Welcome to the Miscellaneous Auto Racing Megathread of 2017. This is the place to discuss racing that isn’t NASCAR, F1, Indycar, and Formula E. Mainly it’s been WeatherTech Championship Series or the World Endurance Championship or British Touring Car Championship. Other stuff is welcome like all the GT3 championships in the world (Pirelli World Challenge, Blancpain, regional GT3 championships), WTCC, Formula E, what have you. Racing Series’ This is the premier that all of the manufactures want to compete in and win. This is the 5th year under the FIA this championship is running with . Schedule this year hasn't really changed this year. Classes include LMP1, LMP2, GTE-Pro, GTE-Am. In LMP1 last year, Porsche was again the team to beat but also Audi and Toyota were much stronger though both of them let races slip through their hands most notably Toyota in the last 5 minutes. Due to Dieselgate, Audi is leaving leaving a new R18 stillborn, Joest has to find a new project to do and LMP1 is now in a dangerous situation with only 2 manufactures in it's top class... oh and the forgettable Bykolles team as well. LMP2, car counts are looking up with Rebellion joining LMP2 and general excitement for the new LMP2 cars. Manufacturers include Riley/Multimatic, Ligier, Dallara, and Oreca. DPi's are not allowed at Le Mans or any WEC race which are based on LMP2 cars. GTE=Pro and Am is business as usual with many teams and a couple manufactures having their big dogs running for the championship and many fans crying Corvette isn’t running full time. Schedule 16 April: 6 Hours of Silverstone, GBR 06 May: 6 Hours of Spa, BEL 17/18 June: 24 Hours of Le Mans, FRA 16 July: 6 Hours of Nürburgring, DEU 03 September: 6 Hours of Mexico City 16 September: 6 Hours of Circuit of the Americas, USA 15 October: 6 Hours of Fuji, JPN 05 November: 6 Hours of Shanghai, CHN 18 November: 6 Hours of Bahrain, BAH The European Le Mans Series is actually a good rear end series with tons and tons of prototype racing and some GT racing. Helps having a super strong LMP2 count since it’s the cheaper than using LMP1 and has made a big step in power in the new LMP2 class. With the driver ranking system allowing a silver or bronze driver in the car, it makes guys who have wads of cash from their totally respectable, not breaking any laws whatsoever businesses and race fast cars. LMP3 cars are starting to get their car counts up very well and getting many competitive teams together. Also GTE class, nothing too special in the class though. Schedule March 28-29 Prologue (Monza) April 15 Silverstone May 14 Monza July 23 Red Bull Ring Aug. 27 Paul Ricard Sept. 24 Spa-Francorchamps October 22 Portimao The 4th Season of WTSC, IMSA, whatever you want to call it. The big thing to watch for this year is the completely new look to the Prototype class. Still uses 2 different cars but we now have the new LMP2 class and the modified LMP2 class which uses their own bodywork and engine, Daytona Prototype International. So far car counts will be massive with the impending death of LMPC. All of the rich guys are taking their ball to LMP2 which will allow them to go to Le Mans. Manufacturers that have thrown their hat in is Cadillac (3 cars), Mazda (2 cars), and Nissan (2 cars). GTLM as always will be a barn burner with a new Porsche to move the engine up to a mid engine car and continued fighting by everyone else. GTD continues to get stronger with Acura and Lexus bringing about their new cars. With the usage of GT3 equipment, more and more int'l teams are thinking of racing in America such as the Land Motorsport team, Grasser Racing Team (Lamborghini factory team), Manthey, and others who were rumored to race at Daytona. Went back and found the old misc and Daytona threads. Anyone remember any other threads from archives unless I have to do the good old brute force look at every thread. There was some on Dakar and that'll I'll probably go back for.

I think this year we're gonna hit the VIR races, cause the tickets and RV spots are dirt effing cheap. I'm thinking of heading down for 2018 as well. I waited too long this year to do it. I've got some friends from the IMSA Fans FB group (a very interesting lot since they're mostly millennials) and would love to see the race first hand.

Cygni posted:The WEC P2 grid is all ORECA. Not a single entry from another brand. And there is already talk that Riley may pull the plug. The FIA/ACO are bad. One way that everyone flocked to Oreca is the older P2 car, the 05, monocoque and other parts as I've heard can be upgraded to the 07 which why buy a new car rather just buy a cheap 05 and upgrade it for cheaper. It'll be cathartic when P1 and P2 collapse and DPi is the top class in world sports car racing.

From what I'm guessing, GM is super protective of who races and he'll makes their cars for racing in the states. Stevenson Motorsports probably wanted to use the Cadillac but GM probably said no so they went to Audi.

Don't think the final lead change in a race has been correctly guessing which blocked lane will move first. Also was that crowd cheering in the replay from the replay live cause I'd say Klingmann has every right to punch the Lexus driver.

harperdc posted:Listening to Midweek Motorsport, if you're at all interested in the WEC "super season" then it's a must-listen. They have interviews with both the head of the ACO and the head of IMSA, and while there's a loooot to take in, one point is that the Sebring double-headers will not be twin 12-hour races. Scott Atherton with IMSA was very insistent that there is one 12 Hours of Sebring, it will not be a combined race so therefore the WEC race will be shorter (or have a tricky name). It also sounds like the details we have are very much so the first draft of things to come, so expect updates and changes in the next 1.5 years ahead of that Sebring weekend. I've got a feeling if Toyota leaves after Le Mans or Fuji, they'll BoP the P1 cars to DPi and just have a big field for a joint WEC/IMSA race. It's so far out from 2019 Sebring that they could change their mind on it and say welp WEC field is small so lets just push them with IMSA and not have a mass suicide ritual in the infield by alcohol poisoning. Year and a half ago we weren't talking about Audi or Porsche being gone and WEC looking very strong. Could go many ways and early days for what this super season. How many cars can we fit in the Sebring pits?

WindyMan posted:Entries were capped to 63 cars in 2013. That was the last ALMS race there and also the last appearance of the Audis at Sebring. Be a tight fit with 55 cars at Daytona this year so add 3-4 P1s, GTE would add a few more and wonder if Ford and Porsche compresses their driver lineups. I could see it happening but hard to say and if this is first draft stuff, sounds like ti'll change a bunch of times by Spa next year and hell by this time next year they're still changing things.

WindyMan posted:I'm perplexed as to why they still don't have separate colors for the Protos and the GTLM cars. Same with the PC and GTD cars before PC went away. OK, you want red to designate the pro classes, but there are plenty of situations where it's handy to be able to differentiate at-a-glance between P and GTLM, like in the spotters guides or especially in the scoreboard tickers. I'd say let protos not take any colors anymore and give GTLM the red for distinction. I think the same colors was to designate between pro and am and think people are smart enough the cars are different enough you can tell between an FLM-09 and a fleet of GT3 cars. I'm gonna get an energy drink, my cat sleep next, to me and bang out the OP for the new thread. Thanks for reminding me iospace.
