you could work for an employee owned company instead of just being a member of a union. you won't have to pay union dues. you can cash out by selling your share to other employees and quitting.

Honestly those traditional pension obligations are being defaulted on or negotiated down these days. They're hardly the sure thing they once were. (they still are better, even after default, than scab scraps though!)

yeah a few years ago staff at the university of sydney went on strike and the bosses encouraged staff & students to scab so the IT staff pulled the network offline

it probably helped that it was a few CJs in an otherwise non-IT union tho

i work for a state college / hospital that's currently outsourcing a huge chunk of IT (and getting wrecked by the press by it, deservedly.) The university professional and technical workers union is in a really good spot to swoop us all up

they'll outsource the rest of us if it happens but i'd still vote for it just to put the screws to them
