7th Dragon is an JRPG made in 2009 by Imageepoch (the company proceeded to go bankrupt in 2015). It was produced by Rieko Kodama, one of the leading artists and later director for the Phantasy Star series, and it was directed by Kazuya Niinou, who also directed the first Etrian Odyssey game. It's pretty easy to see the influences from Etrian Odyssey here, as it has a lot in common, to the point where it feels almost derivative and doesn't really have its own identity. The later games would be much better about differentiating themselves. However, unlike Etrian Odyssey, it's not a dungeon crawler, just a regular JRPG, where you create your own band of characters and go around slaying dragons. Sounds like fun, huh? Anyways, as mentioned before, it is part of a series, which only consists of 4 games. Unfortunately, only the 4th game, 7th Dragon III Code: VFD got an official English release, where the others never left Japan.

That is, until a goon by the name of Pokeytax completed a fan translation of the game in 2014. (And the 2nd and 3rd games later on.) You can find the fan translations for those here.

If you're wondering why there are 2 patches for the game, well... I won't lie, the game has some problems. It's very rough around the edges, but the two biggest problems the game has are the ridiculously high encounter rates, and the damage tiles. There are damage tiles everywhere, which take off a decent chunk of your party's HP and dealing with them is very tedious. One of the patches just translates the text, and leaves the rest of the game alone. The USA patch translates the game, but also halves the encounter rate, and heavily lowers the amount of damage the party takes from damage tiles, eliminating the two biggest problems with the game. If you plan on playing this game, please play the humane patch. The game is rough enough around the edges as it is. With that said, I did enjoy my time with the game, and hope to show if off to all of you.

I'll be playing with said humane patch, and this will be a narrative LP, where I take submissions for characters and write in some lines for them and such.

Spoiler Policy

Considering that the only game that was released outside of Japan was the 4th game, I'd appreciate it if spoilerific discussion of the first 3 games didn't happen at all. You can discuss the 4th game, but please do tag and label your spoilers in that case.

Character List

Blaze Dragon's character: Stella the Fighter

A loud, clearly eccentric woman with a passion for her job. Her absolute inspirations are the latest anime she watched the heroes of old, and she has no goal but to become one as good or even better than those. As such, she's constantly boisterous, ready to charge at any problem head-on, and with a giant grin on her face when she gets to show off. She likes showing off. In fact, she likes showing off so much that she'll loudly exclaim just how much she's doing so, so people can realize she is, indeed, showing off. This is usually done by long chants and complex attack names that are undeniably chuuni as gently caress very heroic! She also likes having other people follow her in her heroic exploits, thus her wish to join said people in a guild so they can be very heroic together!

Logicblade's character: Ark the Rogue

Ark is an exile from her home village with an urge to take anything that isn't tied down to the ground. Her goals in life are simple; to get rich, make friends and to eat sweets, and she'll do whatever it takes to achieve those goals. She's cunning, but is about as emotionally sensitive as a rock and doesn't really get social etiquette, which often finds herself with far more enemies than friends, despite her best intentions. She took to adventuring because it was the fastest way to achieve her dream (and maybe come back to her home village when she's rich and famous).

blizzardvizard's character: Haru the Samurai

Life as a gardener was simple for Haru. Sure, the old mistress is harsh and rude, and her mansion is a chore to weed out, but he gets a roof to sleep under, regular meals and a decent allowance. So he keeps wearing a smile and cheery demeanor even though the mistress chews on him daily, because he's one to see silver linings. All things considered, he's lucked out.

One day, though, these ominous-looking flowers started appearing everywhere in the mansion, and when Haru peeked out the walls, he could see the fields outside swarming with them too. As luck would have it, the mistress returned from her vacation on that same day, and she was furious. She screamed at Haru to get rid of them. Not just the ones inside the mansion - she doesn't want to see them when on her way to town, when she looks out the window, or when she takes a walk anywhere. "And don't come back until every single one of those flowers out there is gone!"

Well, he's known better by now than to question her unreasonable demands, Haru sighed inwardly. And hey, on the bright side, that'sa a couple of days, maybe, without the mistress shouting in his ears. It's obvious there's no way he could do this on his own, though. So he packed up some essentials, crafted a makeshift weapon out of his gardening shears for self-protection, and made his way to Kazan. It's a big city, someone there's probably crazy enough to help him weed out a continent.

cdyoung's character: Buront the Knight

A paladinknight from an unknown kingdom called San d'Oria. Who fell out of the sky and through the roof of the Kazan Guild hall one day. He didn't know where he was, or who anyone was when he came too, apparently blaming his predicament on "Filthy Backstabbing Ninjas" which the guild receptionists assumed he meant Rogues. Since his arrival he has kept himself busy by helping the townsfolks with odd jobs, always spouting off about how a true knight always helps people in need, and also several weird terms or saying that surprisingly fit the situation at hand but is generally completely alien in context.

CommissarMega's character: Nila the Mage

Nila Converse is an up-and-coming mage who dreams of fame, fortune, and FIREBALLS. She has been driven to a life of adventure as it provides her with an excuse to blast people nobody would miss at maximum power and rob them into the bargain an opportunity to safely practice her skills, thus avoiding the prospect of a long sentence in a maximum security prison allowing her the prospect of accelerated study at the acclaimed magical university of her choice working as a 'trained consultant' in the private mercanacy company of her choice.

TeeQueue's character: Edward the Healer

Edward had been a part of multiple different guilds before, none of whom made it past their first outing without suffering multiple deaths. As these things always go, the remaining guild members all blamed the healer. Over time this made a once stereotypical warm and friendly healer slowly become jaded and cynical. His teammates overextending themselves or taking crazy risks drives him wild, and in times of extreme duress he frequently starts muttering to himself about how utterly screwed they are.

oB2Ko Mario's character: Dia the Princess

Over a thousand years ago, an evil demon ruled the planet with an iron fist. A Dark One whose name may never be uttered, it unleashed evils so horrific that ancient accounts of its wrath barely scratched the surface of the pure agony and destruction it caused. But, despite how much terror it bestowed into the hearts of all living beings who have come to know it, a clan of warriors stepped forth to challenge the demon and set the world free of its wrath. Against the staggering odds, the clan fought a bloody, merciless battle until, miraculously, it finally prevailed over the demon. In an effort to prevent such evil from escaping into the world again, the clan sealed the demon into the planet's core, never to see the light of day ever again. However, the demon proclaimed it would have the final laugh, as it cursed the remaining clan members with an evil that will haunt them for generations: an eventuality that, one day, the clan will cause the reawakening of the demon once again.

Exactly one thousand years later, about fifteen years from the present day, the last descendant of the clan had been born. A young princess, claiming her royalty thanks to the ancestors who defeated the Dark One, had received the full brunt of the curse. Her parents had witnessed the awakening of the demon once again, through the eyes of the girl that they had carefully raised in peace. But alas, though the demon had awoken as this young girl, its power was still hopelessly sealed away in the core of the planet, never to be wielded by this once all-powerful ruler ever again. Now stuck as a young girl, Dia joins the Hunters in Kazan, hopelessly defeated by the prospect of never regaining her dark glory ever again. But hey, maybe she can eventually find a group strong enough to undo her power's seal, and restore her to her true self? Who knows.

My disdain for you all knows no bounds.
Update 1: The Road Ahead

For some reason, there's no music playing on the tile screen. Anyways, let's get this show on the road.

I'm not sure why, but this game has an 8-bit version of its soundtrack. It's not particularly great, but I'll include a link to those versions of the track anyway.

Seeds sown into a field of stars, left to grow, that they might be harvested.

Call it farming if you like, or gathering, or grazing. Or, call it... a massacre.

This is the way of those known only as the Dragons.

People risking everything for what they believe.

Some fight for ideals, some for honor and wealth, some burn for justice.

They had no idea of what fate had in store for them.

But you needn't fear. It's time to fling open the door to the unknown!

And now we can create a character. First we have to choose their class, which there are 7 of. Oh, and there aren't any unlockable classes. This is all we have to work with here.

And then their portrait, which there are 4 to choose from. The first and second are male, and the third and fourth are female. The exception to this is the Princess class, in which all the portraits are considered female by the game. Yes, this actually matters. The game checks for the party's genders at certain points. If you want to see everything with minimal hassle, just make sure to include both boys and girls in your party.

The first row of portraits is how they look normally, while the second row are their super-deformed looks. Which is what you're gonna be seeing most of the time while you play the game. Anyways, let's talk about these classes' roles.

The Fighter is focused around, well, fighting. Their weapons of choice are swords and axes which-yeah this is what I mean by heavily influenced by Etrian Odyssey. If you played the first two games, they're very similar to Landsknechts.

Durable front-line fighters that are capable of hitting hard and inflicting status effects and debuffs. (Okay that last part wasn't in part of the Landsknecht's skillset.)

They are capable of eating meat.

Rogues are capable of setting up traps and inflicting various status effects. They can fight on the front lines with daggers or from either row with bows.

For those of you that have played EO, they're a combination of the Dark Hunter and the Survivalist.

They can increase the encounter rate and have a chance of finding some money after winning a battle.

Samurai can fight with katanas or barehanded. If they choose to fight with a katana, they must set up a stance first in every battle before they can use their more powerful skills.

They're essentially the equivalent of the Ronin from EO.

They are capable of decreasing the encounter rate.

Knights are a support class, focused around defending the party and reducing the amount of damage they take either by using their shield to protect them, or by provoking enemies into going after them instead.

They're straight up equivalents of the Protector from EO. They even have most of their skills from the first game.

Knights can decrease the amount of damage the party takes from damage tiles.

Mages specialize in dealing elemental damage. They can attack one enemy, or all enemies in battle with Fire, Ice, or Lightning damage. They can even deal non-elemental damage, which ignores any resistances an enemy might have against their attacks. They're probably the most powerful class in the game.

Yeah, they're pretty much Alchemists.

They are capable of teleporting the party out of dungeons, and to the last portal they've used.

Healers are pretty self-explanatory. They can heal the party, dispel any ailments they might get hit with, and revive dead party members. Not only that, they also specialize in poisoning their enemies, which is their main form of offense. While they do wield clubs, they aren't really too good at dealing damage through that method.

They're equivalents of the Medic from EO.

They can prevent surprise attacks, lower the encounter rate, and increase how many times the party can harvest materials from certain places in one day.

Princesses are a unique class. They can sing holy songs to buff the party and increase their capabilities. Or they can sing evil songs to inflict status effects on their enemies. They can also instill fear in their enemies with their whips, and command them to do their bidding.

They're a combination of the Troubadour and the Hexer from Etrian Odyssey.

Princesses are capable of increasing the amount of exp the party gets from battles.

If you're wondering why some of these portraits have pointed ears or fox ears, that's because those people are members of the Rushe race (Localized as Lucier in the 4th game.) The males have pointed ears, while the females have the fox ears. They're seen as something of an inferior race in some places in this setting. Though unlike with portrait genders, the game doesn't care if a given party member is a Rushe or not.

For now, I'll just create my own character and show off this next bit.

It's the first place a new Hunter in Kazan ought to come visit. It's a place for Hunters to meet, to form guilds, and to sign up new members. Do you belong to a guild already? Or are you starting your own? Oh, setting one up? Hmm, I wonder what you want to call it?

So, I'll let you all come up with a guild name and you can throw in votes for the one you like best. You only have 8 characters to work with here.

Though if you can't come up with anything, this is the name I'll be sticking with. Before we get to voting and character creation, I'm gonna cover a bit of the gameplay first.

There's just one name there now, but you can add members at any time. I recommend finding 3 friends before you go!

In 7th Dragon, you can have parties of 4. Let's get some more members in.

The Quest Office is the main place where Hunters can find work. Anyhow, best of luck. I'll be seeing you.

You have to talk to her a few times before you can start putting in more party members.

If you have questions, Menas should be able to answer them.

Registering lets us put in some more party members for our guild. You can only have 16 party members registered at once.

And here's the party I'll be going with.

Party Select is where you go to put your guild members into your party.

And from there you can decide if a party member is in the front row or in the back. Party members in the front row are more likely to be targeted but can deal full damage with physical attacks in this row, while party members in the back take half damage from physical attacks, but have their damage output on physical attacks halved if they're not using a bow.

A more detailed look at our characters.

So these are their status screens. Let's go over their stats.
  • LIFE is their HP. If they run out, they die and can't act in battle.
  • MANA is needed to make use of skills, though not all skills use Mana.
  • ATK is their attack power, which determines how hard characters hit with their physical attacks. It's determined by adding the attack power of the character's weapon and their POW stat together.
  • DEF reduces how much physical and magical damage they take. Characters have an innate defense stat, but they can wear armor to add onto it.
  • POW is simply one part of ATK as explained earlier.
  • INT reduces how much magical damage they take. Mages mainly use this to determine how powerful their spells are.
  • SPD determines the turn order, accuracy, and how often a character can evade attacks.
Skipping ahead a bit more...

Here's the world map. Yes, this game actually has one of those. I don't think many RPGs make use of one nowadays. Anyways, there are quite a few places we can go to right now, but for now let's just take a look around.

As we explore the world map, the map will get filled in with yellow.

And this is what it looks like when we get into a battle.

:siren:Video: Combat:siren:

If you want to see what combat looks like in motion, give this video a watch.

:siren::siren:

This is what I would consider my favorite track in the entire game. Give it a listen!

Battles are done from a first person view, though you do get to see some cute idle animations for your classes in the menu. As for what these options do...

Attack has your character do a normal attack on one enemy. No extra damage modifiers get applied when using this command.

Guard reduces the amount of physical damage the character takes for the turn by 50%.

Skill, lets you use your skills. Though Ellen doesn't know any active skills so she can't make use of it.

Item lets you use your items.

Front/Back swaps the character from the front row to the back row and vice versa.

EX consumes one portion of the character's Exhaust Gauge to give them priority (ensuring that they go first in the current turn) and increases their damage output by 50%. There is one other thing it affects, but that won't be seen for a while. You can only activate EX 3 times per character in one day. To replenish it, you have to rest at an inn.

Escape, let's you escape from battle.

Let's take a look at our enemies.

Rabi
Level: 2
LIFE: 20
ATK: 21
DEF: 5
INT: 5
SPD: 7
Attack Type: Slash
Attributes: Small
Exp: 21
Gold: 2
Item Drops:
-Normal: Rodent Teeth - 40% Drop Rate. 5 needed to unlock the Dagger. (Dagger, +14 ATK, +2 SPD.)
--Teeth of a Rabi.
-Rare: Light Meat - Kill with Slash damage. 5% Drop Rate.
--A small animal's meat. For carnivores. Increases SPD for the day.
Damage Multipliers:
Slash: 100% Blunt: 100% Thrust: 100%
Fire: 100% Ice: 100% Lightning: 100%
Ailment Susceptibility:
Death: 100% Masked Pain: 100% Skill Seal: 100%
Fear: 100% Curse: 100% Bleed: 100%
Poison: 100% Sleep: 100% Confuse: 100%
Paralysis: 100% Blind: 100% Stun: 100%

Skills:

Sand Kick: 30% chance of inflicting Blind on one target. Has a speed modifier of 80%.

For the record, there is absolutely no in game bestiary for any monsters whatsoever. I'm pulling out all this data myself. As for what this all means...

All the stats work the same way for the enemies as they do for us, though enemies don't have a POW stat. Not that they can equip weapons, so whatever. Enemies don't have MANA, so they can cast their skills all they want.

Attack type is the damage type their normal attacks are, which is only important to know if you're going for a specific Samurai build that counters specific types of physical attacks.

Attributes are flags that give the enemies additional properties in battle. There's quite a few an enemy can have, though I'll go over these in a mechanics update.

Damage Multipliers are how much damage enemies take from various damage types. The higher the number, the better.

Ailment Susceptibility is the likely hood of an enemy getting hit with certain ailments your party has access to. Again, the higher the number, the better. Also, every single random encounter in the game has 100% susceptibility to every single ailment, so I'm only gonna list those out for the bigger enemies (such as bosses) from now on.

Anyways, Rabi are one of the weakest enemies in the game. They don't really do much aside from trying to blind you when they're not at full health.

By the way, you can't make use of certain skills if you don't have the right weapon type. Andy doesn't have a bow, so he can't use Seeker, even though using it now would be completely pointless.

Okay, let's get this started.

Despite the fact that the battles are in first person, you do get to see your characters taking action, which adds quite a bit of charm and personality to the game in my opinion. Also it helps that the animations are really brisk and don't last for a whole minute. (Looking at you, 7th Dragon III Code: VFD.)

And down go the rabbits.

And after the battle is over, EXP and Gold are given out, but enemies don't drop gold unless you have a Rogue with the Rogue's Eye passive in your team. Now EXP gain actually scales depending on how high your party members' levels are, which is where the enemy's level stat comes in. If your party members are under the enemy's level, you'll get more EXP so you can catch up where the devs want you to be. If you're way over the enemy's level, you'll get far less EXP from them. The total EXP gained is divided among the remaining party members. The less party members alive or aren't petrified, the more EXP the survivors gain.

You can only get one item drop from an enemy at a time, with the game checking for the rare drop first before it checks to see if you get the common drop. Though with some enemies, there is a specific way you have to kill them in order to get their rare drop.

With all that out of the way, let's get onto character creation. Come up with a name, though you only have 6 characters to work with there, and choose their class and appearance, and a little bio for them. Don't forget to come up with a guild name (maximum of 8 characters.) I'll pick and choose the ones I like best. Though I'll be taking some contributions from another site as well, so if you're wondering where the submissions and votes I accepted came from, there's your answer.

And vote for 3 classes you would like to see in the party.

Interested to see where this goes! How long is the game (ie how big an undertaking are you getting into here)?

Name: Gourd
Class: Knight
Portrait: First from the left (blondie boy)

Bio: Gourd comes from a Knightly Chapter which bases rank solely on the size of one's shield. He joins the party in hopes of finding bigger shields to improve his status.

Guild Name: Catonine

I'd like to see a Princess, Knight (durr) and Mage, with the Princess as the "leader" (if there's such a thing).

Oh, didn't expect this. Same game you were teasing in the EO3 thread?

Name: Marie
Class: Knight
Portrait: 4th, the pigtailed one
Bio: Little Miss Marie was always a bit different from most people in the world. She didn't enjoy playing dress-up or have tea parties or play with her dollies. She didn't fit in with the girls. She didn't like to play ball or run around either. She didn't fit in with the boys. She was just always a bit off, from everyone else, and didn't have many friends. Most of Marie's time was spent staring at random odds and ends she'd find. It started with little bug shells and dead flies, but it didn't stop there. In her adolescent years people could find her poking the carcass of a monster outside of town, or gathering a pile of rotting meat in her backyard and stabbing the maggots. Even later in her life she was attending funerals for people she didn't even know, and that was when the town finally decided to do the sensible thing and kick her out. Undaunted, Marie decided to chase after her passions, and eventually figured out the best place to have her indulge in her personal interest was up close and personal - where all the slaughter and mess happened, of course! So little Miss Marie went and got herself a set of armor and a biiiiiig shield, and went off her merry way.

For a guild name, let's go off the top of my head and be thematically appropriate with the Dragoons, and have a starting party of Princess, Healer, and Mage.

Arcade Rabbit
Nov 11, 2013

Name: Andy
Class: Rogue
Portrait: 1st
Bio: Andy tries very, very hard to come across as a cool and composed anime ninja. So hard in fact, that his efforts are incredibly obvious. His true personality is much more mild-mannered and friendly, he just really, really wants to be the badass stoic he's heard about in all of those stories. While his personal efforts often end up having the opposite effect, he is a genuinely skilled combatant and he knows his way around the battlefield. His good nature always shines through, and he just doesn't have it in him to ignore someone in need or truly mean any of the "aloof loner" lines he says.

Bio: Tammy is the 6th Child, 3rd Girl from a the royal family from the smallest kingdom in the land. She doesn't stand to inherit much, if anything, and is looked down upon by all her siblings. Rather than hang around to be the whipping girl to her elder siblings, she's decided to go out and adventure in the hopes of turning the frown upside down.

It's pretty noticeable on how different this game is compared to its sequels.

Name: Zanki
Class:: Samurai
Portrait:: 1
Bio: Zanki hails from an unknown country and travels to Kazan to perfect his skills as a Samurai. Bizarrely enough, he doesn't have any quirks, habits or an odd reason for joining up a guild. He's just a regular Samurai looking for improvement, this means that he probably has alot of common sense. Of course, this also means he's not used to such odd people and tends to get confused and weirded out by their behaviour. Unfortunately for him, the guild he'll try to join up will definitely have such people. Pity him.

I honestly don't mind Slayer.

Bio: The third son of a wealthy but not noble family, Leo was passed over for his two elder brothers to inherit the family name. You couldn't even beat Assassincopter!!!

Bio: Tinker, tailor, soldier, spy. Ian has dabbled in a bit of everything, but like a true dilettante never actually settled on what he wanted to do. Exasperated, his father (a minor noble) threw him out and told him to come back only when he'd actually decided what he was going to be. Ian wandered for a little while, doing odd jobs and picking up bits and pieces of interest over time. Right now, he's wandered over to Kazan, and apparently a new guild is looking for recruits? It'll be a nice diversion.

Name: Clara
Class: Healer
Portrait: Third from the left

Clara spent most of her childhood cooped up indoors due to an illness. Once she was old enough and well enough to travel, she left the small town in which she was raised to learn about the world and see all the things she was only able to read about before, while helping people in whatever ways she could. She's book-smart (if a little naive), deeply curious, relaxed and optimistic, sometimes to the point of lacking basic self-preservation instincts.

Festival with your real* little sister!
Name: Ark
Class: Rogue
Portrait: 4
Guild Name: Supanova
Party: Rogue, Mage, Knight

Ark is an exile from her home village with an urge to take anything that isn't tied down to the ground. Her goals in life are simple; to get rich, make friends and to eat sweets, and she'll do whatever it takes to achieve those goals. She's cunning, but is about as emotionally sensitive as a rock and doesn't really get social etiquette, which often finds herself with far more enemies than friends, despite her best intentions. She took to adventuring because it was the fastest way to achieve her dream (and maybe come back to her home village when she's rich and famous).

Interested to see where this goes! How long is the game (ie how big an undertaking are you getting into here)?

It's actually a very big game, with a ton of optional content. Definitely a lot longer than 7th Dragon III: Code VFD, if you've played that. Took me around like 50 to 60 hours to 100% it. I'll be looking to show off most of it. I can handle it though, I've LPed bigger games before. (Probably gonna turn on a few cheat codes to accelerate the process, because this game makes a few questionable design decisions at certain points.)

Oh, didn't expect this. Same game you were teasing in the EO3 thread?

Yep. I decided to do this game after all.

I should note that we're only in the prologue right now, and it's gonna take a while for the game to actually get started. Right now it's basically trying to ease in the player.

He soon left his guild after one night, he heard about about Kazan and and many hunters who were gathering there. Determined to prove to the world just how great a leader he could be, he made his way to Kazan to form a guild. While confident in battle, he underestimates the qualities a leader needs outside of battle and often tries to delegate that work to others, describing it as "admin work". I've been sitting here for 5 mins trying to think of a joke to make but I just realised the animators of Mass Effect already did it for me

Name: Glyph
Class: Fighter
Portrait: Number 1, with the axe

Bio: It's obvious from his name, isn't it? Glyph was meant to be a mage. Father had done well with magic in school, but always knew he hadn't really reached his full potential. Mother had always admired the magical arts, though she had no faculty for it herself. Both had close friends who had made their careers in the field of magical sciences. His parents put their hearts and souls (and money) into his tutoring. They made sure he was accepted to the best academy. They even had an appointment with the First Magicians Brigade lined up for him as soon as he graduated.

No. Not for Glyph. All the tutoring and the coddling and the preening just drove him up a wall. He felt suffocated. As soon as he was out of his parents' grip and on academy grounds, he started planning his escape. Thanks to a towel, a banana, and a bottle of olive oil, he was able to slip out of from under the watchful eyes of the Rector and into the wild free world. Immediately, he sought out the baddest, nastiest gang of mercenaries he could find. He marched up to their commander without a second thought and demanded to join. The hardened fighting man looked at his compatriots gathered around him and then back at this soft, untested child, and immediately punched him in the teeth.

It was the first time Glyph had ever been hurt! His parents had never so much as spanked him. It took him completely by surprise. As his vision cleared, he couldn't help but smile, blood seeping between his teeth. He laughed with uneven giddiness and asked for another. After an uncomfortable, bemused pause, his laughter was met in kind by the other members of the mercenary band, and the commander put a welcoming arm around his shoulder and bought him his first drink.

Those men ushered Glyph into adulthood. They never coddled him, but they were never cruel, either. They pushed him to fight, to trust his gut and put steel in his nerves stronger than the steel in his hands! He never questions if he made the right choice. Sure, he probably could have been a great mage. He still remembers lots of the theory and rudiments of the arts. But he can't bring himself to care. Solving your problems with magic isn't really living. He doesn't even recognize himself in the missing person flyers his parents still put up to this day. This is what he was meant to be.

She is haughty and cold, as well as greedy to a fault, but she does indeed care for those under her rule, and will do anything to try and help her people as needed. After all, people leaving her kingdom would mean less money and less money means a monarchy falls apart without fail!

Grew up on the streets, with no family to speak of, Nyroc has seen the worst people have to offer. Typical thug, loner, a bit aloof about his skill, he was just a petty theif, until a kind woman he had pickpocketed took pity on what she saw as a lonely, dirty kid. That was the day Nyroc gained his first real friend: the woman did everything she could to set him straight. He even started attending school! Until one day, all that returned home was her favorite yellow scarf. She had been out gathering flowers to sell, but never returned. Nyroc was heartbroken. As a defence, the street thug that her had been made a return, but with a new goal: revenge. The kind boy that the woman had raised is still in there, but for now other things are on Nyroc's mind.

Actually, it's not that bad.
At the beginning it is the strongest build for Samurai as their weapons are kind of hard to come by. They can equip normal swords but their overhead or drawing skills all need a katana.
So punching is actually stronger in the early game since Unarmed Switch boosts the ATK you get from POW significantly (but not your DEF). Starting mid-game new blades come around more often and that's also the time when the inate bonus of punching starts to fall off a bit. Also at this point you will probably run out of things to really put skill points into as the counter skills are very situational.

A Samurai that goes around punching stuff for a living is not really bad but a Samurai that starts out punching stuff and picks up a katana eventually will usually outshine them.

For the record, Samurai can't get Katanas until after the prologue. And even then, you need to get through 1 dungeon before you can find your first one.

It's not all bad, because fists gain a huge attack boost once you put in 1 point in Unarmed Arts (Attack becomes equal to double your POW. Also, regular attacks gain a small chance to instantly kill their target.) They aren't as good as a Katana build, because those scale far better than fists.

Which means until that point you can use exactly Nuki-Kake if you don't want to go about punching things as it is the only skill that works with swords.
Though I guess you might do that even if you had a katana since before that point fights are rarely long enough to make stances useful. Stance skills are barely stronger than Nuki-Kake at low levels (in fact at level 1 the two main stance skills and Nuki-Kake all have a 130% multiplier) and low level stances are not worth the turn it takes to set them up if the fights run short.
Mana cost of stance skills is one point lower though which is nice for the Samurai's pitiful mana pool.

Biography: Sanki was once known for being a fairly decent explorer in the area, especially with a katana, but then one incident led to another and now he is left katanaless. Since the nearest town he just decided to stay in didn't happen to stock any katanas, he's just kind of sitting about and waiting for someone to come along so he can actually have some sort of defense around the extremely threatening and murderous* Rabi that sit just outside the town. Even without a blade, he's quite hotheaded and will probably cause some sort of trouble, but hey, at least this causes some of the nearby monsters to not approach him if he ever takes five or so steps out of town! Especially helpful, since he... isn't actually a fan of actual combat. He's like that guy who taunts you forever but if he needs to act on it he's all "Hey, I didn't actually mean that! Leave me alone!" or somesuch.

*He does not actually think this. He's just using it as an excuse for not leaving, which doesn't really help his cowardliness.
