hey what was that mod called that was like Counterstrike except you could only talk via voice, everyone died in 1-2 shots and all the guns could only be aimed by looking down the sights? I remember if you could get the drop on the other team with the mac-10 you could waste the entire side in like one big spray.

They emulated the lovely "feed the Heavy medpacks to make them 'invulnerable'" gameplay and not the awesome "cause goddamn havoc and make the other side go bugnuts". If no one plays Heavies in TF2, there's no reason to play Medics, but you always needed at least one Medic in TFC.

Also, hallucination grenades, holy poo poo was that the best reason to play Spy. Screw disguises because they never loving worked, but hallucination gas grenades fed on player paranoia.

Fun fact: disguises worked very well on german servers, since HL was censored. In the original game, the grunt model was replaced by a robot. For tfc, that same robot model was used for ALL classes.

And no, I wasn't a mapper for AHL. I was involved with the skin replacement site. I mainly bugged a guy called Svugg to make more awesome weapon skins, because his poo poo was amazing.

How much do I cum? The answer might surprise you!

Just beat Half-Life last night. Sure Xen starts out all neat and awesome atmosphere but wow it gets bad quick after you kill the Gonarch. The penultimate room full of bad guys is also horrible. Half-life isn't the only game to have a 2nd to last room where they just throw a thousand bad guys at you and THEN you have to fight the final boss.

Awesome game and the balance of combat and weapons is so spot on. One thing I noticed is that through most of the game you are generally lower than 50 health and short on ammo, especially explosives. Definately adds to the experience of just surviving rather than simply blasting everything in sight, even though thats essentially what you end up doing any ways. The scripted AI still holds up. Except for some parts on Xen there are very few moments that when you die you feel cheated by the game. Since it's a product of the 90's I did have to quick save/quick load at certain points but not as much as you would think.

the freakin elevators suck but I thought that the like 30 or so alien eggmen were funny because if you don't know what you're doing you end up with like three times as many dudes to fight

this thread gives me an idea that I'm too lazy/poor/incompetent to make happen, but maybe one of y'all can: imagine a rotating HL mod server, that changes mod maybe once/twice a month with a little website with clear instructions for how to get the mod working. and we (and any pubbies who're interested) can play those mods again in a packed server. It'd bring a tear to my eye.

e: I am an "Idea Man" which was in itself a thing that really got big in the half life mod scene.

getting into total conspiracy stuff but valve pulled the plug on the original TF release if you guys remember

then TFC came out using models and assets and the same art designers from HL

then CS and TFC were the go to games. both got bought by valve. at this point valve has control of both major FPS games that old school and new school gamers play.

HL2 comes out. Ep1 and Ep2. Every one wants Ep3 but nope. Portal 1 and 2. I'm getting my timeline blurred here but I just can't see Valve dropping the conclusion on HL. They have probably scrapped it twice over and are keeping HL3 under tighter wraps than a northrop grumman developing the next stealth bomber.

I can't see Valve dropping their most notable IP and just leaving it like 3D Realms did with Duke Nukem and that cluster gently caress.

who of the original gang that worked on HL and HL2 still works at valve, i suppose that would be the best metric that they are working on it

not that i care to much, i mentioned the duke nukem thing, after a certain point just leave well enought alone and the story to HL was never more than an MIT guy fighting back against all odds. not exactly stuff that needs to be brought to conclusion any ways since the logical ending is that you win either despite the gman or with the help of the gman. frankly it was the atmosphere of HL that worked best and the story was a very distant second. the total bleakness of the scenario and you, mr freeman against all odds.

They need to sidestep again somehow. It's all about you vs the bleakness.

Best thing about avalanche and every other map with lots of enclosed rooms in DOD was taking the bazooka and shooting the ceiling. It would count as a headshot on every enemy in the room, including proned guys most of the time, and you'd hear 4/5 *tink*s and they'd all die

There's no money in Half-Life 3. Hell, the modern gaming target demographic were probably still in diapers when the original Half-Life came out.

There will never be an Episode 3, much less a Half-Life 3, and it is sad. :(

Going with episodic content without planning everything ahead was a loving mistake. If HL2 had ended and there was no follow-up episodes, it would be hella-easier to make a HL3, since you could do a complete reset like the last game and have complete freedom to do whatever you want.

HL3 could easily be marketed to people who grew up on HL2 rather than 1.

And with Valve owning and operating Steam giving it a massive spotlight would hardly be a problem.
