starcraft 2 sincerely doesn't transfer to anything else. No, somebody pretty familiar with the basics and maybe even some of the advanced aspects that are universal to those sort of RTS might get along fine but a grandmaster that steps into a game like World In Conflict is probably likely to get fisted by me with my collector's edition berlin wall rock just because he was expecting something much dumber and far more different, and inferior, for babies, from blizard, instead of someone capable of making games that dont suck and i never played multiplayer in that one, i just don't have half my brain wired up to play starcraft lmao

i used to be way into both solo and multiplayer rts games but i genuinely am way burned out on high level play, and i can't just play those games like a doofus like i'm still 10. It's more fun to play a well built campaign and laugh at everyone dedicating time and effort to perfecting strategies just so they can say they defeated another player with their hardcore brilliant tactical mind.

I blame dota 2. Dota 2 killed the love.

I loving hate people who ruin otherwise good solo RTS play with a bunch of mechanics that suck rear end unless you're playing competitively

brood war is impressive to watch and i dont want to take away from the people who play like that, but that comes from an era in RTS games where the game was made to be fun, serious competition arose out of a fun game. Everything since has been trying to put that lightning in a bottle including sc2/expansions.

I can have a serious amount of fun playing the campaigns in starcraft, whereas in SC2 the campaigns are miserable shlock and the multiplayer is straight up more fun, but because it's built for competition and constantly developed around that central idea, it's kinda poo poo. There's no real option to 'take it easy' unless you like playing retarded modified maps and game modes

the Diablo series straight up never rises above the heights of the first game, which is very good. Because they were subsequently made when blizzard was objectively shittier than the company that released Diablo 1.

Blizzard hasn't released a really good game since Diablo 1/Warcraft 2. Diablo 2/lod was okay, warcraft 3 was bad, world of warcraft was a good MMO until they merged with activision, who then began to immediately patch out any difficulty in the game and turned it into a retarded lil treadmill for babies.

WoW peaked with patch 1.13

Legitimaltely i think they're overrated but holy lol i woul need to rethink my life if i was really that mad about people enjoying those boring 2.5d games.

the n64 controller was weird if you assumed you would need the D-pad.

but you didn't ever need the loving d-pad EVER. left hand on the middle grip, right on right.

95% of games called for this. You would sometimes need to move over tot he D-pad for some classic game collections and things but any title including goldeneye you had one excellent grip that's all you needed.

the worst part of that controller was the blisters you'd get on your thumb from playing too long.

yeah I eat rear end posted:

Claiming people only like old games because of nostalgia is stupid. Maybe some people don't want a game that takes a lot of "skill" or "finesse" to play and would rather actually have fun games, even if the graphics suck.

I've said it before but nowadays games are either some stupid ultra-competitive thing trying to cash in on the "esports" fad while it lasts, or a single player game with great graphics but lovely plot and gameplay. If you look at the progression from Morrowind to Skyrim you clearly see the graphics quality going up about as fast as they stripped everything away that made Morrowind so fun. Or San Andreas -> GTA4/5 - same deal, better graphics and more realism but none of the parts that made SA so great. So yeah, there is a little nostalgia for when they actually made good+fun games, but that's hardly the only reason. The fact that they are more fun than modern games is what makes me keep playing them.

I'm saying that 2.5D shooters are not fun because they lack meaningful game mechanics beyond "move, jump, and click". No aim, no thinking, nothing. "shoot" guys, find the key, and keep exploring or open the next door and finish the level. I found that boring when it was brand new, and nothing about it has become better with age.

I don't like modern shooters either. Overly cinematic vapid trash. There was a sweet spot in the late 90s and early 00s where things were good. Unreal Tournament, counter-strike, half-life 1/2, the original Call Of Duty, perfect dark, Tribes 1 and 2, and maybe some others im comitting a mortal sin by forgetting but the genre started out as hot garbage horse poo poo that was notable for being controversial and that's it.

If you liked it that's fine, but if you still like it, it's nostalgia, and you cannot escape that, sorry. wolf 3d, doom, and quake are straight up loving bad games by modern standards, or the standards of 15 years ago.

it would be one thing if there was some doubt about the nature of the new synths, like how they were made? maybe they're just kidnapped wastelanders? NOPE. instead the main story forces you to take a tour where you literally witness a synth production line. There is no loving ambiguity here.

Bust Rodd posted:

The 3D Fallout games are uniformly bland and boring. As far as sandboxes go, there is like nothing to do and everything is just garbage recycled assets.

The games themselves are just a handful of poorly designed and clunky mechanics held together with string.

It's embarrassing that a game that contains mutants and power armor and lasers and toxic bear-wolves conveys all of this to you so poorly and that so much of it hinges on a storyline that literally, actually, no one gives a gently caress about.

I played FO 3, and the only good quest is when you get stuck in the AI's Leave it to Beaver/Pleasantville world, and skimming any YouTube video tells me that NV is just the same lovely game but maybe good writing and FO4 is just actually as bad. Why these games are getting prestige while Prey is getting picked over is staggering to me lol

You owe it to yourself to play new vegas. Yeah it reuses assets but so did Fallout 2 and it managed to surpass its predecessor. The tangible value of new assets on gameplay is pretty limited, fallout 4 demonstrates that well.

New vegas isn't just better written, the game is balanced better. Energy is viable from the start, you can be a punchman or melee man and it's a viable build not just a stupid loving hamstrung gimmick to play for laughs. F3 is basically impossible to play without using vats, and new vegas has iron sighting and more often than not it's better to just play it like a straight up shooter. The world makes sense. The capital wasteland and boston are a bunch of nonsense dropped on top of a crumbling city map, new vegas takes some effort to make the wasteland feel alive, as much as the engine would permit in 2010 anyway. The retarded Karma system is still in-game, but functionally totally useless, and is more or less replaced by a robust faction system that actually does meaningful things to your gameplay experience.

I won't keep sucking NV's dick because i doubt I can sell you on trying it really, but if you see it on sale for cheap on steam, you should pick it up. The main story is excellent and the worst piece of DLC is still okay, and the best of it is really good.
