Vegans and vegetarians are fine and make some good points

It's also fine to be a vegan but still get drunk and eat a bar cheeseburger, or some of nana's thanksgiving turkey or whatever. Nobody is ever 100% consistent and pure

Almost everyone is racist, ok, maybe. If your racism is contained within your thoughts no one cares. Don't act on it. What you do matters more than what you think.

Most people are subconsciously racist and don't have racist thoughts, which is a lot harder to fight. It's not so much what you think, although you're right about it being what you do. It's societal and often relegated to the subconscious, which is why you'll get MAGA-hatted Trump voters going "Heavens no, I love hispanic people!"

Speaking of racism, is there a reason "latinx" seems to be the preferred term at least among very progressive people these days? I get removing the gendering of it but my UPO is we have hispanic and latin american as ungendered english versions of the word without making up a silly portmanteau. Do those word have a bad connotation, honest question?

Also, related to fried foods, I laugh when people get all huffy about how disgusting x unhealthy food item is. It happens on SA a lot, in almost any subforum if you mention food, especially in relation to health, you'll get people just chiming in about meal prep and slow cookers and so easy to be healthy, plus McDonalds makes me have the shits for a week! Aioli is disgusting! I eat my pancakes dry! This even happens if you're talking about like, obesity's correlation with poverty, or food deserts. Some goon gonna ask why everyone doesn't meal prep some slow cooker bean-n-pea chili slop for 10c a meal. Cuz that's definitely tastier than a McChicken.

Eat reasonably but jeez, you can have lovely and great fried foods and fatty foods and sweet foods just like with any other method of prep. I used to be a wok cook, which if you don't know means frying everything and it's hilarious how people would think of our food as this healthy, reasonable choice. It wasn't really unhealthy by any means but literally your whole dish was submerged in oil, veggies and all. Also oils have different tastes that affect the dish, guy who thinks all fried food tastes like "oil". Lol if you're doing a pad thai in olive oil or whatever. I also worked in a mexican kitchen and people loved the "sautéed"fajita veggies. What actually happened is they got submerged in vegetable grease for 20 seconds. That's fine, it tastes good, they're still low-calories delicious veggies.

Basically you're broken if you can't enjoy unhealthy food taste-wise. Even crap like McDonald's, the poo poo tastes good. That's why it's popular. That's why McDonald's exists even in places like loving inner-city Strasbourg where every third business is serving delicious, traditional, well-made food in a beautiful building. Liking crap is natural.

Related, imo Dominos and Pizza Hut are better than 90% of local pizzerias. Actual restaurants that specialize in pizza? Delicious and incomparable. The corner greasy-spoon pizzeria that does delivery and is totally better than that pizza hut crap? Typically no. I associate the local Gino's Slices type pizza place with oversized, floppy pies that drip grease all over you and I'm rarely proven wrong. Plus the chains are going crazy with options. If the pizza is going to be mediocre anyway, hell yeah I'll take pretzel crust or buffalo saucing or whatever. Hell, Pizza Pizza the canadian chain, when I lived there last year, had the option of doing a sweet chili sauce instead of the tomato. Surprisingly good, and far better than Bubba's Pizza, the local place which people only frequented for the poutine.

EDIT: poutine is delicious, traditional or topped with almost anything, and if you disagree then go die

EDIT 2: Agreed that lala land sucked rear end. Felt more like a love letter from beautiful, privileged, talented Hollywood stars and crew to themselves.

Maybe not unpopular but the knife to the head thing they all do in that show is the worst drat part of it. It doesn't even apply to the rule of cool, it's stupid as gently caress. Machetes or baseball bats or frying pans or like anything else would be way cooler.

My PHUO for today is that people who act like Obama and Bush are "the same" are idiots.

I'm pretty drat left-wing, FDR is far and away my presidential fave, and yeah there's a shitload Obama can be criticized for.

Drone reign of terror or no, though, Obama did not launch any full-on wars. Two of my cousins (not to mention countless and counting iraqis and afghans) died because of the Bush admin. Obama is guilty of not stopping some things, Bush is guilty of STARTING a host of awful things.

The US has a shitload of problems, it's definitely not the best place to be born, but otoh it's pretty progressive in a lot of ways and not some dystopian fascist hellhole. Nor is Sweden or wherever some socialist paradise. Americans who moan about how uniquely awful the place has it need to get some damned perspective.

Euros who moan about US imperialism get a special shoutout, Europe had a shot at global superpower and collectively shat over the world so hard that the US looks nice in comparison, and half the Continent is still the sort of people who talk about the perfidious Jew and his lies. I know how easy it is to be socially progressive when your grandparents passed universal healthcare with the unspoken rule that it applied only to proper people of true (x nation) stock, but in practice the whole west is in the same burning house and we all need to address it.

Related, people who get smug about other people being ignorant even if they themselves have held more or less the same worldview all their life, can gently caress right off. Johan Q. Sverigesson thinks universal healthcare is great and that John Q. West Virginia is a drooling moron? No poo poo, they're both parroting what their society tells them. Regardless of whether you're objectively right or not, challenging your inherited worldview is hugely more difficult and admirable than agreeing with what 90% of your country does. Being swedish is a privilege a lot of people would die to have a chance at. Having the opportunity to read enough about sociology to form an educated opinion on x thing is something beyond the reach of a lot of perfectly decent people. Swedish guy gets a foreign language drilled into his head from day one and ample opportunity to use it, virginian guy gets maybe two years of lovely spanish classes and no opportunity to interact with non-english-speakers... Yeah, the fact that the swedish guy is multilingual and the virginian guy struggles with "quesadilla" is not a reflection of either's worth or intellect.

There is really no significant anti-US sentiment in Europe, and to what little extent anti-US sentiments exists, it is largely confined to fringe, extreme left or extreme right political groups, and are absolutely dwarfed by the resentment between European countries themselves, like Germany and Greece, or anyone and Turkey.

Europe is so overwhelmingly pro-US that anyone talking about a European anti-US sentiment comes across as if they have absolutely no idea what they are talking about and are buying into some kind of Cold War scare of a big unified communist Europe that hates freedoms, which is frightfully stupid, as pro-US sentiments are massive in even eastern Europe. Eastern Europe probably holds the most positive view of US influence on world history of anywhere, including the US itself.

Now let me discuss Bush with your grandma on the subway.

Jk, and idk if you're responding directly to me, but I mostly agree with your PHUO. My post was honestly directed more at americans than europeans but I went on a bit of a tangent.

There is certainly a trend among both sides of the Atlantic to judge americans via pop culture and government but not so for citizens of x european nation, which irks me because we are 95% similar and all our nations have plenty of assholes who'd vote Trump and think Muslims are an existential threat.

PHUO is that it's silly how having grandparents that migrated somewhere suddenly stops you from being x culture in any way but makes you permanently y culture in exchange. Half-latina girl from San Bernadino, answer for the Trail of Tears!!

If that girl gets blame for Andrew Jackson then yeah, polish folks get blame for Friedrich der Grosse or whoever.

I hate having dogs bc at some point you're going to have to leave the house or ignore them or something and they're distressed by it and don't understand. Affectionate cats can still be chill by themselves, and snakes/lizards/fish are the best bc they look cool, eat and poo poo less, and don't give a poo poo about you. They're a hobby, not a baby, and that's cool and good.

It's still pretty inconsiderate because when (not if) your cat darts out in front of my car I'll have to deal with your weepy rear end demanding me to buy you a new cat and trying to get the cops to arrest me. It just seems conflicting sometimes - people keep saying how much they love their cat and will be destroyed if it dies, but at the same time will let it loose in high traffic areas or in places where predators like coyotes are active. Where I grew up you probably saw coyotes every couple days or so, yet people still let their cats out and act like they couldn't have seen it coming when the cat goes missing.

Anyway, non-pet opinion: I don't like "al dente" pasta. I like it cooked a little more than that. I know it's technically wrong and basically any chef would disagree with me, but I just don't like almost-crunchy pasta. Also I can barely tell the difference between fresh pasta and premade/frozen so I don't really care what the restaurant uses, but this one may be because I've destroyed my palate with alcohol.

Also, idiots who let their dogs off the leash in the front yard or wherever. The stupid thing will inevitably bolt off after a person/dog/anything and the moron owners will chase after all apologetic. That's not only rude and a hassle for passers-by but dangerous for the dog. My aunt's will do this at least a few times a week. Worse is when the owner just ineffectually stands there yelling while the dog ignores them.

PHUO: the gently caress is America the country and who is trumpeting that?

Trump lost the popular vote. Most americans are in favour of universal health care and not droning anyone.

The loving number one consumers of "MURIKKKA" jokes are americans.

Americans have a bad government and many are in lovely spots. As a whole however they are in the same place as the rest of "western civilization," but with ideals stronger than "our country is cute and we are so accepting, goodbye nazis hello Geert!!"

Trump and myself alike are literally a couple generations removed from being german.

Germans should either accept Trump as one of their own or forever accept that all their culture and history up to about 1850 is as american as it is german. Same goes for Bush, but replace german with english.

Y'all were genociding non-white peoples alongside us (your loyal colonists) for centuries before Trump's USA was an apple in his eye, and being born to the folks that stayed home absolves you of nothing.

It's prolly not unpopular in this thread, but it is here: I'm back in my tiny Texas hometown for a few months and imo these people should stop putting out confederate flags. It's funny to see them, but also really depressing to imagine, say a black family on a road trip, they need gas or snacks and our town is right here on the interstate... But then they see Jethro McAsshole's rebel flag flying on the exit and rightfully turn their asses around to stop at greener pastures. We are better than this bullshit, fellow hicks :(

I have a neighbour who flies a rebel flag right next to the US flag and every time I walk by it I mentally chant "Battle Cry of Freedom".
