Interlude 3; Despair & Disrepair

Pluto Archaeological site:

Saros posted:

A single spacesuited figure waits at the bottom of the shaft.

“H-hello... hello?” calls the figure over the radio, “This is Dr Romana Lafever, I am the head of the scientific expedition here. All our people have withdrawn to the domes and we are unarmed. I don’t know who you are but I implore you not to disturb the site, this is the most important archaeological site in the history of humanity and must be handled with extreme delicacy.”

One of the marines picks up the figure and gently moves them aside, the low gravity making them bounce and slide along the slick surface of the ice. They doggedly clamber to their feet and come bounding back and another marine moves swiftly to block them but pulls aside at a brief signal from Autoshades.

“Doctor” he begins, looming over the figure in his armor, “we are going to breach and inspect the site, we have no wish to harm any of your team but our orders are clear so please stay out of the way for your own safety.”

The Doctor stares up at him, helmet visor revealing a woman in her forties with concern written clearly across her face. After a moment's consideration she nods, “very well but I must accompany you, you clearly have no idea how to treat such an important site.”

Autoshades considers, “might be good to have an egghead along sir” pipes up his Lieutenant “who knows what's in there?”

After a moment more Autoshades tags the Doctor as a civilian VIP in the tac system and a protector drone flashes silently out of the darkness of the shaft and settles alongside her. She jumps in fright, the low gravity turning the sudden movement into and awkward tumble which gets a chuckle from a couple of the Marines.

“Very well Doctor, now what can you tell us about the object?” asks Autoshades.

The Doctor watches in horror as a breaching drone settles against the surface of the structure, a dozen appendages probing the surface trying to find anything resembling a weak spot.

“Over there,” she turns and points, “it seems to be an entranceway or airlock of some sort or at least the structure wall is much thinner. The structure overall is incredibly absorbent of emissions and extends across multiple kilometers under the ice. The ice here is slowly cycling downwards towards Pluto’s inner ocean but at this depth anything on the surface would have taken roughly five million years to sink this far. Ice samples taken from the drilling seem to confirm this.

The figure turns back to Autoshades, “do you understand what this means? This... structure, complex, whatever it is has been here on a desolate iceball on the edge of the system since before our ancestors descended from the trees.”

Autoshades only response is a slow shrug, exaggerated by the armor automatically rolling his shoulder mounted cannon to stay level.

The breaching drone repositions where indicated and fires up its hull-cutters, the blinding glare casting harsh shadows against the walls of the shaft. Cutting progresses with glacial slowness, the structure is impossibly hard and seems to absorb most of the energy applied to it. The drone clatters, shifting position in an almost nervous fashion and throws up requests to use shaped nuclear charges against the structure as its mechanical instincts scream that extended exposure like this is disastrous to any operation.

Autoshades rolls his eyes and locks down all the tactical nukes carried by his formation as one of the marines mimes getting blown up and out of the shaft by their own bombs, the Doctor stares in confusion as the massive armored figure bounces up into the sky accompanied by laughter across the general channel.

After nearly twenty minutes a section of dark material, barely enough to allow marine armor through gives way and scout drones whip through to survey the interior.

“All clear sir” reports a tech, “looks like a cylindrical space maybe twenty meters long and five wide with weird spiraling trails set into the walls, uhh kind of like a giant rifle barrel?”

The Specialist steps through the opening and slowly makes his way to the far side of the cavity. As he reaches out and touches the far wall the combat armor of the entire company screams alerts as sudden, massive surge of electromagnetic radiation pours out from the interior of the structure, seconds later a shuddering rumble shakes the company.

“Colonel report! We are seeing a massive EM spike and ice-quakes, what is going on down there?” calls the operations commander from orbit.

“Unknown sir”, reports Autoshades, “we have just entered the structure and it seems to have triggered some response.”

Autoshades armor throws up an emissions summary, the tactical program is calling it a very muffled reactor overload and subsequent core dump but the readings are all over the place.

“What was that, what have you done!” yells the Doctor, fighting with the drone as it prevents her from peering through the hole cut in the structure.

“Well…. it sort of looks like something tried to turn on and then exploded,” Autoshades replies, “Oh wow Doc, you don’t look happy?”

I may have missed earlier discussion of it, but in general, are there good defenses against these alpha-strike boats? Early game missiles defeinitely have the edge, I have given all sides higher tech in direct fire weapons than the equivalent missile tech to mitigate this somewhat.

That said box launchers are terribly inefficient at actually holding missiles. You get a lot more missiles overall from Magazine + launcher than a giant wad of box launchers.

The Martian design is faster, smaller, tougher and significantly cheaper but lacks the alpha strike capabilities. However people are despairing a bit too much I think, if you recall a 100 missile salvo mission killed a cruiser off Tempel 1 but that was without a proper PD system and you have a bunch more cruisers here as well as much greater weight of defensive fire.

For would-be designers, this is a nice web app for figuring out "optimal" missile designs for a current tech level. It may be a little too groggy for this LP, however, with its weird fractional MSP engines - Saros are you okay with using these designs or would you rather we use existing missile engines?

For some reason it adds .00001 to the size when using the arrows, weird.

Also I haven't messed with the "reserved MSP" side (to make mines/buoys/specialized missiles), but I assume it works.

Anyway a quick&dirty short range AMM for Trident Base:
pre:
 AdHoc AMM
Missile Size: 4 MSP (0.2 HS) Warhead: 1 Armour: 0 Manoeuvre Rating: 18

Materials Required: 0.25x Tritanium 1.724x Gallicite Fuel x193.75

Development Cost for Project: 197RP

MSP allocation:
Warhead MSP - 0.25
Fuel MSP - 0.0775
Agility MSP - 1.0625
Why 20m km? Because that's the range of the existing anti-fighter missile fire control and shorter range means more speed (generally) means better interception chance. Also round number.

Design away and feel free to submit new designs for missile or new classes of ships/fighters you would like to see.

Can people start throwing some ideas out about how to position ships for the defense of Triton, I would like to begin playing it out friday afternoon but the actual battle will take a while to resolve so there will be opportunities for adjustments as it progresses.

How do the relative missile ranges stack up? Especially with our faster DDGs, we might get some real mileage out of kiting the enemy fleet with volleys of missiles and letting the fact that they're closing and we're retreating adjust the ranges enough that they can't hit us in return. May as well use some of that missile capacity.

The Size 4 are only carried by the PDC and the Size 2 are our standard ship to ship missiles carried by most of our missile ships. The S3 missiles carried by the IC box ships are expected to reach at minimum 50m km. They do have trouble targeting ships under 3000T however thanks to their fire control resolution. The IC Missile cruiser was observed firing large, slow moving (4-6000kps) missiles from 100m km+ which then split into multiple independent seekers at a few hundred thousand kilometers so it's primary purpose seems to be saturating ground defences from beyond their range.

Pash posted:

Noting this is the size for missile there from our PDC or is that one of our ships range?

Plan Porcupine:

Looks promising, only thing lacking is any attempt to scout the approaching fleet (with or without escorts for the scoutship) and targeting priorities.

Pash posted:

We have a strong PDC on Neptune, if we can I say make them come inside its range to fight. Plus if we can get the captured box launcher tugged back in time we can load it up and have it fire eve)n if its engines are shot.

If possible in time the captured DD will be moored to the fleet base and loaded with standard anti-ship missiles (40m km range) as a final line of defence.

Affi posted:

They will probably keep their tenders and troop ships a fair bit behind the action. But if we could nab them that'd be very very good.

They will benefit from us being defensive. (They'll get to reload their destroyers).

It's unlikely they will leave them unescorted but the troopships are only about 2/3 the speed of their slowest combat ship (the box launcher DD's) so they may send the fighting force on ahead. Also the IC doesn't know it but our PDC likely significantly outranges their box launcher missiles.

Crazycryodude posted:

Although on second though, if we try and kite them in during Porcupine our missile ships are gonna have to fly right through the minefield, so we can't really do both.

E2:Saros can hiding behind a moon (like Psamathe) help reduce our sensor return in-universe? I remember that the SB ship managed to hide during the attack on S-T by going dark and lurking near the surface - can we do the same? (I know it doesn't do anything in Aurora terms, but maybe you're fluffing sensors as working ever so slightly different in this universe and can just act like the IC don't see us until later than they actually do? This of course works both ways, they can hide from us whenever it's convenient for them, too.)

It's trivial to dodge your own minefields at the scale Aurora operates at. I'll allow this hiding with smaller ships, say destroyers and smaller but bigger ones are pretty drat obvious to scanners thanks to the surefeit of TNE's used in their construction.

Incoming friendly ETA:

TF Dumbo has split in response to the IC move. The Support vessel and the captured missile boat are slower at 2000kps and lagging behind while the others race ahead.

Support vessel: 5 days 8 hours.
TF Dumbo: 3 Days 19 hours.

Yes the PDC has resolution 70 sensors so can detect 3500T+ ships out to max range

Triton currently doesnt have the capacity to drydock and properly repair cruiser and larger ships at the moment. Luckily the CAA is not actually that badly damaged, think of it as a temporary patch job that needs to be redone after the main repair yard arrives.

How likely are we to actually find any scouts (due to their stealth tech)? If we have a chance I would say use the remainder of our anti fighter destoryers (or anything else with a sensor designed to spot small things) to scout near Neptune. They should look for scouts that might be trying to see our formations and stuff (which I guess means we should dispatch the fleet to assigned positions as late as possible), keeping out of enemy fleet range and grouping up with our fleet for the battle.

An aside if you can't tell I'm absolutely loving this LP so far! Good work!

You just swept the Neptunian system pretty comprehensively and only flushed out the one scout.

Passive scouts are very hard to spot but the IC has fleet scouts with big actives like the Gale class you'll see as soon as they turn on. The question was more do you want to reserve a few ships to try take them out if they stray ahead.

Battleplan

Pash posted:

Plan Porcupine:

First have the manufacturing facilities make as many mines and fighters as they can before the IC gets here. Lets try to deploy the mines a bit outside of Neptune where their wont be a risk of them targeting our own ships.

For fleet deployment ball up the ships near Triton to make sure the enemy has to engage us inside our PDC range (was it a missile PDC?). If the PDC is a missile pdc (I forget) then position our fleet so that our own missile ships will have about the same range as the PDC missiles. That way all our missiles should hit around the same time to try to overwhelm the enemy point defense. I say ball up particularly because I want to try to get the box missile ships to launch their alpha strike while we can bring the largest amount of point defense to bear. For this reason I believe we should keep our ships fairly tightly grouped with anti missile and anti fighter ships near the front.

We should, however, try to keep the carrier and fleet support ships a little further from the action.

If the box launcher ship makes it back in time tug it to a point where its range would equal that of our PDC missiles (if they are that). Reload it and tell the skeleton crew to target the largest enemy warship. If we can put a good dent in its armor before combat starts that will help our brawlers a lot.

Have our fighter hold back if they can until the engagement begins, then have them strike at the enemy capital ships. Have the anti-fighter ships focus on the enemy fighters.

Pash posted:

Yes. Assign a couple of the anti fighter destoryers as escorts. The ships should be ordered to stay outside of enemy missile ranges while maintaining sensor contact with them. This assumes we can detect the box launchers while still being outside their range. Have the scouts generally kite them back to Neptune so that the escort anti-fighter ships can join up with the fleet for the battle.

Pash posted:

Ya, basically this. If the scouts appear to have strayed to far away send a missile or anti-fighter ship after them, under the strict orders not to get within 100m km of the enemy fleet (and likely stay further away than that).

I'm basically running with this at the moment with tweaks suggested inthread or on discord. I will try combine the mine/fleet/PDC missile salvoes as closely as possible given the limitations of the system. Changes are welcome as there are a lot of moving parts so updates will be slower/smaller.

The feeling is gone as quickly as it arrives but as it leaves another worrying fact asserts itself. His armor is locking down comms and weapons as it registers a massive electronic warfare onslaught and amber alerts flash along his helmet display as it struggles to maintain its security in the face of something attempting a crude but incredibly powerful intrusion onto the Marine’s secure network.

The protector drone holding the doctor slowly settles to the ground as it shuts down in the face of being compromised by the intrusion and the doctor writhes free of its grasp and leaps through the hole in the structure.

Autoshades curses and throws himself after her, registering as he does all of the company drones settling or slowly falling from the sky as they go into emergency shutdown mode. He passes beyond the threshold and stumbles, the electronic assault increasing in intensity and beginning to freeze his suit motors and visual display. Suddenly everything goes dark, the armor of both him and the specialist inside the structure rebooting with all the external lights extinguished.

As his armor slowly comes back online it fills with strange images and noise of unknown origin.

Lagging almost 200 million km behind the main IC fleet Triton's passive arrays pick out four Iron Lady transports moving at 1600kps.

30 March, 1211hrs

Tornado, having picked up her escort frigates diverts north to hopefully get a look at the following fleet. IC main force is 500mkm from Neptune and The Triton defense fleet moves to the moon closest to them, Psanthe.

1st April, 1431hrs

Tornado and company fall in behind the incoming fleet. It's now close enough for the cruisers to be tracked on passives so Tornado is dispatched to investigate the following force.

1741hrs

Here's hoping for unprotected transports however unlikely that is.

The transport and support ships also head out to the north in case the battle goes badly.

2 April, 0659hrs

Right now our ships are orbiting Psamathe, where their missiles and those of the PDC have equal reach out from Triton. Moving further out means losing PDC support and no other mine pods are in position where the IC forces will likely run over them.

Triton Defense:

However the spacers are champing at the bit to go after the (still powerful) IC forces before they can move the rest of the invasion force up.

MVP of the round goes to Cryo for his missile pod idea.

:siren:Do we press the attack despite losing PDC support or sit tight behind its powerful missile umbrella.:siren:

Interlude 5 - It could be worse

Triton Fleet Base

Alan Ranjani was having a bad day.

In reflection it wasn’t actually that unusually awful by his own standards. Alan was what one could consider, unlucky.

Alan was used to everything being more difficult for him. The son of immigrant hydroponics technicians to a small freehold dome who had spent his first years in Earth’s crushing gravity he was always noticeably shorter than the proper ‘red blooded’ Martians which for his childhood singled him out for torment over his ‘earther’ heritage. Over the years this had imbued in him a sort of stoic resilience in which he would push onwards towards his goal despite the world seemingly conspiring against him. This carried him through to place second in his engineering class at Mar’s prestigious Valles Marineris university and then, just when wondrous vistas seemed to be opening up for him he was conscripted by the navy.

Two years into his six year term he was Alan Ranjani - Chief missile technician (Compulsory service) and continuing his lucky streak he wound up posted to Triton, a backwater widely considered to be a suicide posting if things ever got hot. All this is why on that fateful day in March 2052 when Colonel ‘Crazycryo’ (as he was affectionately known) bustled onto his missile maintenance deck (accompanied by several aides of course) and demanded the impossible Alan Ranjani simply took a deep breath and got on with it.

Mate standard (single) missile engines to push a drone filled with delicate electronics and layered in unbalanced armor, sure why not? Tear out the guts of traffic control buoys and refit them with nuclear submunitions, I guess it’s not impossible? Do it all in less than a week? Hmm.

Alan didn’t sleep for three days as he and his techs built and rebuilt the prototypes before reprogramming the fabricators and starting them churning out the new designs. Once it was done and rolling he took five steps to the nearest seat and promptly collapsed into unconsciousness. Hundreds of modified buoys rolled off the lines before time was up and the ships had to depart, far exceeding even the most optimistic estimates given by those above.

Nobody heard anything for two days.

Triton base was awash with rumors but nobody really knew anything until command released a short statement and missile footage showing an IC cruiser tearing apart with special accolades given to Alan and his missile techs. He of course missed this, intent on his dinner and chasing down defect reports from the Trident’s missile stores his first warning was when three dozen cheering sailors burst into the mess, dragged him out and carried him and his junior techs in a triumphant victory lap of the base’s fighter bay.

Bobbing along above some cheering ratings in the low gravity of Triton base, Alan, for perhaps the first time in his life felt like he belonged.

With sit tight the winner Kommdant General Mukaikubo elects to remain within the PDC's umbrella.

3 April, 0102hrs

The marine raiding forces intercept and blow away another Transport.

The two IC spearhead forces head north for a rondevous away from the mines.

and the cruiser and a destroyer split from the training transports and move to join the IC spearhead at 2300kps

3 April, 0308hrs

The IC spearhead forces combine and move towards Psanthe, they seem to have detected Triton fleet on actives.

3 April, 0510hrs

After two hours suddenly three EM sources turn on 25m km from Psanthe closing at 5040kps. It looks like the active sensor of the fighters detected earlier attacking FSC Tornado (now renamed to Observed Peril with Colonel Starfyter in charge).

The majority of the force runs to avoid the incoming enemy fighters whie the Deimos fighters move to interccept and the anti-fighter frigates hide by Psanthe to ambush.

Soon small shields are detected around the active contacts.

3 April, 0535hrs

Twenty more shield contacts spring into life to the great dismay of General Mukaikubo, it looks like the Steve Jobs class must be carrier.

3 April, 0605hrs

Victory takes two hits from a salvo of 10 size 1 missiles. It must be a ranging salvo as no more follow immediately.

Not long after the fighters enter active sensor range of the closing frigates and are id'd at 300 and 350T respectively. The enemy fighters are smaller than the intended resolution of our frigate fire control (500T resolution) so they cannot lock on them just yet with their fire controls.

3 April, 0615hrs

The Deimos, seemingly undetected swing into range of the fighters. Plasma fire begins but it is hard to hit the extremely fast targets.

Not long after missiles come streaking back at the Deimos's. Three suffer armor penetrations and lose an engine falling behind fast as the chase continues.

A second salvo comes in and another ten hits across four Deimos leaves another two limping behind.

The enemy fighters break for the IC spearhead at max rate, the seven functional Deimos 25k km behind and slowly losing ground.

Salvo fire begins and the Deimos start to burn the enemy fighters from the sky one at a time. No more return fire is evident so it seems likely they have exhausted their missile stocks.

One by one the fleeing fighters are destroyed or left crippled but they inexorably pull ahead.

3 April, 0619hrs

After several minutes of this the missile sensor on Don't forget to breathe pick up a huge incoming salvo. 130 size 1 missiles are homing in rapidly on the main task force.

The Task force turns to flee and prepares its point defenses.

Thirty missiles are intercepted by the desperate point defense fire but another hundred bore on, swinging at the last second to target the already damaged VICTORY.

Oh.... oh no. Victory is hammered terribly by the wave but emerges intact, however a missile peetrates an already damaged section and nuclear fire tears through her flag bridge....

Certain crew may not have been wearing their regulation vacsuits.

Two main engines and half her armament is utterly wrecked by the barrage and Kommdant-General Mukaikubo is killed when the flag bridge is destroyed. 63 other crewmembers are also killed in the conflagration.

:rip:Mukaikubo:rip:

Victory is still alive but is in no way fit for combat. If it were not for her previous damage she could probably have weathered the storm, the survivors turn the ship for Triton.

The faster IC fighters pull out of combat range from the Deimos, leaving behind half their number.

The spearhead force is standing off 130m km from Triton and has slowed to a stop.

Much further back the IC is still moving up its reinforcements and the transports.

So did our hidden frigates reveal themselves or not? If they did, might as well join them to the main body.

There are two frigates escorting the scout Observed peril positioned between the IC spearhead and the Transports. The other two are with the main Triton defense force.

Pash posted:

As long as something is repairable with the dockyards coming to us it will be worth repairing for us. At least until command tells us not to. Takes a lot longer to build a ship than make some wreak slightly functional.

Pretty much this, shipbuilding takes ages but repairing much less so especially as many components are modular and can be prefabricated.

Affi posted:

So we're all sitting tight even though they have a range advantage to us?

What's going to happen is they're going to reload and do this again.

My take is they're going to sit at maximum range and pummel us, we need to go at them the second their Marissa meyers blow their load.

Question: how feasible is it to have our two escort frigates attempt to attack the iron ladies? Two thirds of their escort left.

The Ford class can't carry *that* many reloads in total and they are likely saving them for the PDC (that they just moved into active range of) but the carrier probably has armament for at least a few sorties, especially now half their fighters are gone.

Affi posted:

I think we have two frigates escorting our scout ship? Those two against a Marissa Meyer? Might be worth losing both to have a shot at four defenceless iron ladies?

Also a question for saris: how big exactly is the Martian fleet? Or is this mostly storytelling and you don't want to paint yourself into a corner?

The brave charge might work, at the moment the Cruiser and other DD are moving to join the spearhead but there is only a single Marissa Mayer with 50 missiles left to defend the transports. You have two frigates and fleet scout. However the frigates might not have enough missiles to do a lot of damage to the transports after taking down the Mayer (if they even could).

The marines all are far insystem between Saturn and Uranus commerce raiding but if you can stall the IC forces they could be recalled.

I'm not going to give exact numbers for any sides fleets at this point but you are working with about 15% of the total Martian fleet with a bias towards lighter combatants.

Pash posted:

I think its likely the IC actives already have detected all three of those ships. As they know which class our scout ships are I would guess the destroyer would split its fire between the frigates rather than wasting shots on the scout.

It's quite possible the IC hasn't seen the frigates and is only tracking them from the scout's active emissions as they have stayed at long range and the IC sensors are generally designed to resolve larger vessels.

The IC spearhead closes to 124m km from Triton. The Martian fighters move to rejoin Triton fleet which is repositioning itself between triton and the IC forces. Victory continues to fall back to Triton for repairs.

3 April 0852hrs

Triton fleet reaches its assigned point. 62m km from the IC spearhead and they slow to a glacial 500kps, they are barely out of maximum range of the Trident PDC.

Lt-General Yellerbill aboard the Don't forget to breathe is the senior officer after the unfortunate demise of General Mukaikubo.

3 April, 0917hrs

The fleet falls back towards Triton to keep the range open and draw the IC into combat range of the PDC.

Far back, 400m km from Tirton the Observed peril is, well, observing.

3 April, 0922hrs

Falling back seems to have worked, the IC spearhead returns to closing at 2300kps. It's less than a million km from Max PDC range at this point...

3 April, 0807hrs

The main IC force continues to close with Triton. The defense fleet falls back to draw them further into PDC range.

300m km back the invasion force closes slowly.

3 April, 0930hrs

The PDC locks and goes to rapid fire targeting the two cruisers with the fleet.

At roughly the same time the ships split with the presumed direct fire ships closing at 2300kps.

Misiles away!

3 April 1015hrs

The Marissa mayer missile boats peel away at 55m km from the Triton fleet and the rest of the ships increas speed to over 3200kps!

The Bill gates also switches on its actives.

3 April, 1026hrs

Ten minutes later the first PDC missile salvoes pass the Triton fleet to the cheers of the crew!

Thirty seconds later however... 115 size three missiles are spotted incoming. Clearly presents from the Mayers.

3 April, 1028hrs

Light cruiser Maskirovka with Colonel Pharnakes is the primary target of the salvo and despite the task forces defenses shooting dow 36 missile and her dodging another 19 she takes nearly fifty hits and is left a tumbling wreck. Luckily Colonel Pharnakes and 33 survivors make it to lifepods on time. Another 110 crew are missing presumed dead however.

Colonel Bozikeks Naimoi is lightly damaged by hits but her armor takes the blows.

3 April, 1107hrs

Half an hour later its time for some revenge as the PDC missiles close.

Worryingly an enormous barrage of fire meets the first salvo and all are destroyed before closing to range. The second salvo suffers the same fate.

However the third seems to catch many of the larger weapons cycling and sneaks four hits through.

The fouth does even better, blowing down the Zuckerberg's shields and tearing into her armor.

Another three salvoes and the Zuckerberg is streaming atmosphere from rents in her hull but soldiers gamey on.

The 11th and final salvo directed at her gets only a single hit and the ship remains intact. Damage is unknown but she definitely took several hits through her armor.

3 April, 1114hrs

The next salvo switches to the Bill Gates class and there is a definite slackening in the PD volume.

Hit after hit is racked up.

Soon the Bill Gates is also streaming atmosphere from her hull as nuclear fire finds it's way into her interior spaces.

However the Gates survives as well and the IC ships turn back towards the Martian fleet.

The last few salvoes are heading for the fleeing Marissa Mayer missile boats. However they run out of fuel as the missile boats have retreated out of range.

3 April, 1131hrs

:siren: Alert! 11 fighter contacts closing fast! Same contacts as earlier, looks like they have rearmed.

3 April, 1135hrs

The missile destroyers and cruiser target and begin to fire upon the Zuckerberg.

The enemy fighters are leading the other ships by 10m km.

3 April, 1146hrs

A large salvo of 100 fighter missiles is spotted incoming fast.

Thirty are shot down and another twenty miss but 54 hit CL Naiomi and she staggers as nuclear fire engulfs her.

Remarkably, no casualties despite the destruction of a crew quarters and most of her armor. Col. Bozikek thanks his luck as the damaged ship is ordered to turn for home.

3 April, 1158hrs

It's soon time for payback as the missiles from the Triton force close on the Zuckerberg.

For some reason PD fire is much less effective this time around. The Zuckerbergs shields are also running lower than earlier, some generators must have been damaged in the previous PDC attacks.

12 hits in a single salvo takes her shields down!

Soon the canned sunshine is digging deeply into her.

Suddenly she staggers and slows to 1600kps, engines flaring out.

The next salvo pounces and her reactor begins to give way.

:rip: CG Long Rifle claims the kill.

Roughly half the missile stocks of the fleet remain.

Things are a bit crowded.

General Dr Snark command of the fast ships and sets off in pursuit of the fleeing IC ships.

3 April, 1212hrs

As the two forces begin to separate a sudden contact springs onto the screens a bit over a million km north!

Fifty-five enormous missiles, Inbound to Triton!

The missiles burn past ignoring the outgoing ships...

However CL Naiomi is still in a position to intercept!

The fleets sensors lose the missiles and CL Naomi desperately begins to run a search pattern...

Unfortunately it's not meant to be, Naiomi fails to detect the missiles and they pass silently. Cursing, the now commander Yellerbill calls up Triton base and alerts them they have incoming. ..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUsLlFjKQHY
Alarms ring across Triton's settlements as incoming nuclear weapons are confirmed.

3 April 1331hrs

After an hour the IC transports turn and head for Uranus. The rest of their fleet seems to be consolidating however.

Interestingly at about the same time the Elon Musk clas missile cruiser drops out of formations and basically stops. It is 127m km from Triton, Tactical suggests it may be at its maximum sensor range and can't go any further and still provide guidance to the missiles heading for Triton...

The Marine ships are still loitering around commerce raiding. Command orders half to move to position to intercept ships retreating from the battle off Triton, this will take several days. The Marine assault transport is also still docked at Triton Fleet base. It will be ordered to move up and attempt to capture any damaged ships.

Triton defense fleet is only very slowly overhauling the retreating IC ships.

However the slower element is only moving at 2300kps and the Elon Musk is motionless. If they wish to protect the Elon Musk they will have to give battle sooner rather than later.

3 April, 1334hrs

After a few minutes the missile cruiser turns off its active and runs to rejoin its friends. Someone must have done the maths about us overtaking them.

3 APril, 1355hrs

The Zuckerburg coming to assist from the reinforcements increases speed to what is probably its max.

3 April, 1503hrs

An hour passes and the range only closes by less than a million km. Stern chases are sloooow.

3 April, 1804hrs

The IC reinforcements come to within active sensor range.

At the same time Naiomi reaches Triton fleet base and begins repairs. It will take nearly two weeks to patch her with current resources but this should be greatly increased by the incoming repair yard.

3 April, 2024 hrs

General Yellerbill become worried about more sorties from the IC fighters and orders a full strike on the Steve Jobs Carrier with his remaining misiles. Reserving only two salvoes for close defense his ships begin to fire.

Sniper4265, Sandman, Veloxyll and Matryoshka are our missile ship captains.

Nine salvoes of 22 missiles each go screaming towards the IC carrier.

3 April 2100hrs

They begin to stream past the first set of IC ships...

Who cheekily reach out with long range weapons and knock a handful down, this repeats every couple of salvoes.

3 April 2103hrs

A few minutes later... impact!

A CIWS roars into life, knocking down four missiles but 16 connect! Shields are down and the armor starts to ablate.

By the third salvo the thin skinned carrier is bleeding air...

Not a good day for our friend.

Fourth salvo...18 hits and the carrier lurches to the side slowing to around 1000kps.

Fifth salvo and uhhhh holy shittt!

One of her engines takes a hit and decides that everything within a thousand kilometers should be thin plasma. That's one hell of an explosion.

Artists impression of the now (extremely dead) Steve Jobs Carrier.

Cheeers ring out across the fleet but a minute later the sensors spot another wave of fighter missiles incoming...

22 are shot down by point defense fire.

Colonel Sad King Billy's Tarnished Fist is the target and she dodges desperately but 51 missiles impact.

Somehow she emerges from the inferno relatively intact but with much of her armor gone.

Sad King Billy insists on accompanying the fleet further, downplaying the damage to his superiors.

3 April 2227hrs

An hour and a half passes as the stern chase continues. The IC ships begin to slowly join up into one conglomerate as their remaining support ships flee.

4 April, 0016hrs

A new day and the IC fleet finally completes it's rondevous, our ships still 16m km distant.

The IC fleet splits with the presumed empty missile ships retreating and the rest turning to come for battle!

Strap in for Close Quarters Battle.

4 April, 0148hrs

The fleets close within 300k km and fire starts to be exchanged. Both sides appear to be holding their missile ships for point blank range fire where PD will be much less effective.

Fire begins to hit the hostile DDG Marissa Mayer, hoping to cripple her before she can fire her missiles.

As the range closes a massive salvo of plasma reaches out and tears into her. Unfortunately at the same time Lasers from the Koshkins smash into the DD Tarnished Fist and disable her engine leaving her drifiting but intact. The Martian missile ships go into rapid fire at the Bill Gates class and after the second round of hits she breaks to run streaming atmosphere into space.

The Marissa Mayer also turns to run but another salvo leaves her a tumbling wreck having never fired her missiles. Perhaps the initial shots damaged her fire control?

The fleets burn hard past each other exchanging fire at point blank range and a masive autocannon salvo from the light cruisers tears into one of the hostile Koshkin's sending another IC ship to ruin.

The two fleets spin around and close to 20k km, absolute point blank range and exchange another brutal round of fire.
The large missile ships are out of ammo and are falling back with the frigates in tow. The frigates are still sending missiles seeking after the fleeing Bill Gates.

The two fleets twist around each other at point blank range, the Zukerberg gets the jump on three of the slowed fighters and tears them apart with focused autocannon fire.
The Bill gates takes a salvo up the rear and her main egine goes up in a terrible burst of light. The ship itself survives but is left disabled, the frigates quickly detonate their incoming missiles in a snap decision by Col. Veloxyll to give a chance to take the ship intact.

Not a good time for the Bill Gates.

One last pass and Col. Trogilus's CL Sagan burns past the second Mikhail Koshkin at point blank range and hammers her with every one of his autocannons leaving her a burning hulk.

The Martians try to open the range but the CA Falling outside normal Moral constraints, captained by Tythas has been the focus of IC fire for some time now and a series of hull penetrations leaves her disabled with 77 casualties.

The fleet turns back in a desperate attempt to shield her but the Zuckerberg slides right alongside her and opens up with her full completment of weapons.

Tythas, standing in the wreckage of his flag bridge gives the order to abandon ship before dashing for his own lifepod.

Only the Zuckerberg remains in the fight and the fleet diverts to give her a full broadside.

Zuckerberg takes fire from CAA Don't forget to breathe.

Don't forget to Breathe claims the kill! With that the guns fall silent and only the fleeing IC missile and support ships remain.

Interlude 6 - Making friends

The noises and images subside as Autoshades armor completes its reboot and the motorised joints unfreeze and allow him to move again. At the far end of the tunnel by the still frozen specialist the wall irises open and the structure seems to be slowly coming alive around him as lights flicker on in the passageway beyond. His armor registers it as packing large levels of UV and automatically darkens his visor to compensate but the light is already changing spectrum to match that emitted by their suit lights, a fact which doesn’t go unnoticed by the doctor as she stares through into the now open passageway.

“Company form up” Autoshades orders, “third platoon secure the entrance and dig site, first and second prepare for incursion.”

He steps through the entrance into the wide passageway, weapons covering the left as his specialist watches the other direction.

“Um sir,” calls the specialist “I think you better look at this.”

Autoshades turns just in time to see a section of the roof about two meters square detach and flow downwards in the light gravity to settle onto the floor. It holds for a few seconds then rises up into a squat, stocky humanoid shape. It takes a moment before autoshades realises it appears to be mimicking the outline of his own armored shape. The copy is crude as if sketched roughly by a child but the resemblance is unmistakable.

After a moment's consideration he flicks his radio to a wideband broadcast, carefully considering his words when suddenly the Doctor bursts onto the channel.

“Hello, can you understand me?”

The figure rotates slightly to focus on the doctor and a strange, fluting voice speaking halting english comes over the channel. “Confirm designation, Doctor Lafever, Chief Scientist.”

The doctor takes a step back, mouth opening in surprise, “Y-yes, that is correct” she manages.

The figure rotates towards Autoshades, “Confirm designation, Colonel Autoshades, Combat unit.”

“Um, yes? I suppose?” he responds.

The figure remains motionless, “ Internal sensors operating in degraded state. Memory stores compromised, confirm scan reports, biological processing, substrate native, negative up/down ties.”

“I, yes, we are biological creatures” responds the doctor, “how do you understand us?”

“Subsentient algorithms monitor external activity” the voice responds, seeming to grow more confident with speaking as the conversation continues. The figure slides forward about a meter raising an ‘arm’ as it does so and never losing contact with the ground. “Lack of collaboration polity identifier, no matching biological designation, demonstrate collaboration status.”

Autoshades shifts back raising his weapon as the doctor responds, “Sorry we do not understand the question you are asking.”

The figure seems to consider for a second. “Guest status confirmed, possible uncontacted. You are speaking with Collaboration logistics facility intelligence in restricted zone, transit to unrestricted zone.”

The lights on one side of the tunnel go out and a section of the wall further down irises open. As they turn away towards the movement the figure flows upwards and appears to meld back into the ceiling.

Autoshades turns to the doctor and asks, “Thoughts Doc?”

“I think we better do what it says” she replies, “no use starting off on the wrong foot. At least we’re all going to be famous one way or another!”

“Oh great” he replies, “just what I always wanted.”

‘Just another day in the corps’ thinks Autoshades as he turns to follow the lights.

Here's a proposal based on our Discord discussions:

Cleanup
-Get salvagers out to the wrecks and life pods.
-Get tugs for the Tarnished Fist and the captured Gates.
-Get some Marines from Triton to take over the Gates.
-DDGs can return to base in shifts to re-arm. We do need a continuous guard on the cleanup ops. We're pretty much dry on missiles but the enemy doesn't necessarily know it.

Pursuit
-Fighters and Hubble frigates immediately pursue the enemy missile and support groups. Math says our fighters do have the fuel to catch them.
-Demand surrenders from everything we can and corral them back to where our fleet is doing cleanup.
-Try to get our Marine corvettes in the path that the enemy transports are taking to Uranus and go dark. The Meyer doesn't appear to be running its active sensor, so we're hoping to sneak up and beam it. For reference, math says that their passive thermals will detect a Zeus at full speed at 1.7M km.
-Capturing the collier, tanker, and Musk are high priority. They'll be handy if we ever take a shot at Uranus.

Longer Term
-After we've policed up the battlefield, return Triton fleet and our captures to base. Get repairs started on everything and re-arm our magazines.
-Build replacement fighters for our lost ones.
-Once the Hubbles are re-armed, do some sweeps for cloaked ships around the Neptune system.
-Send a fleet scout to surveil the enemy base at Titania. Goal is to assess the feasibility of an attack after we've patched the fleet up and 9th CRUDIV has arrived. Perhaps our friends in SB can help with intel on any PDCs?
-Continue raiding operations out of S-T.

Thoughts?

So I'm basically going to run with this tomorrow unless people have objections or further additions...

Also any further volunteers for some voice acting would be great.

4 April, 0355hrs

The enemy commander refuses to see reason and the fighters are forced to fire upon and destroy an enemy destroyer before the rest will surrender leaving their ships intact.

Elsewhere the WindHund, captained by Innocent bystander heads for Titania to sweep it with her sensors intermittently blipping her active to keep tabs on the fleeing enemy transports.

4 April, 0506hrs

As the missile ships surrender the rest of the IC support ships scatter at max speed.

As the fighters run down the Robert Ford class the other ships disappear into the darkness and the fighters lack the fuel to pursue properly.

4 April, 1615hrs

Several hours pass as SAR operations continue and prize crews take over the captured ships. The missile ships are heading to rearm, picking up survivors as they go.

4 April, 2030hrs

Most of Triton defense fleet comes to rondevous and prepares its prizes for transport.

WindHund is keeping an eye of the IC forces and going in for a peek at Uranus.

Colonel Pharnakes is also rescued from his drifing lifepod.

Captured ships asessment:

The captured Robert Ford has a tractor beam so it is linked with the disabled Bill Gates and made ready for towing. It also serves as a fleet support and maintenence ships so the vast set of stores and spares will allow the repair of IC ships at Triton with much greater ease.

Triton fleet and the captured ships make for Triton at a slow pace restricted by the towing. Support vessels are en route to provide assistance and take the crippled destroyer Tarnished Fist under tow as well.

5 April, 1220hrs
Sixteen hours pass while the fleet slowly moves towards Triton.

Windhund blips her sensor again and suddenly there are more contacts, inbound towards the IC transports at 3000kps and coming from what appears to be the rough direction of Saturn.

Three small cruisers are detected but the contact is at maximum range so will not pick up anything smaller than 3500T.

5 April, 1322hrs

WindHund goes dark and heads for a rendezvous with the Marine ships heading outsystem. After she gets an escort she will go for a sweep of Uranus.

Earth apparently does not give a poo poo about our war as a civillian mining colony (generated by the game, nothing to do with me) pops up on an asteroid nearby.

6 April, 0032hrs

12 hours later the battlefield is finally coming into order. THe Salvagers are going out and the rest of the ships are coming in, the cripples all under tow.

6 April, 0612hrs

The main force arrives and begins to rearm and refuel as well as dropping off a few disposessed captains.

6 April, 1342hrs

WindHund and the marines are heading for rendezvous while the troop transports continue to fall back to Uranus. The extra cruisers are nowhere to be seen but there's not much chance of spotting them at this range.

6 April, 1942hrs

The Towships are bringing in their cripples as the Fleet base readies itself for repair.

In the last minutes of the 6th April the thermal contacts of the Transports are lost.

7 April, 0242hrs

All the ships arrive and it's quite the motley assortment you have!

Both Tritons slipways are currently busy, the fitting of a new engine to the Marissa Mayer captured off Swift-Tuttle is going to take a long time but CL Naomi is a bit under two weeks from fully repaired.

8 April, 1642hrs
A day passes as the fleet reorganises, makes repairs and prepares to sortie.

We also have a new arrival soon!

WindHund and the Marines have also rendezvoused and are ready to scout Uranus when ordered.

Captured IC Ships:

Marine Detatchment:

Incoming repair yard:

||| TOP SECRET |||

quote:

From the Desk of;

Fleet Archon Pintilie

Commander.

I’m sure you’ve seen the reports of the attack on Mars by now but unfortunately the reality of the situation is somewhat worse than we have made public. The IC moved in-system with most of their Jupiter fleet and we countered with a large portion of the home Fleet. However it was just a diversion and an enormous missile strike, no doubt using missile ships similar to the cruiser you have captured materialised from a different vector and overwhelmed Martian space defense.

How we failed to spot the launching ships is unknown but we suspect the IC has developed some sort of low observability technology and these ships represent a first strike strategic ability, something which we did not expect the IC to possess. Luckily the missiles did not primarily seem to be programmed to target the surface so civilian casualties were light but the Deimos shipyards were badly damaged and a significant section of the terraforming ring and orbital mirrors is simply gone. Estimates of the setback to the terraforming effort start at ten years and get progressively worse from there.

Unsurprisingly in response to this the Central Planning Committee has tied my hands with its demands we deploy to protect Mars leaving me with very little in the way of mobile forces. I have even had to obscure the departure of 9th Cruiser Division else they would likely have been reassigned to the inner system as well. At this point i’m afraid there are no more reinforcements coming and you are just going to have to make do with what you have.

Commander, we need to strike back at the Corporates and demonstrate that we retain the ability to hit them where it hurts the most, their bottom line. Your commerce raiding efforts are bearing fruit but we need a more forceful demonstration of our will to fight. I am hereby ordering a strike against the fuel harvesting operations of Uranus or Saturn, you must cripple the IC’s Sorium harvesting operations around one of Saturn or Uranus in a demonstration to them that we are both prepared and able to escalate this war if necessary.

Intelligence is attached on the defenses of both moon systems and what is known about IC fleet deployments in the outer system. Your remarkable successes combined with the call from the inner system conflict seems to have stripped Saturn’s fleet complement to the bone but it still has an extensive defense network distributed throughout its moons. Uranus has a much smaller defense network but has recently been reinforced with mobile units transferred from Saturn. The primary settlements, Titan and Titania, have large ground complements which at this point I do not expect you to be able to overcome to occupy the moons, I merely ask the incredible not the impossible!

Mars calls Commander.

||| MESSAGE ENDS |||

Objectives:
(In priority order)
  • Destroy fuel harvesting operations around Saturn or Uranus.
  • Destroy orbital infrastructure of Titan or Titania.
  • Destroy IC outer system fleet units.
  • Consideration towards limiting Civilian casualties is at your discretion.

Fleet intel has kindly provided us with these poor resolution scans of the Saturnian and Uranian systems as well as force estimates. Ships under 3000T are unlikely to show up in the scans.

Saturn:

At least one squadron each of both Fighters and Fast-attack gunboats.
At least 6 ground defense installations massing 2000-6000T split between Titan and Rhea.
A small fleet presence, unknown composition but no more than a small cruiser division.

Uranus:

2 ground defense installations on Umbriel, 2000-6000T each
At least three cruisers and escorts, possibly even more have transferred in from Saturn.
A squadron of Fighters or Fast-attack gunboats.

Both systems may also have small defense satellites around the populations to protect them from missile fire.

Choice of target.

:siren:Please vote for Saturn or Uranus. :siren:

If someone wants to propose alternative crazy off the wall plans then feel free.

Missiles need an active sensor lock and can't coast ballistic, they're direct fire only.

You can I think attach a waypoint to a body and have missiles home on that without active locks. They do need independent seeker warheads though for final attack.

If you managed both they'd probably get cracking on 100m statues of you stomping a man in a suit asap.

The orders are in priority order and you aren't expected to achieve them all.

Bear in mind though that some of those PDC are probably missile PDC so you aren't going to be able to sneak around them without taking fire.

Yes you can capture shipyards. You even have a special tow ship arriving at Neptune shortly.

People were asking for this stuff in discord:

Basically how the territories shake out at the moment. Terran space (white) has been declared off limits to military ships, if you are detected there they will probably be quite grumpy.

Distances:

Neptune - Uranus is 1.63 billion km
Neptune - Saturn is 3.33 billion km
Uranus - Saturn is 1.74 billion km
Jupiter - Saturn is 1.44 billion km
Jupiter - Uranus is 2.41 bllion km

You're still... somewhere. Actually, where the hell is the carrier?

Carrier is at the top of the Triton defence fleet. In the previous battle it sortied it's fighters then just hung out with the support ships before returning to pick up the fighters and participate in SAR operations.

I'll have a look at repair times tonight and see what we're working with but likely some Martian assets like Victory and probably Tarnished Fist (smashed engines) will take long enough to repair it will give the IC time to shift some forces out from Jupiter.

Saturn is ahead something like 18 to 5 though an exact count is tricky due to changing votes. For those fretting over the slowness of the captured IC missile ships remember you could always dispatch them first and have the rest of the fleet overtake after repairs are completed. Call max Martian fleet speed about 3000kps and the Mayers/Musk can make about 2300kps.

Please do feel free to contribute stuff to the thread! I believe someone was asking about their own news vid a while back? If you want to make stuff that fits in with the plot let me know and I can give you some suggestions.

8 April, 1400hrs
With the arrival of the John Phillip Holland Repair work speeds up.

The crippled Bill Gates and Marissa Mayer are stood down while Martian Engineers try to figure out a way to fabricate their replacement engines. Victory is 21 days from repair and Naomi is 6. Tarnished Fist needs an entire engine replacement so is over a month away.

The rest of the fleet can be patched up inside a day without occupying the slipways.

Senior Missile Technician (and toast of Triton Base) Ranjani reports his crew can fabricate size three missiles for the Marissa Mayer.

Finally new crews occupy and rename the captured ships that are ready to go. The Marissa Mayer has 50 of the new size 3 missiles and the Elon Musk has its complement of IC siege missiles.

Congratulations Synthorange, Arkanterian and LL6 on your new commands! I'm sure the smell will come out eventually.

Locations:

9th Crudiv is about 5 days from Waypoint 2 where it can turn for either Saturn or Uranus or continue on course for Neptune. From Waypoint 2 both Saturn/Uranus should be about a week away.

Intel estimates that waiting for the Victory will probably mean giving the IC a chance to reinforce but a few days for Naomi should be fine.

A strange message with no sender has appeared on your personal server. Supposedly the fleet operates a secure enviroment so something just appearing like this should be impossible. You open it and a famous figure from home appears on your screen, Senator Harris, head of the Freedom party. An ex-revolutionary and terrorist gone legit but also one of the most powerful men in Martian politics.

Senator Harris posted:

Greetings General.

My apologies for the unorthodox method of contacting you but unfortunately circumstances dictate discretion.

As you know I am a member of the Central planning committee, what you do not know however is that I am part of a faction of the Senate that has been committed to more aggressive action against the IC and their stranglehold on the Sorium trade for some time. The Fleet Archon is a compatriot of mine and has passed on the outline of your assault plan as well as her personal recommendation that you be brought aboard.

We have been waiting for an opportunity to exploit the systematic weakness of the IC structure, namely that they are more of an economic conglomerate than a political union and they lack anything resembling the patriotism and dedication to a common goal that typifies Mars. We have been culturing friendly contacts within the IC’s workers unions for a long time and believe that under the right circumstances a massive capital influx would allow them to purchase or acquire controlling share of at least one of the mega corporations that control the Sorium harvesting operations.

The financial structure is already largely prepared with enormous capital diversions coming from the Terraforming wealth fund and merely awaits the proper crisis to tumble company stock so our conspirators in the IC can seize their opportunity.

What we require from you is caution in carrying out your assault. Saturn’s fuel harvesting operations must give the appearance of being badly damaged or destroyed while actually remaining as intact as possible, chaos must be sown on the surface of the Titan to disrupt the controlling corporation's operations and finally the Saturnian system must be locked down as long as possible. The Archon has expressed her confidence in your military acumen so operational details are up to you.

Our informants in the workers unions have highlighted key administrative sites on Titan and one on Rhea that are attached to this message which require destruction or assault. I am aware that this request may increase the difficulty of your operations and cost Martian lives in the process but this war cannot last forever and this is our chance to install a very sympathetic figure to the IC board or even bring about the dissolution of the IC triumvirate.

Everything could be riding on this General, i'm sure you will make the correct decision.

Dust to Life General.

A look at the locations provided reveals primarily civillian administrative locations with the Titan stock exchange heading up the list. Orbital fire on these locations would no doubt result in enormous civillian casualties but ground attacks will be expensive in both men and materiel.

'Well isnt this quite something' he thinks as he places a call to his second in command, "Crazy" Cryo.
