HOSTILE ALIENS HAVE OVERRUN THE TALOS I SPACE STATION AND YOU MUST USE MIND-BENDING POWERS AND UNIQUE WEAPONS TO DECIDE THE FATE OF HUMANITY.

Wikipedia posted:

Prey takes place in an alternate timeline where United States President John F. Kennedy survives the assassination attempt in 1963. As President, Kennedy directs more funding into the space program, allowing it to flourish. Drawn by humans' activity in space, an alien force made up of many different species, collectively called the Typhon, attacks Earth.

Wikipedia posted:

Arkane's Prey is a re-imagining of the original 2006 Prey developed by Human Head Studios. While Prey 2, a sequel to the 2006 game, had been planned, it fell into development hell following transfer of the intellectual property from 3D Realms to Bethesda Softworks, and eventually canceled in 2014. Arkane's version does not use any of the planned sequels assets, and only incorporates the name and the broad theme of the protagonist being hunted by aliens of the previous games. Arkane built Prey as a spiritual sequel to System Shock, providing the player with several potential means of progressing within the game.

It wouldn't be a recent Arkane game without some interesting character abilities, such as the ability to mimic and control ..

Abilities are gained and upgraded by using Neuromods - which plunge needles into your brain via the eyeball. Nice.
New alien abilities are learned and become available by researching aliens using the Psychoscope.

Using too many alien abilities will summon a Nightmare, and previously friendly turrets will identify you as a thread.

Known alien abilities:
Mimic Matter
Kinetic Blast
Mindjack
Remote Manipulation
Psychoshock
Superthermal
Leverage
Phantom Shift

Known human abilities:
Combat Focus
Repair

Turrets
Turrets are found throughout the station, either functional or broken. They can be picked up and redeployed, as well as crafted and are useful for providing backup.

“The Nightmare was specifically created to kill you, because the Typhons recognize you as some kind of anomaly that’s resisting them and threatening their system,” Bare says. “The more alien powers you install, the more it becomes aware of you and can track you down. That’s a dynamic system. So I can be in the cafeteria somewhere and jam 15 Neuromods into my eye, and all of a sudden hear this huge roar, and the Nightmare is in the level. He’s in the world, hunting you, but he doesn’t know where you are unless you stumble into him or do things like install a bunch of neuromods.”

Will it include Chaos - type gameplay changes, a la Dishonored / 2?
Not as in Dishonored.

While Bare said there won’t be anything quite as overt as Dishonored’s “Chaos” system, which measures how players’ choices directly make Dishonored’s world worse, your relationships with the people you run across as you explore Talos 1 will have an impact on the game.
“Later in the game you’ll actually find survivors. Most of the people are dead — the aliens have just broken out and they’re just overrunning the station,” Bare said. “So you’re in the middle of a disaster, but occasionally you’ll run into pockets of survivors, like some security guards who have barricaded themselves in, or somebody who’s hiding in the kitchen in the crew facilities. And how you interact with those people, how you treat them has significant consequences for the endgames.”

Me too, I keep meaning to give System Shock 2 another go. It made me happy that Arkane referenced that as an inspiration.

Yep, Chris Avellone and Ricardo Bare - I had no idea about that until writing the op just now.

Me too. I don't think it's much related to the original Prey game, so no space vagina doors (so bizarre).

E - from the Wiki:

quote:

Bethesda's vice president of marketing Pete Hines explained that the new game has no elements from the cancelled Prey 2 outside of the player facing against aliens. Hines explained that Arkane evaluated the Prey property to its core and built up a new game around it, calling it more a psychological game rather than a horror one.

What stokes me about it the most is how Arkane did such a good job of adding replayability to Dishonored 1 / 2, and a unique aesthetic, that in a 1960's inspired space station could be a trip.

Dishonored 1 suffered from feeling too much like too many different source materials: there was a little it of Half Life 2, but not enough; there was a goodly amount of Thief, but the game didn't really ever feel like it justified Corvo robbing every house he's infiltrating blind; the implicit challenge of non-fatal runs also cuts you off from a majority of your abilities and weapons, which sort of makes it feel like you have to make a moral choice to play the game the "fun" way.

Prey looks like it's much more its own beast, and I think that unrestrained from previous models, this game will really showcase the developers' talents and present some true new ideas.

I totally agree ^^

I was wondering about the Chaos system from DH, and found this from an Interview with Bare:

I wish I had more accurate info then this, but I can't find anyone talking about how it runs yet.

Prey (2017) recommended PC requirements:
Intel CPU: Core i7-3770 4-Core 3.4GHz.

Direct X: DX 11.
HDD Space: 55 GB.

That's lower then the recommended DH2 requirements, but it doesn't mean a whole lot at all.

I was kinda disappointed with Dishonored 2, so I think I'll give it a little while to see where the dust settles before buying.

And while part of me is still sad I won't get my Space Bounty Hunter on in Prey 2, some of the names like Avellone and Gordon are enough to have me curious about it.

I did this and could have stopped it, but nothing in nature ever follows a gaussian curve. Sure, they'll tell you that it does. They say that every five minutes someone dies in a car accident, but how often are there seven hundred and sixty one armless and legless corpses in one hangar?

I have only very vague recollections of the original Prey, but I do remember being astounded by it, particularly all the warped space and gravity tricks that were novel. It's a little strange that it's a totally new setting, but they did the same thing with Quake 1/2 and both were perfectly good games. Plus, the strength of the Prey name alone and association with DH2 will pull me in.

Mimic and Phantom shift look cool as. They seem like a solid set to me, shame there isn't a DH2 style domino.

Powers can interact with each other, like mimicking something, and using blast to fire yourself upwards for greater mobility. That's kind of neat.

Haven't seen any mention of passive buffs, like DH bonecharms. E- suit upgrades provide buffs

They're using the Crytek engine which has been around forever, and not the weird hybrid of IDTECH5/6 that they used for DH2 so hopefully that means it'll launch pretty smoothly.
