Not sure if this is the right thread for this but LBRY https://lbry.io/ seems like a good decentralized media platform using blockchain tech. I can't imagine why it won't get super popular but that is why I am posting. Opinions?
Here was my encounter with lbry:
---
so i saw this press release/news story and the explanation of "what the gently caress is LBRY" at the end is...

quote:

The Perfect Content for LBRY
While other archive teams have also backed up these lectures using traditional methods, publishing them to LBRY offers greater openness, usability, and robustness.

LBRY is the first truly free and censorship-resistant way to exchange content. The LBRY protocol provides a completely decentralized network for discovering, distributing, and publishing all types of content and information, from books to movies.

When publishing the lectures to LBRY, the content metadata is written to a public blockchain, making it permanently public and robust to interference. Then, the content data itself is hosted via a peer-to-peer data network that offers economic incentives to ensure the data remains viable. This is superior to centralized or manual hosting, which is vulnerable to technical failure or other forms of attrition.
this sounds like a great way to end up accidentally involved in the distribution of child pornography.

quote:

How do I get LBRY credits?
Currently, there are five ways to obtain LBRY Credits, or LBC for short.

Beta testers get an LBC gift. Talk to us on Slack if you're interested.
Buy them: see Exchanges
Mine them: see Mining.
Host content: see Hosting for details. Note that hosting requires the LBRY app, which is currently open to beta testers only.
Publish content: when you publish your own content to the LBRY network, you can sell it for LBC at the price of your choice.
this is for commercial copyright infringement and distribution of child pornography.

Though why you'd have long-term Bitcoin not in a private wallet I don't understand. It's so easy and then you don't have to worry about a high profile target exchange being hacked or shutting down or stealing everything.

If you do a lot with your Bitcoin I can see keeping some in an online wallet for convenience, but just leaving it all there has always seemed like a silly decision.
In addition to what QuarkJets said, bitcoins in private wallets could also be lost through user error. A hard drive fails or is stolen. Their wallet requires a password for security reasons and they don't use it for so long that they forget it. A bunch of people lost all their BTC because they downloaded a pirated version of Fallout 4 that contained a virus that stole their private keys.

Also, anyone running back to Nicehash should read their payment schedule veeeery carefully: they're only paying out to external wallets at 0.1 BTC right now: https://www.nicehash.com/help/when-and-how-do-you-get-paid

In true bitcoin fashion, this is of course buried at the bottom and was 100% not mentioned at all anywhere in their re-launch messaging, because lol at setting the minimum payout to like $1500 (or $1200 or $1600 or...)
Hahahaha, they've definitely converted it to a Ponzi scheme. They have no money and are counting on most people not hitting the 0.1 btc payout for a few months. They'll probably pay out to a couple people to convince everyone they're legit but eventually they're running off with everyone's money.

The "Large Bitcoin Collider" (LBC - a homage to LHC) is a distributed effort to find at least one collision of private Bitcoin keys by creating addresses to private keys in a continuous 2160 range.
