempted that with The Division and Sony's support was ignoring their explicit ToS wording and refused to refund them, just give them store credit or some poo poo.

e: ^^^ They do not. It's unfortunate.

I'd bet more on money than boredom. While he's doing to same series and they all sound like Jesper Kyd there's almost no recurring themes between each soundtrack. I don't imagine it'd be like a John Williams, "How can I make a thirteenth variation on this one track?"

I always felt sorry for the tutorial target in BM. It seems like he's completely guilt ridden about what happened and it looked like the whole thing ruined his life too. Also the guy in A New Life was completely innocent, IIRC, you even kill his wife as a bonus objective. You basically orphan a teenage girl at her birthday party because her daddy was a snitch. 47 also kills that nice post man in a cut scene later.

At one point someone pointed out to me he did some lovely things with the lawsuit that made me less sympathetic but I can't remember what.

A New Life was innocent? Just a rat? Not a reason not to kill him, the game actually REWARDS killing every rat on an earlier level.

The introduction of the rating system has singlehandedly saved countless digital lives. She would never live if it weren't such a point of pride to get SA.

Hey to people playing these for the first time: Forget about Silent Assassin your first time through. It's always fun to work towards and if you can get it on your first attempt good for you. But just play each hit however and enjoy. SA is usually meant for after you know the timing and locations of a level.

But really, is anyone reading this thread playing these fresh?

Yeah, the alpha showcased really well the spread of information is great in the new one. No longer is getting busted once the end of a disguise. You can actually run down someone who knows you OR KILL ALL THE GUARDS LOOKING FOR YOU and you're clear again. It's a nice mechanic and it was fun watching the map markers change color as they ran to tell each other.

That sounds really awesome except I remember saying the same about Guild Wars 2's missable events but then when I wasn't at the level cap in a month and missed a few I thought it was less awesome. Missable content is actually not-good.

BUT! Maybe these targets will occasionally resurface or if they don't the various unlocks cycle.

Let's get the story straight on this, because the claim that his price is too high or he's too busy is bullshit speculation. Kyd wasn't even approached for Absolution.

We have no idea if he was approached for Hitman 6 but I doubt it. When asked about it back in 2014, all he said was that he wouldn't be doing the new Hitman. He was busy at the time (working on 4 games) but that wasn't the reason he gave for not doing the soundtrack. Don't blame Kyd for being picky when IOI's stupidity is a better target.

It's not far fetched considering the fit the fanbase threw when Bateman was dumped. IOI doesn't seem to know what things to keep a death grip on.

I can't play because it's CONSTANTLY spamming me that it can't save the game (like a PS2 missing the memory card) and when I say not to retry it goes ahead and retries anyway. It's drat near unplayable and Googling it and checking the Steam forums make it seem like I am the absolute only person having this issue. Restarting it let me play the guided tutorial but on the second one where it's open I got the same issue. Really frustrating bug.

Apparently restarting it five times is all that it needed to FINALLY work.

Did my usual Hitman thing of killing everyone I could stealthily on the freeform ship. Got about a dozen bodies before people started freaking out. The thing is, the crowds aren't real people (you can't tell because they don't have dots on the minimap and they aren't highlighted in instinct) so when I shot a few people on one of the outside stairs and they slid to the deck with the party only the "real" NPCs freaked out. The party just kept going even with a dead body right next to it and a handful of people running around freaking out. Either way, everything else seems incredibly on point and I'm going to be playing around today to see just how much I can go HUDless/hintless.

Dark_Swordmaster
Oct 31, 2011
Yeah, I can totally get dude-from-RPS' complaint about things ONLY happening when you trigger them and then going on a loop, but that could just be the bits we've seen. The old Hitman games had EXACTLY that in addition to the levels moving on a set timeframe.

Dark_Swordmaster
Oct 31, 2011
Well alright, they had that in so much as "You need to do this to start the loop." But it was still present, just nowhere NEAR as aggressive.

e: Also I tried playing without most of the HUD elements off and the mechanics rely on them almost too heavily to do that. Without the suspicion indicator and the dots over NPC heads you can EASILY get caught without knowing who did it. Losing instinct isn't a huge deal but losing it and the minimap means doors are a loving crapshoot since you can no longer look through keyholes. I don't mind using the HUD as it's relatively unobtrusive but the dream of playing Pro without a HUD is a lot more distant this time around.

Till Death Do Us Part has a coin lying on the ground in the corner that shooting will cause a dozen naked men to come charging at you to come applaud you.

Curtains Down has a bunch of rats wandering the back halls that if you shoot all of them it spawns a key for a locked door. Behind this door is a tiny poker game being played by rats.

This series has always had the weirdest and best easter eggs. What are some of the others?

Also those trailers make me sad that the only films we'll likely ever get are poo poo because drat, a proper hitman film could actually work if done right.

A proper Hitman film is an INTERPOL agent globetrotting to various crime scenes and getting stumped/making brilliant deductions before showing us the hit. Similar to Boondock Saints but with more focus on the mystery and technical prowess of the hit.

Speak for yourself, I played the game in online co-op with a drug fiend and we had an insane amount of fun just reveling in it. I'm not about to say it was of any quality but it was a fun lovely action game where everything is just wonderfully unpleasant. I actually loved the two main characters because they're loathsome horrible irredeemable pieces of poo poo and the game does nothing to dissuade that. Every cutscene is, "Oh they're finally getting what they deserve!" before they somehow don't and you have to shoot a lot more people.

I love the K&L games and I am the only one. Too bad K&L2 guaranteed CTD's unless you pull your ethernet cable now. Last I checked there was no fix as of a couple years back.

Steam is having a Square Enix sale weekend so if you want the older Hitman titles they're cheap as gently caress.

Or the occassionial terrorist attack, hiding a bomb in a gift box or food tray and dropping it on a crowded dance floor.
