Ask me about being the best dad ever.

Welcome to the world of Super Robot Wars MX - where every problem can be solved with an application of robotic fisticuffs!

What game is this?
Super Robot Wars (SRW) MX was the third game of the series to be released on the Playstation 2 and, while the series has a couple of Original Generation games localized (and a few others received English patches), it is completely understandable if you’ve never heard of it.
SRW games are, essentially, massive crossovers of mecha anime that have been built around a solid strategy game – all the different stories are tied together by an original plot. It's celebrating its 25th anniversary now, in 2016! :toot:

The difficulty in SRW games tends to vary quite a bit. Some games are notoriously difficult (A Portable, the Winkysoft-era games), while others are a massive cakewalk - like this one! Do note that this only applies to the PS2 version as this game has also been released in the PSP, where it made some decent changes to the original plot and gave a 50% HP boost to all enemies. Not the speediest game, that.
Still, I'll be translating the plot of both PS2 and PSP versions, indicating where things differ within the updates themselves.

Why LP this game?
I’m coming into this straight out of LPing W and, then, Z, so I figured I’d keep trudging along by tackling another game I love. Plus, I want give others a thorough display of all that it has.
Lastly, it was either this or Alpha and I’d rather not face that beast after going through a game as huge as Z!

What series can be found here?
The list is quite varied, though it should also be mentioned that quite a few are actually post-plot. That doesn’t mean they won’t be doing anything, mind – far from it!
In essence, this game is a spiritual successor to the infamous SRW Impact; most series' events referenced as having already happened in this world played out in that game. It has a summary available, so you can take a swing at it… if you do, go with my pity (100+ stages!).

Here is what is available here:
  • Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam
  • Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ
  • Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack (only a small tidbit, FYI)
  • Mobile Fighter G Gundam
  • Mazinger Z
  • Great Mazinger
  • UFO Robo Grendizer
  • Getter Robo G
  • Brave Leader Daimos
  • Raideen the Brave
  • Metal Armor Dragonar
  • Machine Robo: Revenge of Cronos
  • Hades Project Zeorymer
  • Martian Successor Nadesico: Prince of Darkness ( :argh: )
  • GEAR Fighter Dendoh
  • Neon Genesis Evangelion
  • RahXephon

How will you play this game?
While this game hasn't had an English release it, like a good bunch of other SRWs, had a story summary done by Mark Neidengard. As I did in W and Z, I will be using that guide as a baseline and expanding upon it with a translation of my own.
This will be a mainly screenshot-based Let’s Play, with videos for attacks and important scenes.

:siren: Finally: the story is half of the fun in these games. As such, while series spoilers are allowed as long as they are tagged, original story spoilers are OFF LIMITS. :siren:

Ask me about being the best dad ever.

Here are our two protagonists: Hugo Medio and Aqua Centrum. Unlike MX’s predecessor, Alpha 2, you don’t get to choose – both are coming with us. Oddly enough, they take the time to point out the characters’ age, even though you can’t change it: Hugo is 20 while Aqua is 23.
It should also be noted that this game skipped custom birthdays for special spirit commands (I’ll get to these soon, if you’re not familiar). Still, Hugo and Aqua’s default lists complement each other very well.

What you DO get to choose, however, is the unit they’ll pilot. Do you want Garmraid, the close-range Super Robot of fangs in its rocket punches and saw blades in its knees (you do), or Cerberus, the long-range Real Robot with a big gun (boo!)?
The story is 95% the same regardless of the unit you choose, though the first two missions change. I’ll be playing through both these first ones and then progressing with Garmraid through the rest of the game – no, you don’t get to object! I love this ridiculous mech!

It’s possible to alter the mech’s name, too, but I’ll stick with the default ones.

And here’s our cool team.

Finally, you may choose one series as your favorite (three in the PSP version) and all units of those series will enjoy a 50% boost to exp, money and PP earned while also getting two extra upgrade bars.
I had a vote when Z was ending and the thread went for G Gundam.

With that done, let’s get to it.

:siren: Do note that if you're on the PSP version of this game, you'll want to check THIS prologue. There are quite a lot of differences. :siren:

Seventy years after the inception of the Space Calendar, a series of events irreparably shook the fate of mankind.
Creatures from a parallel world, the “MU”, suddenly appeared in the skies above Tokyo and engaged in battle with forces of the Earth Federation. This conflict, expected to become a world-encompassing war, reached an abrupt end when the MU erected an unknown sphere around the area, centered on Tokyo's bay, shutting themselves inside.

Right after, a large asteroid struck the South Pole – a catastrophe later dubbed the "Second Impact" – which inflicted immense destruction on mankind and threw the Earth Sphere into chaos.

Mankind weathered the "One Year War" and the "Lizard War", and when peace seemed at hand, the Earth Sphere was engulfed simultaneously in the "Gryps Conflict" and "Devil Gundam Incident". Compounding matters further was an invasion by aliens known as the "Baam", intent on colonizing the Earth.

Meanwhile, the "Mycenae Empire", "Devil Empire" and "Dinosaur Empire" also began their assault. As the Earth Sphere's fate hung in the balance, the efforts of the Federation, the AEUG, Super Robots, the Nadesico B, and the New Shuffle Alliance proved sufficient to repulse all the attackers. A peace accord was struck with the Baam, while the Neo Zeon Army, which sought to act in the aftermath of the Gryps Conflict, was soon defeated.

However, the embers of war were not extinguished...

With the declaration of war by the lunar Giganos Empire, assaults by mysterious foes known as "Angels", numerous UFO appearances and elusive shadows surrounding the Hisago Plan, mankind was about to step closer to its doom...

Prof. Mitall Zapato is talking to a certain mysterious woman, noting that everything seems to be going according to plan. The Medius is ready for launch, but what of its pilot?
The woman says he’s already on standby at the rendezvous point, and that she and AI1 should be able to handle things until they reach him. Furthermore, she asks for confirmation that the Garmraid/Cerberus’s pilots are, indeed, Hugo Medio and Aqua Centrum. And, yes, they are.

She seems a bid uncertain about this choice and Mitall admits that results haven’t been the best so far. That said, he chalks it up not to lack of skill on their part but of the TE Engine’s low output. Or, perhaps, is the mystery woman feeling a wee bit guilty?
No, she says she merely wants “her child” – AI1 – to have suitable opponents. Mitall does sigh that she kind of IS the thing’s foster mother. Regardless, the woman asks why the TE Engine was installed in that machine – if he’d let AI1 handle it, it’d be getting far better results than those two.

Mitall says it’s a small handicap, as the balance of forces between is already askew. To say nothing of the fact that AI1 wouldn’t really be able to make sense of the DFC System. The woman calls that system absurd, depending on sensorial input for control.
Whether she likes it or not, though, Mitall says Aqua's data is vital to AI1's long term success. She disagrees, saying that all AI1 and the Lazmunanium need to display their full might is a perfected TE Engine. Still, Mitall and those two are needed to make that happen, so she’s little choice.

Either way, it’s time for them to get to work. Mitall then confirms her two targets: the Nadesico B and the Nahel Argama. According to the Committee's script, those two ships are bound to be the focal point of a major deterrent force and keeping them tagged will let them gather a whole lot of useful data. The woman concurs and moves to close in to them.
Mitall starts to tell her that he expects good results from her, but reconsiders and says that it's enough if she's able to prove his theory. He isn’t planning on sticking with “them” until the end.

Elsewhere, we find Aqua accosting Hugo. She wants to know why he didn’t do as she said in the test they just performed – he received the data she sent with the drones' counterattack motions, no?
Hugo points out that all drones were shot down in the end and with eight seconds shaved off the time too. What’s the problem? The problem is that he went and acted all on his own and she wants to know why.
And she won’t take no for an answer – she won’t accept any more tests going the way of this one. Their mission is to produce the results Mitall is seeking, Aqua reminds him. Hugo’s a bit miffed when she brings up the professor.

: But, regardless, I want you to stop ignoring my instructions.
: I’m keeping them in mind, you know.
: Oh, keeping them in mind, are you? But, of course, who am I to say anything to Mr. “Ex-Special Forces”. My instructions are clearly not worth much to someone like you.
: I didn’t mean it like that. It’s just…
: Just… what?
: Were that an actual fight, we would have ended up a crater in the ground. That’s what I thought.
: …!
: …You should just focus on managing the TE Engine’s output. I’ll handle the Garmraid/Cerberus in battle.
: Well, excuse me for not having any actual combat experience! But I’ll have you know that, eventually, I’ll be piloting the Medius and—
: Hrm…?!
: What is it?
: N-nothing… Sorry but can you grab me a glass of water?
: Huh? What am I, your waitress?!
: …Please.
: F-fine… Just water, then?
: Yeah…
: (Gch…! And things were going so well with this…)
: Here – your water.
: Sorry for asking…
: Hm? What’s that?
: It’s just… cold medicine.
: Cold, huh? I guess you’re more delicate than I thought.
: …Is that a problem?
: Not really.
: (There… It’s stopped…)
: Well, just make sure you get better quick. I really don’t need you getting me sick, too.
: Says the one walking around in a swimsuit. How can you not catch a cold?
: This is a DFC Suit! Not a swimsuit! A DFC Suit!
: I know that.
: Bah…! I’m not wearing this because I like it, alright?
: Still, you seem rather OK with it.
: Well, sure, I can just jump into the bath with it and…
: B-but that’s not the point!

*BOOM!*

: What?! An explosion?!
: It came from the hangar!
: You think it’s the Garmraid/Cerberus?
: How?! Both of us are here!
: Then it’s the Medius Locus…?!
: That can’t be either! They haven’t even chosen its pilot yet!
: Well, first things first – we need to find the professor right now!

*ALARM!*

: Urgh! The hangar’s hatch was destroyed?!
: What’s going on, Professor?!
: It’s the Medius…! Someone’s stolen it!
: !
: Oh, no…! Who could do this?!
: We’ve no choice – you two must pursue it. If that unit falls into enemy hands, it’ll be a disaster…!
: R-right…! If the Lazmunanium is misused, we could potentially see a repeat of the Devil Gundam Incident from a year ago…!
: (The Devil Gundam…!)
: Understood, professor! We’ll get the Medius back in our hands!
: Please do. The Garmraid/Cerberus will be ready to launch soon and, if need be, you’ve permission to destroy the Medius.
: Y-yes, sir!
: I’m counting on you.
: (Yes, very much so… Hmhmhmhm.)

This prologue here is the same regardless of which robot your choose.

Ask me about being the best dad ever.

Location: Space Science Institute

We find Professors Umon and Saotome (with the ‘stache) discussing "Operation Overlord", a counteroffensive the Federation is putting together against “them”. Seems like they want Saotome’s support in it.
Umon asks if that means they want the Getter Robo to take part but, no, it doesn’t stop at that. The Federation has also requested the cooperation of the Saotome Labs itself, as well as the Photon Lab, Umon’s own institute, the Science Fortress Lab and Mutropolis. Essentially, they want all Super Robot labs to help.

And the request even came from Kouichirou Misumaru, commander of the Federation’s Space Corps. Umon is familiar with the man who, from what Saotome's heard, is thinking of making a new special squadron with these mechs.
This group, formed around the Nahel Argama and Nadesico B, will be tasked with not only fighting the Giganos forces, and executing Operation Overlord, but also dealing with any other matters that may arise in the future.

Umon understands, remembering how it was those ships' combined efforts that paved the way to settling the Baam War and the Devil Gundam Incident. With the battles against the Dinosaur, Mycenae and Devil Empire also finished, Saotome is planning on sending his team as soon as the new Getter finished. Umon agrees to help in any way possible.
Before the call ends, however, Umon warns about the increasing number of UFO sightings – Saotome would do well to be on guard. The professor thanks for the tip and goes, leaving Umon to ponder the upcoming operation and this new squadron. He understands that they must prepare themselves before the enemy acts properly but…

Just then Kouji shows up, it’s been a full year since Umon’s seen him but the boy did actually make a quick stop by Japan half a year ago. He figured Ryouma, Akira and company needed help with their battles against the Dinosaur and Devil Empires.
His Mazinger Z went straight back to the robot museum after all that was done, though. Not a bid problem, as Umon is quite impressed with Kouji’s well-made TFO – a flying saucer he made while studying in the US. Granted, its shape made folks at the nearby Shirakaba farm freak out, thinking it was an actual UFO.

Indeed, Umon knows that Danbei has been quite excited recently over the many UFO sightings around here. In fact, that's why Kouji's here: to hear more about the UFO sightings near Umon’s lab and the Tokyo Jupiter area.
It seems Kouji's interested in trying to make contact with the UFOs; he'd like to believe that peace can be made with the aliens despite the number of people who hate and fear them. It’s his understanding that the Earth of the future will need to build positive relationships with other planets.

Umon warns that that is not an easy thing to do and Kouji can see why: humanity still finds itself marred in internal strife, so how can they build bridges with other races?
Still, we managed to pull it off with the Baam, so the precedent is there and that’s why he won’t throw in the towel.
Umon is glad to hear that and can only hopes that any aliens we meet in the future will share his ideals.

Just then Daisuke comes in with something to discuss with his father. Umon wants to introduce him to Kouji first – one of the warriors who defeated Dr. Hell and the Mycenae. Daisuke brushes the topic aside, making Kouji a bit miffed at being ignored, but this is more important.
Daisuke asks if Umon’s seen the Moon and the answer is a negative: the thing’s only now started to rise over the horizon and… has the moon changed color? It has, to a blazing red tone!

Daisuke warns that this is a sure sign that "they" are coming to attack, and recommends that Umon warn the Federation. Kouji, understandably confused, wants to know who this "they" are, but Daisuke says that he ought to keep out of this. "They" are far worse than the foes Kouji once fought in the Mazinger Z.
Before Kouji has a chance to get in Daisuke’s face, Umon tells his son to back off.

Furthermore, he thinks Kouji must be tired from the trip and suggests he take some time to rest. He accedes, wondering what the heck the deal is with the professor’s son.
Daisuke, meanwhile, is in his own little world: “It’s finally happening… But I… I don’t want to pilot that thing anymore… I can’t stand the thought of doing so!”

Mission 1 (Super Route) – Visitors From Beyond

The following morning, Daisuke heartily greets Hikaru, having gotten up early in the morning to feed the horses.
Kouji is still around, impressed that he’s already up and working and, no, he doesn’t want to continue yesterday’s debate – Daisuke seems busy enough. In that case, Daisuke figures he could put his free hands to use and help scrub the horses. Kouji might but, first, he wants to ask him something… not that Daisuke is willing to answer.
Hikaru tells them not to spoil this fine morning with their bickering, lest he have to try her on for size.

Kouji’s a bit taken aback but agrees to let this go, observing that Hikaru's so headstrong that even Sayaka would likely back down before her.
“Did you say something?” Hikaru bristles; “N-no, not at all,” Kouji stammers in return.
Fine. Hikaru turns to Daisuke and asks if he’s seen her father and, indeed: he’s been on the roof all morning. Hikaru sighs, figuring he’s searching for UFOs again, even after the scene he caused yesterday when he mistook Kouji’s TFO for one.

The human-like creature known as Danbei, Hikaru’s father, waves at her from above and she chides him for wasting time with that instead of lending a hand to Daisuke.
Danbei takes offense, saying he’s the chairman of the “Friends of E.T.s Club” and it’s his very important mission to keep an eye out for the next alien race to arrive. He figures one’s due to come over eventually, following the Baamians.

Kouji very much likes his idea and feels the same way, earning himself much praise from Danbei. He may be a young but he show a lot of promise, as Danbei would hope from one who built his own UFO!
Kouji corrects him, again, by saying it’s a TFO – then again, he likes having Danbei’s approval. That’s good, but daddy-o warns that that’s not a free pass to get any ideas with his girl and that applies to Daisuke, too.
Hikaru blusters at him and yells to get down and help clean the stables. No can do, as Danbei actually spots something flying nearby.

And there are some legit UFOs! Daisuke actually recognizes these and Kouji remembers seeing them in the laboratory's database.
As Danbei flips out, Kouji figures these are some of the ones who’ve been popping up across Japan. Well, now’s his chance to make first contact so he moves to grab his TFO.
Daisuke yells at him not to go, that this foe is far beyond him. Kouji demands to know what he's talking about - does he actually know what those UFOs are?

Daisuke says that that's not important, and tells Kouji that if he values his life he’ll keep away from them.
Kouji wonders if Daisuke’s one of THOSE types, who think all aliens are monstrous invaders. Doesn’t he know the truth about the Baam war? He does, that Olban and Geroiyer caused it as part of their plans. Had they not assassinated the old Baam leader, the war wouldn’t have happened in the first place, Kouji points out.

Daisuke doesn’t disagree but says these aliens are not the Baamians – Kouji shouldn’t expect them be willing to talk. Kouji protests that he has no way of knowing that without trying but Daisuke yells back that he’s the one who doesn’t understand. Don’t try to contact those things, drat it!
Kouji tells him to piss off with that attitude and, besides, he’s never been one to not do stuff simply because people spoke against it.

And off he goes, leaving Daisuke fuming at his idiocy. When Hikaru asks why he tried to stop him, the man stays quiet.
“Yesterday’s moon really was signaling their arrival… the Vegan Empire,” Daisuke thinks. “Those demons have finally set their sights on Earth… do I have no choice but to pilot IT again? No… I’ve found happiness in this beautiful land, in its greenery… I never want to use that thing again…!”

Meanwhile, Kouji’s already in the air and Danbei begs him to make a good first impression – that’s of utmost importance! Sounds good, so he moves in closer and hails the UFOs, introducing himself and asking for a response.
They have apparently heard him, but make no reply other than moving closer. Daisuke yells at Kouji to run, but not before the aliens start blasting the TFO.

He gets blown far away but barely manages to regain control before crash landing. Still, Kouji’s not happy that these aliens are actually invaders.
Daisuke feels his hand being forced and he is not happy, cursing fate for stuffing him back into the cockpit. When Hikaru asks why he’s looking so angry, he takes a deep breath and tells her to get Danbei and run. And without another word, he heads out elsewhere.

Kouji’s trying to figure out what to do, when Umon gets in touch and tells him to retreat.
He’s not one to turn tail and run, though, but Umon protests that his TFO isn’t a combat unit – he can’t win this. Kouji counters by saying he’s dealt with worse situations and he can do it again.

Over by the command UFO, Bracky isn’t impressed with the Earthling’s flying saucer.
More important is destroying the building that was gathering information about his forces. That will truly signal the start of their invasion of this planet.

Mission Objective: Destroy all enemy units
Mission Failure: Any allied unit destroyed
And here we are. Unlike Alpha 2, again, this game does not have Skill Points, so you’re almost always free to take things at your leisure.
Regardless, this mission is pretty easy as the Vegan UFOs are made of papier mâché and prayer.

Let’s take a look quick look at Kouji and his toy:

TFO (Kouji Kabuto)
Pilot Skills:
  • Prevail L1 – accuracy, evasion, armor and critical rate get boosted as you lose HP. Effect increases with skill level
  • Sword Cut L1 – can only be used by units with a sword. Fixed chance to negate incoming melee or missile attacks. Also increases with skill level
  • Assisted Attack – more on this when we can use it.
  • Support Defense L1 – when adjacent to a unit being attacked by an enemy, the pilot can jump in front and take the attack instead (reduced damage). The skill level dictates how often you can activate this per enemy turn and the damage mitigation.
Spirit Commands
  • Strike (20) – hit rate becomes 100% for the next turn
  • Guts (30) – fully heals HP
Mech Features
  • Repair module – enables the use of the repair command, allowing this unit to spend its turn to heal some of an adjacent unit’s HP
  • Resupply module – same as repair, only restores EN and Ammo
Kouji’s Voice Actor: Hiroya Ishimaru (other known works: Agrippa in Turn A, Rodimus Prime in Transformers, Launchpad in Ducktales (!) and many others)

Kouji’s the prototypical Super Robot pilot: very bulky, prefers physical attacks and isn’t too accurate or dodgy. His morale growth is good (which’ll help later), his spirit command list suits him perfectly and he naturally has Assisted Attack, which is always nice in this game.
Oh, and that “can’t dodge” bit doesn’t matter because he’s using the big cheat code called TFO. While it was dodgy enough in Z, it is nigh untouchable in this game:
  • SS size (size difference means the smaller unit deals less damage but has an easier time dodging and hitting – the opposite is also true. SS is the smallest size available, so pretty much everything is bigger.)
  • Natural S ranks in both Air and Space (移動 ranks mean how well you can traverse a terrain, 地形 means how well the unit handles in a terrain – better ranks here, the better it dodges and hits)
  • And, to top it off, 120 mobility (運動性 – a big variable in the dodge formula. Get more of this to get better dodge numbers) right off the box.
Not even Real Robots can compete with this thing! Of course, it’s a bit weak but you’ll find it to be an excellent support unit for pretty much all the game.

With all that done, Kouji moves forward but he’s too far away to attack anything.

Enemy Phase!

And the UFOs just move forward, Bracky hanging back.

Player Phase!

: Wait, are those guys going after the lab?!

: Those guys got some weapons like the Mechabeasts and Battle Beasts too?!
: Hear me, you fiends! The Grendizer is reborn and it will keep this beautiful green world off your evil claws!
: drat it all… Him being here wasn’t in the plan…! I have to return and report this to Commander Gandal! Deal with him!

: Hey! That guy ran away?!
: Forget him, Kouji! Focus on the problem at hand!
: Y-yeah, you got it!

We’ll look at Duke in a second. First off, Kouji moves in close and aims his sole attack at the only enemy in range.
FYI: this Minifoo has a whopping 5% chance to connect against Kouji, one of the most easily hit pilots in the game.

: I’m not cutting you any more slack if you’re looking for a fight! You better not underestimate Kouji Kabuto and his TFO!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpSPfKsP8o8
Sadly, the Vegan mooks don’t have the honor of being voiced by Hiyama in this game.

But, hey, look at that: the Minifoo left a small box after dying. Unlike most SRWs, you don’t automatically get items from downed enemies; instead, it stays on the ground for anyone to pick. That means enemies, too, and if you let them retreat with it, you get jack.
If the mission ends, however, you pick up everything’s that is still on the ground so don’t worry too much unless you think a mook might grab it. The AI doesn’t worry about it, so that’ll only happen if they move into the right position when attacking someone.

Grendizer/Spazer (Duke Fleed)
Pilot Skills:
  • Prevail L1
  • Sword Cut L1
  • Support Defense L1
  • Leadership – A Support Attack triggers before the enemy has a chance to counterattack, with 100% hit and critical rate.
Spirit Commands:
  • Mercy (5) – if this unit has a high Skill stat than an enemy it would destroy, instead it survives with 10 HP
  • Strike (20)
Duke’s Voice Actor: Kouichi Yamadera (other known works: Gyunei in CCA, Spike in Cowboy Bebop, Tomoru in Orgun and so much more)

He’s like Kouji, only even worse at dodging but slightly better at everything else. There’s no Dizer Power to give him a free damage boost in here but the Grendizer still hits like a truck and the Leadership skill will really help squeeze out an extra bit of free damage. Duke’s naturally good Skill stat makes him extra crit-y, too.
The Spazer can fly and moves one space farther, is a bit weaker but has cheaper moves. The actual robot form is the opposite: stronger, land-bound and with EN-heavier attacks.
You can switch forms either by pressing Triangle over the unit or by selecting the 変形 option in the unit menu.

Case in point, Duke needed that one extra mobility to get in range for the other Minifoo.

: I will not let you do to this beautiful Earth what you did to Planet Fleed!

No problems here.

One more turn waiting around, as the other UFOs trudge their way towards us.

Kouji picks up the item from the ground (I wasn’t sure we’d get it at the end), so Duke sets onward and slaps one of the two remaining Minifoos into oblivion.

Enemy Phase!

The last Minifoo makes the objectively bad call of attacking the TFO and dies. Meanwhile, the Saucerbeast has made it to Duke.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BG3x5O6e2iA
Good man.

Player Phase!

And it’s dead!

: Looks like that’s the last of them. Are you alright, Kouji?
: That voice, those eyes… are you—!
: Watch out, you two! Another flying object is approaching!
: More UFOs?!

Uh, oh…

: What the hell is that robot…?!
: (At least it doesn’t seem to be of the Vegan Empire…)
: This is where I was detecting ongoing combat, Major.
: What unit is that? It looks like a Super Robot but…

*Looks at Grendizer*

: There’s no match in our database. That said, I’m detecting an unknown energy signature coming from it.
: Hmph… Is that why we came here rather than keep going to the Saotome Labs?
: Yes. Moreover, I believe that if we can make them get in contact with the Space Science Institute staff, we can consider the first objective to be met.
: How do you figure?
: The institute shares a very deep connection with all the other Super Robot bases. That connection will eventually lead them to the Nahel Argama and Nadesico B.
: Fine… Then how about we take the time to teach the Medius and AI1 the terror of live combat?
: “Terror”?
: Do you not think it can be taught that?
: This child has no need for such things as emotions, is what I think.
: Heh… Whatever you say. Either way, are they in pursuit?
: Yes. They should arrive any time now.

: There you are, Medius Locus!
: You hand that unit back right now!
: …
: Fair warning, we’ve also been given permission to destroy it! So if you’re thinking of using it as a shield, think again!
: (Hmhmhm… Looks like he’s recovered.)
: They’re not answering. What do we do, Hugo?
: …Turn the weapons’ safeties off.
: Without contacting that nearby lab first…?
: Yeah. Remember, our unit’s highly classified.
: Sure but I don’t think that means much after we started flying around in pursuit of the Medius…
: Whatever. Just focus on managing our output.
: The Garmraid won’t be beating the Medius in a race – we need to bring it down here and now.
: I-I know that!
: They’re engaging. Are we ready?
: Yes. Initiating data collection… Fight as you will, Major.
: Drop that title. I’m not a soldier anymore.
: …Very well.
: Adjusting the TE Engine’s output…! Urk, it’s not working! It won’t leave the yellow! And I also need to project the Medius’ motions and—!
: Again, let me handle the fighting – just worry about the output.
: No way! I’ve a job to do and I’ll be doing it right!

MX Version:

: (This is her first actual battle… It’s only natural for her to be nervous…)

MXP Version:

: (This is our second time fighting the Medius but it's her first actual battle... It's only natural that she can't concentrate on the DFC...)

Back to common ground:

: Hmm, their control of the TE Engine’s output does not seem to be going too well.
: Both the unit and its pilots are faulty, I see. (MXP Version: No surprise there. The main pilot's damaged goods and the sub-pilot's a novice.)
: Indeed.
: (Aqua Centrum… Is this, really, all you amount to?)
: Uurgh! What’s going on here?! This never happened in the simulator!
: Just leave it in the yellow – it’s fine! I’m going in, Aqua!
: Huh?! H-hold on a minute!
: Come, then. You’ll all be fodder to the Medius…!

Garmraid (Hugo Medio/Aqua Centrum)
Pilot Skills (Hugo):
  • Fortune – Money earned +20%
  • Support Attack L1 – Same as Defense, only if a unit attacks adjacent to one with this skill, he can call it in for an extra attack in battle
  • Support Defense L1
Pilot Skills (Aqua):
  • Gunfight L1 – Increases damage done by ranged attacks with each level. At levels 4 and 7, increases ranged attacks range by 1
  • Shield Defense L1 – Requires the unit have a shield. Will block an incoming attack and mitigate damage in proportion to the skill level - always triggers but only if you've a non-0 Shield charge (more on this later).
  • Support Defense L1
Spirit Commands (Hugo):
  • Accelerate (5) – Increases movement range by 2 for a turn
  • Strike (15)
Spirit Commands (Aqua):
  • Focus (10) – grants a 30% boost to your chances to hit and evade for a turn
  • Lucky (40) – money earned from the next battle is doubled
  • Alert (10) – guaranteed to dodge the next attack.
Hugo’s Voice Actor: Hiroki Takahashi (other known works: Ryu in Street Fighter, Arthur in SEED Destiny, Jounouchi (Joey in the west) in the Yu-Gi-Oh and many others)
Aqua’s Voice Actress: Yuri Shiratori (other known works: Rena in Ace Combat 3 Electrosphere, Mokona in Rayearth, Yukina in Yu Yu Hakusho and many others)

The Garmraid’s a very standard Super Robot: bulky and with absolute poo poo for range. It’s farthest-reaching attack is range 4, which is even worse than the Gunleon! Still, that’s why Hugo has that dirt cheap accelerate and Aqua’s spirit commands add a nice bit of utility and survivability.
It should be noted that Hugo’s a bit of an odd pilot: his defense stat is pretty low when compared to the likes of Duke or Kouji but his evasion is good. That’d indicate the Cerberus would be a better fit… until you look at his ranged stat and realize it is absolute garbage.
The Garmraid will be getting a lot more bulkier with upgrades but, until then, don’t expect it to shrug hits as well as the Grendizer.

Now, I'm making a small tangent here because MX has these weird melee-ranged attacks (Hugo's Bloody Ray and Fang Knuckle, for instance) and they often confuse people. These are identified by having both the image of a fist and a crosshair next to an attack and what it boils down to is how the game will calculate your damage and your attack's accuracy.

It works like this:

The "melee" half of the attack means it is affected by your stats and skills as a purely based weapon would. Meaning your Melee stat and skills like Infight are the ONLY things that'll up the damage.

What the "range" half of it affects is that it makes your attack count as a ranged attack in the accuracy calculation. A melee attack considers the target's terrain when calculating hit% (that is, if you're grounded and attack an aerial enemy, it'll consider Air in the formula). A ranged attack, however, considers the attacker's own terrain rating in the formula.

So, in essence, if your unit is, say, crap in the air and tries to melee a flying enemy, it'll take a hit in accuracy. However, a melee-ranged attack from the ground will hit a flying enemy with the accuracy as if it were grounded.

Also, if you target an empty space and press X, you can check if it has any special features going on. This tile’s a forest which gives any units sitting within a +20 boost to defense and evasion.
So, with that in mind, we’ll have the Garmraid land.

And just to be extra safe, we’ll have Aqua cast Alert. Pop the unit menu, look for the 精神 option, choose your pilot if need be and cast. You can cast as many spirit commands as you want, so long as you have enough spirit points (SP) to cover the cost.

Now we can move in.

: Th-there! I’ve got the estimates on its movements!
: Just shut up before you bite out your tongue, Aqua!
: Let’s begin. Show me what the Garmraid can do!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhfqM5oQga0
We put fangs in our rocket punches because why not!

: ! That move…!
: Heh… Not bad at all.
: At the very least they seem to be strong enough to face the Medius.
: Hm. There wouldn’t be any point to this if they weren’t.
: It can’t be…!
: What is it, Hugo?
: …Nothing. Don’t worry about it!

Enemy Phase!

And here comes the Medius again – good. Let’s me show off the Garmraid’s chainsaw knees! :black101:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD3fxgIkCYk
When you bring the Medius below 80%, the plot kicks in.

: Hm? AI1’s reacting against this…?
: Hah…hahahaha!
: What’s so funny?
: I think it just got its first taste of the terror of live combat, no?
: That is not possible.
: Well, it doesn’t matter. The mission is complete – we’re retreating.
: Yes…

: drat it…! What kind of speed is that…?!
: That’s to be expected… The Medius is not equipped with a TE Engine, so its energy output is stable.
: No point in discussing that now. We’re going after it.

*Beep!*

: Huh? Hold on, Hugo! We’ve received new orders!
: I don’t even need to see them – it’s to go after the thing ASAP, right?
: Actually… no, it’s not.
: No? What are you talking about?
: The new orders are to… join with the Japanese Super Robot and rendezvous with the Space Corps' battleship Nahel Argama, all the while continuing our pursuit of the Medius Locus… What is all this…?
: …
: They’re essentially telling us to let the Medius go…!
: …Aqua, get in touch with that lab. If that order’s legit, then they must also be receiving it.
: O-OK...

Back in said lab, Daisuke realizes that he couldn’t fool Kouji and tells him that he is, indeed, the pilot of the Grendizer.
Umon confides that Daisuke isn't his real son. Rather, he's the prince of Planet Fleed, in the Vega Nebula – Duke Fleed. His world was an advanced one of science, and peace until the dreadful King Vega decided to conquer the whole nebula. Innocents were slaughtered, the green land was consumed in flame and, within the burning palace, Duke’s parents and sister perished.
As for the Grendizer, it is the unit his father built, embodying the total scientific knowledge of their world, as a defender of universal peace.

However, the mech’s power caught the eye of King Vega – he wants to use it to fuel his galactic conquest. He couldn’t let it fall into the guy’s hands, so he left Planet Fleed with it and, after a long voyage, found Earth.
It was by mere chance that Umon found Duke, half dead, shortly after he had crash-landed in the mountains of Japan. Umon felt fate’s hand at work in that encounter, like there was a connection between them. Thus began the fated father-son thing, a whole two years ago.

Regardless, Umon wants Kouji to keep this a secret lest further misunderstandings arise if others find out about Daisuke’s origins. He will but, of course, they’ve bigger problems to worry about : King Vega never lets his prey escape and that prey is now Earth. It is certain he’ll be sending his men to attack this beautiful world again.
Indeed, and from what info Umon’s receiving, it appears the Saotome Lab was also attacked by Vegan troops about the same time we were. Unfortunately, details are sketchy so he doesn’t know about the Getter Team – the lab itself is safe, at least, and Kouji’s certain they’re all fine.
Regardless, Daisuke sees this isn’t just our problem and Umon says it is precisely to deal with the various problems like this that the Federation wants to make that new special squadron.

Umon tells them that it will be an independent squad with the Nahel Argama as one of its flagships; and said ship which should be descending in Japan soon.
Kouji has heard of it, the mothership of the Gundam team that played a great part in bringing an end to the Neo Zeon conflict. Only difference is, this time, they’re bringing in more stuff than just Gundams aboard.
Daisuke asks if they’ll need to join the Federation Army if they want to help with that but, no, it was arranged for them to be just civilian supporters. Sounds good to Kouji, if it’ll help us keep Earth from falling to the Vegan Empire – not that they can afford to ignore the Giganos and Tokyo Jupiter, either.

Umon apologizes for leading Kouji back into the battlefield but, really, he doesn’t care as he was already planning on doing so when he came back to Japan. Daisuke himself is quiet, pondering rumors that he heard while traveling in space: the Vegans may not be the only alien group with an interest in conquering Earth.
When Kouji pokes him, Daisuke concedes that he can’t well run from his fate now that she’s chosen to pilot the Grendizer again. And this planet is his second home, so he’ll also tag along. The two of them will be heading to the Saotome Labs and they won’t do so alone.

He calls in Hugo and Aqua, who introduce themselves to the others. Kouji doesn’t even need to introduce himself, as Aqua is well aware of his exploits with the Mazinger from his many appearances in the news.
Hugo says that at the very least, Kouji's quite famous among those who work in developing Super Robot and related technology. As the guy gets bashful, Umon asks if they’re willing to share details of their assignment.

Sure, as Aqua notes that their superiors have given them permission for this. So, Aqua tells him about their Garmraid: a humanoid weapon powered by Terminus Energy, developed by the Federation’s Tsentr Project. It’s popularly referred to as a TE Absorber.
And what about that Terminus Energy? It’s a previously theoretical form of energy discovered by Prof. Mitall Zapato that exist outside the four fundamental interactions in nature (gravitation, electromagnetism, strong nuclear and weak nuclear).

Kouji's heard of this during his studies in the US, but understands it to be very hard to collect or control. It is said this energy is present everywhere, so does that mean the Garmraid can run indefinitely if it’s using it?
No, Aqua says that the TE Engine is still undergoing adjustments and its output is, thus, unstable. So, various auxiliary electric power sources had to be used as well and Aqua has to always be aboard to keep the engine under control.

Kouji wonders if that has something to do with her swimsuit-like uniform and she weakly confirms. It's part of the "Direct Feeling Control" system, which requires her to leave some skin exposed.
Daisuke asks about the black unit they were chasing and Hugo tells of the Medius Locus, another prototype that was being developed in tandem with the Garmraid. It doesn’t have a TE Engine but, in its place, the thing has had its frame and armor built out of Lazmunanium. A new element also discovered by Mitall: succinctly, it is a metal with self-healing properties.

Umon takes a potentially endless energy source and pairs it with a self-healing element and asks if the ultimate goal of the Tsentre Project is to develop weapons that can function and last forever, without any maintenance. Aqua confirms but, again, the Garmraid and Medius are merely prototypes – they’re still far away from a success. And one of said prototypes was now stolen.
Aqua reiterates that the Medius' Lazmunanium can't be allowed to be misused, lest they risk a repeat, albeit in smaller scale, of what happened with the Devil Gundam. Kouji remembers how said Gundam jacked the Neo Japan Colony a year ago.

Umon is worried now and asks if the Lazmunanium has the same properties as DG Cells. Thankfully, no, as it was carefully developed so that it lacked those self-evolving and self-replicating properties. Still, if someone were to modify it…
Which is why they need to get the Medius back ASAP and, with that in mind, Kouji wonders why they're not off in hot pursuit right now. Hugo tells of their orders to accompany them to the Nahel Argama and just to keep an eye out for the missing bot. There’s obviously more going on but they don’t know anything for certain now.

Well, Daisuke and co have no objections to them coming along. First order of business is getting to the Saotome Labs and joining up with the Getter Team. From there, they’ll head to the ship.
With that, Hugo is quick to pull Aqua back to the bot and, with an apology to the others, she says they’ll be ready to depart soon. Daisuke bids farewell to his father, asking him to be careful, and he and Kouji move off.

: Hey, hold on! Why are you in such a hurry for?!
: …Those orders really are just too weird.
: Huh?
: Why do we need to join with the Nahel Argama? If we do that, it’ll only increase our chances of getting pulled into other battles.
: And there is absolutely no guarantee that the Medius will cross our path.
: Hm-hmm.
: And, on top of that, the ease with which our assignment was changed bothers me. It’s pretty clear that there’s stuff going on behind the scenes.
: Yeah. To say nothing of the fact of how easily the Medius was stolen.
: I don’t suppose we’d be wrong to assume that it’s someone within the Tsentr Project behind all this.
: You think it’s Professor Mitall?
: Maybe but, then, I don’t know why only the Medius Locus was stolen. If his plan was to sell it to another organization, he’d have taken the Garmraid as well.
: True… Anyone who wants to reap the fruits of the Tsentr Project would need both the TE Engine and Lazmunanium.
: (Or does the Medius actually have functions we don’t know about?)
: (…The moves the Medius did today… I remember them well.)
: (But it can’t be… He couldn’t be back…)

Location: Skull Moon Base

Over by the Vegan’s HQ, Bracky’s just told Gandal (purple guy) the news about Duke Fleed. Furthermore, the commander isn’t too happy with his underling for turning tail and run at the sight of him.
Bracky argues that it was to bring this piece of information to him as quickly as he could but that doesn’t stop another officer, Balendos, from sneering at what a wimp he is.

Balendos himself has just returned from his mission on earth, where he went to make mincemeat out of some red robot – unlike some other incompetent folks (Bracky seethes). With that in mind, Gandal gives him the job of eliminating the Grendizer.
Bracky protests that it was his job but Balendos tells him to pipe down and help Gandal get the Skull Moon Base set up. Meanwhile, he’ll go and claim Duke Fleed’s head.
Good, Gandal is eager to behold the might of the captain of King Vega’s Royal Guards.

…It’s not the same without Butcher.

Anyway, I've got no idea what's going on, same as always. Which plots are starting, and which ones are already finished? SRW isn't terribly kind to newbies. At least we get to see Grendizer in all its glory!

...and Prince of Darkness. Again. I really wish the other two planned movies had at least gotten a manga or LN release, like Full Metal Panic did, so SRW could actually finish the drat plot.

Truth be told, PoD was the only thing pushing me not to LP this next because I really, really don't like it.

In this world, they've already finished:

  • Mazinger, Great Mazinger
  • Zeta, ZZ, G Gundam
  • Daimos, Raideen

Everyone else has plot but the ones above get new stories of their own in tandem with them.

The original Getter has played out but we've Getter G in here, so...

This is probably the most "holy poo poo" crawl in SRW. In most sequel games, they just gloss over the overall plot of the previous game and it doesn't seem as bad, but since this technically isn't one, they lay it all on the table.

The best thing is that all these calamities pretty much happened in a nonstop stream. One has to wonder how Earth and the colonies are still in one piece, do-gooders or not.

Following the prologue we saw last update, we get to the Cerberus-route exclusive part.

Location: Near Earth

Aboard the Nahel Argama, Torres (blonde guy) reports to Bright that the ship has a steady course towards its entry point in Earth’s Orbit. The captain himself orders all hands to stay ready to deploy at a moment’s notice.
Elle asks if we must, as aren’t the folks we’re pursuing also going to descend into Earth? They are. Wouldn’t it be best to leave this for later, then? Beecha sees it another way, saying the enemy is in as much of a rush as we are; an attack now, on the verge of reentry, will suck for everyone but if we take the initiative, it’ll suck more for them.

That’s his insight as the ship’s former captain. Mind, he’s pretty relieved with being free of the responsibilities of the station – he figures Torres and co. feel the same, too.
True, Torres sighs that he had no idea what was going to happen while the kid had the helm… but, somehow, he got them all out of that mess alive. He and Saegusa figure they ought to thank him but Beecha blushes and says it was nothing. If anything, Bright sees that his decision to entrust the Nahel Argama to him wasn’t mistaken.

Mondo ponders how long Bright’s been captaining ships and while he did take a sabbatical to assist the post-war negotiations with the Baamians, Bright very much prefers to be in the field than dealing with VIPs.
Roux asks, on that subject, how things are going in Little Baam. The colony’s been doing pretty well, with the new peaceful government centered around a certain Erika. However, with the chaotic state of things on Earth, they decided to warp from the Moon to Mars until things calm down.
Mondo asks if they used a Boson Jump to move the place there but Torres says something as big as Little Baam could never go through a Tulip. Besides, the place is equipped with its own warp drive – that explains to Mondo how it just popped by the Moon one day.

Leina (the kid) steps into the bridge, bringing in Puru and Puru Two’s (”Pleplepleple” sounds like someone swallowed a fly) medical reports to Bright.
Everything looks good, which means they don’t need to transfer them to the hospital in La Vie en Rose. Bright is glad to hear that; they lost so much during the war but at the very least managed to save those children. But what about Judau?
Leina says he was very happy to hear about the Purus but that didn’t last long – he’s still bummed out over how things ended with Haman Karn.

Beecha grumbles of how the Federation and Neo Zeon had entered a cease-fire prior to Little Baam’s liberation and everything was set for a happy ending. But then Haman and Glemy went and attacked, forcing their hand.
And, THEN, the Giganos went and declared war. They really couldn’t make it through all this without Judau, that’s for sure. Elle, herself, doesn’t care for how hard the Federation’s bigwigs work their people… then again, what else is new?

Roux isn’t happy with their new mission either: get to Earth and escort some folks transporting some new weapons. They’re pretty much being flung headfirst into the Giganos conflict with this.
Bright tells her that it would have happened sooner or later, though, and it’s not like the rest of the Federation’s soldiers weren’t already taking part in the hostilities. It’s bad for everyone out there, not just them.
Beecha asks if the Nadesico couldn’t be helping with this but Bright says they’ve a special mission of their own, outside the Earth Sphere. Still, it’s likely they’ll also get dragged into the Giganos conflict later on.

Roux does remember hearing about the odd death of the Nadesico’s previous captain. Torres and Saegusa say that, at one point, it was rumored that the Titans were behind that – the ship really stepped on their toes during the Lizard War.
But, then, said Titans went under during the Gryps Conflict, leaving that death looking like just a terrible accident.

Getting the conversation back on track, Mondo has to wonder when the Giganos Empire managed to get enough troops for this sort of campaign. Bright tells of how their ancestors were lunar colonists, so they had plenty of metalworking plants built around the place.
The Giganos went and started mass-producing their Metal Armors at the height of the Baam and Neo Zeon conflicts. You see, they’d settled an alliance with the Spacenoids prior to declaring themselves independent and were helping their cause; hell, Bright heard that, when Neo Zeon attacked Earth several months ago, they even sent Metal Armors to help.

But the main problem was something else they used: the Mass Driver. It can cause equivalent destruction to a Colony Drop but with a LOT less preparation needed. They fired it during the conflict but never again since; still, the threat of it is keeping the Federation – and the world – very much on edge.
And then there’s the matter of the Giganos’ leader, Marshal Guiltorre. He’s often criticized the Federation’s Earth-supremacist doctrine as harmful to the environment.

In fact, he subscribes to the Er-ism philosophy in that Earth is a sacred land that should be protected and freed of the presence of man. All in all, this could well grow to the size of the Lizard War and Gryps Conflict.
The exposition is interrupted when Torres detects enemies right ahead – looks like we caught up to them. Bright orders all Mobile Suits deployed.

Mission 1 (Real Route) – Pursuers

Torres confirms that we’re dealing with Metal Armors. As everyone launches, Beecha wants the enemy dealt with quick, lest the Nahel Argama’s own atmospheric entry get screwed up. Judau has also deployed, though Iino can see he’s not too happy.
The kid tells them not to worry, though: if a war’s breaking out again, then he’ll fight to bring it to an end in earnest. He knows this is what he has to do, for Leina and his friends, so he’ll hang in there.
Beecha is glad to see him pulling himself back together.

The Purus have also deployed (Puru Two is the one in red) and, when Judau asks, they say they’re fine with taking to the field – it’s their turn to help him and, in Puru Two’s case, to atone for what she’s done.
The Giganos troops ahead have already tagged them and the leader, Maillot, recognizes the Gundam team as the ones who brought down Haman Karn – he didn’t expect them to be their pursuers. Looks like the Federation is finally bringing out the big guns.
Dan has pinged the Nahel Argama’s course and posits we’re likely trying to rendezvous with the fleet transporting the “D Weapons” – same destination as them, Maillot sees. Werner and Karl figures getting rid of the Gundams now will make things a lot simpler, including recovering the D Weapons.

Maillot will be satisfied with just incapacitating us, as his squad’s priority right now is moving down to Earth.
With that in mind, Dan and Werner suggest he go on ahead in pursuit of the D Weapons while they handle this. Maillot criticizes their overconfidence, remembering the disgrace it begat them before.
His men understand which is why they want a chance to regain their honor. Maillot sighs and agrees to let them do as they please but does warn them not to go crazy – they’re merely stalling the enemy.

With that, he leaves things in their hands. Mondo doesn’t get why the obvious leader pulled off but Beecha tells him to focus on breaking past the enemy line. Meanwhile, Werner is calling his comrades forward, telling them to show everyone the might of the Practice Squad!

Mission Objective: Destroy all enemies
Mission Failure: The Nahel Argama is destroyed

Easy, easy. Our units outgun the Giganos but do take care since Judau’s friends aren’t the dodgiest and the Practice Squad’ll get good numbers going – the damage piles up quick on these flimsy MSs.

Now take a seat, as we do the usual sorting with our new folks. We'll leave the Practice Squad for later.

ZZ Gundam/G-Fortress (Judau Ashta)
Pilot Skills:
  • Newtype L2 – Provides a bonus to evasion and accuracy, increasing with the skill level. At level 7, also increases range of Funnel-type weapons
  • Sword Cut L3
  • Shield Defense L3
  • Assisted Attack L1
Spirit Commands:
  • Focus (10)
  • Invincible (10) – the next attack that connects will have its damage reduced to 10.
Mech Features:
  • Beam Coat – Incoming beam damage reduced by 700
Judau’s Voice Actor: Kazuki Yao (other known works: Shinobu in Dancouga, our good friend Moroha in Aquarion, Dist in Tales of Abyss and a whole bunch of others.)

Judau’s pretty dang good, being a Gundam protagonist and all. Most of his stats are a wee bit better than Hugo’s, actually. The ZZ is decently dodgy in MS mode but that’s further boosted by the kid’s stronger-than-most Newtype and surprisingly high leveled skills – natural Assisted Attack is always good, too.
What the ZZ excels at, however, is offense. Its Hyper Beam Saber provides a good weapon on approach and, if anyone tries sniping, the head-mounted High Mega Cannon will blast them to kingdom come. And, in a pinch, the attack also comes in a MAPW version; its AoE isn’t the greatest but it can help carve a path through a wall of mooks in front. Mind, both versions of this attack are VERY expensive.

That’s why they actually saw fit to give a cheaper, stronger combined attack with the Zeta: Double Mega Launcher... which we can't use yet!

The G-Fortress serves the same purpose as the Spazer: it gets Judau airborne and boosts his range. Once you’re in position, however, you’ll probably want to switch to the actual ZZ.

Hyaku Shiki (Beecha Oleg)
Pilot Skills:
  • Newtype L1
  • Support Attack L1
  • Support Defense L1
Spirit Commands:
  • Accelerate (5)
  • Bless (25)
Beecha’s Voice Actor: Shingo Hiromori (other know works: Astonaige in many Gundams, Tasuku in Dairugger and a few others.)

Beecha sucks as a pilot and the Hyaku Shiki is weak as all hell in this game. Don’t use them. Its only saving grace is the MAPW Mega Bazooka Launcher and, in my opinion, that is hardly enough since MAPWs are plentiful in this game.
If you insist, be ready to invest a lot of money and time.

Zeta Gundam/Waverider (Roux Louka)
Pilot Skills:
  • Newtype L1
  • Sword Cut L2
  • Support Attack L1
Spirit Commands:
  • Focus (15)
  • Iron Wall (20) – all damage reduced to ¼ for the next turn
Roux’ Voice Actress: Naoko Matsui (other known works: Pai Thunder in Dangaioh, Ines in Nadesico, The eyebrows Dorothy in Gundam Wing and many others)

Back to good units and pilots. Iron Wall is an odd choice for a Real Robot pilot but I’ve seen worse. More importantly, she picked up Focus which already puts her way above Beecha (plus, her stats aren’t garbage). She’s better suited for ranged attacks, mind, so the Zeta’s more melee-oriented aspect won’t click too well with her but she can make do with the Hyper Mega Launcher. Again, the combined attack with the ZZ gives it a lot more stopping power once the pilot’s morale gets going.

Super Gundam (Elle Vianno)
Pilot Skills:
  • Newtype L1
  • Support Attack L1
  • Support Defense L1
Spirit Commands:
  • Gain (25) – the selected unit will earn double exp from the next battle
  • Focus (20)
Elle’s Voice Actress: Eriko Hara (other known works: Sayla the Knight in SD Gundam, Sharon in Vifam, Pellegri in Xenosaga and some others)

She’s worse than Beecha (but at least she knows Focus, albeit an expensive one). Sorry, no. Gain is nice right now but as soon as we find other folks that can cast it, she’s better off benched.
The Super Gundam’s not bad but it’s not great, either. Its Long Rifle is P, hilariously, so at least that means she’ll be safely out of the fray.

Elpeo Puru (Qubeley Mk. II)
Pilot Skills:
  • Newtype L1
  • Sword Cut L1
  • Support Defense L1
Spirit Commands
  • Focus (15)
  • Alert (10)

Puru Two (Qubeley Mk. II)
Pilot Skills:
  • Cyber Newtype L1 (same effect as regular Newtype)
  • Sword Cut L1
  • Support Attack L1
Spirit Commands
  • Focus (15)
  • Accelerate (5)
Puru and Puru Two’s Voice Actress: Chieko Honda (other known works: Amu in L-Gaim, Miku in Zeorymer, Natasha in Takkaman Blade II and many others)

Puru and Puru Two are, respectively, the third and second best pilots in the ZZ crew – they lose only to Judau. Puru Two is slightly better and has more offense-oriented spirits while Puru seems more suited for a support role. Regardless, they can both handle the front lines nicely.
The Qubeleys are also fine machines and their mobility is equal to the ZZ, so they’ll be dodging reliably. As you’d expect, their range is also excellent with their Funnels. Even better, they get something to push the Qubeley Mk. IIs into a higher tier than usual: Twin Funnels, a combined attack!

We can’t use it yet since it requires Newtype L4 on both pilots but soon enough. To keep it in perspective, the Twin Funnels are stronger than all of Judau’s attacks, save for the Double Mega Launcher (and even that is only a bit better).
If you’re a Puru fan, you’re more than capable of bringing them to the endgame without gimping yourself a whole bunch.

Mega Rider (Mondo Agake)
Pilot Skills:
  • Newtype L1
  • Shield Defense L1
  • Support Attack L1
Spirit Commands:
  • Trust (25) – heals the target unit for 2000 HP
  • Iron Wall (30)
Mech Features:
  • Repair Module
  • Resupply Module
Mondo’s Voice Actor: Kouzou Shioya (other known works: Majin Buu in the Dragon Ball series, Polonaise in Gaogaigar, Newman in Seinfeld (!) and many others.)

This kid is all about defense and this game has no need for such people. Bench him.
The Mega Rider can make for a decent-ish support unit but there are many better things – no, you don’t get to have any units actually ride it. It does have a MAPW that hits a straight line in front but, again, there are much better units to fill that role (天).

Nahel Argama (Bright Noa, Torres, Saegusa)
Pilot Skills (Bright):
  • Leadership
  • Support Attack L1
  • Support Defense L1
  • EN Save – all EN-based attacks cost 20% less to use
Spirit Commands (Bright):
  • Strike (25)
  • Guts
Spirit Commands (Torres):
  • Scan (1) – Allows you to see the stats of target enemy unit before actually engaging them
  • Trust (30)
Spirit Commands (Saegusa):
  • Vigor (20) – heals 30% of max total HP
  • Gain (20) – earn double exp from the next battle

Bright’s Voice Actor: Hirotaka Suzuouki (other known works: Banjou in Daitarn 3, Shingo in UCHUU SPACE NUMBER ONE Goshogun, Taiha in Zeorymer and many others)
Torres Voice Actor: Hiroyuki Shibamoto (other known works: Karl in Captain Tylor, Kazuo in ESPer Mami and a few others)
Saegusa’s Voice Actor: Kouzou Shioya again

The prototypical battleship: bulky, can’t hit for poo poo but has good range and a MAPW. This game is very limited on ships, so you’ll be pretty much forced to use it throughout it all.
Bright is always reliable and his two sub pilots add good support spirit commands.

Whew, we’re finally done. It should be noted that, if you wanna get a free Dijeh SE-R, you’ll want to keep all these UC characters leveled up. Later in the game, all of them will need to average out level 25.
Do you guys need to see this…? Because I really don’t wanna have to use Beecha, Mondo, Elle and Iino (and, yes, I know what this would entail).

Time to get to work.

That dinky beam cannon isn’t enough to kill even these weak-rear end Draus.

Puru Two will follow it up for the kill.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PU09osikhKQ
Also, the Giganos grunts are incredibly loud. It should be noted that Arado’s VA actually does one of them, though he didn’t show in this batch.

Enemy Phase!

The Practice Squad stands idle, while the mooks close in.

Player Phase!

We’ll build up some morale to show off better attacks.

Aaaay, it’s everyone’s favorite UC BGM!

And the RNGs out for blood, I see.

Have a Beecha movie – soon, he’ll be sent to the nice colony upstate. More importantly, it means more Giganos yelling.

Alright, let’s begin.

: I’ll bring your scrap as a present to the Captain! The famous Gundam Team will fall to the Practice Squad!
: Practice, schmactice! You’re not dropping me just like that!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yafQKXjOuI
Just a little bit added damage while everyone else closes in.

Enemy Phase!

Werner wants to take a swing a Roux. He’s actually pretty accurate but Elle is covering her. FYI, when a Support skill can be triggered, the game will tell you under your guy’s box. If you want to toggle it off, it’s the third button from the left.

: They’re fast…! So these are the Metal Armors of the Giganos Empire?!
: Glory will be ours if we can best the famous Gundam Team!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ef0lViu482Q
I like the little touch with the missiles at the end.

Next, Karl goes after Puru Two. Too bad for him, she has enough morale to use her Funnels.

: The hostilities are still going, even after Neo Zeon’s defeat… Then, I also have a job to do!
: I’ll fight with Judau and his friends to put an end to this!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfKR7T5lOfQ
Puru: “I hit my head in the monitooors!”

And Dan goes for Bright.

: Destroying the Nahel Argama would be a major blow to the Federation’s morale!
: Stop his advance! Let that Metal Armor get any closer and our bridge will be easy pickings!

Almost there with this one.

The two Draus attack Beecha and get weakened.

Player Phase!

Alright, let’s go and clean house.

: Aim all batteries at twelve o’ clock! That blue unit’s a new model!
: Your fame is well deserved, Bright Noa. I can see you won’t be sunk easily!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTLGdxhHHOI

: You have to be chosen to join the Practice Squad – only the best make it here! And now you’ll learn what that means!
: Get real! I don’t care if you’re the best; you’re not bringing me down!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqBLWiN8MSw
That’s one down and the Super Gundam’s best weapon shown.

Take Karl out and he retreats, noting that he can’t continue fighting anymore.

Oh, sorry, I forgot the one other good thing about the Mega Rider is that he has a chainable attack. With enemy units adjacent to one another, you get a prompt to do a Double Attack.

Mondo’s so insignificant, he doesn’t even get a cut-in.

And getting rid of those gave Roux just enough morale to use the Long Beam Saber!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGA_I6BnljM
Now that’s nice.

: A gold MS! Is that Quattro Bajeena?!
: But… why are his movements are so clumsy? Is this some kind of feint?
: E-easy there! Don’t take me for some bigwig!

Werner is appalled that his unit was wrecked and runs off.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCIx47DiveU
And Judau got just enough morale for the Hyper Beam Saber. I approve the use of the Yuusha pose.

Dan doesn’t know how he’ll face the Captain after this. Still, he flees.

And here are the convos we missed:

: That blue mech… a new Metal Armor?
: I just need to bring down their ship and they’ll be stuck up here!

--

: Hey! If you guys wanna spread war around, then you’re gonna have to deal with me first!
: Wh-what the?! The way he flies runs counter to every methodology!

--

: An offense-focused Gundam, hm? Then I need to close in and keep him on the defensive!
: You actually think that textbook tactic’s gonna fly with me? Come on now!

--

: Show me the strength of one of the Gundams that fought Neo Zeon!
: I didn’t do any of that just to show off, OK? No way I’m letting you take me out!

--

: Think you can handle our flawless joint offensive?!
: Urgh! These three just keep coming!

--

: drat it, these guys won’t sit still!
: As if a sub-flight system could actually keep up with a Metal Armor’s mobility!

--

: I won’t lose, no matter the enemy, if I have Judau and Puru Two with me!

Torres confirms all enemies destroyed and Bright wants to go after Maillot right now. However, something else pops on the radar – only one unit and of unknown affiliation.
Again, it’s the Medius and the woman tags the Nahel Argama ahead. This is one of the targets they were told to pursue, so what should they do? As before, the pilot wants AI1 to learn the fear of actual combat. Hugo and Aqua are right on their heels, so the woman figures that’s their first objective met: this should put those two in position to be picked up by the ship.

Judau doesn’t know what they’re looking at – it’s not an MS or Metal Armor. More importantly, are they dealing with a friendly or an enemy, Roux wonders. Judau figures we’ll only know after asking but Saegusa can’t get in touch.
Regardless, Torres picks up another unknown unit on approach but, this one, is giving out a Federation IFF signal.

In comes Hugo and Aqua, and their initial “convo” with the Medius goes the same as the Super Robot version, so you can check there.
As they prepare to engage, Puru figures they were in pursuit of that black unit. Puru Two also sees some design similarities – are they of the same series? Indeed, Aqua gets in touch and identifies them as being from the Tsentr Project; she tells them of the Medius’ theft and requests the Nahel Argama’s assistance.
Torres confirms her story and, furthermore, they’ve just received a Class A order to go after the Medius – the same priority as their orders to escort the D Weapons. That settles it for Bright, who passes it along to the units.
After this, the rest of the Hugo/Aqua vs. Medius scene plays out – Aqua panics, Hugo sighs, the Medius’ folks are less than impressed and off we go.

Cerberus (Hugo Medio/Aqua Centrum)
Pilot Skills (Hugo):
  • Fortune
  • Support Attack L1
  • Support Defense L1
Pilot Skills (Aqua):
  • Gunfight L1
  • Shield Defense L1
  • Support Defense L1
Spirit Commands (Hugo):
  • Accelerate (5)
  • Strike (15)
Spirit Commands (Aqua):
  • Focus (10)
  • Lucky (40)
  • Alert (10)
Hugo’s Voice Actor: Hiroki Takahashi (other known works: Ryu in Street Fighter, Arthur in SEED Destiny, Jounouchi (Joey in the west) in the Yu-Gi-Oh and many others)
Aqua’s Voice Actress: Yuri Shiratori (other known works: Rena in Ace Combat 3 Electrosphere, Mokona in Rayearth, Yukina in Yu Yu Hakusho and many others)

It should be noted that Hugo’s ranged stat isn’t as crap as it is in the Super Robot route but it still isn’t the best – Judau and Puru Two beat him, and he ties with Puru. His evasion is also nine points higher, which makes him a better fit for the Cerberus.
As you’d expect, this Real Robot is all about dodging and sniping. Aqua would actually be a better pilot, what with Gunfight and a better ranged stat, but this is what we have.

You’ll want to buy Hugo Hit & Away ASAP to use his strongest attacks without sacrificing movement... though, fair warning, he won't have to worry about lacking post-movement attacks later on. If you wanna save the PPs, you can hold back on Hit & Away and make do until then.

There’s actually a resupply pod floating nearby, so let’s park the Cerberus there for some terrain bonuses.

: Th-there! I’ve got the estimates on its movements!
: Just shut up before you bite out your tongue, Aqua!
: Let’s begin. Show me what the Cerberus can do!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0cXXzxp2bk
How come some funnel-like weapons have strings and others don’t?

After the first battle, Hugo has the same reaction as before to the Medius’ movements.

Enemy Phase!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8tBunwlHdg
I left that image up there just so you know that the RNG decided to pay me back, with dividends. Also, here’s Hugo’s Radical Railgun.

Deal enough damage and, again, AI1 starts freaking out and the Medius’ pilots decide to pull off now that their mission is done.
As Hugo and Aqua fume, Torres confirms that the area is all clear of enemies. Then, it’s time for the Nahel Argama to descend to the surface and make up for lost time against the Giganos.
Furthermore, Bright asks for the Cerberus to be brought aboard – he’s got questions for the pilots.

Aboard the Argama, Aqua fills in Bright about the Tsentr Project, Terminus Energy, how it is present everywhere but is also very hard to control, etc.
The conversation quickly derails as Beecha asks about Aqua’s swimsuit-esque attire. Elle and Roux shake their heads at its magnetism towards the male gaze (Beecha can't not look) and Aqua insists it is necessary to control the TE Engine’s output.

: I see… Either way, it’s very nice.
: It sure is…
: Huh?
: Captain?
: N-nothing! So, what about that Medius Locus?

Following that, Aqua gives the rundown on the Medius and its Lazmunanium, and how things could get very Devil Gundam-y if people messed with it the wrong way. Judau and friends saw the monstrous mech absorb a colony a year ago and, as a matter of that, Bright was present for it. The Devil Gundam Incident happened right after the Gryps Conflict, before he met the kids.
All in all, Aqua and Hugo need to run after the stolen mech ASAP… and that’s when Bright gives them the order he just received from HQ, transferring them to the Nahel Argama. They’re still to keep pursuing the Medius while aboard.

Hugo and Aqua are, as before, confused by this change of orders but they won’t object to it. Inwardly, Bright notes that it is understandable that they’ve doubts regarding this – he does, too. But, regardless, the ship will continue its current assignment and rendezvous with the group transporting the D Weapons.

And then we end with the same Hugo/Aqua convo as the Super Robot version.

Next update, we'll actually be sticking with this crew. While I do not really care for the Cerberus, I DO care about getting to go ↑←↑ as soon as humanly possible!

You know, its hard to take the bad guys seriously when their team is the practice squad. How the hell is that supposed to be intimidating?

In truth, they aren't as ELITE as they make it sound. According to this wiki, the Practice Squad is actually a catch-all term for the reserve troops of the Giganos royal guard (though these three are the only ones shown on camera).

These guys got assigned to Meio but, at the end of the day, they're not that high in the organization.

But yeah, the Shangri-La gang. They really shine more in Alpha 2/3, where they can be squad filler or useful spirit bots (like Beecha being an Accelbot, for instance) for better units. That said, you'll still want to dump some levels into them because of reasons. No, not the Djieh-SR reasons. Something else altogether.

I remember only really finding room for the Purus, Roux and Iino as squaddies. The Purus were always great, Roux could survive well enough and Inno had a cheap Iron Wall, which made him the perfect guy to fly the Mega Rider next to some Super and keep their EN topped off.

Beecha died FAR too easily since I don't think he learns Focus, Mondo is overall crap and Elle just couldn't stand out enough to be usable.

And I know what you're talking about (I suffered that trauma, too) but I would rather still bench these guys and use my NG+ funds to cover the difference.

And I think the Giganos commander here is supposed to be named Maillot. Though the Japanese wiki has the wacky idea that his name is actually "Myyo Plart," which is an extremely American name.

Are you being sarcastic? Because I don't think I've ever heard of "Myyo" as an American name!

And I had no idea Maillot was written as マイヨ but, indeed, you're right.

I'm keeping his surname as Plato, though, because I think it sounds cooler... and I don't wanna go through this LP thinking "MAILLOT PLART SPACE COP".

Question to Brunom, if Cerebus needs Hit and Away to be successful, what skill is needed for Garmraid?

Basic Super Robot stuff, really. Infight, SP Regen, Attacker, E-Save and Guard all work. There are no morale+ skills here and MX is notorious as giving you few mooks, so Fighting Spirit should also be considered for those with high morale requirements.

Alright then so Infight and Attacker for Garmraid... what about Cerberus, is it the same?

I'm playing through MX Portable and there are a couple of tricky missions that can easily get you a game over if not careful, not sure if they are tricky on the PS2 version.

Yeah, only replace Infight and Guard with Gunfight and Predict. Taking a look at the Cerberus' (spoilers if you haven't watched every mech anime/SRW ever, I guess)eventual upgrade, it actually gains a lot of post-movement attacks and the stronger ones are melee oriented. So, depending on how patient you are, you CAN build Cerb Hugo with a melee focus in preparation to that - if so, Hit & Away isn't really necessary.

SP Regen, Attacker take priority, mind; after you get those for the Cerberus, decide what you want more of. In MXP, land of bloated HPs, endurance is always nice so EN Save would be useful but the extra damage of In/Gunfight could help if you can get it high enough.

Ask me about being the best dad ever.

And here we are at the intermission menu – learn to use it because you’ll be here a lot. Here’s what every button does:
  • Pilot Status – basic list of your current guys
  • Pilot Training – spend PP (Pilot Points) earned in battle to buy Skills. We’ll go over this once I have enough to buy the good stuff
  • Pilot Exchange – reassign your guys to different units – usually this only applies to folks of the same series.
  • Unit Status – same as above, only for your mechs
  • Unit Upgrade – spend cash to improve your mechs’ stats and firepower
  • Unit Parts – equip items dropped by enemies for various boosts
  • Glossary – info on mechs and people.
  • Options
  • Save/Load menu
  • Proceed to next mission
On the right side, the DATA bit shows (top to bottom) your current money, the total turn count and stages cleared. Below that is your top ace, the person with the most kills… Beecha is actually tied with folks but, regardless, there is something wrong here.

When in the pilot exchange menu, simply select the pilot you want to use and, then, the unit you want them in. In this case, I’m kicking Mondo’s worthless rear end out of the Mega Rider for Iino who’s at least a decent support.

The unit upgrade menu will bring out a list of units for you to select. When you do, you’ll get two to three different options.
The first one is the upgrade screen for the mech itself:
  • HP
  • EN – expended by EN-consuming weapons and by flying around (1 EN per square moved, 5 EN per turn airborne)
  • Mobility – talked about it in the first update. A big factor in how well your unit will dodge
  • Armor – Self-explanatory; your Super Robots want this.

Next is the weapons’ upgrade menu and, unlike most games, weapon damage, accuracy and crit ratio are upgraded separately. At the very least the latter two are dirt cheap for a decent while. Damage upgrades are always a priority but save some change to boost the other two, especially for your more inaccurate guys.

Finally, an option only found in a paltry few games: Shields. As in, the shields your units use when triggering the Shield Defense skill.
While in most games triggering a shield block is a percentage, in here you’ll actually trigger it all the time… so long as your shield has enough charges. If you block and reduce incoming damage to 0, you keep your current charge, but it damage actually gets through, then you lose one.
If the shield charge empties out, you won’t be blocking anymore. Every bit you upgrade in here adds one charge, giving you more leeway.
This upgrade is especially good if you find units that combine both a barrier with a shield. The damage mitigation provided by those combined features is such that, more often than not, you’ll be nullifying all damage forever (especially if your guy is running Prevail).
These are also quite cheap, so you’ve no reason not to boost them a wee bit as a safety net.

So, I had no idea this was a thing but, apparently, NG+ also presents you with a bunch of EVERY SINGLE UNIT PART IN THE GAME (up to nine, says the wiki). I suppose that’s one way of making Beecha and co. usable: slap some Haros on them!
Turns out I’m having the last laugh here, thread! Mwahahahaha!

And that’s enough tinkering around in the intermission. Let’s get back to the Nahel Argama crew.

We find our folks some time later, with the Nahel Argama having just finished its descent onto Earth. Aqua’s glad to see that nothing bad happened while it was all going down. Leina asks what she thinks of the ship and, honestly, Aqua says it’s been a parade of surprises.
She did not expect the ship that fought so much during the Neo Zeon and Baam conflicts to be housing this many kids like her and the Purus. Or that those same kids would be the famous pilots of the Gundam Team. Mind, she tells Beecha that she doesn’t mean this is a bad way – she’s impressed that they managed to be so successful despite their young age.
The kids tell her that they weren’t looking to "be successful" or to fight just for kicks. Everything that happened – including them getting on this ship and into those battles – was a result of a long and convoluted chain of events. Aqua understands that but, whatever their reasons, they pulled through and survived. That’s deserving of a pat on the back in her eyes.

Maybe to a soldier but Beecha isn’t really interested in a career in the military. Leina sighs that this is all due to how crazy things are with this world – hopefully, once the war really ends, they’ll be able to go back to their peaceful lives.
Aqua mulls of how different their mindset is from hers… but, then again, these kids shouldn’t really be fighting. Rather, they’re at an age where they should just be in school.
“But never mind that. I wanna ask you something, Aqua… Is Hugo your boyfriend?” Beecha cuts her train of thought short.

Iino gives him crap for just coming out and dropping this personal question on her but the kid doesn’t see the big deal. Regardless, Aqua is quick to say that they are just partners: “And, besides, I prefer men that are older than me.” Beecha seems a wee bit dejected at her answer.
Torres then gets on the P.A. and raises the combat level, telling all pilots to get to their units and be on standby to deploy. Looks like we’re almost joined up with the guys we’re escorting. Aqua asks if they know what kind of prototypes they’re freighting around, saying an interest in mechanical stuff comes with the job.
Well, Iino tells her what they know: the prototypes, nicknamed D Weapons, are actually called Dragonars and there are three different types. The standard close, long and medium-range split? Nope, the last one is actually tailored for electronic warfare.

Aqua can see how those diverse types would fit in nicely with so many different combat scenarios. Seems like the Federation is really making a push to build a next generation fighter for their main army. Actually, her assumption is wrong again. As Beecha explains, the Dragonars are a Giganos design, brought to the Federation by Professor Plato after he defected.
Obviously, the Giganos don’t like that which is why the Argama was assigned to keep them in one piece. From what Beecha’s gathered, it seems the Feds are already moving to use them in actual combat.
Aqua wonders what kind of pilots would be chosen to fly these state-of-the-art units… they must be the best of the best.

Back in the bridge, Misumaru is telling Bright that there’s been a slight change in the Argama’s orders: a request from the Federation GHQ.
The initial plan was for them to escort the D Weapons over to the Chongqing base in China but, now, they’re also being asked to transport this EVA-02 to the Yokosuka Harbor in Japan. Misumaru explains that the EVA’s transport fleet is travelling rather close to the D Weapons’, so the government’s head honchos figured the Argama could well escort both since we’re in the area.
Bright seems a bit miffed but Misumaru says that, unlike the sea-based carriers being used, the Nahel Argama has a lot more ease of movement. He figures that’s what caught NERV’s eye.

While this is just be a transport job, Bright asks what they’re to do if something happens… but, actually, something has already happened. Misumaru relates that, twelve hours ago, the EVA’s group got into a battle with an Angel. It was destroyed but not before the thing did catastrophic damage to the EVA’s transport vessel. It is currently stranded and, as such, it falls on us and the D Weapons’ haulers to lend a hand.
All in all, we’ll head to Japan first and then over to China.

And, on that subject, how are things in Japan? The three empires (Mycenae, Dinosaur, Devil) are done but, in their place, Angels and UFOs are stepping onto the stage. What about Tokyo Jupiter, that impenetrable barrier?
Same as the last ten-ish years, Misumaru reports: no movement. Still, he figures it’s only a matter of time. See, the folks at TERRA, the anti-MU federal institute, are setting up a major offensive. Are they actually going to try breaking into the barrier?
Indeed and everyone has been called to take part – Misumaru’s Space Corps included. Depending on how things look, Bright’s team may also be called over. He understands and, with that done, Misumaru apologizes for working the guy to the bone. Between the work during the postwar with the Baam and this mission, Bright hasn’t been given leave in a long while. By rights, Misumaru would have had the Nadesico B do all this but, as Bright’s aware, they’re busy with the Hisago Plan’s experiments.

Misumaru will have them join us once that’s done but, until then, the least he can do is send some added help to support the Nahel Argama: the fine men who fought the three empires in Japan.
Finally, Misumaru has noticed that Bright sent flowers for his late daughter; Bright noticed the anniversary of her death was close. Misumaru apologizes for causing Bright to concern himself with what’s his personal responsibility, though the captain says he needn’t feel that way.
While he never met the girl in person, he is well aware of the enormous impact she and her peers had in the war against the Jovians. The Earth Sphere would be in a far worse situation had she not help pave the way for the armistice. Misumaru figures she’d be very happy to hear such praise from the captain of the White Base and, with that, wishes him good fortune.

Location: NERV HQ

Gendou has just received some information and a hidden man is quite impressed: even with the D Weapons providing support, the EVA-02’s pilot managed to kill the Angel in thirty-six seconds after deploying. Way before the unit’s internal power ran out. She’s pretty good but, then again, that’s what Gendou expects her to be.
On the flipside, however, the Federation lost a carrier and a battleship and they’re sending the bill straight to the 3rd Division. Gendou has already brought this to “the committee” and figures it is a small price to pay if an Angel’s been defeated.
The man sees that everything’s been going according to schedule thus far… what happens next? That will depend on whether TERRA’s upcoming Operation Overlord is successful or not.

On that matter, the man says he’s bringing some new information regarding said operation. Gendou wants that information delivered ASAP and that’s why he had one Captain Katsuragi sent over to the carrier Aquapolis. She’ll handle bringing the EVA-02 over.
Once she’s there, the man is to come back to HQ ahead of the group, also bringing in a certain thing for Gendou…

Over by said carrier, Ben (in blue) introduces Misato Katsuragi to the captain, James C. Douglas. She introduces herself formally and says NERV HQ sent her over to oversee the transport of the EVA-02.
Douglas has heard of her and sees that she’s as beautiful as advertised. Misato is a bit surprised and asks who told them about her.

That’d be our mystery man, Kaji, and Misato is quite annoyed to see him here; he says he’s accompanying Asuka all the way from Germany. She is not happy about this, having already too much to worry about without dealing with him.
But, regardless, Misato has questions: was he the one who authorized the 02 to be sortied in the last battle? Kaji says it wasn’t really a matter of authorization – just an on-site decision made under exigent circumstances. And, then, some ships ended up destroyed.
Kaji tells her to take that up with the Angel as it’s not like any of them expected to come across something like that out here.

The pilot herself, Asuka, jumps in to say that Kaji isn’t to blame. It’s been a long time since Misato saw her and she’s impressed at how big she’s gotten. Mind, the girl herself says it’s not just her height that’s gotten more womanly… “Right, Kaji?”
Kaji quips that she’ll catch the eye of all the boys in Japan once they arrive but Asuka mumbles that she doesn’t care about any other guy other than him. Douglas cuts in, asking asks for Misato’s attention so he can debrief her on the ship’s status.

They’ve already brought the EVA-02 from the carrier “Over The Rainbow” into this one; now, they’re waiting the arrival of the Nahel Argama. Misato asks if there’s a problem to necessitate that and, indeed, Douglas reports of the info sent by the Argama that Giganos troops have descended into this region.
Misato already figures they’re chasing after the D Weapons and, from the looks of things, Douglas says there’s a very real risk of them reaching us before the Argama itself. What will they do if that happens?

: Then we will deploy the D Weapons… the Dragonars.
: Whaaat?! Those three numbskulls?!
: Who’re you calling a dumbskull?
: Numbskull, Kaine. Numbskull.
: Hey, whose side are you on?!
: Oh, come on. At least call us “Three Musketeers”, why don’t you?
: “Three Musketeers”? You guys barely qualify to be the “Three Stooges”!
: What a sharp tongue you have. And you have no idea how appalled I am to be tarred with the same brush as Kaine and Tap.
: What’s that supposed to mean, huh, Light?!
: What, you think you’re top dog around here? Well, I got a news flash for you.
: Shut your traps! You’re in the presence of your superior officers! Drop that bickering before I drop my foot on your asses!
: Um… Lt. Douglas, who are they?
: … They’re the Dragonar pilots I was talking about.
: Huh?!
: That’s the usual reaction… Still, there were special circumstances that brought this about.
: MANY special circumstances.
: Like, you could probably call it “dumb luck” or “coincidence” or something.
: More importantly, what the hell are you three doing here? I’m pretty sure you were supposed to be on standby aboard your units.
: Well, when we heard this beautiful officer had come aboard, we figured we needed to go and say “hi” before doing that.
: Yup. Please let us introduce ourselves, Sergeant.
: It’s gotta happen if we’re to keep the chain of command running smooth, see?
: “Chain of command”… You three never once gave a drat for any of that.
: Leave them. Airman 3rd class Wakaba, introduce yourself immediately and return to your post.
: Aye, aye, sir! Captain Katsuragi, I am airman 3rd class Kaine Wakaba and pilot of the Dragonar 1! It is a pleasure to meet you!
: Tap Oceano, airman 3rd class and pilot of the Dragonar 2!
: Airman 3rd class Light Newman, tasked with flying the Dragonar 3!
: Captain Misato Katsuragi. I’ll only be here until Japan but it’s a pleasure to meet you regardless.
: Such a brief stay… I could easily be with you for all eternity.
: Maybe some other time.

Asuka jumps in and asks if Misato brought the “socket” for her EVA. Indeed she has, much to the girl’s relief as it means she won’t need to rely on the Three Stooges. Kaine gets on her grill again but she sees no problem with calling a duck a duck.
Kaine fires back that those who call others stupid are the actual stupid ones and that, of course, pushes Asuka’s buttons. Light sighs at the children squabbling and asks Misato what that “socket” thing is. In short, it’s a part that’s needed to connect the Umbilical Cable to an EVA; with it, it can operate for far longer times than if it was running solely on its internal battery.
The thing looks like a legit power cord and it tells Light that, in that case, the EVAs can’t operate too far away from their power source. That’s a bit of a problem, Misato concedes, and Tap laughs at the big bad mech being like a dog on a leash.
Asuka doesn’t appreciate the comparison: “That mech is the first ever combat-oriented, true-to-form Evangelion! It will save the fate of mankind and it’s totally different from your dinky units!”

Kaine doesn’t agree, however. The Dragonars are a very necessary part of Earth’s defense against the Giganos. And, as such, the three of them decided to do whatever was necessary to bring them to Chongqing in order to bring this war to an end, even if just a bit faster. Kaine doesn’t really know what she’s about but they know this is serious business – not a competition.
Asuka blusters at getting told off, calling his “posturing” stupid, and Kaine sighs at how hostile the girl is – she could stand to take some lessons from Linda.

: Who’s Linda?
: Ah? Umm… she’s my… girlfriend…?
: Whaat? Since when?
: Well… She will be, after this is over.
: Hah, them’s some big words.
: What about you, then, hotshot? How’re things going with Rose?
: Eeh, they’re going. Bit by bit.
: So… who is Linda?
: A refugee from the Moon, who left there along with Rose. The five of us were together on the transport ship Idaho until it came down to Earth.
: Hm-hmm… And where is she now?
: Last I heard, she was in a refugee camp helping nurse people there.
: Aah, my sweet Linda… How I want to see you again…

The convo is interrupted when the alarm rings, signaling that the Giganos Metal Armors have arrived. Douglas sends the Dragonar pilots out to intercept and Light is eager to put on a good show of the D-Team’s skill for Misato.
Asuka wants to deploy along with them but Misato stops her, saying that the EVA has crap movement ratings in the water. While it could fight the flightless Angel, the flying Metal Armors will run circles around her.
Asuka doesn’t care and runs off anyway, leaving Misato in a panic. Kaji just sighs at her youthful gumption and tells Misato not to worry – she’ll be fine, with Kaine and the others around. He was looking when they fought the Angel and you know what? Those three are pretty good. He has a hard time believing they were civilians until not long ago.

And he can’t even chalk it up to the units’ specs or just luck. The only reason those three survived thus far is that they’re legitimately strong. Are they just like Amuro Ray, Misato asks?
Well, they aren’t Newtypes but one thing they all have in common is that none had training prior to taking up a mech. That tells Kaji that, simply put, they just have the right stuff for the job.
Isn’t that the same with the EVA-01’s pilot, Shinji Ikari? Hmm…

Mission 2 (Real Route) – D and E

: Alright! Bring it on, Giganos!
: Airman Wakaba, we’ve just received a transmission from the Nahel Argama. They are three minutes away from us – you three must hold the enemy at bay until then.
: Heh, just watch, Lt. We’ll kick the Giganos straight outta here even before those guys arrive.
: Hold on, Kaine. I don’t think it’s going to be that easy.
: Oho, what’s going on, Light? Getting cold feet?
: What happened to all that huffing and puffing you did for Cpt. Katsuragi?
: I just did a look-up on the incoming enemies’ data with the D-3… The Giganos’ Blue Hawk is there.
: What?!

: LCL Füllung. Anfang der Bewegung. Anfang des Nervenanschlusses. Auslöses von Links-kleidung. Synchro-start.
: Whoa, she’s sortieing too?
: And what kind of language was that…?
: German – she’s half-Japanese.
: Always quick with the intel, eh?
: Well, it is my job. Speaking of, how about we roll up our sleeves and get back to work?
: Do you hear me, Asuka? The EVA’s movement range is limited due to the umbilical cord, so focus on supporting the D-Team. Also—
: If the cable’s disconnected, I’ll only have three minutes-worth of energy, right? I know that much.
: Heads up, people! Here they come!

: Over there, Captain!
: Hm, the Dragonars are flying. When did they manage that?
: Ah, crap, it really is him. And he’s brought his boy band along.
: Didn’t think they’d follow us all the way down here… drat, these guys don’t know when to quit!
: Who are they?
: The Blue Hawk, ace pilot of the Giganos, and his groupies.
: “Blue Hawk”? But his thing is more violet than anything.
: My guess is “Violet Hawk” didn't sound as cool.
: Are we clear? Our targets are, first and foremost, the D Weapons. Do not bother engaging the carriers.
: Why not? NERV’s new weapon, the Evangelion, is aboard.
: And it might eventually threaten Giganos. We should take the chance to destroy it!
: “A bird in hand is worth two in the bush.” Our priority remains the D Weapons.
: Yes, sir!
: Forward, then. Engage!

Mission Objective: All enemies destroyed
Mission Failure: Any allied unit destroyed
Almost nothing to worry about here, though Maillot is quite powerful and accurate (while the Dragonars aren’t too beefy). Provided you take care around him, you’ll be fine.

Now, let’s take a look at our new buddies:

Evangelion Unit #02(Asuka Langley Souryu)
Pilot Skills:
  • Revenge – 20% extra damage during counterattack; that is, when you attack an enemy on their turn
  • Sword Cut L1
  • Support Attack L1
  • Support Defense L1
Spirit Commands:
  • Gain (15)
  • Alert (10)
Mech Features:
  • A.T. Field – negates any damage below 4000, unless it is a barrier-piercing weapon
  • Umbilical Cable – unit restores all EN at the start of the turn, but can only move 10 spaces away from its connection point (either a power plant or battleship). Can be manually disconnected, whereupon the unit will lose 50 EN every turn and deactivate when EN reaches 0. The tether can be reconnected when adjacent to a connection point.
Asuka’s Voice Actress: Yuko Miyamura (other known works: Chun-Li in some Street Fighters, Larxene in Kingdom Hearts, Parfait in Knights of Ramune and some others)

Asuka’s meant as a legit offensive unit and the EVA-02 can surely fit the bill. A.T. Field is hilariously overpowered in this game, where only a handful of enemies (usually proper bosses) are actually good enough to pop it, so you can throw her right into the fray.
The Umbilical Cord should always be on, if possible, a ship that can trail close enough behind her. That EN refill keeps the barrier running and ten spaces is plenty (mind, on this mission Asuka is tethered to a stationary carrier, so that won’t fly).
Asuka as a pilot, though is… average, really. Her accuracy stat is downright horrid – ALL the ZZ kids beat her by quite a decent margin – but her attack stats are decent. Regardless, her unit is good (and gets better later) that you can easily find her a spot on the team, should you wish to.
Also, the accuracy stat could be like that to account for the EVA-exclusive Synchronization stat.

In essence, the sync is decided on launch by the pilot’s level and it affects the accuracy and evasion rate. Under 25%, and you take a 5% hit to both; between 26 and 99%, it follows the formula % = (Sync Rate/5) – 10, meaning the break-even point is 50%. At 100%, you get a flat 10% bonus to both rates.

Also, you can see where the cable’s tethered to and how far Asuka can move from the connection point. Blue is her move on this turn while red indicates the 10-tile limit.

But enough Evangelion – time for the real stars of this show!

Dragonar Unit 1 (Kaine Wakaba)
Pilot Skills:
  • ??? – the asterisk beside it means you can’t replace this
  • Sword Cut L1
  • Shield Defense L1
  • Assisted Attack L1
Spirit Commands:
  • Invincible (10)
  • Focus (15)
Kaine’s Voice Actor: Masami Kikuchi (other known works: Iino in ZZ, Tenchi in Tenchi Muyo, Keiichi in Ah! My Goddess and many others)

Oh, baby, I loved the Dragonar boys the second I heard their theme song. Yes, their series rips off a lot of the original Gundam but I don’t care!
Kaine is the melee attacker of the bunch and he does his job well. Melee stat is good, evasion is around a B+ and his ranged stat isn’t bad either, though the D-1 hasn’t much in that department. His unit has a shield for added survivability, good mobility and already comes with TWO combined attackers with Tap and Light, for some great stopping power.
Deploy him – deploy all the Dragonars – because they’ll only get better. By the endgame, Kaine will be a powerhouse.

Dragonar Unit 2 (Tap Oceano)
Pilot Skills:
  • Prevail L1
  • Support Attack L1
  • Support Defense L1
Spirit Commands:
  • Iron Wall (30)
  • Strike (20)
Tap’s Voice Actor: Houchu Ohtsuka (other known works: Yazan in Z Gundam, Gates in Full Metal Panic, Beck in Big O and a truckload more.)

Tap is the “worst” of the Dragonars, though he’s still pretty good at what he does. And that is provide offensive and defensive support. Everything about him screams that he’s meant to be trailing someone, throwing support attacks and defending with his bulkier-than-most D-2 when push comes to shove.
His offensive stats are decent (ranged is his better one, of course) and his accuracy is actually pretty nice. Defense is also high for a Real Robot
Getting him Hit & Away ASAP will help him get more on the offense.

Dragonar Unit 3 (Light Newman)
Pilot Skills:
  • Counter L1 – sometimes attack first when an enemy tries doing so. Activation rate depends on the Skill stat and Counter level.
  • Support Attack L1
  • Support Defense L1
Mech Features:
  • Repair Module
  • Jammer – nullifies any missile attacks (works on support defense)
  • EWAC (Strong) – provides a +30% boost to evasion and accuracy to anyone within a two tile radius. Also reveals enemy stats.
Spirit Commands:
  • Focus (15)
  • Trust (30)
Light’s Voice Actor: Kenyuu Horiuchi (Jamil in Gundam X, Raiden in MGS, The Claw in Gun x Sword and a billion others)

Ohohohoo, Light is one of the best combat supporters in this game and that’s solely based on how awesome the D-3 is! Missile attacks are very common, so his Jammer and Support Defense combo is already cool but the gem is that EWAC. Light is one of the kings of A Portable because that free +30% boost is amazing. Light makes Focus-less units dodge reliably and Focus’d guys nigh untouchable.
The D-3 has jack for weapons but, screw it, it’s not meant to be attacking head-on. Light’s offensive stats are the worst of the Dragonar pilots but his Skill stat is through the roof, meaning he has a better chance of landing critical hits.

All in all, the Dragonars are actually a rare example of SRW pushing you towards keeping an actual battle formation. Kaine is obviously meant to lead the charge, with Tap at his back and Light hanging behind them to spread that EWAC. As Aqua said, there’s little they can’t do together – “Three Musketeers”, indeed.

Now that I am done gushing, let’s get to work. The EVA can attack just fine underwater but moving is a different story. As such, I’ll have Asuka hang on the carrier and go for the lone Gebai MAFFU in range.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcD01xBm5hE
Also, I absolutely despise “Decisive Battle” as a full-on battle BGM. Now, the PS2 MX wasn’t at the point where SRW allowed you to switch those things, so I’m stuck in the videos. Outside them, however, I’ll be using Asuka’s actual theme starting on mission 3. I rather like the movie version:

The Dragonars move forward but nothing else is close.

Enemy Phase!

Most Giganos mooks hang back but the closer ones attack the Dragonars.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FTS8_5G4D-U
So, of course, after I spent time talking up the Dragonars the RNG sees fit to screw Kaine over.
It would’ve been a oneshot without the Gebai’s shield, though.

One more!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uqaDyAvVZ4
And again… It’s gonna be one of those days.

Player Phase!

Asuka jumps in the water and blows away one of the weakened mooks. Light saunters onward, just in range to finish the last.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGklRCkuW38
Made a video because I really like the D-3’s spinning head-radar thing.

Kaine and Tap close in with him.

Enemy Phase!

Clever girl… Werner and Dan attack outside of Kaine’s range, while Karl guns for light.

: Today’s the end of the road for you, Dragonars!
: We’re not amateurs like before, guy! Come take a look!

: If anything, I’ll at least make sure to end you myself, Dragonars!
: Oho, the groupie’s surprisingly gung-ho.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIBImPSTDxA
And here’s the Jammer in action. Missiles can’t do jack against the D3!

: drat you, Dragonars! I’m paying you back in full for what you did!
: Shut it, groupie! It’s you folks who’re gonna pay for what you did to Chephov!
: Chephov? …Oh, the Giganos officer back at the research station?
: He tried stopping us from doing our mission, so we had to put him down!
: Oh, go to hell! You killed the old man just to add another highlight in your career!
: Watch this, Lt. Chephov! I’m bringing this guy down with everything you taught me!

Erm… maybe in a bit.

Player Phase!

: To all units – the Nahel Argama has arrived!
: Oh, yeah! The tables have turned now!

: All units, deploy! Support the D-Team and their fleet!

: They’ve caught up to us…
: Oh? Do I see the Gundam Team?
: They’re the folks who took down the Neo Zeon boss lady, yeah?
: Haman Karn, right.
: Heh, I wonder what kind of group they are.
: I bet they’re all a buncha hardasses like Sgt. Ben.
: Nah, I’m hoping for a surprise. How about a group of gorgeous ladies?
: So those are the Dragonars… the Giganos new weapons.
: Their pilots must be elite soldiers, so I think I’ll take in their combat data to study later… Though I don’t think Hugo cares about any of that.
: If you’ve the time to worry about others’ data, then you’d be better off keeping a closer eye on our engine.
: I-I know that!
: (Hrm… Am I that much of a bother to him?)
: (We’ll be at a disadvantage if we allow this to drag on…)
: All troops, prioritize immobilizing their group – focus fire on the Nahel Argama.

Ask me about being the best dad ever.
Maillot’s groupies will, indeed, make a beeline for the Argama while the boss man tries to take out the Dragonars. Let’s have both groups converge to simplify things.

Judau leads the charge.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tf9noNbopzs
I finally found Arado!

Roux and Elle wreck another one.

And let’s see if I can’t get Hugo enough morale to use his strongest weapon.

…I’m still not used to accounting for that shield reduction.
Puru Two finishes the job.

Misato sees the wind turning in our favor after the Argama’s intervention… but where did Kaji go? He’s taking off on a small plane, saying he’s got stuff to deliver quick-like.
So, he bids her farewell and runs along, leaving a fuming Misato behind.

Just to show it off, I go and decided to clip the EVA-02’s umbilical cord. Now Asuka is no longer limited in movement range but will, as Misato said, run out of gas in three turns.
We gotta hurry!

With that in mind, it’s time for Werner to go.

: I see you three are still a bunch of Blue Hawk fanboys, eh?
: Bastard! You’ll pay for insulting us and the Captain with your life!

Werner being damaged by Light: “Attacking with the D3? Have you lost your mind?”
Jerk!

: However much firepower you have, I need but close the distance!
: Sorry, bud, but I’m gonna clip your wings way before you pull that off!

And then Kaine finishes the job.

Off goes Werner, swearing to be victorious NEXT TIME.

Enemy Phase!

As per Maillot’s orders, Dan and Karl go for the Argama and Roux. The trade goes highly in my favor.

Maillot himself seems to prioritize Kaine.

: Show me how much you’ve improved, Dragonar pilot!
: I’ve had enough with you hounding us all over the place! Give it up already!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZDv0KRhptg
And here’s the RNG double whammy: a low % hit connects AND crits!
Reset! :argh:

Oh, and Maillot took Werner’s item as well. I should have seen that coming…

Player Phase!

We’ll use Kaine to bait him closer; meanwhile, his two cronies need to go.

: Coming down all the way to the surface just to chase us? I gotta tip my hat to you folks.
: And it’s all because you refuse to surrender the Dragonars!

How about I surrender some bullets instead?

Karl ejects, crying out to Maillot.

Just a wee bit more morale for Hugo.

CAPTAAAAAAAAIN!!

Asuka (who’s only just now reaching the area) and the Dragonar guys all had stuff to say to these three. Here’s what we missed:

: Heh, what’s up, groupie? Came here to get your rear end kicked?
: Silence! I’ll see that that was the last bit of sass you’ll ever give anyone!

--

: You guys are as stubborn as a mule. Enough already!
: Shut your mouth! We only came here because you insisted on standing against us and the Captain!

--

: You’re the cornerstone of the D Weapons! Victory’ll be ours once you’re gone!
: Very well put, “ace”. Still, that’s all the more reason why I can’t let myself be taken out!

--

: I’ve no time for the Hawk’s little chicks!
: What?! She’s treating us like were novices?!

--

: We, of the Practice Squad, have been hand-picked as the best! It’s impossible for us to be defeated!
: That’s fine. I’ll just have to make that impossibility a reality!

--

: I’ll show you just how much of an advantage aerial attacks have when in Earth’s atmosphere!
: I don’t need to fly to swat down some bugs!

Karl drops a Booster, which Hugo’s picked up.

Fast forward a turn getting everyone in position and Maillot failing to connect against Kaine.
Here we go!

: This is the Evangelion? It wouldn’t be a bad idea to see just how strong it is…
: I don’t care if you’re the Giganos’ Hawk or Kite, you better not think you’re safe from me just because you’re flying!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCb4iSXxjSw
Here’s Asuka’s rifle and, more importantly, the A.T. Field laughing in the face of Maillot’s Tri-Reamed Multi Discharger.

: He’s the Giganos’ top ace, alright… That doesn’t mean I’m letting him bring me down, though!
: You’ve a fine spirit! However, you’ll see that it does not compensate the difference in our strength!

: This pilot… he’s not a Newtype but he’s still very good…!
: You’ve touched my mind, hm? But it is far too late – you will not escape!

: A gold MS…! That is Quattro Bajeena’s— rather, the Red Comet’s unit!
: Then I know this to be a worthy adversary!
: If I can bring down the Giganos’ ace, then that title’ll be mine! You’re going down!
: My Falguen will not fall for your idiotic aspirations!

: You’re too slow!
: H-hold on! You’re the one who’s too fast!

: His movements are…! I see I’ve found one whose skill was tempered by the fires of battle!
: Hey, I’ve just been doing what I can to survive all this mess!
: I dunno anything about this Blue Hawk business, but I’d really like if you just turned around and ran home!

: H-How is it this agile even in the atmosphere…?!
: Such is the might of the Metal Armor, pride of the Giganos! It is the blade that will crush the Federation!

: Uwah! This thing’s fast!
: This is a battlefield! If you’d complain about anything, do it for your own weakness!

: I won’t be beaten by anyone!
: What?! The Federation is sending even young girls into battle?!
: Underestimate me because I’m a kid and you’ll get more way more than you bargained for!

: That unit is not something the likes of you could use!
: Come again? I’m pretty much an expert with this thing, guy!

: I’m amazed you actually try to face me with such a unit!
: Sure, it’s not the best for fighting… but it more than makes up for it in style!

: So this is the prototype Karl’s team reported…
: The movements of that Metal Armor are so different from the others…! Is it because of the mech’s specs… or is the pilot simply that skilled?!

Maillot runs off when under 30% HP, so we’ll show off the Dragonars’ combined D-Formation attack and follow it up with Hugo’s Terminus Cannon.

Maillot knows he can’t push this anymore and calls for a retreat.
Torres confirms all enemies dealt with and Bright orders everyone to stay on alert while the Argama heads over to the Aquapolis.

Maillot drops a High Performance Scope, which ups the accuracy of the equipped unit by 30.

We cut back to Kaji, who’s already made it to NERV HQ. Gendou wastes no time in asking for that new information he said he had on TERRA’s Operation Overlord.
As it turns out, Gendou’s feeling about it was right: while it may appear to be an offensive against the MU, TERRA’s main goal is to steal an OOPart (out-of-place artifact) and someone connected to the thing from them.
Does he mean the lost mechanical god? Kaji wonders aloud if the rumors he's heard about part of it being discovered already are true and Gendou says it’s his job to extract info like that from Bähbem.
Regardless, Kaji wonders why TERRA, having spent the last ten years not doing anything against Tokyo Jupiter, would do so now. Can it have something to do with the Angels’ appearance? Gendou thinks it’s only a coincidence.

Still, does Gendou think the committee will stay mum if TERRA succeeds in its theft? His answer is that both the emergence of Tokyo Jupiter and the Second Impact were predicted in advance, so the committee will simply adapt their plans accordingly and keep going.
Then, the only question will be whether to sit by and wait for the hands of the clock to turn, or to forcibly speed them up before their opponents do.

In any case, the results of Terra's operation will alter the process - much like the way the Angel’s attack on Unit 2’s fleet happened in a different location from what was predicted.
Granted, what the Angel was after is the thing in Kaji's briefcase, immobilized inside Bakelite but having already regenerated somewhat. It is very much alive.
“This is the cornerstone of the Human Instrumentality Project,” Kaji mulls.
Gendou takes a look and gets a sinister grin on his face: “Indeed… Adam, the first human.”

Saegusa reports it’ll be another hour until we arrive in the Yokosuka Harbor and Misato apologizes for all the trouble. All part of the job, Bright says. Still, she is honored to have the chance to meet the captain of the White Base but Bright says that’s all in the past.
Misato is curious as to where Amuro Ray could be but he’s currently away, tackling a different assignment. A shame but the convo is interrupted when Misumaru sends in another call.
The man sees that we’ve successfully rendezvoused with the D Weapons. Misato sneaks a peek at the commander of the Space Corps, remembering rumors of how this powerful man is said to have ties with Nergal Heavy Industries since even before the Lizard War.
Misumaru gets to the point: he’s just received an official request from Shirou Watari, TERRA’ director, to have the Nahel Argama team participate in Operation Overlord. This strikes neither of them as a surprise, really.

Details will be received from TERRA’s commander, Jin Kunugi, but it seems our job will be to provide support to the fighters who’ll be breaking into Tokyo Jupiter. We won’t need to traverse into the barrier ourselves. But, then, Douglas asks what’ll happen to the mission to transport the D Weapons to Chongqing?
That will need to be postponed until after Operation Overlord and, even then, said mission may further change depending on the result. And that’s not even taking into consideration these new aliens that have been showing up around Japan.

Delays were expected even before but, now, the absolute priority is Operation Overlord. Besides, from what Misumaru’s heard, the Federation is still getting things online and will need time before starting mass-production (Of the Dragonars, Misato wonders).
Douglas sees where this is going: the brass wants them out in the field, drawing the Giganos attention and buying them time to get everything ready. Indeed, and Bright sees a parallel with the One Year War.
Misumaru ponders how the Federation has been having many problems lately: the war with Neo Zeon and the Baamians left many chinks in the Space Corps’ armor, allowing the Giganos to initiate their campaign on Earth; meanwhile, the surface army’s reputation is in tatters face the Angel attacks. As such, Operation Overlord NEEDS to succeed.

Bright understands and sees that this is why the civilian Super Robots are being sent here – they’re just as experienced as Bright’s own men and women and GHQ is expecting a lot from everyone involved. Misamaru, for one, wishes they didn’t have to foist all these issues onto the Gundam and Super Robots as it strikes him as treating us like a bunch of handymen.
Of course, Bright is already used to having crises foisted on him and his crew.

Still, Misumaru is working on getting us some additional help by way of an apology: he’s put in a request for the folks at GEAR to support us.
Bright has heard of them, a research institution dedicated to developing defense systems to safeguard the Earth Sphere from alien invaders. He thought it had no forces of its own but Misumaru says that’s just how it appears on the surface. Regardless, we’ll have to ask GEAR’s Chief Shibuya for more info on that.
Between NERV, TERRA and GEAR, Bright sees that things are getting quite complicated and, inwardly, Misato is very impressed that Misumaru managed to get those guys considering cooperating with us. The rumors weren’t exaggerating his prowess, she sees.
Either way, they’re still getting things set up with GEAR but, if it goes through, they should be sending us some people soon.

And what about the EVA-02 and Cerberus? The EVA will still need to be delivered to the Yokosuka Harbor before the Argama gets in touch with TERRA, lest Misato and NERV give him crap (she thanks him for the consideration). As for the Cerberus, the army’s decided to keep it working here. Though it IS a valuable prototype, it seems they want it to gather more combat data.
With that done, Bright sets a course to Yokosuka and, then, they’ll meet with TERRA’s carrier: the Lydia Litvyak.

Over by the hanger, everyone’s expectations are dashed as they meet the Dragonar/Gundam pilots. Roux didn’t expect them to be a bunch of kids about their age.
Tap feels the same way, finding out that the Gundams, known for wrecking 50 Zakus with one swing of a hammer and killing 120 Doms in 3 minutes, have children as their pilots.
“Aah? Judau, can Gundams really do that?” Puru asks. “No, those stories are blown WAY out of proportion,” he answers. Still, Light figures they shouldn’t be too surprised as Amuro Ray was 15-16 years old when he piloted the very first one.
Kaine is all for getting along with his peers and exchange hearty handshakes with Judau.
Amid all the mirth, however, Aqua is strangely quiet. Hugo asks if the Dragonar pilots didn’t fit her mental image? They didn’t but what about Hugo? He says he was about their age when he first took the field, so it didn’t come as a surprise.

Light cuts in right then, eager to meet to meet the Cerberus pilots – especially Aqua.
Once introductions are done, Hugo admits that he was pretty impressed while watching them fight out there. He wouldn’t have expected fresh soldiers like them to be that good. Kaine and co thank him for the confidence boost and the guy’s praise extends to Judau and friends too. They have certainly shown that they made it this far due to their skill.
But never mind all that, what Kaine wants to know is what’s up with Aqua’s suit. “And there it is…” she groans inwardly and Roux explains that she needs it to manage her unit. “Uh-huh… Guess the Federation Army’s pretty stylish; Hugo’s clothes are a bit normal in comparison, though,” Tap quips.
Aqua seems a bit pensive at that “normal” bit but, regardless, it’s pretty obvious to Hugo that the local men have absolutely no problem with her getup. That doesn’t put Aqua at ease, of course.
When Hugo asks about Asuka, however, Kaine says she’s with Misato at the carrier – they’ll be leaving at Yokosuka. And, on that subject, Aqua wants to know how old the girl is.

Light heard she's fourteen and Aqua is gobsmacked. While she panics at another young pilot, Torres phones in and warns that the Super Robots are coming aboard – our new collaborators.
Puru is super excited to see a pair of UFOs flying in and Judau wonders if we’ve some Baam folks here. Next to them, Light sees a red robot: the famous Getter Robo. Kaine doesn’t know, so he tells of how it fought a bunch of lizards who sought to conquer the surface. Not Jovian Lizards, mind, but Dinosaurs.

Benkei and Hayato walk over, with Benkei impressed at how large the Nahel Argama is. Of course, it has to be if their bot is going to fit in. Kouji’s with them and Tap immediately recognizes the Mazinger’s pilot.
Kouji’s become a pretty famous guy as images of him fighting Dr. Hell and the Mycenae circulated the news but that also applies to the Getter team. If anything, Hayato hopes that staying here will get them all some much needed time away from the pains of fame.
Roux sees that they all seem to be around their age too, as Aqua mumbles nearby. Time for some introductions and when Kouji says he’s piloting the TFO, he also needs to explain to Tap that the Mazinger is currently in a museum.
He relates how he made the thing over in America and Roux likes it: the shape and color remind her of an Asshimar (Kouji isn't too keen on having it compared to a Titan mech). As for the bigger UFO, Kouji tells that it’s Duke’s.

Hayato opens introductions for the Getter Team, saying he pilots the Liger. Is that the red mech, Judau asks. No, that’s the Dragon as Benkei explains. Judau is confused, to which Michiru tells of how the Getter can interchange its parts in battle to assume three different shapes. The Liger for high-speed, ground-based combat, Benkei’s Poseidon for bench-warming action underwater and the Dragon for aerial combat.

So it’s kinda like if the Dragonars combined and switched forms to become the D-1 and D-2. Tap likes the idea of a combinable Dragonar but Light prefers three specialized machines as the realistic option. Michiru Saotome, Ryouma’s support, introduces herself just in time for the man to come over in person.
When Kouji asks, he says Daisuke is talking with our leaders right now (Ryouma will be joining him soon, too) and Kouji tells of him to the others, the pilot of the Grendizer.

: Um… Excuse me but I’d like to ask... How old is that man?
: Hmm… I’m not sure but I think he’s about twenty?
: Twenty…
: (Does… does this mean I’m the oldest one here?)

Well, Bright is older… but if you’re counting only pilots, then, yup!

Some time later, Torres confirms to Bright that the EVA-02 is already being dropped off. Meanwhile, Daisuke is filling them in on this new race of aliens bent on conquering Earth.
Douglas wonders how he knows about all this and Ryouma was actually wondering the same – Daisuke’s unit is also rather different from Kouji and Tetsuya’s Mazingers. Daisuke says he knows because his father, Dr. Umon, was investigating the UFOs. Douglas doesn’t seem convinced but also doesn’t press the issue.

Ben himself is more worried about this new alien menace showing up right on the verge of Operation Overlord and, on that matter, Bright asks if the Supers have any misgivings with helping in a federal operation. Ryouma says everyone is fine, focusing on doing what they can to help restore peace.
Douglas ponders if we’d be able to coexist with the Vegans as we did with the Baamians, prompting Daisuke to start ranting about how you cannot reason with those demons. Same thing he did on the Garmraid side.
We close off as Ryouma gets him to calm down and apologize for his outburst.

And that’s the end of the Cerberus exclusive missions. From here on out, things will be proceeding pretty much unchanged regardless of the chosen protagonist mech.
Next time we’ll wrap up things on the Garmraid side and keep going with that path.

See you all then!

They have to be, since all the Eva attacks look so very dull in comparison to everything else, save perhaps Godmars. Anyway, Asuka is just saying something along the lines of:
"LCL filling in. Starting movement. Starting the NERV terminal. Linking the plug suit. Kicking off the left-clothing (Yeah, I have no loving idea; taking off her clothing?). Syncro-start."

It makes Engrish look like Shakespeare; I wonder if the Germans would find this charming, or strangle the person responsible.

Whoops, that was a typo on the penultimate german bit. I meant to write: Ausloses von Links-Kleidung.

Does it make more sense now?

Probably meant to be Auslöse then, so: "LCL filling in. Starting movement. Starting the NERV terminal. Linking the plug suit. Releasing from the left clothes." Needless to say, still makes no drat sense. That's because the full thing is supposed to be:

"LCL Einlass. Anfang der Bewegung, bestätigt. Anfang des Nervenanschlusses, bestätigt. Anfang nächster die Herzmonitor, bestätigt. Synchro-start, nun!"

("Input LCL. Start sequence: nerve connection, confirmed; heart monitor, confirmed. Start synchronisation!")

Nerven threw me off since its also the name of the organization, spaced at just the perfectly wrong spot.

Yeah, was kinda off (and the German and English are probably off as well, honestly) but...almost close enough, I guess?

Alright, I did a bit of looking into it and what Asuka says IS something she says at some point in the series and it is, apparently, correct german (minus the umlauts).

Someone translated it as: LCL loading(/filling). Begin activation. Begin neural connection. Open input-output links. Synchro(nization) start.

If the Giganos know what NERV is, I'd think they'd also know that they would be as screwed as Earth if the Angels win.

I'm pretty sure they think NERV = just another Federation branch with unique robots. Knowing that they're there doesn't mean they know what it's for.

As for the Angels, well, we've had Earth under siege by dinosaurs, devils, underground Mycenaeans and now have UFOs. I reckon they think those are just more monsters like the rest.

this game is weird, on the one hand it's like, 'yeah, all that stuff in Impact, that happened, man it's great that we're all best buds' and then on the other you have Judau who's all 'what's a getter robo' despite presumably having hung out with each other for 99 stages of fun

unless Impact is weird and no routes have Judau or the Getter Team at the same time

I didn't say this is a direct sequel - it's a spiritual one.

Many events of Impact have happened prior to this game but they were tackled by their individual groups. That is, the Argama folks dealt solely with Zeon stuff, the Nadesico handled the Jovians, the Japanese bots dealt with their underground enemies and so on.

They knew about each others' work but weren't one united team.

As for Judau, this is only a few months after the ZZ story played out so he likely never paid attention to stuff happening in Japan.

That's a pretty neat way of modeling the EVA's limitations.

Can you have a support mech following it around to top up its EN to extend the run-time, or isn't that a thing at this point?

You can, yeah, but resupplying a unit drops the pilot's morale by 10 with each use, so it is not ideal. That said, the EN lost doesn't increase in proportion to the total EN pool, mind, so you can give the EVAs more autonomy with upgrades.

Location: Saotome Laboratory

Our folks arrive and are met with news that Musashi has passed – a worthy, manly death as Saotome tells it. When asked, Ryouma says it was his fault. Apparently, it was a Vegan that killed him. (So Musashi survived the Dinosaur Empire, only to get killed by another series. Tragic.)
Kouji can’t believe the Getter Robo could’ve been defeated and Ryouma says the responsibility of it all falls on him, the team leader; Hayato argues that Musashi did what he did in order to save him, though. Still, Saotome wants to take the blame as the commander of this operation.

He says that everyone has things they're determined to do, no matter who tries to stop them, and notes that by laying down his one life Musashi saved two others. Kouji is upset, figuring he could have prevented this if he realized what the aliens were sooner. Duke says there's no time for grief, though – the Vegans will surely come here again.
Furthermore, he adds that if we leave them to their own devices, the number of people going through this will only increase. Time to grit our teeth and organize a counteroffensive. Saotome agrees, figuring they won’t be able to repay Musashi for his sacrifice by wallowing in sorrow.

An alarm sounds right then and Michiru, Saotome’s daughter, comes over to warn that UFOs were detected approaching. Indeed, it’s the Vegan Empire just as Daisuke foresaw.
Kouji is raring to get revenge for Musashi but Daisuke tells him to stand down – his TFO will avail him not here. The guy’s pissed off by this, but Daisuke tells him that if anger guaranteed victory all our peoples' problems would already be solved. Kouji needs to calm down before doing anything.
Kouji isn’t having it, arguing that he's fought by Musashi's side many times and that there's no way in hell he'll back down from this fight. In which case, Duke knocks Kouji out cold, hoping that he won't think badly of him – letting him deploy like this would have likely cost him his life.

Hugo glares and says he hopes that doesn't extend to him and Aqua too; no, as Daisuke figures they've already got a mission they're supposed to fulfill. “Good. Because I’ve learned the hard way that I cannot entrust my fate to others,” Hugo says, and Aqua wonders what he means by that.
Daisuke will not stop him and Ryouma and Hayato also want to help in their Get Machines. Not gonna happen, as Daisuke asks them to let us handle this. Ryouma starts to protest but he cuts in, saying he also saw people very dear to him perish in front of his eyes. He knows how he feels but, for now, he wants the Getter Team to wait and prepare for his shot at the Vegan army.

Ryouma isn’t happy to just sit by and watch, so Saotome asks Michiru to call Benkei over. It’s a bit sooner than he planned but it’s time to put his secret project into action. If they’re going to avenge Musashi and play an active part in crushing the Vegan ambitions, then they must use the NEW Getter Robo!
Benkei Kurama comes in and Saotome introduces him, an assistant in his project and someone who’s been trained to work as a pilot of the new Getter Robo. Hayato bristles at him being Musashi’s replacement and ask if the doctor expects them to accept that so easily.
Saotome points out that’s what has to happen is for everyone to pick up Musashi’s dying wish and bring an end to this threat. Benkei also stands ready and willing to help in that fight, bearing within himself the love for peace that he’s inherited from Musashi. All he requires is Ryouma and Hayato’s acceptance.

Mission 2 (Super Robot Route) – The Indestructible Machine, Getter Robo

Balendos is leading the attack and commands Grendizer to show himself. Duke obliges, telling Hugo to guard the lab while he deals with the Vegans.
Hugo fires back that there are too many enemies for him to beat alone. As it goes, the best defense is a good offense, so he’s going in as well.

Mission Objective: Destroy all enemies (Balendos will retreat when under 50% HP)
Mission Failure: Any allied unit destroyed
Easy as hell. Go forth and kill; Balendos is beefy but that’s all.

Speaking of, here’s him:

Mother Barn (Balendos, Captain of the Royal Guards)
Pilot Skills:
  • Prevail L2
  • Support Attack L1
Balendos’ Voice Actor: Hidekatsu Shibata (other known works: Geese in Fatal Fury, Fuhrer Bradley in Full Metal Alchemist, Degwin Zabi in Gundam and many others)

Balendos is higher level than all our guys, meaning he''s outright stronger. We can still take him, though – just make sure to pack some defensive spirit commands to be on the safe side. His potential for damage, however, is lessened by the fact that the Mother Barn isn’t too strong.
We're at no risk of having someone destroyed by him unless we really screw up.

Hugo and Duke move forward, well out of range of anything to attack.

Enemy Phase!

And the Minifoos close in.

Player Phase!

Kouji launches right then, ready to help. Duke is surprised but he tells him that he’s not enough of a wimp to be completely knocked out after a single punch. And, for that matter, it’s also not his nature to just watch while his friends are fighting.
Duke is still ill at ease over him fighting the Vegans in the TFO but Kouji tells him that he poured his heart into making the thing; it’s part of him and, thus, Duke should have some faith in it.
Fine, Duke agrees to let him be if he’s so certain – and he apologizes for the punch. Kouji doesn’t hold a grudge, so off they go.

These Vegans need to realize that their dinky UFOs are REALLY not cutting it against Super Robots.

There’s something so satisfying about Garmraid’s attacks… maybe it’s Hugo’s VA?

Duke also moves onward and sets himself to kill all Minifoos on the left side.

Kouji starts moving in.

Enemy Phase!

And here they all come.

And that’s three kills for Duke.

Hugo also cleans house on his side.

Player Phase!

Balendos has brought two Gilgil Saucer Beasts but their armor is made of tissue paper.

Now, I like this. All those kills have given Hugo enough morale to use his strongest attack: Burning Breaker.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-ag2kkzUYU
Compared to the Terminus Cannon, it seems more love went into this one, hm?
FYI: You are required by SRW law to shout “IGNITION” along with Hugo! :black101:

The second Gilgil loses half its health to Duke.

Enemy Phase!

Might as well take the chance to showcase SPAAAACE THUNDEEEEER!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTJUKnV8aMY

Player Phase!

Balendos has had enough playing around and moves to deploy a certain monster – now we’ll share the same fate as that red robot!
What comes out of his UFO isn’t a Saucer Beast and Michiru IDs it at the thing that destroyed the old Getter and led to Musashi’s death. Balendos calls it Grangen, a demonic beast, and commands it to consign Duke and the earthlings to the depths of Hell!
Kouji and Hugo see the thing as both Musashi’s killer and the enemy’s main weapon, so it’s time to focus fire and bring it down in a hurry.

: Hold it! We’ll take care of this ourselves!
: ?!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Hwdc6BFCds

Yet another uncommon BGM for the classic shows!

: Aah, the combination was a success!
: Mach WIIIIIIING!!

*Ryouma moves closer to Granger*

: Is that…?!
: The Getter Robo?!
: It is…! This is the new Getter… Getter Dragon!
: It can’t be…! They already had a new unit ready?!
: Ryouma, Hayato, Benkei, listen well! This new Getter is ten times stronger than the old one. However, whether that will actually be brought to bear is dependent on your skill!
: Roger, professor! We swear we’ll pull through with it! Ready to go, Hayato, Benkei?
: Ready!
: Aye, aye!
: Come here, monster! I’m putting an end to you – for Musashi!

Getter Dragon (Ryouma Nagare)
Pilot Skills:
  • Prevail L1
  • Sword Cut L1
  • Unyielding Spirit - +2 morale when taking damage from an enemy (excluding MAPWs)
Spirit Commands:
  • Strike (15)
  • Invincible (10)
Mech Features:
  • Transform
  • Open Get – when over 125 morale, 30% chance to outright dodge an incoming attack
Ryouma’s Voice Actor: Akira Kamiya (other know works: Kenshiro, Roy Fokker, Kazuya, Akira, Sanshiro, Roll Kran and more, more and more. If you’ve played an SRW game, there is a nigh-certain chance you’ve ran into one of his characters.)

Getter Liger (Hayato Jin)
Pilot Skills:
  • Prevail L1
  • Counter L1
  • Support Attack L1
Spirit Commands:
  • Alert (10)
  • Accelerate (5)
Mech Features:
  • Transform
  • Open Get
  • Mach Special – when over 130 morale, 50% chance to outright dodge an incoming attack
Hayato’s Voice Actor: Keaton Yamada (other known works: Juuzou in Combattler, 004 in Cyborg 009, Alex Cazerne in LoGH and several more)

Getter Poseidon (Benkei Kurama)
Pilot Skills:
  • Prevail L1
  • Support Defense L1
  • Guard – when over 130 morale, take 20% less damage
Spirit Commands:
  • Guts (40)
  • Spirit (40) – morale +10
Mech Features:
  • Transform
  • Open Get
Benkei’s Voice Actor: Jouji Yanami (other know works: Clemente in Tales of Destiny!, Kaiou-sama in DBZ, Yumi and Umon in Mazinger/Grendizer stuff and many more)

The classic combined robot is pretty good, though not without flaws. Getter Dragon is the boss killer of the three, with the biggest offensive power by far. On the flip side, it’s range is HORRIBLE (all but his weakest attack can only be used at point blank, holy poo poo), it drinks EN like a motherfucker and it can’t take a hit. Ryouma’s a suitably offense-focused pilot and will earn morale pretty quickly, though you should be wary of letting the Dragon take a lot of hits.
The Liger is dodgy as all hell, especially once its morale gets going (it might well be untouchable with both Open Get and Mach Special running). It’s range is a bit better than the Dragon and its attacks are rather cheap, so this is your recommended mook-hunting form.
Benkei is the tanky guy and the only one that can do jack against underwater enemies. His range is also the best of the three but that’s only for his pre-movement attack. This is usually the least useful form but keep it in mind if you’re dealing with water.

With that, Hugo takes a step forward and gets to work on the Grangen. The thing’s got a decent amount of HP but we’ve three high-powered Super Robots staring it down.

Duke whacks another 3.2k HP off it and Ryouma moves steps up to the plate.

: Musashi…! We’ll be putting your spirit to rest!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJ-Ch7OByBs
The Grangen’s :catstare: face really cracks me up.

Enemy Phase!

Balendos decides to go after Duke, of course. I’ll just defend.

: Duke Fleed! You were carrying on your pitiful life in this remote planet, eh? What a surprise!
: You’re…!
: Balendos, captain of King Vega’s royal guard! Let that name burn into your mind as I end your life!
: Silence! I will not surrender this beautiful world to you demons!

We’re still good.

And there’s Open Get triggering, before Ryouma shaves away another chunk of the Grangen’s HP.

Player Phase!

Let’s wrap this up.

: This is my tribute to you, Musashi…! Watch as I send this monster straight to Hell!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5qqrDl-hdE
This attack is the same, regardless of who starts it.

Ryouma already gets an extra Prevail level out of this. The Grangen drops a Super Alloy Z, which boosts HP by 1000 and armor by 150.

Destroy the Grangen and Balendos is appalled. Without a choice, he backs away.
With all enemies dead, the Getter Team cheers for their victory over Musashi’s killer. And with the Getter reborn, Ryouma tells him to rest in peace.

Here’s the rest of the dialogues we missed. Grangen had nothing to drop, so I didn’t care to waste my time with him.

-Vs. Balendos-
: They’ll likely back off if we bring down this guy…! Keep the output steady, Aqua!
: I’m on it!

--

: Fool! Do you actually think that pitiful UFO can stand up to a Motherbarn?!
: Zip it! That’s just a small handicap I’m giving you!

--

: You better grit your teeth for this…!
: Musashi gave his life to protect this world…
: And you will not put a single finger on it so as long we and the Getter Robo are around!

-Vs. Grangen-
: You… What you’ve done is unforgivable! You killed Musashi and, so, I’m killing you right now!

--

: Take a look, Musashi! We’ll destroy your killer ourselves!

Saotome is also talking to Musashi’s spirit, telling him of how everyone’s teamwork has defeated that monster. Michiru points out the first star showing up in the night sky and Hayato figures that’s Musashi’s way of cheering for us now.
Ryouma agrees, saying the guy was far more of a romantic than his appearance would imply. Benkei, in turn, promises to take up his mantle. “And, so,” Kouji adds, “watch over our new battles from up there.”
Daisuke tells them to stand proud, as they all swear this oath to Musashi. Ryouma is all for it, and promises to Musashi that they’ll always remember him as they fight on to protect this beloved world.

Over by NERV HQ, we get pretty much a retelling of the other path: the EVA-02 being brought over aboard the Argama, Kaji skipping out halfway through (messing with Misato) and the mess with the Giganos.
They also talk about the Angel attack and end with Kaji relating his info on Operation Overlord before delivering his Adam-in-a-box.

At the Nahel Argama, Torres relates that the EVA-02 is already getting dropped off and Misato thanks him for his help. All part of the job, Bright says, to which she then asks him to send her regards to the Gundam and Dragonar team for having Asuka’s back. With that, she leaves.
That’s one job taken care of and next is transporting the D Weapons. Or not, as Misumaru’s transmission comes in and it is the exact same as the other path. One small bit added is Misumaru clarifying that the new squad that’s being formed with the soon-to-arrive Japanese Super Robots will have the freedom to act independently and will answer only to him.

Over by the hangar, the Argama kids are getting the news of the incoming Super Robots. Mondo’s never heard of the term, so Roux says it’s a robot like Mazinger and Getter… though Elle doesn’t know what a Getter is.
Roux tells of their recent battles against the Dinosaur Empire and chides them for not caring to keep up to date with what’s going on across the world. Beecha grumbles that they hadn’t the time to do any of that, what with being dragged into this job so soon after dealing with Haman. Judau tells him not to complain as they all agreed to help Bright until the Giganos are dealt with; of course, now that we’ve descended on Earth, that’ll mean more enemies to fight.
Judau knows but says it is what it is – he’ll keep on trucking along in order to pull the plug on all this fighting. It’s not his thing to stay passive face all that.
Beecha sighs at his never-say-die attitude but, then again, it was exactly that what allowed him to save the Purus.

Following this, the Supers come in and things go the way of the previous mission. Including the introduction of the Dragonar team and their units.
Of note is Aqua wondering why there are so many kids hitching a ride aboard the ship... and is promptly blown away when Judau, Beecha and the others reveal themselves to be MS pilots - Gundam pilots, even. Aqua knows that only aces get to pilot Gundams, though Hugo counters with the fact that Amuro Ray piloted the very first Gundam at age 15-16, so it's not that unusual. Hell, Hugo himself first took to the field a little bit older than them.
And, to top it off, there are Kouji and the Getter Team which are also teenagers. Aqua still groans over being the oldest pilot around.

And there’s also Duke’s convo with the captains and his rant when Douglas wonders if we could achieve peace with the Vegans like we did with the Baamians.

Location: Skull Moon Base

Gandal has heard of Balendos’ retreat against the earthlings and is very disappointed with the captain of the royal guard. The guy insists he was merely observing and will truly finish the job next time (Gandal doesn’t buy it).
Bracky asks Gandal what they should do about the Giganos – their base is on the other side of the Moon. He wants them left alone for now. Thanks to the cloaking shield, they haven’t noticed the Skull Moon Base’s presence yet – even if they have, it’d be foolish of them to fight a war on two fronts.

The plan is to use them as a shield for the Vegans' own plans, letting the humans deplete each other. Two birds with one stone. In the meantime, the Vegans will concentrate on building their secret forward base in Japan in preparation for their global conquest.
Bracky remembers hearing that there’s this odd, Jupiter-like barrier in said Japan and is a bit queasy – that is precisely why Gandal says Japan in perfect for them. The Earthlings are all focused on that barrier and will not notice them constructing their base. Meanwhile, he wants Bracky to get to work planning their next attack.

Location: TERRA HQ

Kunugi, TERRA’s commander of military operations, welcomes Bright to the aircraft carrier Lydia Litvyak. Souichi (the younger one), the second-in-command of TERRA, is also on the scene and ready to detail Operation Overlord.
Fifteen years ago, the aliens known as the MU suddenly showed up above Tokyo in a humongous fortress. They didn't actually do much, nor did they respond to attempts by the Earthlings to hail them. The Federation Army finally lost patience and attacked, touching off the First MU War. The MU responded with superweapons called Dolems and, in the span of a single day, tens of thousands of people across the world were killed.

Bright remembers it well, though it was before he joined the army. The Federation prepared for all-out war, but the MU formed Tokyo Jupiter and shut themselves inside it. This impassable dome, whose exterior resembles the surface of Jupiter (thus, it is the Jupiter within Tokyo – Tokyo Jupiter), extends for several tens of kilometers around Haneda Airport.
The MU haven’t done anything outside since it first emerged, though there are some who suggest a connection between their arrival and the Second Impact happening shortly after. All speculation, mind.
Regardless, there were about twenty three million Tokyo denizens inside the dome’s area and their status was unknown… until recently.

TERRA’s research has advanced enough and they’ve developed a way to breach the previously unbreachable barrier: the Trans-Dimension Drive Unit (TDDU). With it, they were able to send units to scout out the inside of Tokyo Jupiter and, thus, decided to do Operation Overlord.
TERRA's fighter jets will do the actual work inside, and Kunugi wants Bright to guard the space outside the barrier... which really means reacting to any Dolems that should emerge from within. Bright agrees to get the operational details later and departs.
As he goes, Souichi lets out a sigh of relief; Kunugi asks if he was nervous. “Of course. How could I not be, when I was going to speak directly to THE Bright Noa, captain of the White Base? Were I not on duty, I would have asked for an autograph,” he says.

Kunugi is impressed too, noting that Bright's instincts seem very sharp – he wouldn’t be captaining a Gundam-loaded ship if not, of course. And adding the Japanese Supers to his team will make for an even mightier force, Souichi thinks.
Still, said team is meant as no more than a distraction for what they’re truly after and Kunugi figures Bright is well aware of that. They’re all distractions, as a matter of fact, which is why the next operation NEEDS to be successful. Souichi is confident that Cpt. Haruka Shitou will pull through.

Aqua and Benkei are very impressed with this mighty carrier, even bigger than the Aquapolis (it can’t fly like the Argama, though). Inwardly, Duke is still a bit uncertain whether all this firepower would still be enough to face the Vegans if they attacked in earnest.
Their attention is dragged over to the Dragonar folks having a shouting match with Ben. Seems like they have just gotten the memo that they’ll also be participating in Operation Overlord and Kaine is NOT happy – this isn’t what he signed up for.
Still, those are the orders and, as soldiers, Ben says they’ll have to comply. What about cancelling their registration on the Dragonars, then?! That’ll have to wait until they get to Chongqing – later.

As Kaine balks, Kouji and Duke ask what’s this about “cancelling their registration”? Light gives them the rundown: when they first flew the Dragonars, they got registered as the pilots and the only way to undo that is with some special systems that’re only in the Chongqing base.
Until that’s done, no one else can fly the things; the combat data within is also locked away. Makes sense to Kouji that they have all these safeties in place as these ARE highly classified mechs. More insight he gained in his studies in the US.

Either way, Kaine and company’s mission was to take these mechs that were registered to them and bring them, and their data, over to Chongqing. That was what they signed up for, so being asked to take part in this operation goes way beyond the original contract.
Daisuke understands how he feels but that’s the situation the world is in now. Kaine gets that he’s being selfish as hell to wanna bail on this with the Giganos, Vegans and MU prowling about… still, he’s not happy.
Ben points out that kids younger than him are working their asses off on the Nahel Argama and Light agrees, saying they can’t put on a bad show for them. It’s their job as the older guys!
Kaine’s actually surprised that he’s no problem with this and while Light IS getting fed with the army’s way of doing things, he knows complaining won’t help. All they can do is stay alive until they reach Chongqing. Kaine still grumbles, and Light has a laugh, having figured he was made of sturdier stuff than this.

Location: Tokyo Jupiter

We open up with Ayato at the start of a new day – signs point it’ll be another normal day.
Regardless, he shouldn’t keep Mamoru and Hiroko waiting.

As he walks down the road, he seemingly feels something but sees nothing. Is he imagining things? Hiroko and Mamoru call out to him and ask why he’s just standing there; Ayato say he’s got the feeling that he’s being watched ever since he left home.
Hiroko praises him for being so popular that he’s apparently got a stalker, then. Or maybe he’s just paranoid? Mamoru cuts in and tells them both to hurry – they’ve mock tests today. Ayato notices that he’s carrying a certain book around; what is he studying? English… not that any English-speaking country exists anymore.
Hiroko chides him that studying on the verge of the test won’t do much but Mamoru believes in working hard until the very last second. Ayato is more relaxed but, as Hiroko knows, he can put in some effort when the mood strikes him – in particular, his paintings.

The conversation is cut short when an airplane flights overhead. They’ve been going back and forth all morning, Mamoru says. Hiroko read in a magazine that there’s fear of another alien invasion and the rumors as to what the identity of said attackers are as varied as they come: Guests, Aerogaters, Shadow Mirrors, Ruina, Einsts… (The PSP version lists: Inspectors, Shuras, Duminus, Fury, Zukunft…)
But the point is that due to alien invaders, the entire world outside of Tokyo went up in smoke. Could they be coming over for round two? Ayato isn’t too sure the aliens are at it again, as nothing’s happened since the Tokyo battle and that was a whole THREE years ago. It, somehow, feels longer than that to Hiroko.

That’s not important now, as one of the planes crashes nearby.
An explosion rocks the town and the kids wonder if another invasion is really happening. Regardless, Ayato says they need to run away from here. That is until Ayato hears someone singing nearby. Hiroko hasn’t heard anything but he’s sure he heard it and runs after the source, telling her to stay with Mamoru.

Ayato looks around and finds a girl singing. He tries warning that it’s dangerous here but, soon after, recognizes her: Mishima...Reika.
They seem to know each other and are very surprised to have just run into each other like this. Still, whatever the reason this happened, he figures the more, the merrier… but, then, what was she doing here?
Before he gets an answer, Reika speaks of hearing a song – a Dolem – and runs off.

Elsewhere, two nondescript secret agent types are conferring about how the first defense line has been breached – Maya is going to have “that” deployed.
Time is of the essence, then, so the agents move to locate their target – it should still be nearby.

Miwa (young girl) confirms that half of the invading crafts have already been eliminated and Kuki asks Maya (older woman) if it’s really alright sending Allegretto out. Indeed, Maya says it’ll be fine – no awakening will happen without “Ollin”. And even if it did, it wouldn’t be able to sing.
What if THAT mechanical god from the outside world – Mu’s Guardian – were to appear? “That’d be no problem either,” says Maya. “The Star of La Mu shines no more.”
Kuki seems apprehensive and Miwa reports that said Ollin has been spotted and Maya orders to have him brought to the temple.

Ayato has followed Reika towards something of an underground passage but, before he can get his bearings, those agents come to pick him up – his mother summons him.
They say there’s no time to explain and, when Ayato still wants to know what’s going on, pull a gun on him. Before they drag him away, however, someone jumps out of the shadows and knocks out both men – from the fresh wounds on their faces, Ayato sees that the agents’ blood is blue!

Ayato turns to his savior and asks who it is: “Oh, right… Just think of me as a do-gooder, yes?” Haruka says. Ayato is confused and she figures he at least could thank her for saving him – he does.
Haruka needs only take a look at his face to see that he’s curious as to why the blood of those men had such a color: “I’ll tell you… IF you come with me. And not just about the blue blood but about everything in this world.”
Ayato says that he's not such a little kid that he'll just go with strangers and, besides, he’s got to find his friend. Haruka sighs that that’s a shame… and moves to try and knock him out, figuring ignorance is bliss.
Before she does so, however, Reika appears out of thin air – much to their surprise. One of the agents takes this opportunity to blindside Haruka. As she reels back, Reika runs off again and Ayato goes in pursuit. “No, stop! Ayato!” Haruka calls out as he leaves.

: Reika, wait! Reika!!
: …
: Wh-what is this place?! We’re underground but I can see the sky…
: Ayato… there.
: Huh? An egg…?

: U-Urgh! My- My body’s?!

: …
: LAAAAAAAAAAAA…

: Gch! Graaah…!

: (Awaken… Ayato. Awaken.)

: Rah…Xephon…!

: Ayato, where are you?! Answer me!

: Ah! That’s--!
: The Xephon moves…?! L-Lady Maya!
: …
: Ayato…! Are you inside that thing?!
: Aah…ah…! Hah…hah…hah…hah…
: Wh-what is going on…? Aah…! What’s happening?!
: Urk! UWAAAAAAAAAAAH!

*Crash!*

: !
: L-Lady Maya!
: …
: Lady Maya, you’re hurt…!
: I’m fine.
: M-Mom…? Your blood’s…!
: (You’ve awakened, Ayato.)
: !
: (So much time has passed… So many sacrifices.)
: Huh?! What are you talking about, mom?!
: (I have waited for this: the moment where your blood would awaken.)
: ?!
: (Come, Ayato… My—)
: …
: You are…!

*Ruuumble!

: Wh-what?! From above?!

Mission 3 – The Deity Awakens

: Someone answer me! This is Bunga Mawar speaking! …drat it, am I the only one left?!

: And it’s because of her… Because of that puppet’s song!

*Ruuuuuumble!*

: What?! Reinforcements?!

: That’s… a D1 Dolem?!
: Is that what I saw just now…?
: *sings aria*
: Wh-what?!
: We’ve a quantum condensation reaction! FD phase shift increasing!
: And the Xephon’s FD phase conversion coefficient… It’s awakened…?!
: Why…? Why are you not listening to me, Ayato…?
: …
: The girl on the Xephon’s shoulder…! Is it… Ixtli…?
: …
: That’s the defense corps’ weapon…? It’s coming to attack me?!

The objective here is to destroy the Allegretto without losing anyone but the plot kicks in if Ayato takes too much damage.

Chensing Type 2 (Elvy Hadhiyat)
Pilot Skills:
  • Prevail L2
  • Support Attack L1
  • Counter L1
  • Assisted Attack L1
Spirit Commands:
  • Accelerate (5)
  • Focus (15)
  • Invincible (20)
Mech Features:
  • Resupply Module
Elvy’s Voice Actress: Yuu Sugimoto (other known works: Catherine in Gintama, Ana Cortez in Lost and some others)

That’s totally a Falken from Ace Combat – it’s just missing the nose laser!
Regardless, I like Elvy as she falls in that oh-so-common group of characters that can pull their weight but lack stopping power to be top tier. She dodges well, is accurate and he ranged stats are decent. The Chensing itself is pretty dang dodgy in itself, as you’d expect from a plane, bolstered by an S size.
The Resupply module suggests Banpresto might see her as a support unit but I reckon she can fill the bit of pint-sized harasser almost as well as the TFO. She just exchanges a bit of dodginess for higher attack power.

RahXephon (Ayato Kamina)
Pilot Skills:
  • ???
  • Prevail L2
  • Sword Cut
  • Shield Defense
Spirit Commands:
  • Strike (20)
  • Focus (10)
Mech Features:
  • Harmonic Field (when over 120 morale, reduce all incoming damage by 1500)
  • Shield
Ayato’s Voice Actor: Hiro Shimono (other known works: Takuya in Gundam Unicorn, Emile in Tales of Symphonia 2, Hades in Saint Seiya and many others)

Ooh, baby, the RahXephon is strong as hell. Not so much right now as it only has one attack but, as we get going, it’ll be one of your best Supers. And that’s not even touching upon it being the first unit to unlock the Shield + Barrier invincibility cheat code. Once Ayato’s morale reaches 120, it’s game over for anyone not packing a barrier piercing attack.
The kid himself is also a very competent pilot, though his defense is a bit on the low side; that’s likely to make up for the mechs’ own defenses but, with some mobility upgrades, the RahXephon can be made to dodge rather reliably.

Now, I’ll be moving Ayato a wee bit back so he can bait Allegretto closer to Elvy. He could take her on his own but what’s the fun in that?

Enemy Phase!

Thank you.

Player Phase!

Haruka flies over in her Aliel, relieved to see that Elvy is still in one piece.
More importantly, Elvy wants explanations as to what’s up with that weird unit that showed up. Haruka says that’ll have to wait and asks her to cover Ayato.

Aaah, one more…

Aliel (Haruka Shitou)
Pilot Skills:
  • Suppoert Attack L1
  • Support Defense L2
  • Mechanic – Increases HP restored by the repair command by 20%
  • Trust (10)
  • Focus (10)
  • Rouse (30) - +10 morale to all adjacent pilots
  • Cheer
Mech Features:
  • Repair Module
  • Resupply Module
Haruka’s Voice Actress: Aya Hisakawa (other known roles: Sailor Mercury, Mira in Godannar, Judith in Tales of Vesperia and a whole lot more)

Haruka’s the good type of support: she can keep herself alive by dodging well, comes with a small, flying unit and actually isn’t too bad on the attack. The Aliel needs a few upgrades to be really dodgy but Haruka’s command list already makes it the best pure supporter we’ve had so far.

Might as well have Elvy open the attack.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HEoUXkkhHY
And here’s Allegretto’s aria SFX.

The Aliel has some pretty good range for a support unit, though!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7XQ84SxgoQ

: Urgh…! We can’t keep going like this…!
: …
: Huh?! Reika?! How are you on this thing’s shoulder?! I thought you ran away!

: Sing, RahXephon. Sing your song – the forbidden song!
: ?!
: Sing, so that, one day, all may be united…!
: Reika…?!

*Allegretto charges in!*

: Aargh! Reika… Reika!

: She’s… she’s gone…!

: Gch…aah…!
: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!

: The Xephon’s quantum condensation field has reached immeasurable levels: 12+!
: It’s resonating with the aria…?!
: HAAAAAAH!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_eeSLLQ7jk

: Haah…haah…
: It’s…!
: Quantum field has gone dipolar! It’s merging with the boundary and forming a corridor!
: What the…! There’s a hole in the sky…!
: Is it trying to break through the barrier?!
: !
: Elvy, we need to get out! Right now!
: R-roger!

: The Xephon’s transposed the barrier.
: What?! It got outside?! With Ollin…?! This is a disaster…
: …You may go, Ayato. I know you will return to my side… Along with Ixtli…

Second part of this mission will be up in a couple of days!

As for the favorite-game conversation, I tend to prefer the OG games to the mainline ones, but my favorites in the mainline games are the ones that mess around with the plot a bit more. My favorite is probably SRW 64, which actually had a branching plot as you played (as opposed to just splitting the team up and having you pick which one to follow). One branch has you joining OZ and helping Treize overthrow the Earth Sphere Alliance. (Also there's Giant Robo.)

SRW D opens with Char being victorious in Char's Counterattack, after which Bright and company join forces with him to try to make something out of the aftermath.

I wouldn't go so far as to say Char won in D, considering Axis never really fell onto Earth - the Ruina just phased the whole planet away before the drop succeeded. I haven't played that game yet but I imagine that made for a very awkward moment where Char, Amuro and Bright just sat there going "...Now what?".

And I reckon I oughta take a look at 64 at some point. I've always heard of so many interesting events that played out there (and also how that Soulgain-esque bot has "Getter 1 range" syndrome).

Ask me about being the best dad ever.
Excuse the mouse cursor in some of these pictures - IrfanView decided to change back a few settings.

Outside, our people are staring at Tokyo Jupiter and there hasn’t been any activity or information from TERRA’s folks. Ryouma hopes the troops they sent inside are doing alright but we can only speculate.
Kouji expected this raid to be turn into a huge, booming battle but, by the looks of things, that’s not gonna happen. Still, Duke tells him to keep his guard up as we’ve no idea what might be going on inside.
Beecha is bored with all this but Mondo tells him that us not having to fight is a good thing. Sure, but he wanted to check out how strong those MU Dolems things are. Elle warns him that the things wrecked an entire city around the time they were born. And Beecha isn’t about to let them do it again; if we’re gonna be fighting them sooner or later, he wants to know more about the things before it comes to that.

As Light praises Beecha’s manliness, Judau is staring right at Tokyo Jupiter. It really does look a lot like the real thing.
Roux figures he’d know, considering his old wish of visiting the place after the mess with Haman was finished (before he was dragged into this).
When Puru asks, Puru Two says the trip to Jupiter would take about three years. The girl is outraged by the thought of spending all that time without seeing Judau and yells that she’ll be going with him. Puru Two complains that she’s being selfish but Puru turns to her and asks if she wouldn’t want to come along too? “W-well… sure but…”

Tap laughs at how popular the kid is and, while Judau flushes, Kouji says the trip might not take that long. Once the Hisago Plan’s Boson Jump network is up and running, travel time to Jupiter will be drastically reduced. Puru’s still going, though.
Aqua is impressed that they can be this relaxed during an operation, and Hugo tells her that she could stand to learn from that. “Yeah, yeah… I’m just a rookie co-pilot, after all,” she grumbles. Hugo’s in the process of telling her to stop pouting when he, and Torres, detect something approaching at very high speed.
And it’s not coming from Tokyo Jupiter, meaning it’s not the MU…

: Ah! That’s…!
: The Medius!
: Is here good enough?
: Yes.
: And the Nahel Argama team is also around. That’s two birds with one stone, even. Let me handle them.
: …As you wish.
: Heh… Is your heart not in this?
: …All I want is to show Tokyo Jupiter – and what’ll emerge from it – to AI1.
: Whatever that is, I don’t care. I only need the Medius to surpass that monster.
: And it’s for that reason that we came to this place.
: What are they doing here?!
: They’re not running like before…!
: I’m going in. Start collecting data.
: Understood.
: Cpt. Bright, permission to capture the Medius!
: Permission granted. All other units, hold position and keep an eye on our surroundings!

As he said, only Hugo can actually move to engage the Medius. We still only need to reduce its HP, though, so it’ll be fine. Mind, he can’t get in range to attack at this point.
Before we start, though, we had a new unit added inbetween missions and the game didn’t even see fit to tell us about it:

Getter Q (Michiru Saotome)
Pilot Skills:
  • Sword Cut L1
  • Support Defense L1
  • SP Regen – restores 10 SP at the start of every turn
Spirit Commands:
  • Accelerate (5)
  • Focus (15)
  • Trust (30)
Mech Features:
  • Repair Module
Michiru’s Voice Actress: Rihoko Yoshida (other known works: Miwa in Jeeg, Lisa in Danguard Ace, Storm in the X-Men cartoon (is the OP playing in your head right now? It should) and some others)

Well, this is a rare sight, ain’t it? I can’t remember any other game where Michiru gets her Getter Q instead of the Lady Command. Addendum: EclecticTastes says it was in A, too.
The switch gives her more stopping power but, in exchange, she can no longer fly and the Getter Q isn’t very resilient. What does help, however, is that she has a combined attack with Ryouma which is pretty powerful and has 1-4 range (Getter Dragon’s longest reaching attack).
Natural SP Regen is excellent on a support, though Michiru’s a rather poor pilot. All in all, she has enough stuff going that you could probably find a spot for her in your early-to-midgame team but, later on, she’ll fall behind.

Enemy Phase!

Here they come.

: Who the hell’s piloting this thing?! Tell me!
: (Hmhmhm… You’re better off not knowing.)
: Why won’t you say anything?!
: Hugo, in that case—
: I know! We’ll bring it back, either in one piece or hundreds!

Ooh, lucky.

: (The Medius’ movements are a bit different from before…? Still, the basis of it is…)
: (Seems like you’re done breaking in that mech. But the real question is whether your body can actually withstand using it.)

Player Phase!

Now we’re in range and Hugo pays the Medius back with a big crit.

: !!
: He just regenerated every bit of damage he took!
: Is that the Lazmunanium?! But how can it act this quickly?!
: It shouldn’t, that’s what… (MXP version: Yeah, the thing wasn't even working right during that last test.)
: …What just happened there?
: That was the power of the Lazmunanium… rather, of AI1.
: What…?
: (It can influence the Lazmunanium’s regeneration rate? Is that what she’s getting at?)
: (None of this was detailed in the Medius’ spec notes.)
: Oh, yes, AI1. You want to see? Please do – this will all be very educational to you.
: Hrm? The unit isn’t moving…! What’re you doing?
: AI1 wants to see the one emerging from the other side of the barrier.
: And it took over the Medius’ controls for that?
: Yes… so can you please indulge the child for a moment?
: Don’t be ridiculous. There is a very simple word for those who just sit around in the battlefield: easy prey.
: Give me the controls back right now. I trust you don’t want this to be your grave either?
: …

*The Medius turns towards the barrier*

: The hell? That bot’s just started looking at Tokyo Jupiter.
: Facing away from the enemy during an ongoing battle… confident, aren’t we?
: But there’s something odd about its bearing…
: Odd how?
: This goes beyond merely dropping one’s guard… it’s as though the robot itself is looking at Tokyo Jupiter.
: The Medius itself is looking at it…?
: Hugo! Now’s our chance!
: Urk?!
: Hugo?!
: Gck, rrgh…!
: What’s wrong?!

MX Version:

: (This can’t be happening…! The medicine couldn’t have worn off already…!)
: Hugo! What’s going on?!

MXP version:

: (My hands and feet are numb...! How?! This shouldn't be happening yet...!)
: Hugo! What’s going on?!
: (The medicine's losing effectiveness...?! This has to be a sick joke! If my limbs seize up right now, we...!)
: Heey, Hugo! Get back to piloting now!
: (Urk... Is this what Zapato was talking about?!)

Common ground:

*Beep, beep!*

: What is it?!
: We’re getting a big energy spike coming from Tokyo Jupiter’s barrier!
: Is it the Dolems?! All troops, get ready!
: (Here it comes…!)

: What is THAT?!
: Is that a Dolem?
: It looks like a person…!
: More than that, it…!

*The cursor moves to Rahxephon, who screams.

: !
: Th-that bot screamed?!
: I don’t know why but it kinda feels like…!
: Yeah…! Like Akira’s Raideen…!

*The Rahxephon dashes for the map’s border and leaves.*

: Hey, it ran away!
: What was that thing…?

: Ayato, wait! Ayato!!

*Haruka chases him and leaves.*

: …Was that unit what AI1 wanted to see?
: Yes.
: What is it?
: I don’t know.
: Excuse me?
: It’s true. AI1 detected a quantum reaction with his sensors, so he told me he wanted to come here.
: (It’s interested in knowledge beyond combat data? That’s absurd. I thought it was just a regular AI to help manage the mech…)
: Regardless, we’ve done what we came here for. I recommend we withdraw.
: …Understood.

: The Medius!
: It ran off?!
: Hugo!

MX Version:

: I-I’m fine… Sorry…
: “Sorry”, huh?
: (My arms and legs are moving again… I can handle it now…!)
: The TE Engine’s output is stable. We’ve got to go after the Medius!
: Y-yeah...!

MXP Version:

: (The numbness is going away. Guess the medicine hasn't become completely ineffective...)
: Are you alright?!
: Yeah... We're going after the Medius.
: Right, we might still have time! I'll just get permission from Cpt. Bright and--

Common ground:

: Cpt. Haruka! Captain! drat it, did she go after him…?!
: Hey, isn’t that one of TERRA’s units?
: Yeah, just like the last one.
: Then, Operation Overlord was—
: I’m getting another energy spike from Tokyo Jupiter’s dome! Several, actually!
: !

: drat it! The MUs followed us?!
: Target IDed! According to TERRA’s data, these are D2 Dotems!
: The MU’s miniature weapons? All troops, open fire! Cover that friendly!
: What about us, Captain?!
: Intercepting those Dotems takes priority! Leave the pursuit of the Medius to the other platoons!
: U-Understood!
: (drat it! If I could just have moved my hands back then…!)

Nothing’s ever simple, huh? Our people are closing in, while Elvy works on whatever’s close.

: Go to hell, you damned puppets! This is for my whole team!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dR7DPagwRDs
<<Fox two, fox two!>>
Also, the Dotems are so very weak.

Enemy Phase!

Everything moves in.

Player Phase!

And now we clean them up with everyone.

: What’s with these things…? Are they machines or actual living beings…?

: Come on, you doll-lookin’ buggers! Try your hand on us since you cared to step outside Tokyo!

: What is this…? I can feel something like a consciousness coming from these units…

: ( Urgh…! I need to wrap this up in a hurry, or else…)
: Are you alright, Hugo?
: Of course I am! Just worry about the enemy!

: We’ll have a repeat of the tragedies of fifteen years ago if we don’t stop them here!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjoC57hLnH8
Yet another minor attack being used in tandem with the main weapon!

That was the last Dotem but Kouji also had stuff to say:

: drat it… Are the MU starting another attack?!

Torres confirms all Dotems dead and Elvy’s in one piece. She thanks Bright for his support and breaks the news that, other than her and Haruka, everyone else is gone.
As she leaves for TERRA’s carrier, Bright and Judau aren’t too happy with the outcome. Inwardly, Bright wonders if the true objective of Operation Overlord was the giant mech that ran off.

Location: Mutropolis

The claxons are blaring, as Higashiyama tells Mari that a massive amount of Mutron Energy is pouring from Raideen’s crag. But, how, when Akira isn’t aboard the thing?
Professor Hibiki (with the glasses), figures that this is much like when Raideen first appeared. Mari wonders if this means the Devil Empire has resurged.

Akira doesn’t think that’s possible, as he defeated Barao, the Devil Emperor himself – at the cost of his mother and Jinguuji’s lives, no less.
Just then, the energy goes away, and Hibiki suspects that Raideen is, once again, trying to warn us all of something. Akira agrees that it was positively a warning, but about what he doesn't yet know. To be on the safe side, Hibiki has Akira get ready to launch - and Mari too.

After they leave, Hibiki points out to Higashiyama that this may have something to do with what the TERRA’s Prof. Kisaragi was talking about. And given how Operation Overlord is going on right now, this hardly feels like a coincidence. Can it be that Kisaragi commissioned the development of the RMU System in anticipation of this?
Considering how insistently the Bähbem Foundation has been requesting to be allowed to study the Raideen, it’s rather clear to Hibiki that their bot must have some connection to the OOPart TERRA’s after.

Meanwhile, in Tokyo Jupiter, Maya and Miwa are getting confirmation that they managed to successfully send Dotems across the barrier and into the outside world; only natural, Kuki figures, considering that people from the outside were able to come in.
In fact, if they use TERRA’s own system, Kuki figures it’d be very possible to conquer the outside world via their Dolems. Maya wonders if "conquest" is the right word for it all but Kuki tells her that there can be no hesitation at this point. Miwa thinks that he doesn't grasp Maya's plans at all.
Regardless, Maya points out that if Kuki has actually listened to Miwa's report he should realize how much energy is required to open the passage out of Tokyo Jupiter. Furthermore, it’ll take a significant number of troops to face the forces of the outside world on equal group – sending that much out will have significant ramifications on the operations on this side.

Kuki begrudgingly agrees and Maya decides to only concentrate on recovering Ayato, whose escape she takes as her own misstep. She hadn't figured that at age 17 he was mature enough to board Xephon; saying nothing of the fact that she didn’t expect the unit itself to allow him to traverse to the outside.
Still, this might actually turn to be a fine opportunity for Ayato to develop further. If presented with the proper trials, it may speed his awakening as an Instrumentalist.

And what about TERRA? Maya expects them to be after the same thing so, with that in mind, why not “help out” a little bit?
Miwa raises the point that this could put the people synchronized with the Dolems at risk but Maya cares not about losing two or three Mulians. In fact, she’ll readily accept losing a thousand of them if need be. Miwa takes that as a sign of Maya's resolve.
Kuki reminds Maya of the Mu artifact that lies on the other side of the barrier. Does she care not about the dangers of it and the Xephon coming into contact? She sees no problem at the moment as the Conductor has yet to awaken.
Maya tells him not to forget that Ayato's awakening is the end goal, and hope, of all their plans.

Back on TERRA’s carrier, Souichi is confirming that the RahXephon’s, codenamed 5A, safely aboard. Seems that Haruka managed to guide it over and Isshiki is rather impressed – this must be fate, he figures, but won’t explain what that means when Souichi asks.
Souichi is a bit wary of Isshiki, an official of the Federation sent over to keep tabs on TERRA’s activities – he all but certain the guy’s actually an agent of the Bähbem Foundation. Either way, the guy wants to know if there have been any new discoveries on the 5A.

Nothing right now, says Souichi, which is why they’re moving it to Nirai-Kanai to have Prof. Kisaragi take a look. Well, there’s actually one thing they know: the thing’s pilot called it RahXephon. Isshiki sneers at the bot’s pilot going and giving it a name – like it’s a toy he just bought.
Regardless, the pilot has just finished being examined and Kunugi wants to have a talk with him.

Meanwhile, Ayato is a bit miffed that he needed to undergo a blood test as soon as he arrived but Haruka says it’s just a formality. He huffs that his blood is red and she’s forced to agree.
Ayato wants to know where the ship’s going and she tells it’s Nirai-Kanai. He’s heard the name: an Okinawan word meaning “the island where the gods dwell”. Haruka praises his insight but says the place has no gods and isn’t near Okinawa; rather, it’s a floating city extending from islands in the Kyushu sea, where they conduct their research on Tokyo Jupiter.
TERRA’s HQ is there and, when Ayato asks, Kunugi walks in and gives him the rundown of their mission to investigate and fight the MU. After he introduces himself, Kunugi tells the kid that an official decision regarding him hasn't come down yet; thus, his freedom of movement aboard the ship will be restricted until they arrive in Nirai-Kanai.

Oh, and before he forgets, he tells Ayato to fix the time on his watch to the correct time. Kunugi doesn’t explain what he means, only turning to Haruka and telling her to take him to the assigned room and then head to the bridge (she seems unhappy, hearing that).
He leaves, leaving Ayato a bit miffed with his attitude; Haruka says that the guy might be surly but he’s a good man. Either way, he wants to know what the guy meant with “correct time” and he remembers her saying she’d tell him about everything in this world.

What is it, then? He always thought the world outside Tokyo had been destroyed by the invaders.
Haruka asks him if he knows the population of the world. About twenty three million? Actually, it’s more like ten billion if you count the colonies. Next one, Haruka knows he’s seventeen years old, so does he know what year it is? Space Calendar 76?

Well, she tells him to take a deep breath and calm down: it’s actually the year 89. She shows him her watch, whose face is split in two to show real-world time and Tokyo time. Apparently the flow of time within Tokyo Jupiter is one sixth of real time.
Ayato calls lies but, while Haruka says that the detailed explanation for it is too complex for her to manage, it IS the truth. The battle Ayato thought resulted in the outside world’s destruction has been dubbed the MU War; Haruka tells him of what happened fifteen years ago, with their appearance over Tokyo and the people attacking out of fear when they just sat there, etc, etc.

Barely two and a half years have passed within Tokyo while it’s been fifteen for everyone else... and those years have been full of chaos. The Second Impact, the One Year War, the Lizard War and more occurred and it’s been theorized that the MU knew what was coming and, thus, hid themselves inside Tokyo Jupiter’s barrier.
Ayato asks, then, why Haruka went and took him out of there NOW if they spent fifteen years not doing anything about Tokyo? She doesn’t know why, actually, only that they ordered her to do so. He asks if his mother and his friends are still alive, inside Tokyo Jupiter, and Haruka confirms, though she’ll say no more. It’s time to get him to his room.

Along the way, they run into Elvy and Haruka immediately tells Ayato that she needs to stay behind for some girl-talk. His room is just down the corridor, so she shoos him away.
Haruka’s heard that Elvy was the only survivor of the infiltration party and is quite impressed but the woman herself isn’t here for that. She just wants a quick and straight answer for a single question and, no, it’s about when Haruka’s going to pay her back for the drink she covered the other day.
“Did you know what Operation Overlord was all about? Did my friends lose their lives for that stupid kid?” she asks.
Haruka wants to know where she heard that but Elvy demands an answer to her question. Did she know everything?
“…I guess our plans to grab Chinese food next week are about to be cancelled,” Haruka quips and earns a prompt punch from Elvy.

Ayato is checking out his new room and finds a barbershop-like pole spinning by the door. Odd to find something like this aboard an aircraft carrier but the suddenly-appearing Quon says this room was originally the infirmary. The stripes in the pole are meant to represent the red and blue blood vessels, see.
Ayato nods along as Quon starts questioning why we’ve blood vessels of both colors if humans only have red blood? Ayato ponders this, remembering her mother’s blood being blue.
He’s interrupted when Quon calls him “Ollin” and drags him away.

Later on, Haruka’s reached the bridge and wants Kunugi to explain why Ayato’s “room” is the confinement chamber for Mulians, rigged to blow up the occupants if not opened properly.
Souichi tells her that the results of the blood test came back: Ayato's nucleotides and peptides all displayed MU-phase reactions.
“But he doesn’t know anything! Let him go – please! I know he’ll work with us! And his blood is still the same color as ours, no?!” Haruka yells. Kunugi’s answer is a simple: “It is now. But someday, he’ll…”

As for our people, we’re busy looking over footage from the battle, specifically of the robot that came out of Tokyo Jupiter. Light remembers the Super Robot crew talking about it resembling something?
“Honestly, it kinda looked like Si— (this link is NSFW!)“ Kouji starts saying and Hayato warns that he might beckon aerial attacks if he finishes that sentence. When Puru asks, Kouji just says it’s just an old story of theirs. (Does that mean we can call another Akira to help with this?)

For real now, Ryouma says it was similar to the Raideen – the bot who defeated the Devil Empire, relic of the ancient Mu Empire and powered by Mutron energy. When Puru asks, Michiru says Mu was a civilization that prospered about ten thousand years ago and, eventually, sunk into the ocean following a huge natural disaster.
Beecha has a hard time imagining such an old civilization building a mech but Kouji’s ready to counter that with the fact that Dr. Hell’s mechabeasts were all ancient relics that he excavated. Elle’s starting to feel that tech from way back when is a whole lot more impressive than what we have now; Roux is forced to agree.

Ryouma even adds that Raideen’s Akira will be joining us but Higashiyama said it’ll take a wee bit longer than originally expected. Michiru wonders if something’s going on in Mutropolis.
The important part, though, is that the Japanese Super Robot crew all fought alongside Raideen before and, back then, they all felt this peculiar aura from it. The same one they felt today in the Tokyo Jupiter bot. Does that mean it’s also a relic from some super ancient civilization?

No time to wonder that, as Kaine runs in, yelling in shock. Tap wonders if he finally got a message from his sweet Linda – he didn’t and Kaine immediately sulks that she’s probably forgotten about him already.
Puru asks and Light tells of the guy’s unrequited love, only for Kaine to cut in: “You shut your mouth! It’s totally gonna be requited any day now!”
So, what was he actually yelling about? Well, it looks like the Tokyo Jupiter robot has just been taken about TERRA’s carrier! Seems like getting the thing out the barrier was the actual goal of Operation Overlord, Ryouma realizes.
Light is a bit miffed that we, and the Federal troops, were all mobilized for something like that but, on the flip side, Hayato figures the thing must hold some major secret for TERRA to pull this huge feint in order to grab it.

: Are you feeling better, Hugo?
: Yeah… Everything’s fine now.
: But what happened there? Your hands just seized up.
: Just something of a spasm, that’s all. It happens every once in a while.
: (…A spasm?)
: “That’s all?” “Once in a while”? Are you joking? The Medius got away because of you, did it not?!
: …
: And this is the first I’ve ever heard of any of this. Why didn’t you tell me before?
: Because there was no need to.
: Oh, no! You don’t get to give me that answer!
: You go on and on about how I should just let you handle all of the fighting when, actually, you’re a ticking time bomb! This is absurd!
: I don’t even know whether I should be impressed or shocked that you managed to go on piloting with your body like that!

MX Version:

: If you’ve a problem, then we can end this at any time. Just go and call it quits with the Garmraid.
: Where do you get off with that attitude, huh?! Alright, that does it – I’m not going anywhere!
: Yeah, that’s right! I’m staying right here and I’ll be hounding you until we finish our job!
: U-um… please stop fighting.
: Yeah; this is the infirmary, right?
: Ah… S-sorry.
: Will you at least let the doctor give you a full check-up?
: Thanks, but I’m fine.
: Better to be safe than sorry, don’t you think? Next time that happens, it might cost you a lot more than today.
: I… I know that.
: Why won’t you take the exam, then? You’re not going to tell us that you’re scared of needles or something, are you?
: Do I look like that much of a child to you?
: …Oh, my god. You’re way too crusty for someone younger than me.

MXP Version:

: (My body's not like this because I wanted to, alright...?)
: Aqua, I don't understand everything that's going on... but don't you think you're yelling a bit too much at him right now?
: I... was thinking the same.
: O-Oh, right... Sorry, Hugo.
: Forget about it. And it was my fault the Medius got away. I should be the one apologizing.
: ...
: Something the matter?
: No, nothing.
: (I was thinking he was way too crusty for someone younger... but maybe he's not actually like that?)
: Will you at least let the doctor give you a full check-up?
: Thanks but I’m fine.
: Better to be safe than sorry, don’t you think? Next time that happens, it might cost you a lot more than today.
: I… I know that.
: Why won’t you take the exam, then? You're not scared of needles or something, right?
: I'm way more scared of nagging old women.
: Whaa--?!
: (I take that back! He is crusty as all hell!)

Common ground:

: Then, Hugo, at least take some medicine with you.
: Thanks, but I got my own… And sorry for making you worry.

*Hugo leaves.*

: Hey! Where are you going?! Hold up!

*Off she goes.*

: …You think he’s really alright?
: He won’t let a doctor take a look, so there’s no way to tell.
: (But that symptom of his… Could it be a side effect of steroids or some painkiller?)
: (But he shouldn’t get like that unless the dosage is really high… Is he taking that much of it?)

And Misumaru’s just sent Bright our new orders: guarding Japan. Seems like the Far East command is worried about the Vegan attacks and the Dotems’ appearance.
What about delivering the D Weapons? Seems like Chongqing still isn’t ready to receive the things, so GHQ decided to leave them with Bright for a while to stall for time...

Glazius posted:

Yeah, I feel like that whole sequence was just meant to be... experienced. Understanding may or may not follow.

RahXephon keeps the spectator in as much confusion as Ayato himself... and MX adds to it by throwing Raideen into the mix. It'll make sense, eventually.

The next missions will keeps things simple and awesome, though.

Ask me about being the best dad ever.

The game allows us a choice of three missions here but this isn’t the usual route split – you’ll still have to do them all. Some events may change a wee bit depending on the order but, since they’re actually assigned a fixed number, I’ll follow Banpresto’s order.

Location: GEAR Headquarters

Chief Shibuya is having a bad day, as Meteor reports that a group of Gulfer RoBeasts has just breached the Space Corps’ last defense line. What about GEAR’s defense satellites? Aiko, the operator, says all but 13% are still active and unable to halt the enemy’s advance.
Shibuya is dumbfounded that the enemy could break through so easily, as Meteor reports the first Federation fighter squadron beginning its attack run. Shibuya doesn’t seem too hopeful.

Professor Inoue posits that the invaders are presumably after the underground laboratory - it'd be best if they contacted the Federation to get permission to use "that".
Shibuya agrees, telling Inoue to make ready while he secures permission – when it comes, "Operation D" will begin. Furthermore, he asks Aiko to call Vega immediately.

As for Kirakuni, it’s time for him to get to work and he’s more than ready.
Shibuya asks Aiko what’s the currently location of the ship Misumaru told them about, the Nahel Argama? Patrolling and, currently, about half an hour away from here – he asks her to request our help.

Location: Hoshimi Town

We find the Kusanagi family, having just moved into town. Orie asks her son, Hokuto, how he likes their new home. He hasn’t formed an opinion, what with them moving in today, but she figures it’s a nice place to live. She’s eager to start her new job as manager at a local coffee shop, too.
Hokuto at least warns her to do so carefully, as she seems to get bruised in her jobs so often. She’s such a klutz.
Orie will keep that in mind but hopes he’ll soon be making many good friends and’ll come to like this town as well; that sounds good to Hokuto. Now, is there anywhere he’d like to go today? Yes but not before they’re done unpacking everything.
How about they see the sights around town after Keisuke, the husband, comes back from work? That works for Hokuto, who wants to go check out his new school – he’ll be starting there tomorrow, after all.

At school, we find Ginga busily practicing some martial art. Seems he’s lost to his mother again yesterday and is determined to win today. “And, someday, I’ll be an awesome martial artist like Kazuya Ryuzaki and the King of Hearts!” he says.
Off he goes, until he notices Hokuto watching – he’s curious about Ginga’s “weird dance”. “It’s not a dance, idiot! It’s Shorinji Kenpo!” Hokuto apologizes, though asks if he needed to call him names?
No matter, Ginga hasn’t seen him before and asks who he’s talking to. Hokuto explains that he’s just moved over when Orie comes over, happy to see he’s already making friends. That’s interrupted, though, when she gets a page that startles her. When Hokuto asks, she just says a small problem’s come up.

Orie needs to take off for a bit, so she asks the kids to head home right now – yes, even Ginga and he doesn’t know why. As she leaves, neither Hokuto nor Ginga understand what just happened. Regardless, they exchange introductions; Ginga finds Hokuto Kusanagi to be a weird name. What’s his, then? “Ginga Izumo – as in, galaxy, see? Pretty cool name, eh?” he boasts; “Hmm… Nope, it’s weird,” Hokuto answers appropriately.
Before Ginga can get in his face, the air raid siren bellows across town – can the Giganos be attacking here? Time to head home, as they were told.

As they do so, both kids start getting miffed that the other is “following them”. Slowly it dawns on them that they’re neighbors.
But, then, they’ve a problem: Ginga’s family hasn’t returned from shopping and Hokuto’s mom is nowhere to be found. The crisis is compounded by a robot, one Ginga’s never seen before, dropping nearby and firing everywhere. And it’s coming their way!

Mission 4 – Blue Miracle

Aiko reports that one of the Gulfer’s RoBeasts has descended upon town and is indiscriminately attacking. The civilian evacuation is almost complete, but Meteor reports that the Federation’s fighter squadron is now down to half – it’s only a matter of time before more arrive here.
What about Kirakuni? Has he boarded “it” yet? No, Aiko says he’s still en route, having to reach his destination on foot as the Gulfer’s attack has made other modes of transportation out of the question. Inoue grumbles that he knew they should’ve made some underground secret passages for the pilots like the Science Fortress Lab has.
No point in grumbling about that now and, to make things worse, the Nahel Argama is still ten minutes out. Shibuya sees they’ll need to hold the line for that long as asks for Vega’s status.
She’s currently heading into the scene with her Valkyrie.

Vega’s already heading over, worried that the RoBeast is headed to a certain place. Worst case scenario, she’ll to pilot “it” by herself.
Up ahead, the monster is heading over to Hokuto and Ginga’s spot. Vega’s shocked that some people still haven’t been evacuated.

The RoBeast bombards a stadium, splash damage hitting around the kids.
In their confusion, the kids yell out in unison.

*Ruuuuumble*

: H-Huh?!
: Th-The Dendoh’s activated!
: Kirakuni’s done it!
: No, the cockpit’s empty!
: What?!
: It’s a r-r-robot?!
: A Mobile Suit…? No, it’s something else!
: Think it’s something like the Mazinger or Daimos?!
: Maybe…But I’ve never seen that one before.

*The Dendoh walks over to them.*

: Ack! It moved!
: Waaaaaaaah!!
: The Dendoh’s…!
: Let me go!!
: What’s with this thing?!
: What the hell? It’s picked up those kids!
: Kirakuni, what’s happening? Report!
: Some kids! Two of them were taken into the Dendoh’s cockpit!
: What?!
: Did you just say “kids”?!
: This is…! Ginga?!
: You’re in here, too, Hokuto?
: W-We got caught, I think…
: What now, chief?! I can’t get on!
: How did this happen?!
: Maybe… the Dendoh’s chosen those two.
: Vega…!
: We can only hope now. Give me a video feed of the cockpit, please – I’ll talk to them.
: Alright.
: drat it…! Let me out!
: (I knew it… this is that robot’s cockpit, right?)

*Transmission start*

: What?! It’s him…? Why?!

: Uwaah! What the hell! What’s going on?!
: Easy! Calm down, already! The attacks aren’t hurting us at least…!
: So what?! Why do I gotta be stuck here in the first place?!
: Hey, I don’t want to be here either! But screaming isn’t helping!
: If we don’t scream, then no one’s gonna come save us!
: Shush! I already got a huge headache without you yelling at my ear!
: Didn’t you just hear what I said, you idiot?!
: There you go, calling me an idiot again! That’s twice now!
: When did I say that, huh? You got me on record? Tell me the specific year, month, day, hour, minute and second where I said that!
: It was just a bit ago! We met today!
: Kids! Hey!
: Huh?!
: Who’s that?! Do you see us?!
: I do. You’re both inside the cockpit of the Gear Fighter Dendoh.
: Dendoh?!
: It knew it… it’s that thing’s…
: I’m certain you’re both very confused right – honestly, we all are. But now we can only rely on you two – there’s no other option.
: Rely on us for what?

: Stand up straight, both of you! Count to three, and put one foot in front of the other as you do!
: One! Two! Three!

*Dendoh takes a step forward.*

: One! Two! Three!

*Another one!*

: That’s it – just like that! Alternate your left and right feet!
[IMG]http://lpix.org/2542414/KirakuniNormal].png[/IMG]: The Dendoh’s walking…!
: Hey, this isn’t too hard…
: One! Two! Three!

: One! Two! Three!

: ?!
: Ah?!

: They… walked right past it…?
: HEEEEEEEY! Where are you going?!
: Huh? Aren’t we supposed to do this and run?

: No! The Dendoh’s a Gear Fighter! What would you use it for, if not fighting?!
: Huuuuuh?!
: You want us to fight?!
: I do. Do you see something like a handheld game in front of you?
: Yes, but…
: That’s a Gear Commander! Punch in the following code into it: Drive A once, LR twice, LL once, enter! Then plug it into the dashboard!
: OK! Hurry, Ginga!
: Errm, LL once… there!

*Beeooop!*

: Here you go!
: Ah, I see how it is! This is an installer!
: Yes, that’s right!
: And an “installer” is…?
: A device to input commands into a computer.
: Hm. It’s with it that you’ll be able to send orders to the turbines on the Dendoh’s hands and feet. The hands are A, left foot is LL…
: Don’t worry – I’ve got it figured out already!
: Um, Hokuto…
: Hey, Ginga, remember that Kenpo technique you were doing before? Try that one!
: You serious?!
: Yeah, we have to do something with that thing! If we don’t, it’ll destroy everything – including the town and its people!
: !
: We can do it! I know we’ll be fine!
: That’s right, you will!
: OK, here goes!

Aah, another of my favorite series in this game. Dendoh’s just a bundle of fun, made as both a show meant to sell toys and a love letter to Super Robot tropes.
The units are pretty dang good, too!

Valkyrie (Vega)
Pilot Skills:
  • Leadership
  • Support Attack L1
  • Support Attack L2
Spirit Commands:
  • Focus (15)
  • Fury/Direct Hit (30) – the next attack will bypass any defensive measures, like supports and barriers
  • Bless (45) – Target unit earns double money from the next battle
  • Confuse (55) – reduce all enemies’ hit rate in half for the next turn
Mech Features:
  • Water Movement – instead of sinking, this unit treats water tiles like they’re ground
Vega’s Voice Actress: Kotono Mitsuishi (Other known works: Misato, Usagi/Sailor Moon, Mai Shiranui, Rinko Iori, Murrue, SF’s Cammy and a billion more. She is everywhere.)

Combine the TFO’s untouchability, with some nice support spirits and surprising mook-hunting powers and you’ve a pretty impressive unit. Vega cannot be touched unless the RNG REALLY dislikes you because, on most enemies, their chances to hit her will be in the single digits.
Her stats are nice and her high Skill, paired with a big modifier in her weapons, makes her very likely to score crits, and she’s also incredibly accurate. The sole problem I can see is that her attacks are limited if you’re up against aerial enemies: she’ll be stuck using her missiles and they’re not post-movement. So, you either slap a Minovsky Craft on that bike, buy her Hit & Away or let others take some kills when you’re fighting mostly flying folks.
And always remember to swear your undying fealty to Kotono Mitsuishi.

Gear Fighter Dendoh (Ginga Izumo, Hokuto Kusanagi)
Pilot Skills – Ginga:
  • Prevail L2
  • Support Attack L1
  • Fighting Spirit – Starting morale +5
Pilot Skills – Hokuto:
  • Prevai L2
  • Support Defense L1]
  • Assisted Attack L1
Spirit Commands – Ginga:
  • Guts (30)
  • Strike (20)
Spirit Commands – Hokuto:

Though I last played this game ages ago, I always remember getting a ton of mileage out of the Dendoh. It’s got some very unique mechanics about it (which will see later), making it tremendously flexible. It’s range isn’t the greatest but it’s serviceable and we’ll get ways around that later, of course.
Ginga’s the main pilot right now, though you can set Hokuto as the main during intermission; their stats are rather similar, though Ginga has a slight edge on offense. The Dendoh can also be very bulky, especially since Hokuto knows Iron Wall – with some extra skills, he can keep that command running for quite a long while.
Dendoh’s one of the more common event deployments, FYI, so you’ll need to put it to use like it or not. Even without that, I’d still use it since it’s quite the good unit (and it can be a broken one, depending on how sassy you’re feeling).

Let’s have Vega set this up for the kids. By the way, she’s 100%/3% against the Gulfer, without any sort of bonus.

: Gulfer… The time has finally come for us to fight! And I will make sure those two, and the Dendoh, are kept safe!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjpagHrTzIc
Seems like Master Asia had more than one student.

Only one attack for the kids right now.

: Here we go, Ginga!
: Right on! We can’t let this thing wreck any more of our town!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wicW_PAJYzA
Whereas Ginga is Kenshiro Jr. Do note that the pose at the end is a dynamic finish but, unlike Alpha 2, enemies here don’t die midscene.

: Whew…
: Somehow we made it…
: Very well done, you two!

*Alarm!

: The Federal army’s fighter squadron has failed to repel the enemy. Gulfer RoBeasts encroaching upon Hoshimi’s airspace.
: Their main force is here…!

This guy’s called Devil Saturn 6 (playing on God Mars). He speaks in Kansai! And I had to replace it with something, as some lines directly reference him having an accent, so…

: The energy reading wis comin' fae aroond 'ere… Och, pinheid may be in charge but ‘e’s a proper slave driver, ‘e is. If ‘e wants something, ‘e ought tae go an’ git it ‘imself.
: But… Ah ken that’s nae happening, with ‘im busy digging oan the moon.
: Wh-what?!
: Those aren’t Gulfer… Who are they?!
: Do you think they’re enemies too?
: Crivens! Is that the Kenryuu?! Wot’s it doing ‘ere?!
: Huh? I think he’s shocked to see us?
: Psh, that goes both ways.
: Eh? Hmm? Nae, it’s something else noo that Ah look at it.
: Och, Ah was worried thare fer a jiffy. Thooght ‘e ‘ad shoon up, Ah did.
: Erm… Uh, oh… Speak o’ the devil an’ ‘e’ll appear… If ballheid actually did, it’d be a big problem. Ahm proper tired o’ going’ throo’ that again ‘n’ again.
: Aah, 'n’ fair warning! If yer git’n’ yer hopes up, don’t! ‘E willnae be coming ‘ere! Honest!
: Who’s he talking to…?
: OK! Time ta git ta wirk! Spondoolies 'n’ coommander renks are as good as oors!
: They’re coming! Heads up, you two!
: We have to fight them too?!
: How many times will I have to tell you? Yes!
: B-But…
: Are you serious?!
: How are supposed to fight all these enemies, then? Is there anything we can use? Like a missile launcher or beam rifle? Or a sword, a bow, a yo-yo, some big hammer or even a guitar? Do we have any weapons? (In MXP, he also asks for a boomerang, a chainsaw and/or blue feathers.)
: …No.
: Whaaaaat?!
: (At least, not now… but we’ll just have to make do.)
: Install the command SP1 with your Gear Commander!
: OK!
: Here goes!
: SP1! Command INSTALL!!

*Beeooop!*

And, with that, the Dendoh’s gained some cool new attacks… but we can’t move this round!
Also, you’ve no idea how troublesome it was to write Devil Saturn’s lines… That said, I had a huge grin on my face as I did. And if anyone asks why an alien would have a Scottish accent, I’d like you, first, to answer me why he’d have a Kansai accent.

Enemy Phase!

Two piddly Gulfers come over, scratch Dendoh’s paint job for 50-ish damage and get promptly trounced.

Everything else stays put or moves out of attack range.

Player Phase!

The Nahel Argama has finally arrived, much to Shibuya’s relief. Kaine has no idea what creatures these are and, if anything, Judau figures they’re not Earth-made.
Inwardly, Duke sees that, as he feared, they’ve finally came to this world.

Devil Saturn 6
Pilot Skills:
  • Prevail L2
  • Support Attack L1
Mech Features:
  • Debuff Immunity
Devil Saturn 6’s Voice Actor: Kenichi Ono (Other known works: Sanger in various SRW, Prospector in Nadesico, Shirota in Dai-Guard and many more)

The standard Super Robot midboss, like Balendos: he’s a wee bit resilient and hits decently hard. His strongest attack has a rather big accuracy modifier, so he might pull some not-insignificant numbers against your non-TFO/Vega units.

Puru Two weakened one of Saturn’s Falgos mooks, so Puru moves in for the kill.

They’re only slightly beefier than the Gulfer.

Might as well give some love to the other ZZ kids… not that they’re getting significant exp from these lower level enemies.

Boom.
Elsewhere, Tap and Elle take out one of the new RoBeasts.

There’s no problem in sending Light to the front here – only Saturn would be getting decent numbers on him and he’s far away.

Vega finishes the job, with a big crit overkill.

And Hayato nearly oneshots a Gulfer. That’s a kill for Judau.

Enemy Phase!

I confess that I didn’t expect him to move right away, so Judau isn’t packing any defensive measures!

: Urgh, we’ve got a whole parade of weirdoes coming to our world!
: We didn’t come all the wey ‘ere fer a laugh, laddie! This is business!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXx8r1IrKU0
It never ceases to impress me how different he sounds from Sanger.

Judau kills one and Puru Two weaken another two mooks.

Player Phase!

Beecha and Iino kill said mooks.

Alright, let’s give the Getter Q its time in the spotlight.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xiz01LkpZIw
It’s not too strong… Puru finishes the job.

Only Devil Saturn left, so let’s get to it!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajD9JjzIAWw
And here’s his strongest attack.

: Onybody who gits in oor wey’s as gud as deid!
: Hey, that’s a Scottish accent? Let’s see about that…
: … Hoo are ye?
: Nae baud, yersel?
: Whoa… this guy’s actually legit!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DfTr_6-cps
And here’s what happens when you pull an Assisted Attack. Everyone is stuck at L1 right now, meaning only one unit can be brought in, but it can go up to L4 – consider this your first iteration of TRI Attacks and Maximum Breaks.

: Yer looks are really confusing me! Ahm gunna turn yer head into a floor sitter!
: Wow… the alien’s got a Scottish accent…?
: This isn’t the time to be amazed, Ginga!
: I-I know, I know! Just make sure you keep up with my moves!
: Y-Yeah!
: Eh?! Is this laddie a Tenkuu Chuushin Ken fighter tae?!
: Nah, this is Shorinji Kenpo! Get that in your head, ya funny alien!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASWEAsIiXy8

: This thing is absolutely not an Earth-made mech!
: Ye got a lot ae stones ta fight us in that wee frisbee!
: An alien with a Scottish accent? Now that’s a great story for Danbei!

: Galactic Crime Syndicate Gyandolar! You will not have your way with Earth!
: Bless me antennas! Is that the Grendizer?! It wis in this planit?!
: Wot luck! If we manage ta git oor ‘ands on Planit Fleed’s treasure, we’ll be swimming in points!

: Looks like we’ve even more extraterrestrial visitors!
: drat it – they’re a new group of invaders, then?!
: Come on, Hayato, Benkei! We’ve nothing to fear if our three hearts are united!
: Tae bad fer ye, thare are six herts all in 'ere! We’ve got ye beat two tae one!

He drops a Biosensor, which boosts mobility by 10.

Devil Saturn isn’t happy as he had a perfect chance to win since “he” didn’t show up today. He explodes and runs off.
Ginga and Hokuto finally breathe a sigh of relief but, right then, the Dendoh runs out of power. The folks at GEAR had yet to set up anything for it, so the bot only had its auxiliary energy to use. Shibuya orders a recovery beacon launched right away.

At the Skull Moon base, Gandal is being informed of a new arrival on the exact opposite side of the moon. It's an immense fortress, the Spiral Castle, and Gandal's folks recognize its owners all too well – the Gulfer, enemies of all life in the universe.
Bracky relates how they were quick in something some RoBeasts down to Earth but they were all destroyed by Duke Fleed’s group. They haven’t attacked the Vegans yet but Gandal isn’t surprised, as their shield should still keep them invisible. Which means they can sit back for a while and see what happens.

At said castle, Devil Saturn finishes reporting what happened and all Giga Gurumei heard is that he failed and fled from the earthlings with his tail between his legs. Deondra, herself, isn’t sympathetic and chides him for bringing shame to the Gyandolar.
Saturn apologizes to “sis”, earning him another round of yelling: he’s supposed to call her with an appropriately respectable title!

Giga Witter, a floating ball thingy, knows that it is by the Gulfer Emperor’s command that they’re using the Gyandolar but, still, is appalled by their incompetency. Deondra fires back that they’re here as their collaborators and ONLY because the Gyandolar boss, Gades, wanted so.
Regardless, Giga Absolute knows that they’re all after the same thing: the Data Weapons. Deondra admits it but wants them to honor the alliance forged between their leaders. Absolute sneers are hearing a space criminal speak of such things.

Their bickering is interrupted by the core of the Spiral Castle itself – the problem they should focus on is the Dendoh, whom none of them expected to be in this world. Their empire has long been searching for it, the one lost GEAR.
And if it's on Earth, the Data Weapons must be there too as they are connected to the GEARs. Thankfully, it doesn’t appear that either it or the earthlings have managed to get their hands on any of the Sacred Electronic Beasts yet. Spiral Castle orders the plan to annihilate mankind suspended and all efforts made to find the Data Weapons. Furthermore, he wants the three generals of the Gulfer to send their ‘chips’ – in the form of humans – to Earth in order to help with the search.

Absolute (Red hair), Gurumei (green suit) and Witter stand surprised that the humans apparently have the same appearance as the Arktos people. Regardless, they’re ready to serve… and also have a speech impediment that makes them append odd suffixes to their phrases.
Regardless, off they go to look for the Data Weapons and Deondra inwardly notes that they must hurry as well.

At GEAR HQ, Shibuya introduces himself to Bright and thanks him for our timely support; it was only thanks to it that they repelled the enemy. Bright is humble but would like to ask a few questions – just like the kids, Shibuya figures. Right then, Kirakuni brings in Hokuto and Ginga and Bright now understands that they’re the pilot of the blue robot.
On the chief’s request, the kids introduce themselves and ask for info regarding this place. Inoue explains that GEAR is a secret organization meant to safeguard Earth from the Gulfer – an empire of machines bent on exterminating all life. And, of course, the Dendoh is the bot they made to face them. Ginga gets that but still doesn’t understand why THEY need to pilot it.

: Chief, allow me to explain the rest.
: That voice… Are you…!
: …!
: The woman who was talking to us in the cockpit?!
: Yes, I am, Ginga, Hokuto.
: (Her voice is so much like mom’s…)
: Hey, wait a minute…
: Y-yes…?
: Are you copying Char, the Red Comet, with that mask?
: Huh?!
: (Well, now that you mention it…)
: N-no. This visor’s a very important piece of equipment for my missions.

But, regardless, Vega introduces herself as GEAR’s vice-leader and requests that they bring their Gear Commanders together.
When they do, both things start giving some light – a far stronger reaction than Kirakuni and Vega got. She says that only those who can bring forth that light from the Gear Commanders are capable of piloting the Dendoh And the strength of the light will become the Dendoh's strength.
Mind you, they don’t know why the Dendoh chose Hokuto and Ginga as its pilots; however, she does know that they are necessary for the Dendoh to reach its full potential and save the Earth from the Gulfer.
To put it simply: GEAR needs them to use the Dendoh and lead the fight against the Gulfer. Ginga and Hokuto are obviously shocked at having such a request made of them, while Bright ponders the situation that requires other kids like Judau and crew to take to the field.

Hokuto wants to why they need them and the Dendoh when there already are so many strong robots around; furthermore, Ginga wants to know why the Gulfer are even attacking us.
Inoue reiterates: machine empire, bent on exterminating ALL life. They’ve wrecked a bunch of planets in the past and ours is next on the list; furthermore, the mighty Gulfer have been further empowered by their alliance with the Gyandolar. And to top it all off, they’ve already set up shop on the Moon.
“Then this is really impossible for us! We can’t do anything against that!” Hokuto yells. “We’re ordinary elementary school students! How can kid like us fight an empire of machines?!”
“But… We pulled it off just now, no?” Ginga finally speaks up. Hokuto doesn’t think they can do it again but Ginga does. For whatever reason, they were chosen by the Dendoh – that’s got to mean this is something they CAN do, no?

Hokuto isn’t convinced they can do anything but Ginga isn’t willing to agree with that before even trying. How can he call himself a man, acting like that?! Hokuto yells back that Ginga has no idea how terrible something like combat is, and Ginga yells back that he does but can’t just turn his back on it all.

”Aaargh, ENOUGH with your blah, blah, blah! You kids are so noisy!” Vega snaps.
As Shibuya, Bright, Kirakuni, Hokuto and Ginga stand daunted, she quickly recovers and apologizes. Vega tells Hokuto that she understands how he feels – yet it's also the truth that the Dendoh chose him and that everyone needs his help. Furthermore, to Ginga, she says that being chosen does not change the danger of this battle.
Shibuya leaves it to them to make this decision and Ginga doesn’t really see a choice, lest his friends and hometown end up a victim of the Gulfer. Furthermore, he gives Hokuto some words from his mother: “righteousness without strength is powerlessness; strength without righteousness is violence". They’ve got some strength of their own now, so he wants to use it for what’s right.

Vega tells Hokuto to have faith in both himself and in Dendoh and the kid finally agrees. He’ll pilot the bot as a way to protect his family and everyone else from the Gulfer. Shibuya thanks them both and, with that decided, turns to Bright with a request: take the kids and Dendoh onto the Argama, as a way of them gaining experience.
Shibuya knows, considering the situation of the world, that GEAR can’t limit themselves to fighting just the Gulfer.

Hokuto is a bit uneasy about fighting other humans but Shibuya tells him that there are many groups right now trying to dominate the world. Those groups, like the Gulfer, threaten the peace of the Earth Sphere.
To set Hokuto’s mind at ease, Vega points out that modern mobile weapons all come equipped with high performance ejection systems. Thus, unless he hits the cockpit directly, the pilots will be safe. With that, Shibuya asks Inoue to see that the Dendoh’s brought to the Nahel Argama and the professor calls the kids to follow.
As they leave, Bright turns to Shibuya with a dark cloud above his face. The chief understands, also feeling ill at ease at the thought of sending kids off to battle; however, having been chosen by the Dendoh, this is something neither of them can avoid.
What does that mean? Vega explains that the Gulfer will be after them, and the bot, now and should they get their hands on them, all life in the galaxy will be finished. This has Bright demanding to know what the Dendoh has within it to pull that off, and Vega promises to tell him when the time is right. And, with that in mind, she'll be joining the children aboard the ship.

Aboard the ship, our folks are giving the Dendoh a look over. Aqua ponders that it is quite different from an Earth-made unit, what with the turbines on its limbs. And, judging from what we saw in the last battle, it seems to be a melee-focused robot just like the Mobile Fighters.
Kaine also mentions how the pilots are about the same age as the Purus… eliciting a startled reaction from Aqua. Speaking of, the Purus are showin Ginga and Hokuto around the ship and they’re surprised to see that their mech has already been brought aboard. Puru Two does wonder what’s with that open hatch in the Dendoh’s back but neither kid knows what it is.
Kaine and Kouji like seeing the kiddies all getting along so quickly but Aqua is off in her own, panicked, inner monologue: “Those children are the Dendoh’s pilots…? And I heard that the soon-to-arrive pilot of the Raideen, Akira Hibiki, is a high-schooler… Are we really not going to get any pilots around my age?!”

Inoue and Aiko then arrive, having taken a wee bit more time than anticipated to bring the Hyper Dendoh Batteries aboard. With these plugged in, there’ll be no risk with today’s event repeating.
“Wait, what?! The Dendoh runs on batteries?!” Hokuto balks. “But don’t robots nowadays all run on stuff like solar power?” Ginga adds.
Inoue admits that they considered that but were worried about what’d happen at night, or on snowy or rainy days. With these, the only problem is keeping them recharged. Aqua’s still a bit concerned, as mobile weapons burn through energy like no one’s business – even the Garmraid’s own auxiliary power supply empties out pretty quick.

Inoue says that this will suffice for the Dendoh right now – causing Aqua to wonder about that “now” bit. Everything’s interrupted when Kirakuni comes over to pick up Ginga and Hokuto – if they’re going to be working on this poo poo from now on, they need to explain all this to their moms (though they can’t talk about the Dendoh or Gulfer, of course).
Kaine approves of them being nice to their mothers whenever they’re together – they ought to or they’ll regret it later. Seems like he’s speaking from experience and, indeed, Kaine’s own mom went missing while he was fighting the Giganos. Still, she’s a very fierce woman so he’s sure she is safe – somewhere.
By that description, Ginga already has a very clear idea of what kind of person Kaine’s mother is. When Hokuto asks, Ginga tells him he'll find out soon enough.

Back in the city, Ginga's mom Midori gets ready to scold Ginga for doing something so bad that not the police, but the army wants to haul him in. Who did he fight this time? She did not teach him Kenpo for stuff like that!
Ginga swears he did no such thing but, then, what’s this soldier doing in their home? They want to explain that, if only she’d stop yelling and listen to Kirakuni! And, indeed, Hokuto already sees that Ginga was talking about.
Midori demands a confession but Orie steps in and calmly argues that the kid seems to be telling the truth. Kirakuni stammers a story about the kids being selected for the army’s new science trainee program! They’ll be touring the world, visiting various different laboratories and experiencing the latest technology! Plus, this will count as part of their school year so their learning won’t be impaired.
Midori asks if it’ll be safe and Kirakuni stammers more. Ginga begs her to let him go, which only strikes her as weird – since when does he care so much about his studies? Kirakuni is sweating bucket against this sharp mother but Ginga insists that he’s totally serious.

After a brief staredown, Midori agrees to let him go if he wants to so much. Furthermore, she turns to Kirakuni and tells him she’ll give him the lecture of his life if anything happens to Ginga.
As for Orie, she asks what Hokuto wants to do. He, of course, wants to go along and she easily agrees as well. With that, Kirakuni will be back to pick them up tomorrow and takes off.
Ginga’s little sister steps over and he tells her to be good while he’s away on his trip. She agrees, on condition that he buys her a souvenir: a stuffed lion! Sounds good and, considering his imminent departure, Midori figures she’ll make his favorite for dinner tonight. Ginga's not one bit happy about lying to his mom, but he knows it’s for a good cause...
Orie and Hokuto will be taking off as well and Midori apologizes for not being able to be more hospitable at the moment. That’s no problem, what with Ginga helping watch over her son. Sounds good and Midori asks that Hokuto do the same in return.

Back at their home, Orie remembers Ginga as the kid they met at school – Hokuto figures they’ll be good friends. But, either way, she wants to know if Hokuto really wants to go on this tour. She will not force him to do one thing or another, so he’s free to choose.
Hokuto admits that he’s not 100% sure about this but that’s why he’ll be with Ginga. Furthermore, he feels that it is something he has to do. Orie will say no more, then, but wants him to remember that he’ll always be in her thoughts.
With that, she’ll also be making his favorite stew for dinner.

Unfortunately the person behind the series composition as well as several episode scripts for Dendoh, Chiaki Morosawa, passed away earlier this year. Her husband Mitsuo Fukuda was the director and they worked on several shows together. (Prior to this it was Cyber Formula GPX and afterwards Gundam SEED.) Dendoh and Cyber Formula are both excellent shows though and if you like what Dendoh does it's worth looking up at least the original Cyber Formula which is to racing anime what Dendoh is to super robots. It got an official English DVD release though that might be hard to find these days. Dendoh sadly never did.

I've a feeling Dendoh's license is with some Harmony Gold-level dick of a company.

For instance, I scoured Nico and managed to find the full version vocal of W-Infinity to use later in this. Youtube didn't have it, so I figured I'd upload the thing as it's a pretty nice song.

It was IMMEDIATELY content ID'd and blocked everywhere. Not even auto-monetized like Bandai did with Z3's Unicorn BGMs - blocked.

I think i'm gonna like Dendoh.

Devil Saturn - and the Gyandolar in general - are not from Dendoh, mind.

And he speaks in Kansai, a dialect that's usually localized as a thick US southern accent. Normally, I would simply that ignored it and written him speaking in plain English but since the game went out of its way to poke at his manner of speech, I needed to turn it into something to make it fit.

The idea of a Scottish accent amused me enough that I figured I'd go with that.

Douglas can tell from their frowning faces that the two of them have been fighting, though Hugo denies it. He's about to tell them the area he wants them to patrol when an alert comes in from a Federal surveillance plane: unidentified Mobile Suits at point F2309.
Bright orders him to try and get an ID and, when he does, Torres is shocked: “Th-this code is… the Death Army!”
The footage from the surveillance plane leaves no mistake, as evidenced by Hugo’s shocked expression. Douglas is also dumbstruck, as those units should have all vanished with the Devil Gundam a year ago – the Argama crew was even there to see the Shuffle Alliance end the monster.
Hugo is pissed off, wondering if this means the Devil Gundam has resurrected. As he froths at the mouth with rage, ignorant of Aqua’s confusion, Bright orders everyone to battle stations – the Nahel Argama is going to intercept these things.

Mission 5 – A Nightmarish Gundam Fight

Bright is loath to relive this nightmare again and Torres immediately pings the Death Army engaging us.
There are no underground heat signatures, meaning the main Devil Gundam isn’t around; Ginga is having a hard time believing the monstrosities ahead are MSs but Hokuto had seen them before on TV.
With that in mind, Bright sends everyone forward.

Kill everything, don’t lose the Argama.
We’ve land-bound Death Army soldiers to the north plus, and I’m 100% serious about this name, Death BIRDIES to the west. They’re a wee bit bulkier than the mooks we’ve fought thus far but still no threat at all.

With that in mind, Ginga is just in range to showcase his strongest attack. Getting kills with him is necessary for a secret.

Kouji cleans out the last bird, learning Prevail L2.

: We’ve got more! Over there now!
: They… They can’t keep this up forever, right?
: They can, actually. Self-multiplication is one of the traits of the DG Cells.
: Oof… I heard the stories but these things are even worse than I expected.
: But they should still all have been destroyed…!
: Does this mean someone’s brought them back…?!
#1: … Any signs of it? (These portraits are meant to be half-hidden but I couldn’t find their files.)
#2: None. Looks like it’s not here.
#1: Fine; then I’ll just go and end these worms. Everything ready?
#2: Of course.
#1: Alright…!
: RISE, GUNDAAAAAAAAAAAM!!

*Finger snap!*

It’s not FRYING DA SKY but I reckon this BGM works well enough. :swoon:

: Haaaaaah…! Hm!
: Th-That Gundam!
: Can it be?!
: Come, Fuunsaikiiiiiiiiii!!

*:horse:*

: A horse?!
: (Is that a Data Weapon?!)
: (No… I don’t think it is…)

: Here I go!

: Hmph, they were no trouble at all. Likely because the main unit really isn’t around here.
: Wow! That guy just wrecked them in the blink of an eye!
: He’s…
: Domon Kasshu of the Shuffle Alliance – the King of Hearts…!
: I-I know! His championship match with Kazuya Ryuzaki in the last Colonial Tournament was the most awesome thing ever!
: You're well-informed...
: ‘Course! Any martial artist would be!
: Well, he’s famous even beyond those circles as part of the Shuffle Alliance.
: Yeah. I heard he helped Daimos and the Federation Army during the Baam War…
: (What a surprise to find him here…)
: Hugo… is there something with you and the King of Hearts or the Devil Gundam?
: …
: It’s just that you’ve been acting strange for a while now.
: Aqua, switch our power source to the batteries.
: Huh…? But those are only for emergencies…
: I need to be sure that the mech will move as I want it to right now.
: And what is that supposed to mean, huh? That I can’t be relied on to keep our output steady?
: (There’s no way this is the end when we’re dealing with those things – they’re way more stubborn than that…!)
: And I really don’t think you’re in a position to talk like that to others! How’s your body doing today, huh?!
: Enough – just do as I say and make the switch. Do you want to die here?
: !
: F-Fine! But I’ll want an explanation later!
: We’ve an incoming transmission, sir.
: Put it through.
: It’s been a long while, Cpt. Bright.
: Since the Devil Gundam Incident, Rain Mikamura.
: I’m getting in touch to ask that you all stay alert. It’s possible there are more enemies on their way.
: No, they’re already here!

*Alarm!*

: Captain! We’ve detected some objects on high-speed approach!
: Here they come! Stand ready, troops!

: Dragon Gundam and Gundam Rose?!
: Hey, bro!
: It’s been ages, Domon Kasshu.
: You two…
: Hey, are those…
: Yeah; Sai Saici, the Ace of Clubs, and George de Sand, the Jack of Diamonds. Also members of the Shuffle Alliance.
: Sai, George… why are you here?
: Isn’t it obvious? It’s the Shuffle Alliance’s duty to exterminate those abominations, no?
: Yeah, that’s why, bro. Still, how about a battle for old time’s sake?
: What?!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPU--Qbhoxo

: What are you doing, Sai?!
: I just told you! Let’s go, bro! Time for a battle – a Gundam Fight!
: (He’s…!)
: What is he doing…? This is hardly the time for that…!
: I suppose I will just sit back and watch. And please, do not hold back, Domon.
: … Fine. Everyone else will stay out of this.

*Domon splits off from Fuunsaiki*

: Haaaaaah…! Haah!!

: Ok… Let’s do this, bro! Gundam Fight!
: Reaaaadyyyyyy!
: GOOO!!

So now we have to reduce the Dragon Gundam under 50% HP and, like our last Medius battle, no one else can even move.
Granted, it’s not like Domon even needs help to do this:

Fuunsaiki
Pilot Skills:
  • Support Defense L1
  • Support Attack L1
  • Hit & Away
Spirit Commands:
  • Accelerate (5)
  • Strike (20)
  • Iron Wall (35)

Yup, it’s a horse. Not even a cyber-horse or an AI – just a goddamn awesome horse that gets a Mobile Suit and puts on a special suit!
Fuunsaiki’s purpose is to serve as a mount for Domon (or Master Asia, in games where he’s around) and help him fly and tear through the battlefield faster. He also provides a slight boost to HP, Armor and Mobility.
I think he may serve as ablative armor, taking a killing blow himself while leaving the God Gundam unscathed… but that would require Domon ever being at risk of being killed.

God Gundam (Domon Kasshu)
Pilot Skills:
  • Meikyou Shisui – Activates at 120 morale, giving +10 to all stats, +200 HP, +50 EN and +10 Mobility, as well as enabling more attacks
  • Prevail L2
  • Sword Cut L3
  • Assisted Attack L1
Spirit Commands:
  • Focus (15)
  • Invincible (10)
Mech Features:
God Shadow – Activates at 130 morale, giving a flat 50% chance to dodge all attacks
Domon’s Voice Actor: Tomokazu Seki (other known works: Stahn in Tales of Destiny, Sousuke in FMP, Gilgamesh in Fate/stay night and a billion more)

Holy poo poo, this guy’s broken. He’s strong as no one’s business (I’d say strongest Real in the game), has a decently ranged MAPW and is virtually untouchable once his morale gets going. Domon’s stats are, of course, through the roof in all but defense and range – the two he needs the least.
The only weaknesses he has are that the God Gundam is rather limited in movement and reach if you’re not using its strongest attack (Fuunsaiki or parts fix the former, too). It can be a bit of an EN-guzzler, too, but his attacks are rather crit-happy so you can go mook hunting with his cheaper weapons.
You’ve no reason to not use Domon unless you’re purposefully holding back.

Now, just because Domon could beat Sai by himself (again), doesn’t mean we can speed things up for us. I’ll move him a few steps back to draw in the Dragon Gundam.

Enemy Phase!

And here he comes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAw84ZkES3c
How the usual battle with Domon will play out.

George, true to his word, is standing by.

Player Phase!

You seem healthful. Would you like to not be?

:black101: :black101:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfQhwWx9sps
No introduction needed for this attack, right? And you better the yelling along with Domon!

: Oof… You still got it, bro!
: …While you’re not as good as usual, Sai.
: Heh, heheheheh…
: …
: Still… I’m really gonna beat you today.
: …!
: Because I got my hands on…

: This wonderful power!
: Th-that’s… He’s regenerating?!

: I knew it. You’re…!
: That’s right, bro! We’ve DG Cells!
: I’m sure you’re also well aware of their magnificence, yes? Hmhmhm.
: …
: While I know you refused this power once, what about now? Would you care to partake?
: Never!
: Ho-hum, as stone-headed as ever. I suppose we’ve no choice but to use force now.
: Domon! While we don’t know what happened, those two are now afflicted by the DG Cells!
: No! That’s impossible!
: Huh?!
: As that battle raged on, these men took upon themselves the crests of the Shuffle Alliance… There is no way they bowed to the Devil Gundam!
: Hmhmhm… I can see why you’d want to think that, Domon…
: But we needed power beyond what the Shuffle Alliance offered…
: That’s right. All to protect the Earth Sphere, you see.
: …
: It’s just like before…! And in that case, we should be able to save them in the same way we did back then!
: We don’t need to save these two! What I’ll do is defeat them!
: What are you talking about, Domon?!
: Captain Bright, give your troops the order to attack!
: …Are you sure?
: Aren’t they your friends? Why won’t you try to save them?!
: Again, we don’t need to do that…!
: Is that true…?!
: Yes. I swear it by my fists!
: Th-that’s crazy! If you’re wrong, this’ll end soooo badly!
: Nah, don’t worry about that.
: Huh?!
: The fists are the most important thing to any martial artist and he swore on them. So I believe him.
: Just because of that…?!
: (If he’s saying that much, then he must be certain…)
: All troops, bring down those two Gundams!
: R-really, captain?! They’re members of the Shuffle Alliance, just like Domon Kasshu…!
: If they’re infected by the DG Cells, then the better option would be to try and rescue them!
: No – I’ll take full responsibility for the outcome! Fire at will!

Welp, I guess we’re gonna be killing about a third of the Shuffle Alliance today. I hope these two weren’t your favorite G Gundam characters!

Fuunsaiki can’t scoop Domon up, so he’ll pop Iron Wall and make himself busy for a turn.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjyfD3Yl_Cc
:horse:

Everyone else starts closing in.

Enemy Phase!

Alright, Round 2.

: How could you abandon us, bro? Talk about cruel.
: If you really are Sai Saici, then I’d readily risk my life to save you…
: However, my heart… and my fists are telling me that you cannot be excused!

“VULCAAAAN!!”

George is done watching, of course.

: Domon… do you truly mean to strike me, your friend, down?
: Shut up! The George I know has a spirit as noble as a rose! Having let yourself be consumed by power, you are now no more than a pig sloshing in the mud!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4fZwziqdsY
:france:

The enemies all close in on us.

Player Phase!

Still trying (and failing) on getting the ZZ kids levels.

Roux also kills a Birdie, still nothing. Maybe I’ll try again later, with stronger mooks.

Two birds left.

Now only one. It’ll die in a counterattack, easy.

Might as well send Kouji to have words with Evil Sai.

: drat it, this guy keeps moving all over the place!
: What, you think you can take me with the puny UFO? You wanna die?

You gotta be able to hit first, Sai (he had an 8% chance, fyi).

Enemy Phase!

George and Sai waste their time. Death Army soldiers still trudging on over from across the map and the Birdie actually decides to just move in.

Player Phase!

Hey, they’re finally getting closer!

And boom.

Elle decides to try my patience and fail to kill the Birdie. I would be annoyed but that allowed me to realize that I was wrong: Getter Dragon and Q actually have another combined attack.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrL-EC_KS54
About 600 points weaker than Double Getter Beam, and with two less range, but it still hits hard and is absolutely FREE to use!
Plus, I think this one looks nicer, what with Ryouma carrying Michiru away. :kimchi:

As I’m sending folks over to kill the remaining mooks, we’ll deal with Sai.

: Hah! There’s no way you can keep up with me!
: Those who’ve lost themselves to power have no chance of emerging victorious! We’ll make you see that!

: You guys’ve no idea how great this power is!
: Strength earned through training is something to be proud of.
: But yours came from cheap tricks. You don’t get to be all puffed up.
: Well, you sure told me… Guess I’ll have to show you what I’m all about by breaking you in half!

: Come, now… you actually think you can pin me down with these sluggish moves?
: Zip it, ya ‘roided-up freak! I’m just getting started!

Sai gets pissed when he loses but Domon tells him to drop the act – the Sai he knows is FAR stronger than this.
“Sai” shakes his fist at him and explodes.

Oh, boy, Kaine just got even faster. I’m gonna need to give Tap and Light some speed boosts to keep up.

Judau, Roux and Bright reach the zombie soldiers at last and put them out of their misery. Now for George!

: You dare face me with such a pitiful contraption? Is this a traditional Japanese Kamikaze move?
: Hey, screw you! I’m not about to be one-upped by someone who didn’t work to get strong!

: Keep your guard up, Ryou! Regardless of where his power came from, we’re dealing with a souped-up Gundam Fighter now!
: Please. My strength has long since transcended that denomination.
: And we’ll still come out on top, so long as you use that strength for your self-interest!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9oE5DpIf5k
Heeey, would you look at that.

: DG Cells… I refuse to allow such demonic technology to taint this beautiful planet!
: Your posturing is so very quaint… However, you will soon learn that ideals, beliefs, love and courage all kneel before power.

: Big time heroes like the Shuffle Alliance resorting to these cheap tricks? How the mighty have fallen!
: Bark all you want. My body is currently reverberating under the sweet melody a raw power…
: Such sensation is beyond philistines like you!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XU-d8KvHFBE
No other way to finish this, really. SEKIHA TENKYOOOOOO KEEEEEEEEEEEN!!

George is gobsmacked that Domon could really strike him down without any hesitation.
Domon says that there's no way he would hesitate in the first place: even if a doll could imitate George, it could certainly not surpass him. George, as he blows up, has to hand it to his insight.

Domon takes four levels for a Cheered kill, learning Spirit and Prevail L3.
Sai and George dropped a Shuffle Crest (+5 to starting morale) and a Booster.

That’s all enemies destroyed and it seems pretty clear from Domon’s attitude that we were dealing with doppelgangers there. That’s why he fought as freely as he did.
Inwardly, however, Domon notes that all this seems to have been orchestrated to draw him out. Bright, of course, has many questions to ask and invites him and Rain aboard the ship.

Back in the Argama, Rain relates how the Death Army first showed up a few days before, in some ruins by the vicinity of Tokyo Jupiter. Why there? That’s what they’re trying to determine – still unsuccessful, mind.
Domon says that at the very least, one thing is clear: the doppelgangers were sent to divert their attention away from whoever’s scheming to revive the Devil Gundam. The problem, of course, is that all the DG Cells should’ve been destroyed by Raizou Kasshu, Domon’s father and the Devil Gundam’s creator. The best Domon can tell Kouji is that someone must’ve obtained a sample of DG Cells during the Devil Gundam incident.
That wouldn’t be too difficult to do, given how even the Dragonar team saw videos of the Gundam infecting so many places a year ago: the Guiana Highlands, Lantao Island, etc. Problem is, Rain says, Raizou had thought of that and that’s why he released a vaccine meant to trigger apoptosis in all DG Cells. It was with that vaccine that the Shuffle Alliance managed to win that battle… and the new Death Army today seemed immune to it.

In short, these units were made with upgraded DG Cells? Yes and Raizou told Rain that doing such modifications would require some top level tech. That carries a lot of weight, coming from their creator.
Vega ponders if the Gulfer could be behind it but, thankfully, Rain and Domon haven’t found any indication towards that. Still, they’re both planning on continuing their investigation and that’s why they wish to join the Nahel Argama crew. Bright is a bit queasy as doing so will mean thrusting other problems into them but Domon is ready to do his part, as one of the Shuffle Alliance.

In that case, Bright welcomes them with open arms. Light is a bit curious as to the captain’s apparent familiarity with these two and Bright informs that the Argama had also taken part in the final battle with the Devil Gundam, a year ago.
The Nadesico B was also there, along with a bunch of Gundams. Torres is still amazed at a certain stunt Domon pulled when facing the Devil Gundam… but the King of Hearts seems a bit queasy to retell. Rain says that’s a story for another time, leaving with Domon to do maintenance on the God Gundam.
Kouji doesn’t know what happened but Bright asks Torres to keep quiet about “that”. Light and Vega figure everyone’s got stuff they don’t want to be spread to the four winds.

: So, Hugo? Are you going to give me that explanation?
: …
: There was something between you and the Devil Gundam, no? …Did you fight it during your time with the Special Forces, maybe?
: And what about the King of Hearts? Do you…
: …

*People walk over.*

: That was close, Domon.
: Hm.
: Still, it’s only a matter of time before everyone finds out.
: I guess so…
: (Domon Kasshu…)
: (Had he just destroyed that thing quicker, the Cry Wolves…)
: …
: (…No, I shouldn’t resent him for that. From what I’ve heard, the Devil Gundam and DG Cells turned his life upside down as much as they did mine…)

*Hugo leaves.*

: Hey! Where are you going, Hugo?! I’m not done talking with you!
: Do you know him, Domon?
: No, I’ve never seen him before.
: (Then what the heck is his problem…?)

*Panicked running sound.*

: U-um!
: Oh… Are you, perhaps, the pilot of that Dendoh?
: Y-yes! Ginga Izumo!
: Is something wrong, Ginga? You’re shaking…
: I-I’m just freaking out, OK?! The King of Hearts is right here in front of me!!
: Hahah… So you want to meet him, hm?
: …What do you need?
: C-c-c-c…
: Can I have your autograph, Mr. King of Hearts, sir?! I’m a huuuuuge fan of yours!
: …
: Why don’t you, Domon? We’ll all be working together, after all.
: In that case, I needn’t do so.
: Huh?!
: If you’re also a martial artist, then I’m sure you understand.
: My crest, the King of Hearts, has already been carved into your heart – as proof of us standing, and fighting, together as comrades.

*Domon walks off.

: He’s so cool…!
: Sorry, Ginga, he’s just shy. Giving autographs isn’t something he’s used to doing.
: “Shy”…? That’s what it was?
: Hm. I know how he feels, having been his partner for so long.
: (A partner knows how the other feels, huh…?)
: (But that just feels impossible for Hugo and I…)

Ask me about being the best dad ever.

Have you tried putting Hokuto in the front, because I'm pretty sure that's not something you can do in MX or R, unique mechanics aside.

Huh, I just checked and I actually can't. Odd - I could swear being able to (maybe later).

Regardless, getting kills with Ginga will suffice for the secret as well.
