Best tip I have from friends in the area is to find the politically-aligned bars and avoid them at all costs

Right, the dating scene is uniquely horrible in every city. DC has ambition and people coasting on the "power is the ultimate aphrodisiac" principle but if the local dating pool weren't that way you'd just end up having another problem define them. Here in Austin the primary complaint I get from women friends is that the dating pool is stuffed with underemployed or unmotivated man-children.

Hell if there was no issues people would probably complain about how it isn't possible to choose between all the people they want to date.

The real meat of the issue is that in the last thirty or so years (probably longer) there has been a concerted effort to create a message that anyone that needs help is a failure and deserves whatever bad thing happens to them.

The obvious intent of that is to destroy the social safety net so you get idiots like this woman thinking that any significant part of her taxes go towards this man's family's food stamps.

I disagree with your assumption here and the intent you ascribe to it.

I think people classify food stamp users and the generally less fortunate as fundamentally broken mooching losers because that lets them not face the horrible reality of the randomness in this world. "There, but for the grace of God, go I" is a really really scary concept, so people instead cling to the idea of a just world. Psychological tests show that people are really freaked out by the idea that randomness is in charge and that they have no control over things that impact them.

The person doing the attacking in the video is less trying to belittle that person and more trying to reassure themselves that they are not at risk of finding themselves in the same situation.

They are also an rear end in a top hat.

In good news the CFPB is going to ban mandatory arbitration clauses that prohibit class action lawsuits for a variety of financial services :

quote:

which would apply to bank accounts, credit cards and other types of consumer loans, seems almost certain to take effect, since it does not require congressional approval.

........

The new rules would mean that lenders could not force people to agree to mandatory arbitration clauses that bar class actions when those customers sign up for financial products. The changes would not apply to existing accounts, though consumers would be free to pay off their old loans and open new accounts that are covered.

.......

“It’s going to spell the end of arbitration,” said Alan S. Kaplinsky, a lawyer with the firm Ballard Spahr in Philadelphia, who pioneered the use of arbitration clauses to thwart class-action lawsuits and thus opposes the proposed rule. “It will lead to a huge upsurge in litigation and take away a benefit to consumers.”

Good god I hope this catches on and spreads to everything, everywhere. Binding arbitration clauses are such unbelievably transparent horse poo poo designed for absolutely no reason other than loving people over and circumventing the entire justice system.

It's also some of the most frustratingly disingenuous poo poo for a lawyer to be saying keeping people out of courts and letting paid off third parties decide legal matters is "a benefit" that consumers will be losing.

Unfortunately it will probably take legislation to do that and even with a Democratic majority in both houses there are enough "business friendly" democrats and republicans that a full prohibition on form contracts with binding arbitration would be difficult to get through. A ban on prohibitions on class action waivers might stand a better chance.

Stare decisis means that even with Scalia gone a Supreme Court fix is unlikely as it would require overturning a whole bunch of past (5-4) rulings. The last arbitration case at the Supreme Court shows this in action as it was 6-3 with Breyer and Kagan joining the conservatives in the majority and Breyer saying that the previous decisions made the case pretty open and shut.

Kind of late, but I remember Rove pushed a bunch of state level bans on gay marriage as part of the GOP's get out the vote effort in 2004 , and it was successful. I'm guessing someone thought that might work again and assumed transgender people weren't protected by the recent civil rights cases.

This isn't a get out the vote thing like the gay marriage amendments because those were actually on the November ballots. Instead it seems more like throwing a bone to the Evangelicals to make sure that they don't become disillusioned with the whole politics thing after the drubbing they took on SSM. It is a way for the GOP governments to tell them "we've still got your backs and are listening to your concerns".

Also many GOP legislators and Governors are legitimately True Believers.

There's no way they would just implement a "wherever you want" policy because that is guaranteed to generate angry calls and meetings.

If they did I would expect the actual implementation to be that two formerly gendered single person bathrooms on the other side of the gym will become unisex.

In positive news it looks like there might be some extra cash available for education in most of the nation soon

quote:

DALLAS (AP) Texas' lieutenant governor says the state is prepared to forfeit billions of dollars in federal funding for public schools following an Obama administration directive over bathroom access for transgender students.

Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said Friday that Texas "will not yield to blackmail" and urged superintendents to defy the new federal guidance. The directive says public schools are obligated to treat transgender students in a way matching their gender identity.

The guidance doesn't impose new legal requirements, but rather clarifies expectations for districts receiving federal funds.

Patrick says Texas receives roughly $10 billion in federal education dollars. He didn't say how that money might be replaced. Patrick's remarks came only moments after more than half the state's 1,200 school districts lost a major lawsuit claiming that Texas unconstitutionally underfunds public schools.

The judge that ruled against Obama's Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents continues to issue rather... interesting orders:

quote:

The Brownsville-based judge who halted President Obama’s 2014 executive action on immigration has decided that ethics classes are in order for the attorneys who defended the policy.

In a 28-page order, U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen said the classes are required for the U.S. Department of Justice attorneys who wish to practice in the 26 states that are suing over the immigration policy. The order also told the government to provide Hanen a list of the immigrants who benefited prematurely from the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) policy.

Hanen said his sanctions stem from the administration’s attorneys purposely misleading his court about when the government would begin accepting applications for the program, and how many immigrants were mistakenly awarded work permits before the program was slated to start.

I think for some people its the fact that she stayed with him through out all of those scandals that raises questions about her integrity and is a supposed testament to her power hungry nature.

Trump going after Bill is dangerous because it sets up a potential Checkers Speech where Hillary talks about how she fell in love with Bill and how hard times come to every relationship. About how difficult it was not to just to deal with all the emotions that come along with such accusations and/or what happened but also to do so on the public stage and being unable to tell if it was true or just gossip. Perhaps including a bit about how you are never at your best when someone you love and who loves you hurts you. While not everyone has been cheated on, everyone has had relationship troubles of some sort and they are extremely relatable to on a deep emotional level.

Her campaign no doubt has a rough draft ready to be tweaked to whatever Trump says. Other democrats will go after Trump for misogyny, but short of Trump calling Hillary a bitch to her face in a debate she needs to stay above it.

Yeah but do that and suddenly almost every homeowner in the country is underwater on their mortgage. All those home prices are already artificially raised, so remove the deduction and you have another housing crash instantly. Bad idea. It's the sort of thing that would have to be phased out over a hundred-year timeframe.

Any plan would ideally have a very slow phase out (perhaps a 0.05% reduction in deductibility per day) and also lock in the deduction for the life of the loan.

Even that would risk nuking the market because a large part of the value today is in speculation on the value in the future

It wouldn't solve the problem. Look at prices in Philly/NY/SF/DC/LA/etc. 200k isn't enough to get you anything in the city. This program is designed for younger borrowers and they want to be in the city, not 2 hours away on a farm. 200k is a really low price for a house and won't let you buy anywhere but the midwest and rural areas.

People want to be in the cities because cities are the only places where there are any drat jobs now. Humans have historically structured our cities and transit so that the maximum commutes were about an hour, and that seems to be the maximum on average that people are willing to deal with. Inner ring suburbs have largely stymied any attempt to densify them so people get the choice of a) high rent on downtown high rises, b) absurd prices on inner ring single family houses, or c) hell commutes from the exurbs.

Ideally there would be a gradual transition from high rise to mid rise to low rise/garden multifamily housing before hitting the single family home areas, but that would ruin the neighborhood character and threaten the house values of older voting people and we can't have that.

At least no matter how bad we've got it we aren't Canada or Australia. Those countries have it worse than it was at the peak of housing bubble mania here.
