Ok, I appreciate the answers.
I'm at Galaxycon with one of my kids, and I guess I've lived in a bubble for a while, because this is the first time I've seen a large gathering of furries.

it's maybe less "because sex stuff" and more "often as a means of sexual expression, in a clearly signaled community"

Hm, a two hour movie with Andre Braugher, Denzel Washington, and Morgan Freeman or a 4.5 hour movie starring I don't even care I'm going to just read a book instead.

Yeah Glory is by far the winner. I think the only three good Civil War movies are Glory (top by far, and great across the board), Gone With the Wind (mostly for it's role in cinema history, despite romanticizing the south), and Lincoln (only for Daniel Day Lewis and Tommy Lee Jones, because the Spielberg Schmaltz is super cloying).

I inherited a DVD of Gone with the wind from my Grandfather. I put the wrong side on first and thus enjoyed a dramatic, punchy film that started with a gripping cold opening panning across a sea of wounded soldiers.

We've gotten several ahistorical or barely historical films about the fun involved in massacring Nazis. I want my Reb-stomping Civil War action movies. And no, Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter does not count.

This is my favourite letter to the editor. It's from early in the Land wars (1863) in NZ when the English were panicking since most of the army was a hemisphere away. The idea of attempting to move through subtropical rainforest with a 9 foot pike is beyond ludicrous to me. Or the idea that the Maori would come out to play with such a formation.

I mean, the TLDR version is all you really need. just goes to show that 'helpful' suggestions from know-it-alls aren't a new thing. Lad genuinely thinks a book he read on the 1798 rising in Ireland is going to help win a war that couldn't be more different.

In which the book specifically (The Killer Angels) was sooooooooooooo much better than the movie.

I've also been watching a bunch of Equalizer clips of Denzel and am now realizing he was 68 when he shot Equalizer 3.

I think he said he's doing Black Panther 3, King Lear and then Othello and retiring and may he live to be 120.

I can't raw-dog reality anymore. I can't try to be mostly sober while stupid people drunk on ideology play fast and loose with planet-ending violence machines. MAD assumes both parties understand MAD. MAD assumes both parties are rational, or at least very strongly prefer not to find out how serious the other side is about nuclear retaliation.

I don't have faith the US government is rational anymore and it scares the everloving gently caress out of me.

In honor of St Patrick's day I'm drinking NA Guinness and also getting high as balls.

First thought of the night: We all mocked George Lucas for opening the long-awaited new Star Wars movies with some bullshit about negotiating commerce with an evil Trade Federation. But that movie was released months before the Battle of Seattle. Before that event, the IMF and WTO were barely known outside leftist and conspiracy circles. So either that's a hell of a coincidence or Lucas was plugged into some unexpected poo poo.

I was thinking about Soviet and Empire satires of Russian bureaucracy. Then I got to thinking about English or American satires like the Infocom game “Bureaucracy”, and how we haven’t had a good one in decades. We lost. We think that spending half our time filling out forms is just normal and natural like norovirus. Just gotta live with it. Used to laugh at the stupidity of the bureaucrats but now we feel like the stupid ones because we get run around a million different things and ways and go back to the end of the line you were supposed to fill out 1173/B not 1137/B. The suits won.
