Current Theme 05/30/20 - 06/07/20: It's Time to (Not) Dual Welcome to the second version of the MTG Create-A-Card Thread, a weekly(ish) contest to use Magic Set Editor (program) or MTG Card Maker (browser) to create custom Magic cards suiting a particular theme. If your card is chosen as the winner, you get to choose the next theme, and pick the next winner, and so the cycle begins again! You can check out the previous thread here. (Requires Archives) TL;DR for all the poo poo below: Don't be an rear end in a top hat, don't go AWOL if you're judging or you win, make decent cards, adversity breeds creativity. Tips for Judges

Entropic posted:A few notes on templating: Kabanaw posted:An important rule in designing cards is making sure that players don't have to remember that something exists without there being a visible reminder somewhere in the game. The reason cards like Obsidian Fireheart or Xathrid Gorgon put counters on things they change is so that a player can look at that card and remember "Oh, this has a petrification counter on it, it's an artifact creature with defender." It reduces the number of play mistakes overall and lets the players focus on their strategy and the game itself instead of wasting headspace remembering extra gamestate information. girl dick energy fucked around with this message at 20:05 on Jun 6, 2020 |

And now, the first week's theme! RoboRosewater Debugger! RoboRosewater gets some pretty decent card designs sometimes! It's in the same position we are where the cards will never get published anyways, so why not work together? Create a card that is a 'fixed' version of a RoboRosewater card. Make sure to link to the original card you're basing yours off of. Rules

Some thoughts on cards, because that is a thing that judges do sometimes: Draconic Tribute - I'm not actually sure about the power level of this card? On one hand, giving yourself a five-turn clock is rough, but on the other hand, even in Modern, there's plenty of very scary dragons that don't need five turns to kill you. I think the card might be better served by being just a little more Johnny. Ephemeral Vale - The effect is fine, but the flavor feels both generic an indistinct. The effect is solid, and is a nice smoothing out of what was already a pretty solid RoboRo card, but the image is a mountain? When the effect is green/white? You try to cover it with the flavor text, but that just muddies things even more (and 6+ lines is always ugly with flavor text). Especially since Vale means "valley". Solid mechanically, needs a flavor rework. Darkcrawler - What Barry was implying is that your card is actually more messy and complicated than the card you're basing it off of, and I think I have to agree. Where is the -1/-1 counters thing coming from? There's a lot of directions to take Darkcrawler, and I feel like you skipped over a lot of them. You might want to look at how the Leylines work and go from there. The 1: Untap ability may bear some fruit, too, and it'd let you get away with it being a little stronger. Maybe something like Darkcrawler, 2W, Creature - Hound, 2/2, If ~ is in your opening hand, you may begin the game with it on the battlefield tapped. ~ does not untap during its controller's untap step. (W): Untap ~. That's probably too many lines and a little messy, but you get the idea. Bring it back closer to the original, and you'll have something promising. Curse of Endless Resurrection - I really like this. The Ninjutsu thing reminds me of the "pervert the mechanics" challenge from the last thread in a pleasant way, and it otherwise not having a mana cost makes it a very interesting Johnny card. I don't care much for the presentation, though, since as fun as old movie references are, I feel like it undermines the very fascinating mechanical flavor that's already in the mechanics. Great Vineheart - I think you overcomplicated a card that might have already been fine with just a flavor change. It's going to be horrifying in Legacy either way, you might as well embrace it. Bargain Dustbowl - You're right about Prophetic Firespank, but I'm not sure if this is the best direction to take it? I dunno, it feels... messier than it has to be. Hydratic Horse - When I saw the first line, I oohed. When I saw the second line, I ahhed. And when I saw the third line, I quite literally laughed aloud. I think it's becoming pretty apparent that I love Johnny stuff, and this is a fun direction to take the card. Loving all the turnout so far! Simic Fodder: At first I didn't like the "separate creature" clause because I felt like it limited some really great Johnny potential. Then I realized it was Common, and saw what you did. This is a card designed for Limited play, isn't it? Festerpit: I could actually see this getting printed. You worked off the template of the old card really well, but I wish there was a way that you could have tied the name into it somehow. Fertile Farmland: Once again, my Johnny is screaming. I think I like this better than the Draw A Card versions. My first thought for how to exploit it was actually Blood Moon, because that would be kind of amazing. Ironarn Duelist: Unexciting, but a nicely done Tim with a gimmick. Sink Burdy: girl dick energy fucked around with this message at 12:13 on Sep 14, 2016 |

More card opinion times! Rullor Dav: If there's a particular award for artistry in "make sense of an 'old computer' card". this might get it. How you interpreted Totalwolk is brilliant and I wish that ability existed on a real card. I know you were sticking as close to the card as possible, but I think it might work better as a 2/1, though. As a 1/1, the ability is basically useless on its own without a buff of some kind. Carcass Crab: I'd actually say this feels a lot more Golgari than Simic, between the graveyard love and the auto-death, and even the name. Still very interesting design, and I could see the GB version winning a different contest (so hold onto it), but it feels a bit too much like a departure from the original. Bloodcaster Savant: Can definitely tell what you were going for, but I think the 'colorless that can be spent like any type' is a little overcomplicated, and relies too much on player memory. Control Gravity: Interesting idea, but I'm not really seeing at all where this comes from the linked card, and that's saying something, considering how little there is to go on. Some kind of intentionally pie-bending Gruul flight card might have been a better way to go with this. Racka Rornoshy: Oh, hey, a card that kept the random name, and made it work! I like this, another fun land that opens up all that delicious Crucible of Worlds nonsense without having to pay (3) or Temur Enchantress: I like where you went with this, but you could easily get away with changing the color costs to be more in line with color identity. Green on the tokens and black on the life loss (or red for damage), maybe? It's a great idea for a card, but the color weirdness puts it on shaky ground. Vampiric Cavern: Yeah, as others have said, that ability is very overcosted for what it does. Though you could reduce it to B, sacrifice a creature and ~: Add BBB to your mana pool. Then it's a Dark Ritual callback. Mindblast Orb: You were kind of painted into a corner here, since Merpents is already pretty similar to Psychogenic. Letting it target creatures or players (and probably deal Shock damage, instead of Bolt) might refresh it, but it's still stuck being in a niche that already exists. Bacchin: I realize it's only Black because it's supposed to be a Commander, but I'm still not sure how that plays into the color identity at all. Soul Devourer: 3 for "sacrifice a creature, put a 2/2 zombie token into play" feels pretty overcosted. 2 is enough to make it a slightly better Prowler's Helm, which isn't a bad thing considering Prowler's is strictly mediocre while Whispersilk exists. Also, I love the Johnny potential of this card, and spent a little while trying to figure out how to make an infinite with Brass Squire. (For the record, best I found was Soul Devourer + Brass Squire + Intruder Alarm + Life and Limb = Infinite Mana) But I'm sure there's better ways to make it work. Short version: It's neat, I like it, feels overcosted. girl dick energy fucked around with this message at 20:44 on Sep 17, 2016 |

AJ_Impy posted:You're in luck, it does exist on a real card. Admittedly a draft fodder evasive creature from a terrible set over a decade and a half ago, but it's there. I avoided going for a higher power owing to how it scaled: It starts out as just a look at your or your opponent's next draw, but stick any equipment on it and you can fateseal lock your opponent, Jace the Mind Sculptor style. I thought that was worth requiring the extra effort, and makes the card play better by incentivizing your opponent to tap out once it becomes that manner of threat, but an ignorable steady source of damage unboosted.

A heads-up to everyone that I'm starting to work on my results and I'll probably post them right around midnight, PST, so if you've got cards still bouncing around in your head, now's the time to either make them, or let me know you need a few more hours!

Results Time! This was quite a list, especially for a first time back. I was worried that there wouldn't be much turnout, but I am glad to be proven wrong. Can't wait to see what else we've got in store for the future. As a disclaimer, There were enough great entries that I had to get pretty pedantic about things to properly trim down the field, including minor violations of color identity, and any card where I could think of any way to improve upon the final version mechanically. Third Place Rullor Dav, Mindspy by AJ Impy, based off of Rullor Dav Slavish devotion to the card as presented bore fruit very well here, while also keeping its power level and complexity well within reason. Sadly, the rather uninspired image and creature type kept it from being higher on this list. Second Place Hydratic Horse by Lottery of Babylon, based off of Horse Counter Horse. This is a brilliant, brilliant extrapolation of a statement with almost no information, and uses the wonderful counter/counter pun. I can only imagine how much fun this card would be in a deck with Judge's Familiar. And the 1st place card is something that struck me immediately as something I would need to give a spot to, no matter what came next. something that struck me not only as "I could see this printed", but as "why hasn't this been printed yet?". It's a masterwork not only within the context of fixing a RoMaRo card, but of card design in general. But first, some honorable mentions.
And the winner is... Festerpit by Anil Dasharez0ne, based on Myr Ulleuger! I wish I had the MtG vocabulary to describe just why I like this card so much. It's a dead ringer for older Magic design, for the rare occasion where you had no idea if it was designed top-down or bottom-up, but it worked spectacularly in either context. This is not only my favorite custom card in this contest, but that I've seen at all in recent memory. So, congratulations, Anil Dasharez0ne! You have the next choice! Please announce the theme and end date within 48 hours, if possible.

I started with "enchant enchantment because it sounded silly... and ended up with something I'd probably actually play. There's not a lot of precedent for the mana cost on something like this. Indestructibility hits any permanent, but is too expensive to be playable in anything but limited. W felt far too low for a source of indestructible. Copy Enchantment has a lot of ways you can abuse it coming with actually having two of whatever you're copying, and WW would make it almost unplayable on anything except white anthems. So 1W it is! This one doesn't need much introduction, I think. Sometimes a card is just a little too powerful, but the concept is too good to throw away. It's an Artifact Enchantment (Enchantment Artifact?) to make it extra vulnerable to removal, and it's 1U instead of U so it doesn't just give the most degenerate combos 8 copies of Voltaic. girl dick energy fucked around with this message at 21:45 on Sep 26, 2016 |

Well now I feel bad. How about an enchantment counterspell? It's basically a Remand that doesn't cycle, but I think it balances out with delaying the spell, or possibly hard-countering it, if the player doesn't have enchantment removal. Because who the gently caress needs Leyline of Sanctity? The costing is a little weird, but I think it's justified, since it doesn't actually stop burn or discard spells, it just copies them. There's probably also shenanigans to be had with using self-targeting spells. girl dick energy fucked around with this message at 00:48 on Oct 1, 2016 |

New version below. There aren't a lot of interesting common lands, and even fewer that have a use beyond 'low budget mana fixing'. So, hell, why not build one around being common? With one, it's a repeatable Electritrickery, but at four, it's a repeatable Flameslash. That feels pretty good for an ETBT land, honestly, especially in a draft where you might be able to pluck two or three for some repeatable removal. Edit Decided to embrace the 'feels like a pre-NWO land' thing. girl dick energy fucked around with this message at 05:31 on Oct 5, 2016 |

New version below Because Bant always needs more help, right? In contrast to the last one, I wanted to make a Mythic land that actually felt Mythic. Something with that "I want to build a deck around this" factor. The name is a reference to the fact that this would probably get banned in everything except Vintage/Legacy pretty drat quickly. girl dick energy fucked around with this message at 05:30 on Oct 5, 2016 |

Land destruction is just about my least favorite mechanic in Magic, being totally honest, but I think I'd mind it a little less if there were more ways to deal with it. For example, a cycle of lands that answer land destruction. girl dick energy fucked around with this message at 16:13 on Oct 6, 2016 |

Put them on the bottom? "Scry 4, then draw 2 cards"? A nontoken creature and a land for what's basically a repeatable Brainstorm is not bad at all.

Primal exists at least partially as a solution to a problem I see a lot of in Modern. There's plenty of hate for nonbasic lands, things that you can use to counteract cards that are especially problematic for your deck to deal with, and so there's reasons to not play nonbasic lands. However, that's not the same thing as there being a reason to play basic lands, which is a subtle but important difference. Primary in green and secondary in red, Primal is intended for, but not at all exclusive to, mono or dual-color decks, and has some mild synergy with Devotion, as cards like Leatherback Baloth get along quite nicely with Primal decks. Mana fixing is, of course, still important if you want to see Primal end up in anything except monocolored decks (which have historically done very poorly in competitive). It's a keyword that's technically a downside, but that encourages you to play unexciting but reliable spells with a solid and uncomplicated mana base. It's the kind of set mechanic you'd put into something you intended as a stepping stone for a casual player into eternal formats. Something simple to understand and easy to build around. Mostly. girl dick energy fucked around with this message at 12:15 on Oct 15, 2016 |

I dunno, personally my favorite downside mechanic has always been Decaying. Kind of ended up in the same camp as Vanishing, a mechanic where you'd get a creature for only a certain number of turns. Yeah, to be fair, the early stuff was mostly filler, with the occasional limited bomb like Plaguebearer Horde. But then they finally started getting creative. Militia Camp still shows up in some white Modern decks. ("Wall of Duh" is still one of my favorite nicknames for a card ever, even if it caused a lot of fights about the whole -1/-1 vs +1/+1 counters thing.) And I've never seen an entire table gang up on me faster than when I play my Formucor EDH deck. girl dick energy fucked around with this message at 11:24 on Oct 16, 2016 |
