star citizen is really weird

these people have massive elaborate fantasies about the poo poo they are going to be able to do in this game and have like arguments about what ships are better for what things despite the fact that a) the game isn't out and b) the details of the game, as in the mechanics, have not even been finalized yet

im a fuckin eve player and i am amazed at the length of time that people can talk about concept art of space ships in a game that doesn't exist yet. like i couldnt talk for 20 minutes about a ship in eve and its an actual game with balance and mechanics and im probably at autist level

i guess what im saying is that i play the absolutely most shameful video game possibly of all time and the worst most terrible shitlers in the game whose players have a reputation for being terrible shitlers are still less cringeworthy than anything ive ever seen with regards to star citizen

to their credit, RSI has actually created a lot of really high-quality assets. not all of it is in the alpha, though. there's,

* the racer game thing
* the space stations in the alpha
* the landing zone on the planet (not yet playable)
* all those ships

if they could take all these environments and tie them together in a persistent universe, that alone would equal a substantial amount to explore. whether it's worth $100 million or X years work, i kind of doubt it.

i don't doubt they'll be able to make a really good game. but at the current pace it will probably take them 5-10 years to build all the stuff they promised. maybe that's not so bad, though.

just my 2 cents!!

its naive as fuckin hell to look at the assets theyve created in the context of a persistent universe sandbox mmo and think they have made any progress at all whatsoever. even under their original release criteria of 'a handful of systems to explore' the poo poo they are showing 3 years after the game is supposed to have come out is pretty pathetic.

the stream of smoke collectively blowing out of everyones rear end about how 'immersive' this game will be are loving hilarious, just because a bunch of nerds are walking around on a space station and can undock their ships to shoot each othe doesnt mean that it will even vaguely resemble a 'universe' nor will it be the next-gen super freelancer mmo they think it will be

like their original design doc was a 5-10 year endeavour and the scope of the project has ballooned to such a hilarious degree that even in the most blindly optimistic of light i cant see them pulling any of it off

Yeah that's like Fable fantasizing turned to 11.

One nerd was telling me about how they were going to pilot their corvette with their other 7 buddies all being the crew and how there are going to be 100% fully realistic damage models complete with atmosphere/compression to worry about and there's gonna be 100 other ships nearby all having some massive fight.

I said 'bro EVE can't even do like 1/100th of that without turning into a slideshow' and he said I just didn't know about Chris Roberts.

:shrug:

my dumbass coworker that wont shut up about this game was talking about how he was going to be a trader

except there are no items, nor any way to supply or any demand for items, nor any inventory system at all either.

of course theres a page about how its going to work, maybe, possibly

quote:

These goods are not assigned an arbitrary fixed price at each location. Instead, we are creating an organic system that keeps track of how much of everything is available, how much it is needed, where it is needed, and what individuals are willing to pay to get it.

Because the simulation reflects a real population going about their business, if a player is not available to carry ore from Ellis to Terra, an NPC cargo hauler will step in and run the route. If escorts are needed, and players are unavailable to escort that transport, then NPC pilots will escort the vessel. Pirates, too, might be NPC or player ships.

Meanwhile, the nodes that are producing, refining, and consuming these goods are run by non-player characters, as well. As players progress in the game, they may choose to purchase some of these facilities and take over the day-to-day oversight.

Business goes on, and players step in wherever they wish to take part.

Wait, Pillars of Eternity? Pillars of Eternity self-censored to be PC? There was a guy who went insane because he was a rapist raider in one life and then his own born-of-rape-and-taught-to-kill-his-mother's-rapists son in the next life.

Like, what did this guy want from it? More of it? Tone down the "... and it was a very bad thing" message? An interactive flashback to that guy's whole deal? A rape event, complete with artwork, where your skills, stats, and reputation unlock new options?

most video game players have the story comprehension ability of a third, maybe fourth grader

try talking to people about bioshock and see how many of them say something like 'rapture failed because fontaine introduced capitalism'

you dont have to go read between the lines the game literally tells you the fuckin broken down hellscape the game takes place in failed due to ryan's arrogance but people legit think the games vague theme is the exact opposite of what it is b/c they watched the opening 'sweat off my brow' speech and liked it

thats besides the fact that andrew ryan is an anagram of ayn rand and the one major choice you have in the game is to murder children for personal gain, a thing that under ayn rand's philosophy would be a moral imperative to do so
