 What is Discord? Discord is an all-in-one voice and text chat for gamers that's free, secure, and works on both your desktop and phone. Discord is always completely free to use with no gotchas. This means you can make as many servers as you want with no slot limitations. The big question that has been asked by many is: if Discord Servers are free, how are the developers going to make money? Discord Developers have said time and time again that "In the future there will be optional cosmetics like themes, sticker packs and sound packs available for purchase. We'll never charge for Discord's core functionality". SA Discord is an unaffiliated Something Awful home away from home. It was created in October 28, 2015, and since then more than 2300 goons have registered and joined in the fun. Our idea was to provide goons with a place where they could gather with all goons and be goony in-game in real-time. About 95% of the population is SA goons. The reminder are friends, other guest developers we have invited from different multiple games (like Bercilak from Sandbox Interactive makers of Albion Online, a very bad game; and Supreem, the lead developer of the Pre-Alpha game, Shards Online). Everyone is welcome, goon or not. We have tons of text channels and voice channels. Our voice channels are open for everyone to come play or hangout, meaning that you can invite your non-SA friends to hang out with you and play. To become a Button Pusher (a Moderator), simply host an active OP in SA and whisper any of the admins. If you want your OP to have a #channel for text and voice, we can make that happen as well.  IF YOU WANT CHANNELS ADDED FOR YOUR GAME, LET A MODERATOR KNOW. WE WILL BE HAPPY TO DO IT FOR YOU AND EXPLAIN HOW TO MODERATE IT  If you're interested in becoming a server moderator let us know. If you are running a guild in a game and need server admin to manage your channels and members, post in #bitch-whine-requests or direct message an admin on Discord. We're over a year old and we still haven't had to kick or ban anyone, Goon or non-Goon. Most of the server's text channels are reserved for use by and only visible to authenticated SA Goons. This is why GoonAuth for Discord was principally built. In the server's early days we talked with Discord Developers about their plans to expand Discord communities out. We discussed how we wished Discord had the ability to "nest" folders, like Mumble and Teamspeak. Fortunately for us, the Discord devs are pretty engaged with the community: for example, when we brought up our dismay that Discord didn't support nested channels right off the bat, Discord Developer @Stanislav, Lead Product Manager, showed us a sneak peek of a new feature they've been polishing up in order to implement that concept:  Discord has a great feedback community. We thought it would be cool to offer the SA community a directory of all of our fellow Goon-owned Discord servers. Our hope was to make it easier for other goons and friends to find other SA servers painlessly join any of them. This is how http://discordgoons.com was born:  There are currently 58 Goon-run Discord Servers enrolled in DiscordGoons.com and counting!  As an added bonus, filtering by server name or description has been added to the site to help deal with the ever-increasing number of GDN affiliates! How do I add my server to DiscordGoons.com? You need to add the Goon Discord Network Bot (GDNBot) to your Discord Server to enroll in the directory. GDNBot is a central point of management for all enrolled servers, and offers servers the ability to automate authentication and privilege elevation via GoonAuth for Discord. NOTE: The bot only keeps track of A) how many people have registered in your server, B) the name of your discord, and C) when the server was created. These are used to help sort servers by player count, server name and server age on the website. To add your server to DiscordGoons.com simply follow these 2 steps: 1. Click this link and add the bot to your server: https://discordapp.com/oauth2/authorize?&client_id=171456770240282624&scope=bot&permissions=268438528  2. In your Discord Server, go to Server Settings > Roles and drag the GDN role to above whatever Goon role you have created.  At this point any one who has a forum account in Something Awful will be able to run the !authme command and authenticate. FROM HERE AND ON ALL BOT COMMANDS MUST BE TYPED FROM WITHIN A SERVER CHANNEL UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED! How does GoonAuth for Discord works? To authenticate yourself on a Discord Server that is part of the http://discordgoons.com directory, the server owner needs to enable the !authme command. (This is how we separate pubbie servers from Goon Servers) 1. Authenticate yourself to GDN by typing: !authme SA USERNAME HERE Example:

FAQ Where is the auth system? It's done, check the top of this post. How do I invite people to the server? Click the auth-room, then the box with an arrow to the right of the name, which will generate an invite link good for 24 hours. Then have them authed. If they don't have an SA account, talk to an admin/moderator. What is the difference between voice and text channels? Text channels are basically the same as IRC channels on the server with similar functions, and the voice channels are the channels where you speak to other people, and can be joined independently of each other. I'm not broadcasting any audio! I have enforced Push to Talk on the server at the moment. You have to set a PTT key in order to broadcast. YOU MUST RUN DISCORD AS ADMIN TO GET PTT TO WORK WHEN YOU HAVE A GAME WINDOW OPEN I want a channel added, what do? Direct message any admin/moderator on the server, and one will be set up for you. We don't have the same channel setup systems as Mumble yet because the functionality isn't there yet. How do I navigate the server? Double clicking a channel allows you to join it. The people icon on top is your private message section where you can manage convos. Double click any username on the right hand side to message them. If you have more than one Discord community, they will be listed on the left hand sidebar. I think you could add or change X to make the server better. Good, tell someone and pitch in. This is very much an alpha build of alpha software so improvements are going to be constant. A good channel for this is #bitch-whine-requests. I want to help run the server! Message an admin. I'm tired of getting notifications for so many channels! Since there's a buttload of channels, and you probably don't care about half of them, you can mute all message notifications from a specific channel. Go to the channel, and at the top, click the little bell. Now you won't keep getting pinged about anime catgirls unless you want to. If you ever get the desire to rice your Discord session there is a plugin for that. https://betterdiscord.net/home/ just install that and start modifying the CSS. It'll allow you to remove some the jank in the user interface. Gif of a simple CSS modification to autohide the channel tab and expand it when hovered over. This stuff can be done on the fly without reloading the client. Which isn't particular difficult via ctrl+r anyway.  You can get Plugins like irc tab autocomplete for names and local renaming of other users. The options are limited right now since most people don't know this can be done.
