Ken Penders is what happens when a company doesn't pay attention to how one of it's media formats is being used. I beleive at one point he killed Sonic off in the Sonic the Hedgehog comics so he could focus on Knuckles and all the Not-Knuckles OCs he created for some weird hosed up story and SEGA poo poo a brick when someone actually decided to look at what was being pumped out under their brand

Yeah I wrote a post on it in the Bad Runs thread in BSS, while the above did not quite happen, he did just plainly ignore sonic in favor of his OCs.

I do love just how loving lazy he was though.

This is Isaac, a millennium old robot who has been monitoring the world since it was "Gene Bombed" and created a race of animal people and 4 fingers humans, he is definitely NOT a gold coloured E-102 Gamma, and I don't know why you think that, the 102 is just how many bitches he gets being blinged out like that.

One of his court demands however was "Archie take my ending for Sonic as the canon ending for sonic!" Because Penders sees himself as the scribe of all things Sonic, a series he has never played. He still expects Sega to come to him and be interested in giving him the comic back.

So Scott Fulop, who hasn't worked in years, founded a company like a month ago to trademark Mammoth Mogul, a character who was used up until the reboot, but not after that. And now he's decided to sue Archie for all the stuff they did in the past with his character. Because he and everyone else knows Archie has none of the original contracts (lost to an office fire) so they can say whatever they want about Archie ripping them off.

Okay so... ever since Penders first got a hold of Tails he said "Tails has a great destiny in store." He built this up for like 140 issues, of just straight up, "Tails has a great destiny." And then, finally, we get to it, and Tails Great Destiny is to merge with all alternate dimension tails to become Titan Tails, blow Mammoth Mogul away with his rear end and that's it.

EDIT: Someone posted this as to why this case shouldn't go anywhere

quote:

Penders or not, nobody ever heard of Narrative Arc Entertainment. They have no more money to pursue this case than you do; Archie, if necessary, can borrow. In addition, Scott Fulop is claiming infringement during the period in which he worked for Archie as an editor. The first test of the legitimacy of his claims is the question of why, as an editor working for Archie comics on the comics he claimed infringed his work, he did not in 16 years take any action. Resignation, legal action, complaining to his boss - it's on him to prove that he acted reasonably there, not Archie.

Secondly, Penders sued SEGA, and SEGA had Penders' case dismissed, twice, because it was vexatious. The lawsuit that Penders actually won was Archie Comics' own lawsuit to try and prevent him from using what they saw as their characters; they didn't have to stop publishing Sonic comics (because they still own that license, as SEGA still own the character and the contract between the two companies is unchanged) so they still have that income. They presumably sued because there was some notion that these characters were fan favorites and the line would suffer - well, it's been a couple of years, so if sales were going to suffer they'd have done so by now.

Thirdly, the suit that Penders brought against Archie was never decided by the courts - it was settled. That's a private agreement between the two. It can't be used in the way that a prior judgement can - stare decisis does not apply there. So if this goes to trial by jury, Fulop is going to look like an idiot in front of that jury as he tries to explain why even in the past 4 years he hasn't sued of what he claims is a major infringement of his copyrights. "I'm poor" doesn't cut it; and he has to make the entire argument himself. There's no case law from Penders to rely on here.

Finally, legal action isn't necessarily very expensive, even if you lose and damages are awarded.

So, sadly, it's very apparent that Archie has cancelled the Sonic Comic at 290 for many reasons. One that they feel that it doesn't "fit their portfolio" and with books like "Reggie and Me" doing poorly, rather than keep going with, while selling less than usual (maybe due to not shipping it for like half a year and then trying to get shops to pick it up again) the series that is basically their best seller.
Hopefully someone like IDW picks it up and the creative team can keep on.

I really do recommend people pick up the comics from when Penders took over, even if it's pre-reboot, the stories are still great. For those interested on alternate things that could have happened, Karl Bollers once gave an interview talking about what he intended with the comic after it did it's "Sonic has been gone for a whole year" plot line. Bollers didn't get to really do anything as he and Penders were heavy in there war at the time. Jon Gray, who is an absolutely wonderful artist and person, once explained that it was basically like being between two arguing parents who hate each other.

http://archive.sonichq.net/newsite/comics/kbsonicoverview.php

For the reminder on how Penders seized complete control? Well, every now and then people like to work under pen names, on the Sonic comic, both the comics editor at the time and Bollers did sometimes enjoy writing comics as someone else. So Penders outed Bollers pen names and basically harassed him out of the place.

Eh it's not an unpopular opinion by any stretch and there's a very clear change in direction (and quality) after that special.

Of the Sonic Comics I had when I was 10, I remember two of them. One of them was the infamous Titan Tails issue. The other was this weird story where a human bounty hunter (named Hunter, of course) who was going after the Echidnas, who had been forced out of their homeland or at war or something? Then Knuckles went Hyper Knuckles and beat up Hunter. Even back then, I didn't like these comics. I had gotten into Sonic with the Adventure games and just wanted to see my favorite characters do cool stuff. Where was Robotnik? Amy? Chaos? Shadow? Gamma? Hell, what was Sonic even doing? I was just confused reading these comics, at all the different Echidnas and the references to obscure political intrigue and alternate universes and so much talking and weird artwork and who the hell is this Hunter guy and Mammoth Mogul? I don't care about these guys. I wanna see the characters from the games doing cool and fun stuff. These comics were just weird and confusing, they didn't have any appeal to me as a hyperactive Sonic fan.

I think it was for the best that Sonic 06 happened. Sega needed that wake-up call that their brand was spiraling out of control.

The most hilarious thing with Amy wasn't just that she didn't do anything, it's that Penders actively went out of his way to shove her to the sideline. The story behind Mina Mongoose goes that Justin Gabrie, a man who I loving Despise wanted to introduce a new love interest for Sonic that could match up with Sally, someone that Sonic had something in common with. Now, keeping in mind that this is 1999 and Sonic's already been updated to his adventure art (and Eggman's just come back) rather than using the existing character who wasn't doing anything and has been in the comic since #25 they made Mina and decided her trait would be Speed and yeah. And in case you're thinking "Well, okay they didn't want to use her in that roll." She wasn't doing anything! In fact, when they finally did their Adventure adaption, Amy actually had to sit the whole event out! She got herself aged up by "Wishing on Sonic's Billionth Ring" (I think, it was a dumb excuse) and then actually spent the whole event being told "Amy, Don't do anything sit on your rear end." And basically doing exactly that.

So... okay after that, it's clear she's a character now in the active sense in Sonic, so what do they do? They write her out of the story by sending her to go visit her cousin Rob O' The Hedge (Robin Hood Sonic basically) It wasn't until issue #132(!) loving 107 issues after she was introduced as a character into the comic, she finally got made a Freedom Fighter under Bollers pen. The moment Penders came back she was on the side lines.

It literally wasn't until Ian Flynn became the writer that Amy Rose, who has been in the comic since issue #25 got to actually be part of the main cast in any way shape or form. I actually think she may have had less appearances than the Cabal of Secret Grandpa's.

On the opposite coin, that also meant basically 107 issues of Amy not being written horridly so, ya know, small mercies.

Her and Silver are just such refreshing characters in the comic, Amy because she's not just Sonic's fangirl, she's an actual character with feelings and goals and a personality that isn't orbiting around the protagonist. And Silver... he's just a big loving goof and it's hilarious, he's so earnestly trying but he's such a loving failure. Like the first time he appears in the comic is in the middle of the Moebius storyline (Originally Anti-Mobius, one of Scourge's edicts upon becoming King was the force everyone to change their name to actually be names, to get further away from being Knock-off's of Mobius.) looking for Sonic and the guy comes in during the middle of the showdown with Scourge (Featuring Metal Sonic, Amy, Rosy the Rascal, Scourge, Rob O', and Shadow.) And he's just trying to ask which one of them is Sonic while they rumble.

He just looks so lost it makes me crack

I will say, to be fair. As much as I enjoy Ian Flynn's writing, he does have a tendency to hit the meme button for easy comedy.

Obviously every now and then it's kinda funny, but that's like the 8th "It's no use" joke involving Silver.

The joke that Silver is awful at his job never gets old though. In fact Silver is so awful at his job that each times he returns to the future, history has changed, except the world is still hosed up. Since he's ripple proof as a time traveller, he has to relearn all of history each time he comes back because inevitably something's changed, including poo poo HE'S SUPPOSED TO HAVE DONE.

I mean, seriously watch that SatAM cartoon. Notice how it feels like Sonic wandered into some other cartoon and he doesn't belong there and feels out of place. Look at Princess Sally and characters like her. She isn't even the same art style as Sonic.

Sonic is a bright color, has some weird mono-eye thing, has noodle arms and wears nothing but gloves and shoes. He's a funny animal, like Bugs Bunny or Mickey Mouse. Princess Sally and similar characters are basically straight up furries.

Speaking about art styles, I think they should just go back to using Classic Sonic, all the time. The character just looks better with cute and chubby proportions. There's something about modern Sonic that looks kinda... ugly. He's lankier and has long, floppy spikes.

A better looking Sonic is this Sonic Nendoroid toy. He's basically just Classic Sonic, but with green eyes and Modern Sonic's shoes.

Bunnie: Then why does he hit you?

And the other awful thing is that... well... every Echidna is Knuckles and every Hedgehog is Sonic, except they have hair.

Oh, side fun fact. You know Madonna? The prototype planned girlfriend type character for Sonic? Well she was brought into the Post-reboot universe

If someone says it one more time I'm having Florina show up as a corpse. I'm not even kidding, I was pissed off with people doing that shit back in 2010, and I'm not dealing with it now in 2016.
I will also say that your positive memories of the comics in those early issues (especially the mini-series) are most likely nostalgia. They don't hold up. A few years ago /co/ did a "Sonic Marathon" where they storytimed the whole series from issue 1 to the then latest issue (Just before the Pendering) As one of the people who did in fact cover for issues while the OPs internet went down... yeah, they were actually quite terrible.

That said, this image is still basically "The Sonic comic experience" to anyone who started from issue 1

Not that I don't agree with this point, but trusting the opinions of /co/? Idk

I don't see how you can misconstrue "Every page of every issue posted" when it comes to judging something. Besides, Ian and Jon Gray dropped by, it was fun, even got a shout out in Sonic Universe.

The early stuff absolutely holds up because it's so simple and fun. It's just lots of puns and jokes around some simple stories with some surprisingly acerbic quips in there too. My favorite thing about re-reading the early Sonic comics was noticing the environmental commentary that completely passed me by as a kid. Sonic's message at its core was an environmental one, so seeing it realized in that way is nice.

When it starts trying to get serious? Yeah, it probably doesn't hold up as well. I know Mecha Madness probably isn't as good as I remember and Endgame was ridiculously contrived, but I still love it. :colbert:

Oh the Mike Gallagher stuff is amazingly fun. The moment the series tries to take itself seriously it slowly becomes more awful. That said, Mecha Madness actually does kinda stand out as being pretty okay.

Does Ian at least have other work now? Sad that Sonic Comic's finally dead, but I'm more worried about the cool people involved than the publication.

I know he at least works on the IDW TMNT book and he writes the Jughead comic.

Got an archive of the threads somewhere? The responses and the shared vitriol ought to be something worth enjoying.

It's probably on one archive, but each one I found had search disabled, and The Ride (what the storytime was called) was during 2014. For the record, The Ride went on for several months, covering every issue of the Archie comics, including the side stories, Sonic X and the Brazillian Megaman comic. what /sthg/ is now owes a lot to The Ride, since it was basically an explosion of fanart and edited images.

EDIT: I just looked on /sthg/ they do have a MEGA archive of The Ride

I'm on limited net so I haven't gone through it but this looks to be a collection of everything edited. I'll see if I can't find links to the threads since I'm fairly certain that's all just the art content that got made.

EDIT: Oh god... memories

To answer the Editor question, the Editor in question was Justin Gabrie, who was a colossal loving tool and a complete poo poo of a writer. He would use the OP Eds at the end of each issue to rant about Star Wars or whatever else he watched like it was his blog, from all accounts he was a lazy rear end in a top hat who couldn't be bothered to put his foot down and go "Okay knock it off" while his two head writers were literally scratching each others eyes out, and then there's his writing. Hoo boy.

Let me introduce you to a motherfucker by the name of Tommy Turtle

Also that's, and I poo poo you not this is his name, Snoop Doggy Dog in the background. Anyway, Tommy Turtle was the never before mentioned best friend of Sonic and Sally, Sonic and Tommy had a Turtle and the Hare thing going on, after a couple of fake-out deaths and a robot-duplicate, Tommy joined the 'Brain Trust' of Knothole, then he saved everyones lives over and over again. Then he cried over some nanites that bonded too him and let him make a jetpack and wings and be super awesome. Then Eggman's AI Son A.D.A.M. took him over, and he sacrificed himself to save everyone. What a hero.

When he wasn't writing about his OC Self-Insert, he was writing about inane bullshit like the TRUE original Freedom Fighters.

Formed by Colonel Tig Stripe and featuring, MP Bull Bones, Sir Peckers, Trey Scales, Spot Long. They were the REAL original Freedom Fighters, the ones who inspired Sonic and Sally and they were totally kicking Eggman's rear end until Trey Scales betrayed them. See, this is the poo poo he was doing when he was supposed to be getting his writers under control. Justin Gabrie was a lazy poo poo who didn't once do his job as the loving editor.

EDIT: I mean what kind of Editor would let this be published?

It's so easy to blame Penders because of the lawsuit bullshit but really, almost everyone working on the comic during that period shares responsibility for the mess. Ron Lim and Karl Bollers especially seem to manage to squeak under the radar because of Penders but holy poo poo does their stuff suck rear end too.

Dawn Best's art is decent though. There's another artists who pops up every once in a while who's pretty decent too, but they are the exceptions.

Also, Tommy the loving Turtle. Jesus Christ what a miserable lame character.

Bollers squeaks under there because he actually does get better about his writing. His main issues were being overly verbose and dramatic and... for lack of a better describing term loving boring. He tends to be given a pass because he actually liked the Sonic characters and was trying to focus the story around them, not whatever his new OC toys were in that instant.

No one talks about Ron Lim because he was just an awful artist on the book. And saying "The Sonic comic has awful art" outside of Spaz, Yardley, I could debate-ably say Bates, and of course Hesse for the short time he did, most of the art was poo poo.

Bollers aint no Mike Gallagher, but he's cut some slack because he did (slowly) improve, and his future plans for the comic showed he really was trying to get things more aligned with the games universe.

Penders, if anything, just got worse.

Big the Cat does not give a gently caress.
If the world was ending and demons were rising from hell, Big the Cat would continue to fish and relax the days away with Froggy. He has no gently caress to give because the only gently caress he was given is for Froggy. If Froggy were to be kidnapped, Big would topple empires, destroy a thousand year old civilization devoted to the rebirth of the ultimate evil, brave every frontier and face down against anything that would stand in his way. Because Big only has one gently caress to give, and buddy, you aint Froggy.

100 words exactly.

I love Penders talking about a Sonic movie, because you see, he did in fact, attempt to get one off the ground in the past and utterly hosed over Ben Hurst!

The Story posted:

I did consult with DIC to see if there was a way to generate some enthusiasm for a feature film to be the "Third Season" of SatAm. I was given the name of a SEGA executive and had a most pleasant conversation. She had to go to a meeting, but said she would like to talk to me more about the idea.

The next day, I got a call from Ken Penders, who had been alerted by his contact in their office that I was interested in getting a Sonic movie going. I generously offered to include him in the effort and told him my strategy. Get SEGA to become invested in the idea by hiring us to interview their creative game designers, execs, etc and see if we could develop a story line that would fulfill the third season - and simultaneously give them creative ideas to develop new games. A win-win, situation.

Then, I called SEGA back, but I was shocked when the exec "lit" into me, telling me, "People pay US to develop Sonic product, we don't pay them!" Then she hung up on me. Obviously, Penders had related my strategy to them in a less-than-flattering way. Thanks for the knife, Ken.

So, I gave up. Later, I was informed by friendly fans that Penders had written in his message board or some such place that "Ben Hurst doesn't know how movies are made in Hollywood." (Hey Ken, read "Adventures in Screenwriting" by William Goldman and get some humility) Then he dropped hints that HE would be the writer for a big Sonic Feature Film. That was three years ago.

So, if you're reading between the lines, you can see I don't hold out much hope for seeing the third season of Satam - or being the one who does it if it happens. And that makes me sad. Because if it were to happen, those 13 episodes would sizzle.

But this I've learned: Never leave a series on a cliffhanger unless you have a contract for the next year. And be more careful in my choice of people to confide in.

Oh yeah, and Penders has always looked like the absolute creepiest motherfucker.
