Finally caught up, good grief, what a read, what a ride!

You folks are scary dedicated to this LP, and with good reason; the quality and effort shown in production, from all sides, is astounding.

@Yooper: Please sign me up for a pilot spot, callsign ‘LoSA’. Would prefer to be ‘ground-attack’, and if we were ever to get bombers, I want a go! (yeah, I know the bomber wait list is at least a few deep).

By the way, bit of a surprise when I read that post on ‘why you’re doing this LP’; glad you’re healthy and in the clear (or so it would seem, with vacations and work trips back on the schedule).

For the Goons:

So, any advice on how to put mission plans together? I’d like to give it a shot, except they’re rather intimidating to even wrap your head around? Suggestions on how to make it more ‘doable’ for a neophyte?

That mission payout and expenditures is unbelievable, how is this even possible?

Is the price difference between the cutting edge and our inventory really that great? I suppose so.

Between the net profit this mission and the nuke 'ransom', HG really can upgrade to the next evolution.

All we have to do is complete phase 3.

I don't think A is going to be a problem; nukes don't just accidentally 'go off'; the bigger issue is the current radioactivity. Functioning nukes don't emit harmful radiation, to the point where people can get sick from being in its proximity.

The fact those Hippies have radiation poisoning means a) Cobbie and crew need protective suits (or a lead-lined crate for the thing) and b) the device's 'casing' is cracked, meaning the nuke won't 'detonate' properly.

I like it, classic 'shape the battlefield' engagement; this fight is won before we ever take to the field.

Objective: Mission Kill the IL-38N May.

Complexity: Its too well protected by both sea and air assets, and we won't win a head-to-head fight.

Possible Solutions (or realistically, all of 'The Solutions):

a) Disable the Air Assets before they take to the skies and or before we engage them traditionally.

b) Disable the Sea Assets before they reach the AOO and or before we engage them traditionally.

c) Disable the IL-38N May before they reach the AOO and or before we engage them traditionally.

d) Have the USN engage the fleet to reduce Russian Fleet effectiveness and or as a distraction before we engage them traditionally.

@Yooper for Jack and Zack

1) Where (approximately) is the 'line of departure' for Halsey's Fleet?

2) Do we have contacts for the serviceman at the Russian Air Bases? Someone we can persuade to 'accidentally' leave the weapon safety pins in, or under-fuel the planes, unplug a connector on the avionic suites, that sort of thing?

3) Sea Fleet sabotage options already covered by Dr. Snark

4) Can we evacuate everyone by boat, and make picking up Cobbie the last stop? If so, can we start packing and loading now?

5) Would the Russians 'retreat' once we down the IL-38N May, or is it a fighting retreat regardless?

So, would it be possible to coordinate the attack with the USN subs? Overall thoughts are to slam a wall of torpedoes at the Russian Fleet, and while they're maneuvering out of the way, slam a wall of missiles at the IL-38N May.

So, let's not even plan on damaging the rest of the OPFOR beyond downing the IL-38N May.

The Russians will turn away if even the 'potential' downside outweighs the benefits, that being a red-neck filled rock in the Bering Sea.

Yooper posted:

13/4, the device is going by Air.

Alright, frame is slowing coming into focus.

1) Cobbie, ground assault team, and nuke, are leaving by air. We'll have to fly in the C-130s for exfil, and establish control of the airfield.

2) Our REMF's should evacuate immediately (what are the options in terms of airlift and or sealift?), they prep the planes for flight, then they're out; there will be no RTB for our air assets this mission. You run dry, that's it, you run for Canada.

3) General plan is to draw the IL-38N May away from the Russian boats, and the Russian planes. Maybe coordinating the attack with the USN subs may help? Doesn't sound like we can shenanigan the OPFOR's air assets, so, ideas for splitting up their air wing, without actually engaging in a fight?

4) Jack and Zack: Get off your asses and find us some back channel options, I need angles on something, anything. While I can't find an actual cost number associated with fielding a Kirov, estimates put it at around $1.5 Billion USD (give or take a couple hundred million); I don't think it matters how many of these Battlecruisers the Russians may have, you don't just write off a billion dollar asset as an 'acceptable loss'.

Unless by development cycle you meant one design iteration? Possible, the thing was in R&D for over 15 years; only Lockheed would have those cost break-downs, and, I don't think the Program was quite set-up like that.
