Because the Crows are playing at Thebarton Oval, rather than somewhere with actual transport links, I have to choose between 90 minutes on a bus and hoping the ground isn't full, or driving and hoping I get a park

Anyone else notice that in the first quarter the clock counted up SANFL style, but in the second quarter it counted down AFL style?

Chairchucker posted:On the other hand, the Crows have an Olympic basketball silver medallist on the roster, and she is my favourite, along with Chelsea Randall and Ebony Marinoff who are also my favourites, and will kick all the goals. (OK maybe just Marinoff will kick all the goals because of those three she's the only player in the forward line.) Randall is a forward too, she'll just be playing further up the ground because she's good enough to, and is really going to have to as well, like all the big AFL key forwards who played midfield for their private high school because they were just that much better.

As soon as my phone is charged I'm off to drive to catch a tram to walk to see some footy, hopefully I get there early enough to get in Heading in alone because my Dad thinks they're all "lesbos", over 30 and would be pensioned off if they were men, and should be playing at practise grounds because no one is going to go anyway, and I haven't been able to get even one friend interested NTRabbit fucked around with this message at 04:40 on Feb 4, 2017 |

I think the GWS ruck is the biggest woman I've ever seen in person, but she's big like Liz Cambage, low jump and not hugely mobile. Metcalfe has nearly 30cm on her after jumping, and she's got some quality palming skills, certainly the most impressive of the four rucks I've seen so far. The Marinator is boss though, and Phillips seems to have a huge fitness advantage. She is an Olympian coming off a WNBA season, so it's expected. Looks like at least 8k here.

ZombieJesus posted:The handballing I've seen on display in the women's games so far has been considerably poorer than the mens, is that an upper body strength thing or because handballing is a more difficult thing that benefits from added years of training? Both. Takes practise, repetition, and muscle memory to get the technique and timing right, takes upper body strength to be able to launch it a meaningful speed and distance. Getting all of these things perfect results in Mark Ricciuto, which is rare, but they'll get better.

CA has real problems right now, and I'm not sure they even realise half of them, or just how much danger from the AFL they're in, they're just far too adept at head in the sand.

cmndstab posted:I was at the game too Had a great time despite the rain. Great to finally see the team play, you can really tell the difference between athletes from other sports and the rest. Phillips was brilliant in the second half and Randall is a machine. Marinof was brilliant. The first tap of the game was a nice bit of wrist work that went straight into the bread basket of a sprinting Marinator, which set the tone, though she made a bit of a nervy fumble if memory serves and didn't get a clean kick away. Also, neither ruck girl was as tall as I thought they were, a trick of perspective and standing next to a lot of really short team mates - the GWS ruck is the tallest in the comp, but still shorter than me. Given that most, if not all, of the GSs and GKs in the ANZ championship, and quite a few of the GDs and GAs, are taller than I am, I was expecting the same.

NFL is a sport best experienced in highlights packages I've found https://twitter.com/Adelaide_FC/status/828731896913764354?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw Marinoff and Western Bulldogs defender Bailey Hunt both received nominations in Round One. quote:The eligibility for the AFL Women’s Rising Star award is the same as in the men’s competition. Nominees must be under the age of 21 at January 1, 2017, and have played no more than 10 games. The overall winner must also not have been suspended during the season. NFL franchises move, Colleges don't - plus the migratory nature of their college system makes it more than just a home town thing. It's not a huge surprise to learn that the most passionate set of NFL fans are the ones that support the only franchise that will never relocate, because they own it. Also College football is pretty much all run and gun, whereas NFL is pragmatic and defensive. NTRabbit fucked around with this message at 17:14 on Feb 7, 2017 |

quote:HAWKS IN FOR CROWS MID? Adelaide: quote:ADELAIDE’S midfield depth has been dealt a serious blow as revelations Brad Crouch has suffered another serious hamstring injury. quote:I was down at training and left pretty soon after it finished, while the players signed autographs. Brad was sitting out the front of the cafe, in his civvies. I had a chat to him and asked him if he was ok - said he'd mildly strained the string again and it was the 3rd time this pre-season. Said he couldn't feel it when he ran, but when kicking it was pretty sore. Was going to see a specialist sometime in the near future - he seemed pretty flat about the whole thing. Adelaide:
