I picked this up recently and I like it a lot, although it is not better than Dawn of War :colbert:

I loving hate data capture missions. I always grab the data just before they grab it back and warp away.

I totally hosed up everything in my current playthrough and would do things very differently if I could do it all again.

It seems to me that the best strategy is to pick a roster of the gunniest ships, the ones with the plasma macros, and take the +range +accuracy macro skills/upgrades and upgrade crew gunnery, maybe taking a few lance upgrades eventually as well for the battleships with lots of lances. Then have them drift around with the enemies in heir gun arc while a +sensor range destroyer or two spots for them. This will only help with general killing missions, so you also need some type of boarding/ordnance bay cruiser or battlecruiser for data retrieval type nonsense.

Some of the missions get really hard, like the ones where you have to prevent a bajillion strong enemy ships from even reaching a randomly-placed orbital bombardment spot. Or data retrieval missions featuring a legendary enemy ship. You get 500 renown for killing legendaries, though, and it's actually much easier than succeeding in a data retrieval mission featuring one.

So this is the data retrieval mission that pissed me off. The Chaos ship ran for the board edge I finally got one cruiser close enough to board it, did so got the plans and then they grabbed the plans back and jumped away before my second cruiser got close enough. Was so annoyed I stopped playing right there even though I didn't need to, immediately taking the plans back is stupid especially when you aren't prepared or warned about it.

Sounds like a typical data retrieval mission to me. They are just the worst.

Personally I've always been a big fan of the Deathwatch. The whole, recruted from all manner of other chapters to murder the gently caress out of all the aliens is pretty cool. Plus, it's a really distinctive look. Black, with one silver arm. I'm just sad they never did the Ordo Xenos book when they did the Ordo Malius and Ordo Hereticus

You can't pick Deathwatch as your favorite space marine chapter. That's like saying your favorite Beatles album is Beatles' Greatest Hits.

I don't particularly care for space marines. I like the hive scum of Necromunda and ork gangz of Gorkamorka.

I wish those games would get a Mordheim: City of the Damned type video game. That game is alright, by the way. Just don't expect fair multiplayer. And don't play the campaign missions, especially as Chaos. Unless you like turn-based teleporter mazes.

Later on you can get some pretty decent upgrade slots for your transports that increase their survivability but convoy defense is always a bit tricky.

Convoy attack on the other hand is pretty easy most of the time. You can always send in a bunch of suicide escorts to ram the enemy transports again and again while flinging macro rounds at them. Since they're escorts, it doesn't matter if they get chewed up by enemy guns or not.

All ships get additional turrets and a dorsal long range lance. All ships, cruiser and above, can replace Torpedoes with Nova cannons. All ships roll on a chart for additional, mechanicus-exclusive upgrades that include long range turrets, double hits from lances, and hilariously accurate broadsides.

All of their ships are also 10% more expensive, and they don't really have many carrier vessels. Their most affordable one is a light cruiser with 2 launch bays and no other guns.

That sounds like a really easy expansion that might be kind of fun.

A Tyranids expansion sounds more fun, but like someone pointed out it's a lot of extra and different art assets and a lot of extra scripting to make their fleet work in a way that feels authentic.

I fought that nurgle flagship during a data retrieval mission and it was a nightmare. I blew up the flagship but failed the mission by a pretty huge margin.

seriously my whole strat for the flagships was universally 'get them lined up for parallel ramming by two of my own ships, then alternate Full Speed Ahead'

you might suffer some casualites, but you're practically guaranteed to kill it if your ships are built for it, and why the devil would you build ships to do anything else

I set up for damaging, accurate, long range macro fire like a responsible servant of the Emperor and it...well it worked for some things.

It actually didn't work out that well. This game can be pretty hard.

An overview of the Archenemy. An extremely powerful early game fleet, and I wish we got a Chaos campaign expansion.

I love the Kroot sphere because its the dumbest thing. It's great even though it is useless.

Also, I've streamed 2 hours of Man O' War Corsair, the Warhammer Fantasy ship game, and in roughly half an hour from this post I'll be streaming it again.

I'm gonna tune in to Man O' War. Ever since they put Captain's skills and more time compression/waypoint options in I've been having a lot of fun with it. I don't play it at work, though. Why would you even accuse me of such a thing?

This news about DoW 3 bums me out, because I just recently got a new desktop to run games like DoW 3 that my work laptop can't handle, but I had assumed (optimistically) from glancing at previews that DoW 3 would incorporate the best parts of the first two, because I loved both those games for different reasons.

Doesn't bum me out that much though. At least now I won't have to play Total Warhammer at 1280 windowed resolution or whatever I was doing to get it to run smooth.
