In the internet age, content curation is just as important as content creation. There are already multiple lifetimes worth of content available online. Billions of man-hours poured into the creation of online content in the last decade alone. Much of it intended for wide public consumption, but more of it, statistically even most of it, meant for private viewing, or else viewing by a small number of people. As a result, some of the most interesting content available is hyper-specific, hyper-specialized, or just entirely inscrutable, because the common cultural basis through which we decode this content simply isn't there. Paradoxically, the internet's most commonly-shared content: sex, food, and animals, is its least interesting because of its universality. It is devoid of any perspective or meaning, it does not even manage to capture an experience, so controlled and artificial that it becomes only a totemic representation of a real experience, purely symbolic and inviting any representation the viewer will project onto it. This is why pornography is at the same time both completely devoid of eroticism and incredibly popular. It is a tabula rasa onto which the viewer may place any fantasy, any desire, any thought. It never challenges because it is devoid of anyone other than the viewer. It is the ultimate masturbatory experience. This is why pornography continues to become more and more standardized. The same camera angles, lighting, and so forth in every instance. This removes any directorial perspective, and even the performers perform the same acts in each instance, the same way, with the same timing in all pornography. It is identical not by practice but by purpose, a ritualized representation of the idea of sex. This same pornographic approach is not just taken in depicting sex, but in every aspect of our lives. It is a rejection of perspective, which makes the internet an isolated and isolating place, a solitary experience built on the ritualization of a symbolic collective experience, protected from the challenges of real human interaction. It is purely masturbatory. It is pornography on a societal scale. It is the transformation of all human experience into pornography. Thus the importance of content curation. True, genuine experiences are captured (insofar as that is possible) amongst the data available on the internet. It is the responsibility of internet users to find and preserve unique content. Thus this thread. |
