I never post in GIP anymore, but I used to be on the McCain back in 2004-2007 ish. I was an ET, I think my bunk was right where they got hit. Looks like half of CE is unaccounted for.

:(

It's like seeing your childhood home get hit by a meteor.

For the people asking about manual steering, there's a way to do it, but it's on some ridiculous ratio, you'd have to spin the wheel hundreds of times to shift a degree.

When I was aboard, 7 was where I stayed, it's a little tiny one, right?

I had the top bunk closest to the hull, it had a ton of pipes running right above it, so I couldn't even sit up, the one perk of top bunk.

I heard a rumor that the unaccounted 9 are trapped in a comm space or something. I don't see how that makes sense, as the only space that matches is Aft IC and it's got two escape routes.

Something similar happened to my friend who was really into D&D.

One of the RDCs called him into the office to show the new cool book that had come out, still in shrink wrap.

"This just came out, you want to take a look at it?"

And then the guillotine dropped and he got to do push-ups for an hour, looking at the front cover of the book.

I was on the McCain a decade ago and I'm pretty sure they had a Furuno for the exact reasons described. If a foreign power wants to do electromagnetic analysis on a piece of commercial equipment, they could just order one from a catalog.

When I was in Forward IC on a destroyer, I got a new OS knocking looking for "Link Cord" (They use a radio channel called Link coord, to coordinate link traffic)

I found out that he'd been all over the ship, so I gave him a coil of casualty power cables. Those things are just big enough that they don't easily squeeze through the hatches.

The joke was partially on me because I had to put the cables back, but I was able to lower them down an escape trunk.

The Navy Times article made me really sad.

If we're conducting these surveys and not acting on them, what's the point.

My congresswoman is super active on the subject of veteran mental health and suicide, there needs to be an investigation of punitive actions against people who report suicidal thoughts.

It's really bumming me out to imagine all the spaces that I used to hang out in completely flooded.
It really doesn't feel like that long ago that I was hanging out under the escape trunk in the IC Gyro room, playing Space Empires 2. We had a movie server back there that we'd play Firefly and Weeds on channel 19 (I think).

I was thinking the other day about how everyone seemed to know a story about a woman who faked claims of being raped for some reason.

Now I'm wondering how many times someone really was raped, and then a bunch of chiefs laid down a huge guilt trip about how they were ruining the career of a fine sailor and that it's going to leave a family homeless.

We've all heard stories about families that have the creepy uncle that you don't want to leave alone with the kids, but nobody wants him to go to jail. Why would a Navy family be any different?

I was just thinking about some of the people I served with who broke new ground in being fuckups and kept the spotlight off of idiots like me who were just bad at Navy.

One guy broke a toilet after trying to flush an apple.

And then there was the time a guy decided to use a four day weekend to drive to Maine, from San Diego to visit family.

And then there was a guy who had some sort of storage unit or something on base and was keeping a pet cat in there, and he either got caught or the cat died.
