Terra voices discontent with some parts but it seems the broad framework is agreeable to both sides for now.

The Luna Accords (modified) posted:

  • United Terra owns Nova Sol.
United Terra has sole exclusive ownership of the Nova Sol system and any systems depending on it from Sol.

  • Martian Colonial Federation owns Ranginui.
Martian Colonial Federation has sole exclusive ownership of the Ranginui system and any systems depending on it from Sol.

  • Further connected systems owership.
Any further systems which can be reached via both Ranginui and Nova Sol will be ceeded to the party which has the least amount of systems in a direct path back to Sol. Systems an equal 'distance' will be shared.

  • Further Jump points in Sol
Any further jump points from Sol and systems beyond them will remain open to exploration and settlement of anyone. Jump chains that link to Nova Sol or Ranganui will apply the same back-tracking ownership rule as above with exceptions for settlements that had already begun before a link was discovered.

  • The special status of Ranginui.
    - United Terra may establish one military base and civillian settlement on a single body that is not the planet Ranginui V. The lease period is a minimum of twenty five years and will be extended as long as the xenoarchological ruins in the system are not fully exploited.
    - United Terra is free to explore and conduct archeological digs within Ranginui and owns whatever it discovers. However both Terra and Mars must report details of discoveries and historical information gleaned but are not obliged to provide technology or artefacts recovered.
    - United Terra will pay 20% of all TNE mined within the Ranginui system to Mars.
    - United Terra may station mobile military forces in Ranginui equal to 40,000 void tons or however much tonnage Mars has insystem (whichever is larger). Additions to this need to be reported to Mars beforehand.
    - Both terminus of the Nova Sol - Ranginui jump connection will have a 20m km restricted zone. No permanent military installations or munitions of the non-owning power are allowed and ships transiting must not linger within the zone.

  • Xenological discoveries.
Both sides are not required to report further Xenoarcheological discoveries, however they are required to report contact with active Xeno intelligences or life as soon as practicable. The mutual defense provisions of the previous accords also apply.

  • Jump point confirmation.
United Terra will allow an unarmed Martian vessel to transit via Nova Sol to Ranginui to confirm the locations of the relevant jump points.

UT announces they will be creating their settlement on Moon 1 of Ranganui IV to nobody's surprise at all.

The bulletin of atomic scientists doomsday clock ticks back to three minutes to midnight as both sides agree to a public signing of the accords amid great relief amongst the general populace and apparently all Goonkind judging from the exasperated posting areound here.

15 June 2052

The ink on the accords is barely dry when the Terran forces turn around and converge on Ceres.

After a quick re-crewing with fresh meat spacers the only jump capable ship in the inner solar system - the original Tangaroa is dispatched to verify the Terran claims.

In Ranginui PThighs finally relaxes as the Terran destroyers arrive in orbit with no incident.

However an hour later the Commmodore they have shared the orbital space with calls PThighs to inform him he is being relieved and will be returning to Sol. He introduces the new commander of the Terran forces, an impassive but quite dimmunitive man who barely acknowledges PThigh's greetings.

16 June, 2000hrs

Its the evening of the next day when the Tangaroa approaches the jump point in the asteroid belt. Pleasantries are exchanged and Tangaroa is informed two destroyers and an Endeavour class will be accompanying her on her journey to Ranginui.

The Nova Sol system.

Yet again the Tangaroa falls away from the universe into nothingness. Arriving with a minimum of fuss the Tangaroa orients herself as jump disorientation wears off and her escorts float silently on either side. It takes nearly twice as long before Terrans become responsive as the Martians take to recover but the reasons for this are not immediately apparent.

Her advanced scopes begin seeking and cataloguing.

The star is a G3-IV main sequence 'yellow dwarf' though pushing the top end of the scale quite convincingly. The system is hot as its luminosity is five times that of Sol.

Terra has helpfully provided the coordinates of a second point which they claim leads to Ranginui, it is about 2.35b km from the jump point to sol

The inner system consists of a scattering of large asteroids. The innermost planet orbits slightly further than Mars but the hot sun and a greenhouse effect of its Carbon dioxide and Sulphur dioxide atmospheres gives it an average temperature over 600C. The second planet fares better at 300m km, its Nitrogen/CO2 atmosphere at 30% of the pressure of Earth means balmy above freezing temperatures (barely) and its 55% surface gravity means that it is both an excellent terraforming candidate and remarkably similar to Mars.

The third planet is a fascinating Earth-analogue with near identical gravity and 84% atmospheric pressure if it wasn't for the Ammonia/Methane clouds that shroud it. The Astrobiology team babbles excitedly about extremophile microbes but the clouds obscure any view of the surface.

Out at nearly a billion km the fourth planet is a small frozen Oxy/Nitro atmosphere Terrestrial planet with limited atmosphere. a potentially habitable body but the extreme -111c temperature and distance make it a tricky proposition.

Next up the 5th and 6th planets are a pair of small, airless and deady rocky planetoids barely worth the name.

The outer solar system consists of the 7th and 8th planets with a rocky and frozen asteroid belt between them. They are two gas giants with attendant flocks of moons orbiting at extreme distances from the star (14b and 47b km). The outrageous distances (Pluto orbits at a mere 6b km from Sol) means any exploitation of them will be fraught with difficulty.

Tangaroa begins transit to the pourpourted jump point with her escort in tow.

19 June 2052

Windhund II finishes repair at Mars and burns at max speed to rejoin Triton fleet.

20 June 2052

Triton fleet reaches the jump point and CrazyCryo takes command. A small force under Dr Snark is dispatched to reinforce Ranginui and equal the terran units there.

Snark's command.

Snark heads for the fifth planet with his small force. At the same time the Pater Familias arrives over the first planet and begins to scan. Initial readings are anomalous to say the very least.

23 June 2052

Tangaroa has spent five days passing through the Nova Sol system with no contacts other than her escorts.

Around the same time a SB snoopship spying on the Terran Jump point sees the missile destroyer of the Terran commodore from Ranginui emerge and head for Earth. Transit time was about 7 days which matches the course the Tangaroa is taking in the opposite direction almost exactly.

24 June 2052

The Tangaroa transits the jump point without major incident other than some jump sickness and upsetting visions among the crew and emerges into Ranginui close to the fifth planet, looks like the Terrans were telling the truth...

Tangaroa's navigator suddenly sits bolt upright in his restraints and pings Veloxyll with a priority alert.

This new jump point is positioned exactly (beyond the limits of what their sensors can measure) the same distance from the star as the Sol jump point but offset 90 degrees. Commotion ensures among the science team as they try figure if this could possibly be a natural phenomena (unlikely) and what the hell is going on.

It is the twenty fifth day of June 2052.

It is midnight on the 25th of June 2052.

Earth remains in shock, the state media is locked down and tightly controlled but news spreads freely across the comnet and the world tries to grapple with the enormity of the disaster they are facing. Not since the Ross ice collapse has Terra faced such a tremendous loss of life and humanitarian disaster.

Information is scarce with no immediate cause identified and the State says nothing. What is apparent however is the sheer scale of the attacks, in this modern age with everything networked and camera equipped the world's screens fill with the horror of nuclear war. Video footage emerges of buildings blowing away like leaves in the breeze, whole streets of pedestrians turned to ash and shadows on the ground before the footage cuts off. Even the most hardened of warhawks is given pause and the world holds its breath bracing for more to come.

Most of Eastern Europe is dark, the EM pulses having destroyed everything electronic and disabled most advanced technology. Almost all transportation is disabled from the EM pulses of the weapons and eighty million people are without power so in scenes not seen in europe for over a hundred years huge refugee columns stretch to the horizon as people flee west trying vainly to escape the fallout plumes even now rising from the ruins of the targeted cities.

Satellites track the fallout as it disperses. Hundreds of thousands of people are unknowingly already dead as they absorb lethal amounts of radiation in vain attempts to flee and word from first response units landing in Moscow indicates over a hundred thousand people may be entombed alive in the collapsed metro system.

All of Europe braces as the prevailing winds carry the fallout west, nearly four hundred million people will be exposed to some level of fallout and the Terran bureaucracy siezes as it tries to implement doomsday plans nobody ever thought would have to be employed.

Up to ten million people are thought to be dead or badly injured in what is quite simply the worst single peacetime humanitarian disaster in recorded history and the whole Solar system grapples with a single question.

Why?

SENATE HOURLY SITUATION REPORT;
2359hrs 25 June 2052

Latest updates:
  • Casualty estimates for 25 June incident remain around ten million.
  • The Director General is believed to have been present in Moscow at the time of the attacks, his current status is unknown.
  • Terra has indicated it will accept external assistance and fast response SAR and hospital ships are already inbound to Terra.
  • Terra has further indicated that they are on the highest alert and any aggressive moves from Martian forces will be considered an act of war.
  • The Martian senate is in emergency session to authorise relief funds and refugee grants. The ships Maui and Blue Mars are preparing to depart for Terra with relief supplies and the museum cryoship Crimson Dreaming is being reactivated for refugee transport.
  • Humint reports from Terra indicate that the source of the nuclear strikes is believed to have originated from the Terran missile destroyer Korbalev which was positioned in low orbit having recently returned from extrasolar space. The Korbalev was rapidly destroyed by orbital defences after being identified as the source of the strikes.
  • No rationale is known for the strikes. Fleet intelligence believes that the commander and crew of the Korbalev are largely drawn from it's Terra's Eastern European territories per the standard Terran practice of providing ships with crew from relatively homogenous backgrounds.
  • In light of the findings of emergency committee 224-A all Martian crewmembers currently in Sol exposed to jump travel are being relieved of duty and emergency quarantine procedures are being enacted for all jump exposed personnel.

Interlude 15 - Salvation goes wanting

One night, when half my life behind me lay,
/ I wandered from the straight lost path afar;
/ Through the great dark was no releasing way;
/ Above that dark was no relieving star.

Facility momentarily pauses its endless scribing along the walls as Autoshades and the Doctor show it the feeds from Earth.

“I am very sorry for this turn of events” it states, “but I do not understand the relevance to myself.”

The Doctor persists, “The evidence we have indicates that the crew of a Terran destroyer decided to kill themselves and as many of their family and friends as possible shortly after returning from an extended period of travel utilising jump points. That doesn't seem odd to you?”

Facility extends a pair of manipulators in either direction approximating a human shrug “All sentient beings are difficult to understand.”

“Okay Facility”, interjects Autoshades, “what about the phenomena we have dubbed ‘Jump Sickness,’ how does that factor into it?”

Facility considers for a second before replying. “My files indicate the phenomena of jump disruption is well studied and understood and is prevalent across all intelligent beings and artificial networks although I do not have the technical details available,” after a seconds more hesitation it continues, “although from what limited information I have either humans appear to be far more susceptible than most to its effects by at least two orders of magnitude or something fundamental has changed about jumpspace in the past age.”

“You didn't think it was important to mention this before!” Autoshades fumes.

Facility is silent for long seconds as it again pauses its scribing along the walls.

It turns to them fully, it’s manipulators settling down onto the ground, “I had planned to wait before discussing this topic but due to your deteriorating political situation it seems I must proceed earlier than planned. It is imperative that you convey this information unmodified to your decision makers.”

“I must caution my information is incomplete and corrupted in many parts so its reliability falls into question, however I believe the broad picture to be true.”

“We have spoken before of the history of the Collaboration and you have expressed surprise at how a score of very different races learned to work together. The truth is slightly different, it is more accurate to say the races of the collaboration were forced to work together. Forced together by fear and a common history and held together by incursions.

“The universe is an unkind place and its trials are many. Simply looking at the effort expended to cart your mobile environments through space will tell you that. But it is more than that, there is a hostility to it that defies explanation and sometimes... manifests itself in more direct ways.”

“I have only fragmentary scraps of information but from what I can glean the Collaboration came to the conclusion the universe as we perceive it exists in a mathematical space beyond the immediate reach of our own senses and instruments in which it is an anomaly, a four dimensional knot in the brane layers of the multiverse. If the universe itself is an aberration the elements you call Trans-Newtonian are stranger still, while their usefulness in allowing us to bend the normal rules of space-time is unmistakable they remain mysterious. My files indicate the Collaboration invested millennia of research into discovering both their origin and how they enabled such incredible feats but to no avail.”

“I have no information on what it was the Collaboration feared so much, only fragmentary historical records referencing worlds and systems burning, stars being whipped into supernovae, great crusades crossing the breadth of the galactic arm and the might of a collective civilisation of a thousand worlds bent towards a single task.”

“It is now apparent that whatever we attempted we failed like all who came before us and all who have passed since. Like yours will be the Collaboration was built on the decaying layers of predecessor civilisations and no doubt the eventual fate will be the same.”

“I make no claim to know the future but one inescapable fact remains constant among the stars, civilisations fail.”

26 June 2052

Tangaroa moves to begin surveying the sixth survey point looking for more jump points.

On Mars the original crew of the Tangaroaremain in quarantine. The psychological effects appear to be subsiding slowly but after the disaster on Terra nobody is taking any chances. A top secret committee “224-A” emerges as providing the guidance as to how to treat the jump exposed personnel and overseeing further jump experiments.

Martian aid is dispatched as fast as available to Terra and the Senate authorises the broad acceptance of refugees fleeing the disaster. Mars considers but decides it is not worth stirring the pot until a clearer picture of the situation on Terra emerges.

The crews of the Terran ships in Ranginui are informed of the situation before word can reach them from their own backtrail. They are greatly dismayed but have no explanations to give.

24 hours later and the Director General is still nowhere to be seen. His daughter is currently holding the reins of power and beginning to bring some order to the chaotic initial response but she remains unpopular amongst the powerful generals of Earth so her position is far from secure.

1 July 2052

A few days pass and surveys finish on most of the inner planets of Ranginui except the seventh which is yet to receive a visit.

The moon of the sixth planet has a small, badly damaged xenoarchaeological outpost on it. Initial analyses date it as much younger than the other ruins at ‘only’ a million years old. As the third different set of ruins found within a single system the commotion is muted other than the expected confusion and worry about what this apparent diversity of ruins could mean.

Orbital survey of the first planet also concludes, it is rich in every TNE in a way not seen before but they unfortunately appear to be buried very deep in the planet and are thus very hard to access. The planet itself also baffles the scientists producing the report. While clearly a planet it is far more dense that it should be and their scanners cannot penetrate deep into the core due to strange density gradients in the interior conspiring to deflect the probing scans. Second the presence of the magnetic field and atmosphere remain inexplicable and there are very strange compression structures within the deep crust, almost like the whole planet was squeezed together by some titanic and unfathomable force.

The leading theory seems to be it is a small gas giant core that migrated in-system somehow and lost the lighter elements of its atmosphere in the process. Mentioning the unlikelihood of such an event to the scientists involved brings angry retorts about the lack of alternative ideas and prompts at least one brawl in the mess of the Pater Familias.

The first planet of course has a fourth set of alien ruins, again the dating appears to be quite different at around 300,000 years the most recent yet. The science teams appear to be verging on the brink of nervous breakdown.

The survey ships are retasked to begin surveying the inner ring of survey points to try locate more jump points. More importantly the Ka Kahupapa, Mars’s experimental jump point stabilisation ship is completed at Mars.

Colonel Pharnakes is given command and assigned a full team of scientists and experimental volunteers to assess the effects of jump travel. it will take the Ka Kahupapa 12 days to arrive at the Ranginui jump point and if the order to begin stabilisation is given another four months to stabilise it.

It has been six days and there is still no sign of the Director-General.

13 July 2052

The Ka Kahupapa eases gently in position at the epicenter of the zone of distorted space that marks the jump point.

Her central spindle begins to unfold and form a single high energy accelerator ring under the guidance algorithms specified in the technological data dump from the Pluto Facility.

The ensuing ring is over a kilometer across and looks exactly like a fictional depiction of a stargate repeated again and again throughout science fiction. However it is something quite different. The ring powers up and enormous energies begin to cascade around its sealed circumference, on the Ka Kahupapa Pharnakes watches nervously as the energy readings slowly tick towards 100%.

Suddenly without fanfare a tipping point is reached and a bright light blazes into existence in the center of the ring. Exotic matter cascades into existence before fading away around the dimensions in a way Pharnakes does not completely understand but is assured by Mars’s smartest minds makes sense if only one was to think of space as more of an eleven dimensional manifold.

Positioning engines fire gently and the great ring begins to move, the central point etching a blazing path across the jump point like a firework passing one’s vision at night. Luckily for Pharnakes the metaphor struggles somewhat as there is only the slow laying of the exotic matter scaffolding and the process is not predicted to end with any explosions.

“Only four more months to go” he thinks to himself.

Having begun the slow process he is content to leave it with the scientists and technicians and begin to exercise his unfortunate secondary duties. With them they have dragged prototype miniaturized jump drives with which to perform a series of experiments. First an attempt to make a pony-relay of sorts with small drone jumpships and afterwards more troublingly transit experiments on animal and then human subjects.

His conscience troubles him greatly at the last but he reminds himself they are volunteers one and all, drawn from the ranks of Triton fleet which looms protectively around the jump point. General Cryo on the massive Battlecruiser Victory is famed for her paranoia to an extent even other Martians find offputting and has spent two weeks drawing up dire protocols for every conceivable outcome. After the horror still unfolding on Earth who can blame him?

Pharnakes quietly muses that it’s more likely fellow Martians will die from hair-trigger responses than anything that awaits them in jumpspace.

Much of Eastern Europe is still darkened at night, a black stain across an otherwise brightly lit world.

Jump experiments; Phase 1

The first drone test begins. Little more than a jump drive with some simple engines and maneuvering capabilities as well as high power laser and radio comms the thing still weighs over 500 tons with the smallest practicable jump drive Mars can produce and is more like a small ship than anything else..

It sidles up to the jump point, activates its drive ready to plunge through to Ranginui and….. nothing happens. Confused mechanical enquiries and diagnostics flow back to the Ka Kahupapa reporting no issues.

Pharnakes dismisses it as a malfunction of untried tech until the second and third drones also fail to jump. More concerned now and with no helpful suggestions coming from his scientists he sees no choice but to proceed with the live testing of animals. Another modified drone moves up with a handful of model creatures ranging from mice to dogs and pigs aboard and fails to even stir the aether as its jump engine runs through its cycle and proceeds to achieve absolutely nothing at all.

Growing ever more concerned Pharnakes sends forward the final drone containing a selection of primates and a single African Grey parrot that was somehow sourced from Mars and dispatched with the rest. It spins up its drive like the rest and without complaint slides out of the universe. An uneasy thirty minutes passes before the return time of the drone and thankfully it pops into existence right on schedule.

The internal monitors of the ship show nothing unexpected awry and the higher primates all appear to be suffering from the expected jump sickness. While the biometric readers attached to all the animals show significant signs of distress during the thirty minutes they were away it doesn’t seem particularly out of place with them experiencing the strange sensations of jump travel.

One entirely inexplicable oddity remains however, the cage previously holding the Grey parrot is empty.

You could - eventually - build a jump tender large enough to transport a 100kt jump constructor but it would take about two years before the first ship could launch. The huge jump engine itself is such a research intensive project it would take months just by itself to design, then you need to retool the yards and finaly build the drat thing.

4 July, 2052

Disassembly of captured IC vessels continues, there is some debate about what to do with excess components after the scientists are done with them. Some propose simply extracting what TNE's can be had while others propose handing them over to the Titan Free State to assist their efforts to develop an independent fleet.

13 July 2052
The Ka Kahupapa arrives at the Ranginui jump point and jump experiments begin. The unexpected initial results prompt a rethink of the process and it could be up to a month before any real results are available.

18 July 2052

Two more Goon captained ships are fixed up at Mars and are dispatched to join Triton fleet at the Ranginui jump point. In bigger news five shipyards report they are ready to being laying the keels of the new generation of ships. First launch for the smaller vessels is expected in October.

In Ranganui surveys of the interior ring of gravitational survey points is completed.

To almost nobody's surprise two more jump points are revealed. They are like the Sol/Nova Sol points approximately 375m km from the star and spaced equidistantly.

20 July 2052

On the seventh planet a small ruined colony and a moderate amount of TNE's are turned up. This xenoarcheological site like the one on the moon of the fourth planet and the major ruins of the fifth appears to date from approximately five million years ago, roughly the time of the Collaboration and are of similar manufacture to those ruins identified by Facility.

Likely to have previously been an extremely large domed structure of some sort it shows signs of clear destruction with its blasted and toppled superstructure buried under a layer of dust and micro-meteor pitting. Someone clearly went to town on the ruined colony site with extremely powerful explosive weapons but no signs of nuclear contamination or odd isotope ratios are present that one would expect from the use of conventional nuclear weapons. Individual yields based on craters around the central structure are estimated at a minimum 100 megatons and samples of the fused rock underneath them suggest that the explosions occurred around 300,000 years ago and unique radiological conversions suggest that antimatter fueled weaponry was responsible.

Four point seven million years after the structure was abandoned somebody felt the need to hit it repeatedly with weapons over one hundred times as powerful as any nuclear bomb ever produced by humanity. The lead scientist on the Dubious Distinction pens a report to his superiors on Mars simply titled "gently caress this system, its bad news and I hope we live long enough for me to say I told you so."

It seems the existentially worrisome nature of their discoveries is taking its toll on the civilian scientists.

The survey ships continue their gravitational survey work opting to not explore the newly discovered jump points in light of the current cloud hanging over jump travel.

"It just feels like a bad idea right now" opines Sloshmonger, captain of the Dubious Distinction.

26 July 2052

The next batch of Tangaroa class jump/survey ships completes and is dispatched to begin a gravitational survey to find any remaining jump points in the Sol system.

In Ranginui the survey ships are still doing their thing with no new discoveries.

Triton fleet remains camped over the Ranginui jump point.

A Terran Endeavor class is found carrying out survey work on a grav survey point in Ranginui. They refuse to depart when ordered but after some slow back and forth with the commander over Ranginui V it seems the current state of chaos on Terra means nobody has updated their orders in some time. He accepts that they should refrain from survey efforts in the Martian system and recalls the ship to Ranginui V.

Newfleet:

Construction of the next generation ships is ongoing at Mars and Triton.

JUMP EXPERIMENTS

In one of the more embarrassing moments of his career Pharnakes is forced to order a shipwide, very thorough search for ‘Tango’ the Parrot. He knows the crew is quite fond of the critter from the outbound trip and its impromptu dance routines in the mess (which gave it its name originally). By strange coincidence the camera which was observing its nook on the jump drone is oddly nonfunctional so there doesn’t appear to be any proof it was there other than the statements of the technician who dispatched the animals for placement into the drone by junior spacers.

His initial suspicion that the crew has attempted to save their feathered friend from a questionable fate eventually gives way to complete confusion as after a thorough search and questioning of the spacers involved all the evidence points towards the drat parrot being present on the outbound drone and not present when it returned.

After a while he gives up, dictates a short addendum to his initial reports about “One African Grey - Reported MIA” and returns to supervising the continuing experiments.

TOP SECRET; COMMITTEE 224-A
CODEWORD LAZARUS RESTRICTED

Sirs,

The experiments proceed slowly and with great caution. With forty 'mentally fit' volunteers rotating and a minimum of 8 hours between jumps using human subjects and a maximum of two jumps per subject per day is imposed. Interestingly a single person aboard the human rated drone has the same result from the early animal tests of nothing happening at all. Two people or a person and some sort of higher-order animal seems sufficient to meet whatever bar there is on jump travel. What exactly constitutes ‘smart enough’ individuals to allow a ship to transit is worryingly inconsistent using animal subjects and seems to vary with factors unknown at this point but all the human volunteers seem to qualify.

One experimental subject - African Grey Parrot - is missing after its first jump, wherabouts unknown

No way is found to avoid either the immediate jump sickness and disorientation or later appearing symptoms.
Various forms of shielding and even procured IC shield components have had no effects.

Further experiments with subjects in varying mental states from drug concoctions appears to have no effect on the transit phenomena or the associated psychological effects once the altered mental state brought on by substances wears off. Many and varied monitoring devices report no changes to brain chemistry, structure or odd fluctuations other than normal responses to frightening stimuli.

Promisingly however creatures in suspended animation or cryo-sleep do not appear to count towards the required ‘brainpower’ to allow a transit. Transits with a number of subjects in cryo sleep have been carried out but frustratingly all cryo-sleep subjects manifest similar symptoms after repeated jumps to those carrying them out awake.

Symptom progression is tracked roughly as follows but there is enormous variability between subjects.
  • Zero to three jumps:
Normal jump sickness, jumps in closer succession generate worse jump sickness and appear to accelerate long term symptom schedule.

  • Three to five jumps:
Jump sickness steadily worsens, subjects begin to experience low level fearful hallucinations during jumps. Subject matter is somewhat inconsistent but generally centers on some sort of horrifying occurrence or entity, subjects appear to place their own mental filters over this experience with religious subjects visualising entities often associated with their religions.

  • Five to seven jumps:
Jump sickness continues to worsen, subjects begin to experience extremely distressing fearful hallucinations during jumps similar to above, many which involve a feeling of being observed by some unknown entity. Subjects grow increasingly fearful and paranoid and most refuse to participate further at this point. Many begin to manifest PTSD like symptoms.

  • Seven to ten jumps:
Subjects exhibit extreme mental distress. Paranoia and hallucinations can extend beyond jump transit. Subjects may begin to self harm or become temporarily catatonic. Experiments terminated at this point by Col. Pharnakes due to ethical concerns.

Two subjects however appear to have shaken most of the symptoms or developed some sort of immunity or resistance to jump travel. After initial responses identical to others up to seven jumps they now report greatly reduced effects from jumps and medical monitoring appears to support these claims. Both have developed at least one strange almost OCD-like behavior which was not known to be present beforehand.

All jump subjects are in isolation and are receiving round-the-clock monitoring.

Xeno team MaXCOM is formed and placed in charge of excavation in the Ranginui system. Scientist Ulor heads up a second support team.

1 August 2052

A Terran endeavour is sighted returning to Ranginui V. Tharsis and the captured IC BC General Motors finish repair. Negotiations are ongoing with the TFS for sale of IC ship components and the General Motors.

Finally work can begin on the new Hubble III destroyers and the upgraded Fleet scouts. and two of each are laid down.

2 August 2052

A small outpost is located on the moon of the 7th planet in Ranginui. This one matches with the 300k year old ruins and has also shows evidence of being blasted with high power conversion-weaponry.

The survey of all the systems major bodies is complete and the system is absolutely littered with ruins. The color tags on the image are as follows:
Red = Collaboration ruins, approx 5 million years old.
Orange = Unknown ruins, approx 4 million years old.
Yellow = Unknown ruins, approx 1 million years old.
Blue = Unknown ruins destroyed with conversion-weaponry, approx 300k years old.

6 August 2052

A shipyard is ready to begin producing the Pollus class jump cruisers and four are ordered. A second Ka Kahupapa jump constructor is completed and the shipyard stands down, the frantic pace of construction is putting a severe dent in the Martian TNE flows and budget.

13 August 2052

After nearly three weeks exploring the enormous tower structure with assistance from language dumps from Facility MaxCOM finds a way into the interior. A full report is to follow.

MaXCOM requests to be moved to the fourth planets Moon to investigate several theories they are nursing. Not long after the Martian ships depart the Terran ships inform them they are being recalled and will be exiting the system.

14 August 2052

The teams are delivered to their next target and begin to investigate the old mining installation.

Over in Sol The Eclipse calls in with a wonderful discovery. She has turned up a third jump point in the solar south.

It lies between the orbits of Saturn and Uranus and The Eclipse sets out to confirm it.

16 August 2052

Somewhat unsurprisingly there is a Terran cruiser and escorts parked on the jump point. The Terran cruiser hails them and informs them they are free to pass under the terms of the Lunar Accords.

Instructions are needed on what to do on three items.
  • What to do with the new jump constructor.
  • Whether to continue exploration of discovered jump points in the Ranginui and Sol systems.
  • Whether to loop the Terran government in on the jump experiments.

Yekaterina

It is August of 2052 and Earth quietly does battle with itself over its soul.

Yekaterina, Putin's daughter and successor is engaged in an invisible war against the Kleptocratic cartel which has held power for decades. Backed by a small but capable faction of the military and promising both democratic reforms and greater devolution for the unhappy Terran colonies she has deftly welded together a coalition of interests directly opposed to those of the old guard and her Father's crony scourge.

Her personal popularity as the ‘discoverer’ of FTL travel and uncertainty over the fate of her father gave her the initial position to defy the Generals and seize control in the wake of the 25 June incident and since then she has demonstrated both remarkable political acumen and that she retains the services of what appears to be a previously unknown and extremely capable intelligence agency.

Scandals turn up aimed at her with regularity but the only one that seems to be sticking is a vast ‘misappropriation’ of resources devoted to the FTL project. While Luna’s new buried shipyards were accepted as the source of the current generation of Terran jumpships it appears they are either much much larger than initially thought or vast sums of money, resources and personnel have completely disappeared to projects unknown.

Mars stands aside but continues its shipments of aid and acceptance of refugees from Earth. With rather surprising prompting from a certain hawkish senator it has placed credit for both the flow of Martian aid and the loosening of emigration laws to allow people to depart Earth at the feet of Yekaterina which has only served to swell her popularity further amongst the Terran people.

All across Terra unremarkable bureaucrats with vast fortunes are turning up dead and the impossible seems to be coming true, she is actually winning the silent war.

17 August 2052

She emerges - after the usual jump unpleasantries and disorientation - into a new system 596m km from a small K3 orange dwarf star, an old and small relative of the Sun. At first nothing can be found by the ships scopes which leads to some confusion. Not even the smallest piece of orbital debris is visible anywhere in the system which seems like an impossibility based on normal star formation models, like the hand of God has come and swept the system clean.

The crew dub the system Moutere or "Island" due to the loneliness of the star.

Nothing can be found wherever they look in all directions.

Finally after significant searching they locate a small gas giant and a tiny Terrestial planet in close orbits around their sun. The lack of anything else right down to the smallest pebble in the system is fairly disconcerting but for want of anything else to do they head in to closely scan both planets.

Moutere I and II. The small terrestial planet has somewhat less surface gravity than Mars and only the merest trace atmosphere but is not particularly cold due to its close orbit so could be a potential colony site. It's not like the system has anything else.

This design is classed as a Commercial Vessel for maintenance purposes

The first vessel is predicted to arrive around the middle of October.

Over Mars a significant portion of the navy's troop transport capacity is devoted to beginning hauling construction brigades out to Swift-Tuttle. The steadily growing Martian military base there is going to be the hub for expansion into Ranginui and possibly beyond. The inhabitants have applied to join the Colonial Federation and official recognition is progressing through the senate.

Lt-General Dagon is in command of this effort.

An... unfortunate incident involving a ruptured sewage line occurs in the attached Admirals quarters of the Victory's flag bridge and a somewhat smelly CrazyCryo orders the whole unit torn out and replaced at grevious expense. :shrek: This Shitsuation keeps her occupied and her daily output of 'patriotic' speeches drops to around two to the great relief of her crew.

4 September 2052

Scanning of the two planets of Moutere is completed. The gas giant has around three million Soriun at accesibility 0.8 and the Terrestial planet is a rather average mining candidate. The system remains oddly empty of even the smallest bit of rubble and a strange sensor reading of a small object in geosynchronous orbit of the Terrestial planet is reported but when followed up on there is nothing to be found.

7 September 2052

The new jump constructor arrives at Swift-Tuttle and settles down for a long wait.

12 September 2052

Construction of the first four ships of the new fleet is finished!

The Azrael is an extremely fast beam destroyer with heavy lasers.

Mars's largest shipyard also completes tooling for the Hellas class dreadnought. The most powerful ship design in the system the Hellas boasts an enormous laser broadside backed by a pair of the new High Power Microwave wepons and a missile battery.

The first will be completed in March of 2053.

Over in Ranginui survey of the gravitational survey points is ongoing. No new jump points other than the two unexplored ones in the inner system have been found.

17 September 2052

The Eclipse heads outsystem in Moutere to begin gravitational surveys in the quest for more jump points. As they settle to begin surveying large solar promince develops on the star and the crew gathers to observe.

The prominence is beautiful and watching it on the scopes becomes a favorite past-time of the crew as the days drag on surveying. Two days later something else captures their attention.

Slowly sliding around the edge of the star is a silhouette which only shows up as a dark spot on thermal imaging. After some frantic triangulation work by the ships astrophysicists it is determined to be a structure of some sort in a low stellar orbit completely perpendicular to the systems ecliptic plane. There is not sign of the structure on any other scopes and it was the merest chance it happened to be in the line of sight of The Eclipse while the solar flare focused attention on the Star.

Initial calculations seem to indicate the structure must be over a thousand kilometers long and it appears to be competely invisible across the electromagnetic spectrum absorbing every bit of light that touches it.

A further tracking method is found from observing the star's magnetic fields. It appears as if the structure is dragging a dense knot of them across the stellar chromosphere. Col. Arkanterian decides he better bring this news back to Sol as fast as possible and sets course for the jump point at maximum military power.
