A vigilante-style group is running "safety patrols" in Melbourne's CBD to counteract what it claims is the inability of police to protect the public from rising street crime and gangs such as Apex. The self-proclaimed "patriot" group Soldiers of Odin Australia – an offshoot of a far-right Finnish group – is patrolling Federation Square, Birrarung Marr and Bourke Street Mall and outside city train stations at night. Its members wear distinctive black uniform jackets emblazoned with a Norse war helmet and Australian flag. The local group's manifesto says that while it is "anti-immigration" and "anti-Islam", it is not racist

A man who sexually assaulted a schoolgirl by putting his hand up her skirt on a crowded tram has been jailed for six months. Magistrate Jonathan Klestadt said Marshall Jordan's "lewd conduct" had the potential to reduce the perception of safety of Melbourne's public transport network among children and parents, and found there was no other option than to send him to prison. Jordan, 31, was in August found guilty of performing an indecent act on a child under 16 after a three-day hearing in which he denied touching the girl. Melbourne Magistrates Court was told Jordan was on the 86 tram in Northcote on May 4 last year when he touched the 14-year-old, who felt him put a hand up her skirt as she prepared to get off the tram. She turned to him and yelled: "How dare you, you bloody bastard." Jordan responded he did not do anything, the court was told, and got off the tram and attempted to change his appearance by removing a jacket and putting on gloves. Mr Klestadt on Wednesday found that by altering his appearance, Jordan understood the significance of his actions, before he continued on to work at the Departmemt of Immigration and Border Protection.

At Little Big Sugar Salt in Melbourne's Abbotsford, a new penny-saver version of smashed avocado on toast is now on the menu. The dish, now named The Retirement Plan, loses the expensive goat's curd and beetroot kraut offered on the more luxurious $17 version and offers simply avocado, Vegemite and tomato on toast for $10. #smashthe

A former Socceroo died in hospital because his urinary catheter was wrongly connected to an oxygen supply, leading to a burst bladder and collapsed lungs, a coroner has heard. An inquest is being held into the death of Steve Herczeg at Adelaide’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital on 19 September. Soon after his admission, a nurse heard screams of pain coming from Herczeg’s room and a code blue was called. An emergency team attempted to resuscitate him but was unsuccessful. The doctor who performed the autopsy found Herczeg’s bladder had ruptured and his lungs had collapsed, causing his death by “respiratory failure”. “I understand his oxygen supply somehow became connected to his catheter,” forensic pathologist Stephen Wills told the court. “The bladder ruptured, allowing the gas into the rest of his body.” :screeeeeeeeeee:

The developers behind the demolition of Carlton's Corkman Irish Pub will be hauled before the planning tribunal to force them to replace the illegally demolished 159-year old hotel with another heritage-style building. If that bid by Planning Minister Richard Wynne and the city council fails, the owners will still be forbidden by new planning rules - about to be introduced by the state government - from developing anything except a two-storey venue of similar size and style. Corkman Irish Pub opposite Melbourne University's law building has been demolished after being sold to a local developer for $1.56 million above its reserve in 2014. (Video courtesy: Francisco Ossa) The Corkman Irish Pub, previously known as the Carlton Inn, had a heritage overlay but was demolished on October 15. Its owners Stefce Kutlesovski and Raman Shaqiri had no building or planning permits. It was demolished by Shaq Demolition and Excavation, half owned by Mr Shaqiri. Building waste and rubble - including asbestos - from the historic pub were later found dumped in Cairnlea. The waste was dumped on another property the two men own, where they are midway through developing townhouses and apartments, in an estate called Havenlea. Public outcry over the illegal demolition and subsequent asbestos dumping has been strong, putting pressure on the government and its agencies to act. Mr Wynne said the law changes would, in effect, mean any re-build would force the developers to "replicate the site immediately prior to demolition". "Any application for a permit for buildings and works on the site will require the restoration and reconstruction of the Carlton Inn in its entirety in the form it was in prior to demolition," he said. Neither Mr Kutlesovski nor Mr Shaqiri have been contactable since the demolition, despite repeated attempts by The Age to reach them. The pair are now being represented by lawyer Kimble Stynes, which is negotiating with the state government's agencies over the penalties their companies could face over the illegal demolition. This may include fines of up to $750,000 for the asbestos and building waste dumping, which caused outrage among residents of Cairnlea on Wednesday. developeeeeers
