My comment as soon as the drums started playing was "Cool, looks like they got Rammstein back for the soundtrack." Guess I was wrong about that... (I know Rammstein wasn't in the original soundtrack, I was thinking about Lost Highway.)
Speaking of things being carried over from other Lynch shows, am I crazy or was the nightmare demon lady from Mulholland Drive also in the start of episode 2?

Or are those different characters? They just looked really similar to me. I was thinking "Wow, does all Lynch's stuff actually exist in the same universe or something?" when I saw that.

My general impressions: It is much more dark and horrifying than the original series, more along the lines of Fire Walk With Me and other Lynch bizarre nightmare-scapes. But it does have some bits of bizarre humor which are wonderful. And it still does the same thing as the original series where you get some hilarious and funny moments that are immediately followed by something horrifying, or horrifying moments that are immediately followed but something funny, light-hearted, or endearing so that you are constantly thrown off-guard.

Also the dedications in the credits to people who aren't around to be part of it. <sniffle>

Dougie was "manufactured" by Doppelganger Coop so that instead of Good Coop leaving the Lodge and Doppelganger Coop (Bob) returning to the Lodge, Good Coop would switch places with Dougie and Doppelganger Coop would remain at large, so that's where he is now. He's basically stuck in limbo, AKA Dougie's body/life, and he has no idea what the gently caress's going on or how to do anything.

I love the original series and I love this new season so far, but I totally get this. I think this new series is really for big Lynch fans. I know people who loved the original series hated Fire Walk With Me because it was so much more dark and terrifying than the series. One of the friends I watched with tonight commented that this felt a lot more like a horror series than the original, and I think that's pretty accurate. It's very very Lynch weird, and that's not everyone's thing. And I'm not trying to say "you just don't get it" or anything dismissive like that. It's absolutely not to everyone's tastes, but I think it's targeted at a portion of Twin Peaks fans who really get into the weird and incomprehensible stuff.
There's none of the cheesy music (no jazz/rock guitar playing in every single scene), but a lot of the camp of the original series is still here in this new season (albeit in different ways). It's definitely more like FWWM and his other movies than the original series, though, so I can totally understand why people who only watched the original series would be turned off by these episodes so far.

Plus I think this is gonna be the only week like this where some people have seen more than what aired on TV. They're not dropping episodes 5 and 6 next week or anything. On Showtime Anytime it specifically says that new episodes are coming June 4th.

How do you figure? I just rewatched the entire series and FWWM week before last and the first 4 episodes felt way closer in tone to FWWM to me (no constant music, way more surreal horror stuff, fewer goofy subplots, etc.)

The original series and FWWM are pretty different tonally and this felt way more like the latter.

Well I don't think anyone's saying it has nothing to do with the original series because it obviously still has a lot of its same characters/mythology, just that the original series had way more Frost influence and network interference that stopped it from being entirely from Lynch's twisted mind and this has way less of that and feels like Lynch was given free rein to do whatever the hell he wants and it's glorious (if you're into that sort of thing).

Twin Peaks is absolutely not one of those shows where you can just jump into season 3 and hope to have any idea of what's going on. Hell, even people who have seen the entire original series, Fire Walk With Me and The Missing Pieces (basically everything you can see) have barely any idea what's going on.

I added a note to the OP saying as much. Don't watch this unless you're a big Twin Peaks fan who's already immersed in the mythology of the series. I get that that can be a big ask for some people, but if it's too much to ask of you then this series probably isn't for you anyway.

I'd dispute that, the second bit. This new series seems pretty straight forward in how it's characters act, it's just the premise that's completely out there. But I don't think it's that out-there that it's inscrutable. Yes the places beyond time and space inhabited by unimaginable beings are a bit crazy, but that's the nature of the beast. Some of the scenes are slow and stilted but there's always a reason for the awkwardness, be it social inadequacy or just because it's a world of hosed up hitmen. The only thing that's been weird for the sake of it is the Michael Cera bit and maybe that was shoved in there for that reason, as a bit of contrast and self-parody. I didn't much like the other murder plot at first watch but on second it's really great. It's taking the reality of stuff that went on in the original series and putting it into a modern drama setting. There's nothing in the show that's weird for the sake of it, it's just a show about intelligent beings from another incomprehensible world interacting with our own and the consequences of that on people.

I think you can quite easily sum up the plot so far in less than a paragraph and have it make total sense, even if it's dealing with bizarre elements. Going into episode five I know who the characters are, what their motives are and what could possibly happen. It's The Idiot versus Iago in a battle to exist, or maybe reunite into a whole again, with a backdrop of the rest of the world trying to deal with their responsibility to that outrageous situation.
I mean you could give somebody a quick plot synopsis and have it make a little sense, but people who have not seen the totality of the series will absolutely not understand a lot of the ways the show works. It's hard to convey that to someone in text. You have to have seen enough of it for yourself to draw real conclusions from it.

Also, an unrelated technical question: I was trying to make GIFs of the show using the GIF making app I've been using for a while (Gooncam GIF Maker), but when I select an area to make a GIF of, the area that records is not the same area I selected. I'm wondering if that's because I'm running a 4K monitor now and the higher resolution is causing this weirdness. Is there a GIF making app for PC that you guys know of that works well even in higher resolutions? I tried one called Giffing Tool and that gave me the same issue (different recording area than the one I selected).

Yeah i get you. I guess I think that if people are willing to accept that some bits are crazy supernatural weird rear end poo poo then everything else around it falls into place really well.

That's why I think him emerging first with a hooker and then going into a casino is great. Two places where nobody really care what you act like as long as you're spending money. Even his wife has a motive of being overjoyed that the money he's got can get them out of some situation. It reminds me a lot of the meta commentary in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas about how you can get away with anything in places like that as long as you're playing the game.
I like how neither the hooker nor the casino people thought him acting out of the ordinary was anything super abnormal, the hooker just thought he might've had a stroke and the casino people thought he was mentally disabled (the change lady even gave him a "bless his heart" expression when he walked away from her window). Fun little thing while we wait - what are everyone's favourite and least favourite scenes from the four episodes aired so far?

My favourite (Wally is a close second obv) has to be the intro of Evil Coop, with that loving amazing music and classic Lynch night driving shot. After 20 minutes of mildly unfamiliar oddities this is the moment where my favourite filmmaker came back in force.

Least favourite is probably in ep 3 - the hosed-up woman and son we see in the house across from Dougie and Jade's sex den. Just felt too disconnected from anything and more like Lynch just dipped into his early 00s website stuff for a second.
That's really hard to choose. I think my favorite was probably the nightmare creature in the glass box emerging and then ripping apart Sam and Tracey. Or basically any scene with Dougie in the casino or his house. Those were all solid gold. Least favorite would probably be Wally. It was hilarious and I was laughing my rear end off all the way through it, but it also felt like it dragged on too long and it was kind of unbearable and I hope that's his only appearance for the entire season.
