Monster Hunter is an Action-RPG series developed and published by Capcom. The aim of the game is to hunt the biggest and most dangerous game, so that you can make ridiculous equipment out of it and take on even scarier creatures. You can play alone or with up to 3 other manly men or busty babes. Worried village elders or the esoteric Hunter's Guild will send you out on dangerous missions, with little in way apart from what you bring yourself, to kill these incredible beasts.

Having spawned an entire genre of game that now exists solely on the PSVita aside from this series, this game still manages to be in its own category of game that you will not find anywhere else on the 3DS. This game is raw HUNTING-ACTION! There are no levels or other such nonsense. A high-ranked player survives largely on skill alone, and the difference between newbie and high-level armor is the ability to soak up maybe 2-3 extra hits before dying. Now features riding giant toads and sharks over large cliff faces, because the games weren't ridiculous enough before.

  • There are no 'levels' in Monster Hunter. You unlock additional content by "ranking up" by completing specific missions, which are generally increasingly more difficult hunts.
  • Hunting a monster is not limited to just killing it dead, you can also capture it when it is weak by using a trap and tranquilizers. This will usually result in even more parts obtained.
  • Equipment is crafted by using monster parts that you gather by hunting them or finding them in the field.
  • Increasing your Defense is done by making higher rank armors, however this will not stop you from dying often against the later monsters.
  • Armor Skills. Each piece of armor has a few points of specific skills, once you get enough points from your armor, they will activate. These are the real tools of the hunt. They vary from anything simple like "attack up" to incredibly useful utilities like "auto tracker" or "speed sharpening".
  • There are 14 different weapon classes to hunt with. All of the melee weapons have a "sharpness" rating, which degrades as you use it. It must be restored by stopping to sharpen the weapon. Ranged weapons use ammunition.
  • There is a kitchen that is important to utilize. Combining certain foods/drinks will result in different buffs that will carry over into the missions. You can also acquire specific skills through this method that you usually couldn't otherwise (such as a skill that causes bombs to get bigger, or a skill that makes you able to fall from infinite height and not flinch).
  • Missions are timed. The general limit is 50 minutes, however special instances have a shorter limit. If you don't complete your objective in this time, you fail.
  • You have limited knockouts. If you die 3 times, you fail the mission. In very special instances, you are only allowed a single death.

First Generation:

Monster Hunter
The original game, for PS2. Attacks were controlled with the second analog stick, camera movement with the d-pad, and one of those few games with online play (probably the best on the console).
NA release date: September 2004
PAL release date: May 2005

Monster Hunter Freedom
The PSP port of the original game's JP-only "expansion", for hunting on the go! Features local ad-hoc multiplayer and everything the original had.
NA/PAL release date: May 2006

Second Generation:

Monster Hunter Dos
The sequel to the original, never released outside of Japan. The maps were redone, more online quests added, and a boatload of new monsters introduced to the series.
JP release date: Feburary 2006

Monster Hunter Freedom 2
The PSP port of the second game, because it's a much better game than the first was. However, it's been rendered obsolete by its sequel...
NA release date: August 2007
PAL release date: September 2007

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (Original Thread)
The "compilation" game of Gen 2, just how Ultimate is the Gen 3 compilation. Features all of the monsters up until that point plus several new additions, totaling a massive 57 boss creatures to hunt. If you want to get into the series and have a PSP, this is the title to invest in.
NA/PAL release date: June 2009

Third Generation:

Monster Hunter Tri (Original Thread)
The console reboot of the series. Much of the content has been shaved down or redone entirely. Features far fewer boss monsters and equipment, but looks gorgeous. The game's online servers have been taken down as of Ultimate's release, so High Rank content and the online bosses are no longer accessible.
NA/PAL release date: April 2010

Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (Original Thread)
The 3rd gen PSP/PS3 title, continues where Tri left off by once again retooling how various weapons function and introducing new monsters. If you're not satisfied between Unite and Tri, this is the next stop. Check the original thread for fan translation links and other assorted info.
JP release date (PSP): December 2010
JP release date (PS3): August 2011

Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate (Original Thread)
Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate
Just like Freedom Unite, this is where 3rd Gen will make its final stop, with every monster ever made for 3rd Gen being included plus some extras. 50 total bosses are to be found in this installment. The WiiU version can be played directly online and the 3DS version supports either local play or tunneled online play via a WiiU Console.
JP release date (3DS): December 2011
JP release date (WiiU): December 2012
NA/PAL release date (Both): March 2013

Current Generation:

Monster Hunter 4
The first foray into the Fourth Generation of MH. With the competition of other games encroaching on MH's rather aged mechanics, they took a larger step out of their comfort zone with this entry and added a slew of new upgrades to the game and the engine. It is the first portable game with its own enabled Wi-Fi protocol, there is the new "mounting" mechanic, areas are now designed with an enhanced vertical aspect, two new weapon classes, and underwater fights are out of the game for good this time.
JP release date: September 2013

/ (Original Thread)
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
Despite not being available for WiiU, we still have the same subtitle. This is the version of 4 released to the rest of the world, and the big thing here is a focus on "past favorites". Nearly every monster from 2nd Gen has been brought back to this entry and even more new monsters have been added, providing one of the most varied sets of monsters available in the series.
JP release date: October 2014
NA/PAL release date: February 2015

:siren: Monster Hunter Generations :siren:
The final entry in the fourth generation of Monster Hunter, this one brings in some help from the guys who worked on the Frontier MMO to bring you Hunting Styles to greatly expand upon the way the various weapons and such function. There's a lot of personalization to be had in the way you approach things, and a handful of new monsters exclusive to this title as well as a healthy spattering of monsters from every other previous generation (hence the name).
JP Release date: November 2015
NA/PAL release date: July 15, 2016

Other:

Monster Hunter Frontier
The PC MMO of the series. Currently only running in various asian countries (Taiwan, Japan), it features huge lobbies, a pseudo-leveling system, ludicrous amounts of gear, new maps, and its own set of exclusive beasts (on top of everything that isn't exclusive to MHFU/3rd Generation), totaling at well over 100 different boss monsters to hunt. Play long enough and you'll gain access to completely redone versions of many of the boss monsters, shooting the unique hunt count to over 200. I do play this game regularly, so if you're interested in details, check out the appropriate channel in discord and ping me to ask about it.

Monster Hunter Online
Another PC MMO published by Tencent Games that utilizes the Crytek Engine. It has a lot of distinct differences in the gameplay and is currently stuck in perpetual beta periods, it has been stated that it is unlikely to be released outside of Chinese territories.
:siren: This game is in Open Beta with no region locking if you want to try and get your hands dirty, no quality guarantees though :siren:

How do I know if I'll like this series or not?
There are demos for both 3U and 4U on 3DS (but these are not great representations of your true gameplay experience), and additionally if you own a PSVita there are at least 4 other games that are basically Monster Hunter descendants but far easier to get involved with right away (Toukiden is the most direct parallel, but see also God Eater/Soul Sacrifice/Freedom Wars)
Keep in mind that Monster Hunter is a unique game that doesn't really match any other gameplay style, and often takes 8 or more hours for most people to claim that it "clicked" and they became addicted.

HOW DO I MOVE THE CAMERA WHILE ALSO MOVING MY DUDE?! :byodood:
Lock-on was added just for you! If you don't want to shell out for a New-3DS or a Circle Pad attachment, you can either use the lockon or try to finagle the virtual dpad on the touch screen.

Can I play with people from different regions in 4U/Generation's online?
Yes! The game will support cross-region online play (only between NA/PAL copies of the game).

I see that every other game has an "Ultimate" or "G" version, should I wait for Generation's ultimate version?
Generations is a standalone title that is not going to receive an expansion, so don't feel compelled to wait for a new version of it.

Where do I find X in Monster Hunter Y?
If you're playing Unite, check here or here.
If you're playing Tri, check here.
If you're playing Portable 3rd, check here.
If you're playing Tri Ultimate, check here.
If you're playing 4 Ultimate, check here.

Do I kill it, or capture it?
A timeless question. 90% of the time, the answer is "unless you can only get it from carving, you should capture the monster". Capturing results in rarer rewards overall and generally takes less time.

Which weapon is the best?
Read the weapon guides below and see which one tickles your fancy! There are no longer objectively good/bad weapons in these games anymore, so use your favorites.

Monster Hunter Generations
(AKA Monster Hunter Cross)

3DS is still here to stay, maybe you'll get your high def MH on the NX next year. Or just play one of the PC MMOs because that's the best you get at this point, but those don't have Insect Glaive :colbert:

New to Generations:
  • Hunting Styles! Guild, Aerial, Adept, Striker. Really get deep in there and tweak your playstyle down to the moveset.
  • Hunting Arts! Bigass anime wind slashes, darkness transformations, and more dakka than you can shake an insect glaive at.
  • FOUR whole flagship monsters!
  • Prowler Mode. You like cats? PLAY AS THE CATS.
  • HOLD THE BUTTON FOR CONTINUOUS GATHERING/CARVING
  • Je suis monte! You can now attack the monster while it's being mounted and not worry about interrupting it.
  • Variant Monsters! Instead of G rank, there are now 12 different "hardcore" versions of specific monsters with their own associated swag.
  • Yet more!

The n3DS nub sucks!!
Kind of. It's not a proper analog stick, for Monster Hunter specifically it functions as a virtual d-pad, so only the cardinal directions are even accepted as inputs. Regardless, https://www.reddit.com/r/3DS/comments/44spty/i_replaced_my_cstick_with_a_psp_analog_stick/ this has been met with some positivity

Does this game even have a manual?
Press the home button before launching the game properly to access it on the 3DS.

Which quests do I need to do to unlock more quests?
Check for the 'Key Quest' quests on the pages here (offline) and here (online).

Is there some way to increase my health/stamina?
Before each mission, either talk to the cat chef in the village while playing solo, or have a seat at the lunch tables when online.

Where the gently caress are all of the mining/bug spots?
TBD

PALICO/PROWLERS :byodood:
Check this reddit post

How does mounting actually work??
It's essentially a status on the monster like Paralysis or Poison. Every monster has a base "resistance" to "Mounting" which is reduced by executing attacks against them while airborne. Once you've passed the threshold, the monster will fall to the ground and anybody can walk up to it and automatically mount.
While mounted, the monster will do its best to shake you off and otherwise cause trouble for everybody involved. Mash the A button to bring the meter closer to full, stop mashing and hold R when you see the little monster head turn orange/red until the monster calms down and resume mashing. If you are able to fill the meter before being tossed off, you will have successfully brought down the monster and it serves functionally as a free Stun.
In 4U, it used to be a problem to attack the monster and cause a flinch while it was mounted. This has been changed in Generations, now you absolutely should attack the monster while it's mounted to speed up the knockdown!

What are the hunting horn songs?
Check here.

Does it support cross-region play?
NA and EU/PAL copies can play adhoc and online with each other. JP is still separated.

How do I play online with my 3DS?
On the touchscreen, you can either directly access friends by clicking on them, or you can click the "World Map" button and select "Online Multiplayer" and either create or find a lobby.

How do I upgrade Kitchen Ingredients?
TBD

Gem/Mantle drop rates suck! What do I do?
Break all of the parts, cut the tail, get as many shinies as possible, complete the subquest, make sure to check whether you can get it from carves or capture only. Those 2-3% drop rates may look grim but you have quite a lot of them happening at once.

Where is that program that makes armor sets for me?
Athena's rear end (not updated for English just yet, but should be accurate)

What are Ferocious/Outraged monsters?
It's basically a mechanics-lite version of Frenzy monsters from MH4U. Hit the glowing part to deal more damage, they drop special Ferocious parts at the end of the quest. The hunts are randomly available in HR, so if you don't have a specific one, just complete another hunter to refresh the list.

14 weapon types in all for you to mess around with. There generally isn't a "best" style, so check out the videos and see which you prefer!

Sword and Shield
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knyojXUySfU

Still about the same, this small weapon may look like it's too small and kind of weak, but it makes up for it with near unmatched speed as well as the ability to both block and use items with the weapon drawn. Best utilized as a means of dealing heavy amounts of elemental or status damage while bringing varied item support for yourself and/or your team.

Dual Swords
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3cwr43Qcl2c

This weapon is all about ridiculous offense. You sacrifice any sort of defense and regular evasion techniques to go balls-to-the-wall with these. Easily the fastest weapon, on top of a large amount of multi-hit combos and a special power called 'demon dance' (or 'demonize') that gives you even crazier (and far more powerful) combos, this weapon is all about finding an in and never giving the monster any peace. Using the demon dance with these puppies causes a new spirit gauge to build up, and as long as there is energy stored, all of your un-demonized attacks deal extra damage!

Long Sword
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxfqjlqeIVo

The long sword is exactly what it sounds like. Has the mobility of the Sword and Shield with the range of the Great Sword. Hitting a monster with it causes your spirit gauge to fill, which can be unleashed in a flurry of attacks with increased power. Everybody will hate you if you use this weapon poorly as your spamfest causes everybody else to trip constantly. Spirit Slashes are the name of the game, a giant combo attack that ends with a fancy anime re-sheathing and everything.

Great Sword
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1caSXCQ6bU

Big, slow, and incredibly powerful. A giant sword that you can combo your swings with until your arms fall off, or use as a body-sized shield against oncoming attacks at the cost of your sword's durability. Almost all just giant slabs of metal, the weapon can be used to block (poorly) and there are many mid-step combo attacks that involve just slapping monsters with the width of the blade itself. Not a simple weapon by any means, not recommended for beginners to the game.

Switch Axe
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLuL6M2KKSI

The switch axe is like an amalgamation of the best traits from the stable of melee weaponry. You have great sword-esque attack power, long sword-esque attack speed, a pseudo-wyvern fire function ala gunlance, the side-stepping dodges of a lance, and the rolls of regular weapons in addition to quicker recovery from heavy attacks. This is a very aggressive weapon that requires you to not be afraid of getting in and sticking to your gameplan, and the evasion style of the weapon has grown considerably stronger in this entry of the series.

Lance
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7SiJ4pEmb0

Lance still remains the best class for avoiding damage of any kind. You can hardly move when wielding the weapon, but most anything can be blocked head-on and much better than with a Sword and Shield or Great Sword. On top of this heavily defense-oriented fight style, the weapon features the most technically efficient manner of evasion in the game. Lances also have the advantage of being able to break monster parts that require impact damage or cut off tails and anything else that requires cutting damage. Easily the recommended weapon if you want something simple to start out as a beginner and can branch out from based on what appeals to you.

Gunlance
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYpbXcJPXmw

What if instead of poking monsters with a skimpy little lance, your lance was instead a big cannon on a stick? That's Gunlance. Features many of the same benefits Lances do, but has a distinct playstyle involving a lot of explosions and gunfire. Very flashy, also probably tied for "most annoying weapon" next to Longsword when it comes to debilitating your team members with callous play.

Hammer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlzHKH4fqEI

Hammer is the king of knock outs and heavy impact damage. You move slightly slower with it wielded and don't have much for closing range, but you do crazy amounts of damage and if done right, the monster will spend half of the fight dizzy because you kept hitting it in the face. One of the best changes made in 4U is now that Hunters can attack while in the air, you can use your hammer to launch fellow players straight at the monster for a sick-nasty combo attack fastball special.

Hunting Horn
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZH0kB4FJpU

Hunting Horn is typically considered the main 'support' weapon, allowing you to buff your party with various effects depending on what the horn is. Moderately fast attacks allow you to rack up the damage and allow you to store music notes to play out at any time in the middle of combat to quickly buff yourself and party. Hunting Horn buffs allow you and your party to do many things otherwise not usually possible, such as moving at top speed while wielding it, being able to hit monsters and not bounce off if your sharpness is too low, having roar/earthquake/damage resistance, increased attack, and other widely-applicable effects.

Charge Blade
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1_P6c2q1xU
Do you like the Sword and Shield, but wish it were stronger? Do you like the Switch Axe, but find the sword half kind of boring? Do you still really wish you could blow things up but don't enjoy Gunlance? Well, somehow, this weapon combines all three of those and more into one of the most technically complex pieces of equipment in this series. The weapon is extremely powerful in both raw strength and utility, but requires a lot of practice to master.

Insect Glaive
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPaScxd5qwU
Do you like doing "flips'n'poo poo"? Do you like mounting monsters? Do you like flying through the air constantly? Do you like having on-command buffs to increase your speed, strength, and immunity? This is the weapon for you. A very aggressive and flashy weapon that doesn't do a whole lot on its own but is incredibly effective at what it does do. Also you get a huge pet bug.

Light & Heavy Bowguns
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kGgyfwObSg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaA4BynOTU8
(Note that the videos are from 4U, which means that they are only relevant to the "Guild" style and are also somewhat outdated in regards to the new Generations features, but they're an acceptable overview ATM)

New to Generations is that Bowguns now have built-in bullet types unique to each gun/monster, so there's a lot for you to play with!
Light Bowguns are more evade-oriented, focusing on firing rapidfire volleys of bullets without being hit. The main LBG feature being able to change out the rapid fire function for the ability to reload all of your ammo types at once.
Heavy Bowguns are cannon-esque, with a function that allows the user to kneel down and load in a huge number of chamber shots. Heavy Bowguns can be equipped with shields that allow them to tank hits from certain attacks without needing to try and dodge with the reduced movespeed.

Bow & Arrows
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFPqsBB2kFw

Each bow has its own set of shot proficiencies, which will change the way you have to approach with this weapon (some variants are actually close-range focused) and the ability to fire off arrows by pointing straight at the sky like you're from 300.

The OP says that capturing "will usually result in even more parts obtained", but isn't that actually not the case? Carving gives (usually) 3 parts, and capturing gives 2 parts, with a 69% chance to get 3 instead, but from a different pool?

That 69% chance to get a third item continues rolling multiple times until you "fail" the roll, it generally averages out to more parts in general over time.

4th gen made it weird apparently, in every other gen the way it used to work was that chance for a third item rolled over and over and you would get rewards until the roll "failed", I had edited the OP when someone pointed it out already but I guess there's another line somewhere I missed.

I've always captured religiously in every game and hadn't thought about it much in 4th gen since the games are so much easier in general, never felt the need to see if they had changed the format at all (the only thing that had stood out is they removed the pre-tranq mechanic from 3rd gen which wasn't much of an issue)

What do the HotBlooded and ColdBlooded skills do? The description says they "power you up" in the respective climate but also mention something about drinking a hot/cold drink.

Hot blooded = hot drink is a demon drug
Cold blooded = cold drink is an armor drug

Upgrade the starting hammer as you go, it's fine for all of low rank. As for armor, it's BujaBujaBu:

Bulldrome Cap
Jaggi Mail
Bulldrome Braces
Jaggi Faulds
Bulldrome Greaves
4 Attack gems

Note that this also works for gunner armor (including the bulldrome cap), but requires 6 gems instead of 4 (and thus 2 extra slots).

A did all of LR as a gunner in Tetsucabra armor but it doesn't really matter a whole lot. Lagombi is one of my favorites since it's the first evasion distance+ armor you can get, which was previous really good for HBG. Probably not quite as good now that adept is a thing, but still useful for repositioning.

Is there any reason to play non-adept HBG other than silliness? You don't seem to lose much of anything compared to guild. The arts don't seem all that good so I have zero motivation to go striker. Ariel seems like more of a fun gimmick but maybe it's secretly really strong idk. The adept dodge is just so good on HBG.

Yeah, I believe the way it works is pierce 1 does 3 hits, and more damage per hit than pierce 2 and pierce 3. 2 and 3 do 4 and 5 hits respectively, and the same damage per hit but 3 has significant recoil you have to build around. So until you get the hang of it pierce 1 will probably actually outperform 2 and 3.

edit: FYI for bowgun novices: recoil in monster hunter means the delay between shots, so it's a significant dps loss if you have any. As far as I know it doesn't affect your aim.

Aerial HBG basically turns you into a video game shotgunner. No need to worry about distance, recoil, or reload, just pack normal/pellet/crag and go HAM

My friend says he basically hates using HBG now because Aerial Pellet is stupidly good and really boring once you get over the initial hilarity, sorta like Aerial GS, but it's so potent that using anything else feels like a significant increase in hunt duration.

I don't know how true this is but it's pretty disappointing if it is.

Certain HBGs have really good built-in siege that are great for aerial, but then you go right back to single pellet so it's a bit of a wash

As far as aggressive monsters go, I feel like Yian Garuga is a good example of how not to do it while Nargacuga is a good example of the perfect way to do it.

I actually think the exact opposite. Garuga is every standard monster mechanic from the wyverns simply turned up to 11, while Narga is one of the only monsters that plays by its own rules entirely.

Capcom evidently expected this combination of top MMO devs and their world famous IP to create the next World of Warcraft. I personally think that was never gonna happen, but drat, I would have loved to play a next gen Monster Hunter MMO I could actually understand.

This would also explain why Frontier 1 is suddenly getting a lot of direct attention (they've been doing a massive push for their anniversary event in July-August) despite seemingly having been in decline for the past few years :v:

Dual Swords is better than ever in Gens, IG gets some interesting stuff despite the damage nerf. Just explore the different styles :eng101:

Wow, you're kind of a dick. And a liar; you didn't mention deviants specifically, you just said "thirty times", which I took as an arbitrarily large number to emphasize the normal grindiness of past games if you needed to harvest multiple plates/gems from something for a set.

I've had to be an unwilling participant on multiple occasions as people have to hunt something 20+ times in the main series for their single required plate/gem/whatever, it gets really dumb

"the dromes should do more"

The last monster hunter people to have this idea were the frontier assholes, their idea of "more" is to give all of them running shoulder tackles, mid-air ukemis, and velocidrome vomits loving farcasters at you.

Dromes are mildly annoying in 4th gen because they are considerably more twitchy than the average early boss but their options of giving them more things to do are conceptually limited, which is why the -ggis were created in the first place (dromes are built like twigs and literally do not have the musculature to do anything other than menace you with their face and tail directly), it's a different question entirely as to why they brought them back after 4U other than asset re-use.

Monster Hunter has definitely gotten easier as a game, but it has not gotten any friendlier either.

You will have an infinitely easier time introducing people to any of the genre concepts via God Eater/Toukiden/Freedom Wars/etc than tossing 4U/Gens at them and saying "have fun!"

You left out a huge part -- it's coming to PS4. In November... In Japan... With no announced plans to translate it for the rest of the world. I love Monster Hunter, but I don't think I could get by playing a Japanese copy of the game. Here's to hoping! It's been way too long since a (good) console release.

1. it'll be region-locked via IP
2. it's still never leaving japan
3. "good" is subjective for most people since frontier is married to its ps2 origins, the only thing they can do is pretty up the textures/lighting and bump the poly-count very slightly
