SMS stands for Standard Message Standard. it's used across the world for doing things on phone: it's 140 characters long but nowadays phones have better ways of dealing with it

iMedsage is like SMS but for people with iPhones. it's better but you just don't know

MMS is for gifs

Facebook messager this is ok and it's good how it's a seperate app. it's sens pictures and thumbs

snapchat is pretty drat cool but yellow is bogus and the filters are so hot right now

kik is pretty solid and I like that it has its own emoji set which is conserved across platforms

irc isn't really instant measaging

Skype had a solid instant message aspect I will have to say I felt good about it

what'sapp seems ok but you need to know a phone number?

ask.fm isn't really IM at all it's more about cyber bullying

some of these work only on phones and some not so much
some also exist that aren't on this list

Uhm excuse me but the SMS length is 160 characters per message, 140 is for twitor poo poo or sth. And if you really need to get poetic you can chain SMS together if the phone supports it.

SMS is also expensive as poo poo datawise, a couple of cents for under a kilobyte of data, what is this poo poo??

sms is 160 characters but 7 bits per character so only 140 bytes

i remember over a decade ago paying like 30 australian cents per sms lol

sametime is really good and you can send ur own gifs and stuff and it has a reall nice screen cap tool in there. its great. you can disable that auto away thing if u really want

I set up a little script to run as a scheduled task on windows a few years ago to launch and close our IM client at a random time +/- 30 minutes from 6AM and 6PM because my boss started doing this crap

ahem i think you mean skype for business. also sometimes it somehow breaks my ability to log in to my vnc unless i cancel my skype login.
