My general impressions: It is much more dark and horrifying than the original series, more along the lines of Fire Walk With Me and other Lynch bizarre nightmare-scapes. But it does have some bits of bizarre humor which are wonderful. And it still does the same thing as the original series where you get some hilarious and funny moments that are immediately followed by something horrifying, or horrifying moments that are immediately followed but something funny, light-hearted, or endearing so that you are constantly thrown off-guard.

Also the dedications in the credits to people who aren't around to be part of it. <sniffle>

I love the original series and I love this new season so far, but I totally get this. I think this new series is really for big Lynch fans. I know people who loved the original series hated Fire Walk With Me because it was so much more dark and terrifying than the series. One of the friends I watched with tonight commented that this felt a lot more like a horror series than the original, and I think that's pretty accurate. It's very very Lynch weird, and that's not everyone's thing. And I'm not trying to say "you just don't get it" or anything dismissive like that. It's absolutely not to everyone's tastes, but I think it's targeted at a portion of Twin Peaks fans who really get into the weird and incomprehensible stuff.

i'm probably grasping at straws here but the sex worker who Dougie is with is named Jade and the ring is a jade ring. One apparently stops you from being possessed and the other stops your head from being blown off. Probably just a coincidence

Totally in so far. I'm so glad we get eighteen episodes of this.

I am going to take a guess here and say aliens are behind everything which was slowly revealed over the original two seasons? My question is have I ruined the first two seasons now I have watched this?

I am also not sure if I have the time to commit to the first two seasons is there a good analysis video I can watch if this is the case?

I'd dispute that, the second bit. This new series seems pretty straight forward in how it's characters act, it's just the premise that's completely out there. But I don't think it's that out-there that it's inscrutable. Yes the places beyond time and space inhabited by unimaginable beings are a bit crazy, but that's the nature of the beast. Some of the scenes are slow and stilted but there's always a reason for the awkwardness, be it social inadequacy or just because it's a world of hosed up hitmen. The only thing that's been weird for the sake of it is the Michael Cera bit and maybe that was shoved in there for that reason, as a bit of contrast and self-parody. I didn't much like the other murder plot at first watch but on second it's really great. It's taking the reality of stuff that went on in the original series and putting it into a modern drama setting. There's nothing in the show that's weird for the sake of it, it's just a show about intelligent beings from another incomprehensible world interacting with our own and the consequences of that on people.

I think you can quite easily sum up the plot so far in less than a paragraph and have it make total sense, even if it's dealing with bizarre elements. Going into episode five I know who the characters are, what their motives are and what could possibly happen. It's The Idiot versus Iago in a battle to exist, or maybe reunite into a whole again, with a backdrop of the rest of the world trying to deal with their responsibility to that outrageous situation.

That's why I think him emerging first with a hooker and then going into a casino is great. Two places where nobody really care what you act like as long as you're spending money. Even his wife has a motive of being overjoyed that the money he's got can get them out of some situation. It reminds me a lot of the meta commentary in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas about how you can get away with anything in places like that as long as you're playing the game.

My favourite (Wally is a close second obv) has to be the intro of Evil Coop, with that loving amazing music and classic Lynch night driving shot. After 20 minutes of mildly unfamiliar oddities this is the moment where my favourite filmmaker came back in force.

Least favourite is probably in ep 3 - the hosed-up woman and son we see in the house across from Dougie and Jade's sex den. Just felt too disconnected from anything and more like Lynch just dipped into his early 00s website stuff for a second.

Its mostly 1st person from a girl who suffered a stroke explaining how it changed her brain and perception of the world. Its produced by lynch and his influence can definitely be seen in places as she describes the weird dream she lives in.
