A lot of your party was just going to do exactly the same thing for most combat rounds in the game: swing or shoot (usually just one time) at the enemy, with a pretty high chance to miss. This is especially true in the early game, where your casters have very limited memorization. By BG2, RTWP was pretty clearly holding crpgs back.
