Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu or Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- is a web novel turned light novel turned manga turned anime adaptation from the studio White Fox, famous for forum favourites Steins;Gate and Katanagatari. The director is Watanabe Masaharu (Wakaba Girl) and the screenwriter is Yokotani Masahiro (The Devil Is a Part-Timer), with music by Suehiro Kenichirou (primarily jdrama). Subaru is a regular boy in his final year of high school on his way home from the store, when he's suddenly dumped into a bustling street market in Another World filled with Fantasy Creatures and People of Mystical Races. So far, so cliché. What makes this series stand out a bit is that the hero really is a regular guy, with no powers or magical skills at all. The only thing he's equipped with is the power of not giving up, which comes in handy, because he keeps dying. And every time he dies, he pops up right back where he started, in that street market, all body parts intact. In other words, he's practically living out a Dark Souls game, where he's always respawning at the last auto-save point. Expect gore. The original web novel was written by Nagatsuki Tappei and published on the web novel portal Narou, where it's currently ranked #27 overall. It started in 2012 and is still getting (free) updates there, even as the paper light novel publication is trying to catch up. The written material is up to 10100 pages, which is the equivalent of over 30 light novel volumes, so they're not likely to run out of stuff to adapt, and the anime is supposedly scheduled for ~25 episodes. Crunchyroll is streaming it on Sundays at http://www.crunchyroll.com/rezero-starting-life-in-another-world- Official website | MAL

If he starts making different choices, nobody knows how things will end up.

Jackard posted:Yeah! If he tries something different, his dumb rear end might not die!! His primary concern isn't just avoiding death, it's getting closer to Emilia, as has been established from the very first episode. If all he wanted was to stay alive, he could simply run away from that crazy shop of abdominal surgery in the beginning. Since he seemed to have a good thing going with the moonlight conversation, he was probably hoping to reach the same place again this time, but screwed it up at some point, and ended up with goddamn rabies or something instead. I don't really know how familiar the Japanese audience is with ~butterfly effects~, but it's possible that the author is trying to introduce a largely ignorant readership to that very concept with this arc. It's the first time Subaru is faced with a reset after properly realizing what was going on, and at a glance it seems reasonable to think "If I do the same things again, the same outcome will be reached!" to some degree. It's not even like anyone's ever tested the Butterfly Effect theory, because how many times do real people loop in time? Relying absolutely on sci-fi tropes being true seems a bit foolish.

Had a look at the combined web novel PDF, and with episode 9, the anime has covered the equivalent of 1014 pages, out of a total 10103 pages. This means one episode is around 1% of the material, so this season of anime will probably end up adapting about a quarter of what's currently available. So... three more seasons after this one? For reference, volume 1 of the light novel edition takes 288 pages to cover 337 pages of the web novel PDF, so it's not a completely accurate estimation. Minus some for illustrations and whatnot, I guess.

I suppose there's a ~character moment~ in this episode where she goes from Onee-sama to Onee-chan in some display of childhood acceptance or whatever, so I can see the wish to make it clear to subtitle viewers. Not entirely sure if "sissy" is appropriate, mind you.

Kytrarewn posted:Having not read LN/Web novels, I don't have any context for this, but, according to a guy on reddit who went to a talk given by the producers , this cour will be dedicated entirely to the third arc. Supposedly arc 3 takes up 6 volumes of the light novels, so we'll be going down to 2 episodes per book as opposed to the rate of 3 eps / vol we've had up to this point. Bit worried about how much they'll need to skip.

BD sales figures for the first volume are out, and it's a bit disappointing with 6346 units sold in this first week. It'll probably rise a bit in following weeks, but it's currently behind Jojo, Kabaneri and Haifuri, while Bungou is right at its heels. It's an overall poo poo season sales wise, though, since nothing's broken the 10k barrier. Edit: Also new webisode thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ox-7QBAgils

I think Puck just went full wrathful elder demon after his beloved daughter died and killed anyone who approached out of spite, including Subaru for his failure to protect Emilia. But if anyone we've met so far knows about his power, I guess it'd be Puck. I interpreted it as Puck having gone quite insane, and just sent Subaru off to give his precious Emilia some company. Vanilla Mint Ice posted:Anyone jumping into the web novel, I recommend diligently starting from the second arc instead of jumping straight into where the anime is at right now I read the first volume of the light novel a couple of years ago, so I'll start from the beginning, skimming a bit, to see what differences there are. God drat it, I'd planned to read the Toradora author's new novel this week. Finishing Re:Zero is going to take all month.

So, I didn't notice it until I read the author's live-tweets, but apparently the reason Ram shows up in a different place in the second loop is because she protected the kids' shed instead of Rem.

Hrm, I've read the first two arcs of the web novel now, and in my terrible opinion the anime version is quite a bit better than the original. They've added a bunch of nice scenes, and removed some bad ones, plus stripped away the creepier lines. Subaru is also way more annoying in the novel, since there's like three times as much dialogue, where he does nothing but spout memes. Hopefully things improve once I catch up with the anime and can stop getting disappointed by the differences.

Or is this just a KH2 type scenario where the previous life doesn't really matter at all? His parents are mentioned every now and then in the narration. Mostly in relation to mayonnaise.
