Do you guys want one? I've got a few ideas for one, and a lot of time on my hands for another two weeks until Uni starts.

I was thinking that we should open the thread with suggestions. Keep in mind that this is BYOB and not the book barn - we're not reading poo poo for the sake of analyzing its themes or extrapolating from it the state of the human condition. This is just for fun. poo poo, you can suggest a kid's book, if you want; or go as long as that Ice and Fire Songs saga that everyone's talking about. Once we decide on a book, we all take a little while to read the first chapter and then talk about it. What we liked, what we didn't like, what characters are cool and which ones deserve to drown in their own half-comatose vomit - et cetera. Then we just go on from there. If it's a short book, or a short story, we just make a solid go of it and discuss afterwards.

Edit: "With there" - gj me

Thanks man, because I misclicked - was deciding between 'Fox in Socks' or 'Books' before somehow ended up on the one the thread started with.

So we've got one vote for Dune, and a positively fantastic vote for memes - personally, I'd be down for Dune; I've heard that it's a classic of the genre, and even if we don't get more than a few chapters in on the thread itself, it might be the catalyst for reading the whole book on our own.

Everyone else who's interested, what're your thoughts? Anything's good, so long as it's not too esoteric for people to find copies of, online or off.

Everyone should read Kafka on the Shore then dig up the 2008 BYOB Bookclub thread about it and compare notes

I'm reading The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction last year. It's OK.

I've heard good things about that one

I'm working on “Between the World and Me” by Ta-Nehisi Coates and man, it's a (necessarily) uncomfortable and powerful read

Let's read a children's book so it'll be over faster. I mean like a picture book. Let's start small.
