What they didn't warn me about was how they'd hold up lines to smugly deride you about your dollar, your president, your healthcare... all sorts of political things that you, the 17 year-old girl in shoes had no control over. It really depends on where in Canada you're talking about. My girlfriends family is from the middle of nowhere Alberta and they are extremely friendly people (which is extremely at odds with their frankly bigoted opinions about some stuff). My experience with BC is that those people are total assholes and that Vancouver is basically tied with NYC in how self important people who are from there think they are. Paradoxically every Canadian I have met warns me about how mean people from Montreal are, but my experience visiting there was that everyone was extremely nice.

You nailed it, then. This was in Bellingham, a stone's throw from Vancouver. I certainly don't expect every Canadian to be like that, but it soured the hell out of me regarding their reputation for politeness. It was especially irritating that they'd use one hand to pat themselves on the back for it while using the other to slap you in the face.

Regina, on the other hand, was lovely.

Ghibli movies are excellently animated, at least. Miyazaki set out with the intention of emulating Disney animation in its technical proficiency and did a fuckin' ace job of it. As far as the medium goes television-wise, it's as lovely as a ton of Western produced animation, just in a different way.

I mean holy flying dog poo poo, is there anything uglier than a CG-animated TV show?

Unfortunately, animation is relegated to children's fare here in the States. I love me the gently caress out of some animation; it's fun as hell to breathe life into a series of images and it's fun as hell to watch other people nail the art of motion and marvel over their techniques and tech advancements that allow them fluidity that might have been impossible just a few years before. Behind the scenes stuff from LAIKA is goddamn mind-blowing and pencil tests from people like Sergio Pablos and Christian Retzlaff are loving magical. Or if you look at Richard William's work and consider the technique and skill required to accomplish what he did without the use of computers? And in such sheer perfection? gently caress.
Thing is, aside from the odd indie or foreign release, if you want to see an animated movie in this country you're probably going to have to see a children's movie. Throw in the fact that the most proficient studios in this country produce exclusively children's content. But I'd watch Sleeping Beauty a million times over to admire its secondary on clothing or Pinocchio for its soft-shading with motherfucking inked cels. I'll go see Moana to see its water tech and I'll watch Zootopia (there's an unpopular opinion, don't much care for that movie) marveling at how just a decade prior, rendering fur was such a massive strain that they could only have one character with it on-screen at a time. And now they've got 64 types of fur they're rendering? And each character has millions of hairs? poo poo!

Do most people have personal memories of believing in Santa and that being good? Because I can't remember that far back, so all I've got is memories of knowing that Santa wasn't real but that you shouldn't say that because adults seemed to be really invested in kids believing it for some reason. As far as I can remember, it's never seemed like a good thing to me.

My sisters talk about how much they enjoyed it, but my mom's a horror junkie and put a scary spin on Santa to make it exciting. They didn't tell me Santa was real but told me about all sorts of monsters. So I learned quickly not to believe everything I was told, but my imagination would always half-wonder and everything was a fun, scary adventure.
I have a distinct memory of being four and when my mom told me there was a clown outside (which I was terrified of at the time), I had enough skepticism to call her out on it. Unfortunately for me, there happened to be a clown outside on this particular occasion. (It was my sister's friend on Halloween, but you don't exactly put that together when you cynically look out the french doors to see Your Greatest Fear running toward your house.)
My point is, Santa should be scarier.

Definetly agree with this. I enjoy both as a setting. Sci fi I enjoy probably more than any other setting. A lot of sci fi and fantasy confuses tmi with being good.

Agreed! I was trying to think of how best to say, "I only like sci fi if it's the lesser classification of the genre," but referring to it as a setting instead really clarifies the idea. Alien and Moon were excellent not because they were sci fi, but because they used sci fi elements to strengthen the important factors of their primary genre. They both use sci fi to amplify the loneliness and helplessness of a horror and psychological drama rather than using technology as magic.

I say the Japanese were as bad as Nazis, in quality and quantity of their crimes.

First, I thought the Soviet deaths under Stalin were anywhere from 30-50 million (depending on sources) while the total for WW2 was 60 million? Even then, I'd argue genociding your own citizens for the crimes of shifting goalposts of loyalty is infinitely worse than war crimes.
Citizens were being abducted by their own government to the extent that there are accounts of people hearing a car drive up in the night, followed by multiple gunshots- not by the police, but by the citizens committing suicide. Because they knew what a car pulling up at night meant. And even after the announcement that Stalin died, people were in denial thinking it must be a trap and that if they said anything, they'd be taken away. So Stalin not only genocided his own people, but psychologically destroyed them for the remainder of his life and set the foundation of the USSR as a police state until the 1990's. And there's still bizarre poo poo coming out of Russia like that.

e: I'd also contest in that Russian misinformation and advising was directly responsible for Mao's famines.
