Early 3D, except for some high water marks like maybe mario 64, some of the lucasarts titles, and some other poo poo im not gonna think too hard about it, is all really bad and not very playable these days. Gamecube/ps2 era is pushing it and a lot of those have really bad controls

2d cartoony games always age better. If you have to go 3d make it cartoony and as low poly as you can get away with. That's it right there, the key to your 90s game aging well. You are welcome. Seriously, Curse of Monkey Island turns 20 this year and is still gorgeous. Deus Ex, otoh...

phasmid posted:The consensus appears to be that consoles were always poo poo and the PC has never had a serious contender. PC's weren't as ubiquitous in the average household as they are today during the early console (ATARI - NES - Genesis) era. The internet was also growing its roots during that time, so the development of online gaming was still in it's early early stages. Most of your "good" games then were developed for the consoles. The PC today is just so much more powerful when compared to consoles that they can't compete on a technical level. Not to say there isn't plenty of reasons why someone might go for a console (cost, exclusives, etc.,) Plus if you want to mod your Skyrim to an explicitly graphic interactive porn game, PC is the place to be.

PC was bigger dogshit than consoles in the 80s. The only thing you could say for it is that there are some interesting experimental games from the 80s, like elite and whatnot, are not fun games to play anymore. They're just interesting. Until computer hardware began to standardize with ibm and intel you had a lot of expensive toy consumer hardware that didn't perform as well as consoles so you generally got inferior ports of console games and parents weren't letting a kid monopolize a PC for gaming anyway. Why develop for a C64 or zx spectrum in the uk when you could shovel bullshit out for the atari or deal with the nightmare of being licensed by nintendo, or sega, or w/e? That's where the money was. PC gaming didn't get good until like 1990 or 1991, when hardware and software finally began to seriously standardize and programmers were able to take advantage of more advanced hardware that could actually do interesting AND fun things.

Remember the 32X Sega upgrade? I had a next door neighbor who owned one when I lived in NW DC in the mid 90's. Fridays, he'd go get a case of Schlitz and invite me over. We'd play Freddy Couples 36 Great Holes. Once in a while I'd hear a gun shot outside or a mag dump and he was this accountant that worked for the GSA and he'd just crank up the volume and say poo poo like "the birds, they sound beautiful" and then slam another can down and crush it against his gut. https://youtu.be/uD7LBawRoO8?t=9m15s

Who What Now posted:Skyrim still only has like four VAs total so apparently Patrick worked for scale. And Jim Cummings is one of the Skyrim and Elder Scrolls Online VAs so everywhere you go it's "oh hey, it's that one guy from all those 90s cartoons" and it's always the same voice despite his decent range of voices in other things. Mr Underhill posted:Never played it on PSX but was looking up Grandia I today, still looks dope af. Wish there was a way to play it on PS4, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. A lot of PS2 and late PS1 JRPGs with simple 3D anime graphics still look ok today because they stuck to an art style that worked instead of trying for bleeding edge realism.

I tried to play GTA San Andreas for the first time and oh my god the controls are absolute poo poo. I got stuck on like the 3rd mission because I had to drive some guy but the controls were so bad I kept crashing the car. So I quit. 3 and Vice City were even worse. I love GTA 4 but gently caress spawing at your house/hospital, having to drive to the mission start, and then all the gently caress across the city to the actual action part of the mission.

Perfect Dark was funny as hell to play sometimes though because it had that wide variety of AI types. Me and my buddy used to do custom matches with me and him on a team and the other team entirely full of bots. The AI types were funny as gently caress. You had the KazeSim who'd just charge right at you shooting rockets and poo poo with no regard for its own safety. The FistSim would run up and beat the piss out of you with the disarm melee and steal your loving gun and leave your screen so blurry it made your eyes water. Plus when somebody killed the FistSim it was like a pinata of guns because of how many other bots he'd done that to. Then you had the VengeSim who would murder whoever the hell last killed him. It didn't matter if he was on your team, it would hunt you the gently caress down until some other poor fucker killed him. There was one that ran fast as gently caress too. God I'll never forget all the times I hollered "poo poo!" when I saw the message that said I'd killed the VengeSim. That fucker never stopped coming, ever.

a bone to pick posted:Bots have died in gaming and idk why, I remember some similar stories during the half-life / Unreal tournament days. Yeah, Perfect Dark did it right by having insane AI types, too. gently caress now I really wanna play it again. Like bots in general are kinda boring, so I get them not being common. But when you can select a varied cast of lunatic bots that behave in loving insane ways it's funny as hell. God I remember frantically trying to shoot the FistSim before he could get close and slap the piss outta me and run off with the gun I was holding and leaving my screen painfully blurry. God help you if he caught you in one of the crouched-down vent spots where you couldn't backpeddle fast to shoot the gently caress outta him. The worst was realizing you had killed the VengeSim and then getting the piss slapped outta you by the FistSim. You were basically hosed with a blurry rear end screen and an angry VengeSim looking to murder you.

Since a lot of the big companies are beholden to even bigger companies, I assumed phasing out bots was basically a signal "hey, if you want to play free-for-all, you gotta join psn/live/whatever!" Basically just a way to get people to sign up for high quality online gaming, paving the way for charging money for all online play. Basically just waiting for the people dumb/lazy enough to not know you can have things for free to come of age and extort the hell out of em.
