Edmund's (and Tyler Glaiel) newest release, The End is Nigh, is available on Steam for purchase!
This follows a bit in Meat Boy's footsteps, but with a more classic adventure platforming sort of feel. You play as Ash, some sort of gooey post-apocalyptic recluse, who finally has to leave his desecrated apartment to construct a "friend" from scratch using "tumors" you find scattered about. Classic Edmund!

Watch me descend multiple levels of insanity trying to complete as much of this game as I can handle. It's not particularly long from what I've seen, but trying to be a completionist will take its toll if I go down that dark road. Consider this more of a "let's look at" or a blatant advertisement than an informational playthrough, as is the tendency with blind gameplay!

I may have Platinum God'd Isaac, but this is going to be a wholly different experience!

-Cartridges:

Moving onwards through the next area. This time I actually manage to find a decent amount of collectibles! The most fun part of this is watching the death counter increment each time we see the main menu.

For once I actually grab every (regular) tumor in the area on my first go. We come across an interesting crossroads here that probably determines the course of the game—who wouldn't take the road less traveled?

Taking the rightmost path of the Split, we explore Retrograde, a place with an interesting aesthetic and lots of, uh, "environmental hazards".

Without any further delay, here's one apparent endpoint of the game; The Machine. A uniquely extra-long and non-linear area, this was a blast to explore!

This game looks nuts, and really sadomasochistic/depressing. Pretty much like all of Edmunds games now that I think of it.

None of my recording sessions have been more than an hour... yet. The endgame turns all this up to 11, so be looking forward to that. But yeah, despite outward appearances this game is actually extremely fun!

Starting the upwards route from the Split, we traverse the Wall of Sorrow, aptly named. Lots of bird-like creatures make it an interesting place to work through.

Psychedelic Eyeball's review of The End is Nigh is subtitled "I Wanna Be the Meat Boy" because of its reliance on precision platforming. He wasn't that big of a fan of it, got a big ol' "eh" from him. He streamed it but I think an LP format is much easier to watch, so I'll make sure to catch up with this in due time.

Thanks! Yeah, I've noticed almost everyone seems to be simply posting VODs straight from Twitch; most of the time I end up editing out at least a third of the raw footage simply because it's needless failure, a luxury that you can't get from those.
He makes a lot of good points there. I haven't really been thinking critically, mostly because I haven't tried any of the life-based stuff yet. At the very least the standard game is a blast to go through.

Time to grab the head of our deceased friend! The S.S. Exodus area is seemingly even more challenging than the Machine, although somewhat more linear. However, I find quite a few detours for secrets ranging from the mundane mega tumors to a completely new Unknown area.

Sorry for the late posting—here we take the final of the three paths down into the Hollows! Some tricky enemy hopping and annoying boiling water make this a bit of a pain to navigate, but nothing we can't handle. I actually full-clear this area, grabbing every mega tumor and the cart.

Wrapping up the last of these worlds, we grab a fly-infested torso from the depths of what appears to be hell. After this one I intend on going back and rounding up all those bits and pieces we missed before proceeding with the story!

Right? And I've only seen one other episodic LP like this (and a relative surplus of twitch VODs).
Thank you all for the support! This latest video should provide a good deal of closure, tying up a lot of loose ends. Now that I know the ins and outs of finding secrets, we've gone and cleaned up every tumor, cartridge, and Unknown level from those first two worlds.

It's cool to see which things you blow through that I spent forever on, and vice versa. That mega tumor where you had to climb up a tower of clouds through poison gas took me a million tries.

It seems like distinguishing whether or not a place is safe from poison is pretty tricky for a lot of people. The gas hitboxes are pretty weird too which doesn't help.

Well, here it is. Anyone who may have thought this would be the end of the game is in for a wild ride! Somehow, a second nuclear winter was unleashed upon the land, and now we have to navigate a much tougher version of the game, using our previously gathered tumors as lives!

The second world in The Future is a bit of a break from the sudden difficulty spike in Anguish, although those little meowing, charging lumps can be a pain. We're getting a pretty massive cartridge collection!

And so we've reached the Future equivalent to the Overflow. Instead of acid water and poison gas, we just have fish and some friendly faces. These fish are deceptively nimble though, and won't hesitate to track you down, making a lot of these puzzles relatively tricky!

Well, this looks like the penultimate level of the game. The difficulty of secrets and the levels in general sort of hits a spike here, so pardon my anger for a bit here... The level design is actually really reaching a peak though, with a multitude of new gimmicks and things that work quite interestingly together.

I gave these a quick shot just now, but it looks like the pipes you might be talking about are specifically designed to be non-grabbable. The jumps might technically be possible, but it doesn't look worthwhile.

This is it! I had figured out the two-way level design earlier, but this game-over timer is a whole new layer of fun. It may be possible to both get the cartridge and complete the remaining levels before the time runs out, but I'm not of that caliber. We also get a sneak peek at the true final level of the game! Next time I'll begin doing the cartridges.

Mraagvpeine posted:

I don't think that's wind pushing you, but rather gravitational pull from the glowing ball. Speaking of, I wonder what that ball looks like as the timer goes down and the screen starts shaking. And I'm glad you're going to go play those cartridges. I'd hate it if you tried to play that final level without any lives.

Interestingly enough, the orb doesn't change at all, and you can see the glow approach from the left side of the screen even while the orb is there. I also found that if you jump into the orb when it's too late, you can get a game over and interrupt the lives-running-down animation.

Sorry for the relatively muted commentary, I was pretty sleep-deprived for this one. Anyways, here are the first three cartridges: Mortaman, Blaster Massacre, and River City Rancid, from the first three worlds of the game. Each of the four "achievements" attached to them earns a bonus "extra credit" tumor, which is used in that Secret Place we found earlier. Although I got Unbreakable (no death) on Mortaman, Unbreakable doesn't look very practical for the future carts as they are a great deal more difficult. Plus, it doesn't even earn you a bonus tumor!

Two carts this time; Catastrovania and Dig Dead from The Hollows and Golgotha, respectively. These are certainly following a similar "difficulty curve," if you can call it that, to their equivalent overworld levels.

Ingenious move to cut down recording sessions to a manageable sub-1 hour duration: Just play one cartridge!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEE9-mPvVt8
Of course then the finished product is a mere 16 minutes. Action packed, though. This cart is pure platforming, no enemies at all (the overworld from which it came, The Wall of Sorrow, had plenty of birds) yet it manages to be very tough.

The cart from world "seven" (the last cart I actually got, but the game goes in the order of golgotha, ss exodus, and the machine) is a somewhat underwhelming one, using only the standard turrets rather than throwing in some bouncing cannonballs to the mix. Regardless, it's cleared with about the same amount of effort as the more recent ones. I went less heavy on the footage cutting, so as to artificially extend the length of the video.

Straight to the ending in this one. With 28 tumors in hand, Nevermore felt just right in terms of difficulty.

A cool little touch in how that one NPC had mentioned "something about a fingernail," and now we see that anecdote in the "true" ending!
