It's not Edelgard's fault that it's easy to accidentally snap Ignatz's skinny little neck. (In early FE, arenas were to the death, and also the only way to grind exp and money in a game with a finite amount of those things. So you'd send your soldiers to go indulge in bloodsport to get stronger, and hope they weren't permanently killed along the way. These days, arena-style fights show up in non-lethal contexts, like tournaments, and there are other ways to grind exp.)

Mocking him for that never sat well with me because he'd always been open about having struggles with mental illness and stabbing yourself is such an obvious and destructive manifestation of that. Like he has a profound breakdown and seriously injured himself hahaha what a loser.

Edit: For the hand thing, not for being sensitive in general. Mocking his bad comic is also fine, though it's really quite nonoffensively bad considering some of it's competition.

It was extremely clear what she can and cannot accomplish. Cannot: Change Yukari's fate without involving Yukari. Can: Do absolutely anything that doesnt violate that rule. That's what the entire story revolves around. Ymmv may vary as to how well it was executed but to say we needed more rules about what her powers do entirely misses the point. It was never about her powers, it was about if you can save someone without respecting their agency as a person. That is why, at the end of the story, it is hopeful because now that Yukari is in on it, they have a chance.

Basically, I think the comic tells the story it wants to which is: "A girl realizes that no matter what she does, she can't save someone without involving them, it's a mistake to treat her friend as an object to save and not an equal, and this is how she realizes it." I think some of the people who wanted a harder scifi exploration of powers and how the multiverses work are validly frustrated that the story did not turn out to be very interested in that, except as spectacle, but I do think that it wouldn't necessarily have done anything for the story the writer wanted to tell to do that.

That's probably something where we just have different wants from a story, totally fair! I will say nothing is saying they aren't going to be taking direct action now that Yukari is in on it, she's very powerful with her robot thing. But I agree it would have been more satisfying for the story to show that happening at the end.

For me, at least, there's also some looking at it through a lens of multiverse media from the last 5 years or so and it not stacking up in terms of narrative coherence.

I mean, most of the themes around alternate versions of yourself as a metaphor for the road not taken, what it means to be every possible version of yourself at once, and what that does to your perspective re: nihilism was done extremely well in Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. Heck, even What If...?'s Dr. Strange explored the idea of trying to unilaterally change the moment that made you want to go back in the first place in an interesting way.

I basically agree with Crocodile King, I think the issue Qualia has is it wants to be both a gonzo multiversal exploration and fully grounded in metaphysics and quantum mechanics and it struggles because the core stakes never change, making it seem kind of ponderous when it stops to do a meditation on the nature of perception in the middle of magical girl murder hour. There's no small victories, just more failures and more sacrifices until she realizes it's been in vain. I don't think it's necessarily wrong or a problem to have the lesson learned at the climax being "you can't change people's fates for them through self-sacrifice". But man, after dozens of chapters of Gaku just slamming her head into the wall, it does kind of feel like there's no rising action, just a march to a resolution. I think a longer denouement or epilogue would have helped, too.

I still liked the ideas and liked the novelty of how the parallel versions of her were explored, though, so I'm glad I followed along.

Even though I personally enjoyed it, I agree with this assessment of the shortcomings its execution.

Also it's nice to have a chat about where a story succeeds and fails!

It's really hard to express how much the landscape for gay media has changed since 2009 or so, because iirc that's the era where is was unthinkable that Korra and Asami were allowed to hold hands at the very end of their kid's show, but also a time when things like that were becoming possible, and afterward things started to change very fast. But I couldn't possibly speak to the context of what the landscape was like for light novels in Japan. The query just made me think about how unreal it is that things changed so quickly.

The idea that someone who is a minor might be gay or have a same sex crush isn't inherently inappropriate because being gay isn't a fetish, it's not some adults only sex thing. That's seriously scary rhetoric. I definitely experienced crushes on older women as a teen. It shouldn't be seen as any less wholesome or taboo to depict or discuss that than the extremely normal trope of a kid with a heterosexual older crush. (Depicted in a way that acknowledges that it happens not in a way that suggests its age appropriate).

That said, I get that the context here is this is all in the wake of that 'lesbian sub/dom' comment which was entirely beyond the pale and unquestionably sexualizing, and dealt with appropriately. But the comment after that which got probed doesn't feel great to see that get punished! It's not weird for a minor to be gay! I was a gay minor! The idea that gayness is sexual in the sense of always and only being about sex and acknowledging you can be lgbt and have those feelings as minor is inherently sexualizing and inappropriate is seriously harmful. Would the comment have been probed if the character was a boy and the commentator said it looked like he might be developing a crush?

Fully, this is a sore spot for me and the rhetoric around it/book bannings/the new right wing moral panic is really weighing on me right now, so if I'm overreacting, I'm prepared to accept that.

I mean. Teens get pregnant sometimes. I don't think it's inherently sus for a character to have a mother who has a mom that was a teen mom, that's a lot of actual people in the world's experience, and part of their life? The comic is pretty matter-of-fact about it.

Yeah, like I said I'll see where it goes. And at this point I trust the comic to treat the subject well, and I trust Tenebrais to not post something that takes a sudden left turn into creepsville. But yes, while teen pregnancy does happen in the real world, this isn't a real world thing, and people writing stories about sensitive topics can make mistakes, or be blind to their own weird attitudes about this or that. Also, teen pregnancy is not a topic I would ever think to include in a magical girl story (even one that's about trauma and survivor's guilt), so, like I said. It's just a weird curveball that I didn't see coming, and it has me wary, just because of the ways authors and artists can be weird about such topics historically.

Fair enough. I've read the comic and it is pretty matter of fact and nonweird about this particular plot point, if that makes you feel better. I understand wanting to judge for yourself.

I've read long-form comics that tell a satisfying story!
I think it's a particular challenge for webcomics for a few reasons, mostly coming down to what a tremendous amount of work making a comic is, which means for a (probably) one person creative team, the pace of updates is necessarily extremely slow and they aren't usually able to make it a job, slowing even more.

Furthermore, the format precludes editing the work as a whole, the work is released as finished- and in general the lack of an editor can lead to bigger quality dips or more directionlessness. And even if you nail all that, you have to retain the drive to tell the same story, very slowly, over the course of likely more than a decade. That's a big ask for many people, few of us can maintain that level of passion and interest in one specific creative work at a time. I can't blame someone for losing their passion to tell a story that they started as a teenager when they are thirty, for instance- that hypothetical writer is a very different person from who they were when they started the comic.
