The party’s caravan, with the addition of Jihae, has been traveling for days to the village of Haran located northeast of the village of Celik, but some time’s travel from the ruins of Kalidnay. He hasn’t spoken much, keeping all conversation strictly related to the business of returning the gods. Despite the nature of the conversation, he shares his hopes and goals with a sort of glee and optimism rarely heard in any Athasian conversation. Around the nightly campfires, Jihae has shared his knowledge of the gods and the world before their departure with the party. He tells you that there were no seas of silt – rather flowing oceans of water, full of fish to catch and eat. The rolling dunes were once hills covered in flowers and trees. One night he becomes so animated in explaining the supposed location of a great forest that he nearly catches his robes aflame. As the party continues to travel, his manner fades from gleeful to stoic. The night before arriving at Haran, he explains to you that he is accompanying you personally on this task in part to vouch for your presence at the village, and also to inquire to recent events on his own. Grimly, he informs you that he and his colleagues maintain a network of trusted messengers and scouts. The scout who was sent to this village has not made contact with himself or any of his colleagues in weeks – a highly unusual occurrence for this particular scout… “All of our associates are fine folk, and keep in as regular contact as possible – but this particular youngster? We always know his locations and activities - whether we wish to or not, to be honest. This is truly unlike him to not even send word that anything was afoot. His unfortunate disappearance has come at a rather inopportune time. This village is of vital importance to us. There is a young boy there who is of great importance to our mission. Our scout was meant to collect him and bring him to me, but it seems we will have to do so ourselves. I do hope that no harm has befallen our scout…” On that somber note, the party caravan arrives at the village the next midmorning. The village is nestled at the foot of a high mesa. Scattered around the outskirts of the simple hovels appear to be humanoid bones, picked and bleached clean. Here and there are corpses, with hollow bellies and gaping, empty mouths. The village is silent, beyond the sound of sand being blown against the hovels. Jihae’s face falls, and he simply whispers “oh, no…” ------------ OOC Thread Posting Guidelines: edit: I would like everyone to make a round, 80x80 character token! All posts should start with your token [Name] <- This is a link to your character sheet/post [HP:10/10][AC:14] [Hit Dice:1/1][Hero Points:5] <- (these can go in a footer instead if you feel it works better; Hit Dice=recovery hit dice) [any other character info] <- (spells/maneuver dice/other limited use stuff/etc) that you need to post can go here too! (these can also go in a footer, which I'd probably prefer over directly up top) * "In character dialogue in quotes" * In character actions/descriptions/etc in plain text * out of character dialogue/etc in italics * Try to bold other characters' names if you are directly addressing them and need a response (to catch their eyes) * Use orokos for your dice rolls, please! * combat/other mechanical actions should be underlined -- example: move to a3 and attack enemy: atk:1d20+2: 18 dmg:1d8+2: 6 and do something else [bonus action] * Please make sure you link every roll you make, preferably not with the bare url. You also don't need to post the raw rolls (the ones [in brackets] on orokos) * Please roll damage at the same time you roll your attack to speed things up a bit. You can do this on orokos by using this syntax: 1d20+3;1d8-1 (edit: If you roll a critical hit (by rolling a natural 20), please roll the extra damage on a second roll on orokos without your added damage bonus (e.g. if your damage is normally 1d8+3, you roll just 1d8 for the bonus damage and add it to the total of the initial damage roll) * Please post what you intend to use your reaction action for at the bottom of your post (BEFORE any footers). If you don't, I'm going to assume you want to use your reaction at the first chance to make an opportunity attack! NOTE: this is the normal use case of a reaction; if you just want to do this, you could elide it from your post (though I'd prefer you didn't! you could just put like [REACTION: 1st OA]) Melchiresa fucked around with this message at 03:01 on Mar 29, 2016 |

The shadow is attempting to whisper loudly, but it's hard to discern what it's saying. TychoBrahesNose posted:Are there any natural phenomena could have caused the destruction of the entire village in this fashion? Nature (Intelligence): 1d20+2 20 You notice that the corpses that have not fully decomposed or been picked clean seem to have been relatively healthy people...once. The bones are clean, and seem to have many scratch marks on them. There are no signs in the village that any sort of disease has struck - no bodies are burnt, no graves were dug. TychoBrahesNose posted:Are the animals behaving normally for kanks/erdlus/whatever? Are they scared, hungry, enraged? Do they look like they're diseased or otherwise physically impaired? Animal Handling (Wisdom): 1d20+5 19 The carru are lethargic and appear to have lost weight - not enough that bones have become visible, but enough to cause alarm. At the moment they are attempting to eat some dry shrubs growing near the mesa foot, but seem unsatisfied with this option. Surely no handler worth his salt would allow his herd to be in such a state - suggesting that the handler has surely perished.

Sorry for the delay everyone! The figure in the tent frantically waves both arms. Eventually, the figure pauses and observes his surroundings. The figure ever so cautiously steps outside of the hut - barely even leaving the door frame. He attempts to carefully project his voice, seeming as though he is trying to avoid drawing attention (although there are no immediate signs of anything to avoid), and calls out "have you gone mad? come inside! quickly!" and motions to the interior of his hut.

As he circles around the fire, he peers into the other dwellings nearby to make sure there's no one else there, waiting to ambush them. You see a few stragglers. A young woman and man huddle in the back of their dwelling, crying quietly. In another appears to be a teenaged boy - his face is tear streaked and he is visibly quivering. All of them recoil in fear as Obsidian peers into their homes. Waador posted:The woman continues her ritual while the others approach, preferring to rely upon fact rather than gut feeling when it comes to matters of disease and pestilence. A moment is spared, however, for caution. A glance towards the caravan suggests that Jihae should get into cover, in case danger looms near yet unseen. Jihae smiles gently and sighs. "I appreciate your forethought, young lady, but this man is a friend. He seeks only to protect us." He moves forward, boldly, towards the waving figure. slydingdoor posted:"Hmph, it appears I will have to take the risk myself." Haffanu stealthily climbs the mesa, on the lookout for all the bandits hiding up there no doubt. Without Sid as a healer or second set of eyes. Sometimes the only way to get the help you needed was to get into trouble. Hopefully a shield and studded leather would be enough to survive it. As you reach the top of the mesa, you get a good overview of the town - you can see more skeletons and some body parts partially mummified by sand and sun. You don't notice anything hiding immediately on top of the mesa.

I meant to add this into my previous post, but I felt it was important enough to stand aloneLook Around You posted:Once he's close enough to the man to speak normally, he asks, "Why must we come inside? What threat is out here that attacks man and yet not his beasts?" The man furrows his brow and simply states "A threat that finds man a more valuable target than his beasts. We have been under attack from the skies for weeks by a band of Aarakocra warriors and divers. They have picked us off one by one - they leave the bodies to intimidate us. All of our bravest warriors have fallen - how does one without wings defend from the sky?" Jihae shakes his head wearily. "What of the boy? Did he survive this siege?" The man glances at the ground and shifts his weight awkwardly. "I am unsure. He may be amongst the bones scattered around the village. He may yet live, taken from us by those cursed scavengers. Who can say where to, though? With it being too dangerous to even stick one's head out for too long, it would be a fool's errand to search for him." The man dryly replies, "I wasn't exactly planning to remain outside and count their exact numbers. There are at least two that I could tell. After they are done assaulting us, they seem to return to the top of the mesa - I'm uncertain of which part, however."

Look Around You posted:"What of the boy then?" Ja'eel asks. "If he yet lives, he would certainly be on the mesa with the Aarakocra. We will have to go up there regardless. Though if they fly in waves, we might ambush the first shift and search the mesa for the second and the boy once they are dealt with. It would surely be easier to assault a weakened force." The man pauses in thought. "They must come in waves - they assault us at all hours. Some of us tried to escape in darkness. Obviously without success. There seem to be some pauses during the day. Fortunately, you seem to have arrived during one."

After all, I was scouting alone, not for lack of asking. The man thinks deeply for a moment. "Two waves come and go. The beasts seem to fly in pairs. I believe their shift changes grant them an hour's rest. The longest break seems to happen when the sun is at its highest - none of us would dare try to escape then. With us being fewer in number, they seem to have grown a little slack in keeping watch over us." TychoBrahesNose posted:"So: we climb the mesa and take the fight to them. Glad to see you're still alive, Purplie! I got worried I apologize for my delay as well - life happened for a few days. The elder stiffens up and glances through a small round window. "By the positioning of the sun, another wave is due-" Before he can finish his statement, he ducks from the window and presses himself against the nearby wall. Shadows swoop around on the white sand so quickly that gives the appearance of clouds blocking the sun. There is barely a sound, beyond squawks of frustration and rustling feathers as the creatures land. The two divers choose to land on top of the elder's hut - surveying the village. One begins to speak. "There were surely more villagers last shift! The whole fun is the hunt!" His companion squawks, displeased with his partner's whiny tone. "Hush! This is simply part of the chase. If it's food you desire, you forget that we DO have rations to spare, should we need to." The first diver ruffles his feathers and caws in protest. "That's hardly any fun. You don't HUNT your rations. Besides, we were told NOT to eat those. Salleek says they were important." Inside the hut, the elder appears puzzled and whispers "rations?" The first, more rational, bird-man squawks and flaps his wings loudly as if to end the conversation. "Enough! I see no villagers to dispatch at the moment. Their times will surely come, but for now, we must return to camp. Salleek said this shift was to be brief." The second creature ruffles his feathers - seemingly disappointed. With a loud flapping of wings, the divers take off. Some vulture squawks and hisses, for your listening and referencing pleasure - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kw6yu6MFCl0 Also, sorry this was a little long. I was feeling kinda wordy tonight and wanted to have some fun with the Aarakocra

Sorry for the delay everyone - life got a bit hectic for a little while. We are NOT using a group roll for the stealth checks - one person being quiet can't cover for another person...not. This is going to be a short update to keep things moving - I expect to have combat stuff posted in the next couple of days The party comes upon the Aarakocra camp. Some divers appear to be tending to their javelins, while others seem to be casually scouting the perimeter of the area. However, the party doesn't get much time to explore the camp further... "Intruders!"a diver squawks. The diver takes to the air to rouse its comrades, squawking and shrieking to raise the alarm.
