Returning after a couple years away from the game....everything is different. It looks like new season will start in a bit over a week so I'm going to mess around with some of my old builds. Would it be worth making a brand new character and playing through before the season starts to help figure out all the new thing?

Looking at version history I think I stopped shortly after Version 1.1.0 Sacrifice of the Vaal so early 2014. Have ~20 characters ranging from a few abandon early to a couple at 80+ but all have earned free respecs with all the changes.

Easiest thing to do to get your bearings before abyss league would be to make a new character and play through again. They've added an absolute ton of content since you last played, and they've actually also added a tutorial system that is half decent. Your old high level characters are probably sitting in the epilogue area right now and I'm not sure how GGG handled the quest completion status for old characters. Trying to rebuild an old character and get it working at a basic level would be more confusing than just starting from scratch at this point.
Played around for a couple hours and respec'd my summoner and righteous fire guys to run around a bit and see what's different. I'm using old gear of course but RF seems to be nerfed a bit (expected) and summoner is maybe a little weaker. I need to figure out the class ascension thing so will probably start a new build just to run though and see how things have changed.

Good news is my reflect/cwdt/thorns build is still as fun an inefficient as ever

Could you build this along the lines of the old detonate dead elemental proliferation builds? Volatile dead - elemental proliferation - increased burning - fire penetration - conc effect - increase AoE May not work but maybe it's a starting point. I tried one of these in 1.1 or something whenever detonate dead showed up and it was great

For pure filling the screen with crap, not necessarily super effective, CWDT Hiltless cyclone does pretty good. Constant spew of EK (nova), bladefall, blade fury, ice nova, light nova, glacial cascade and vortex. Mine's physical based but you could do a spell based as well and have spells for more flash.

I play on a laptop touch pad, other than lack of middle button and being not very precise it isn't bad. Biggest hurdle is if I change my flask layout between characters. This league I did two main builds RF and Summoner then a few test for fun builds.
LL RF/SR - powerful, very fast but I need to finish gearing because at 8k ES T10 is about limit
Solar Guard Summoner - steam rolls everything with ~120c worth of gear

Hiltless CWDT - vaal pact nerf hurt and I never finished gearing or doing the last two labs but it'll clear up to T5 quickly with a lot of flash
Ice Nova - ~250k PoB with charges but not enough defense/life, I'll probably try going a different route on this one next league
Piscator Wander - fast, expensive, not bad but didn't love it
Crit Dark Pact Totems - good mindless clearing speed, single target isn't bad but not great with super budget gear

I'm loving loving it, I've always wanted to play something that just kind of doesn't die, even with gear that doesn't cost much. Like, I'm not fully tanked against elemental, and things as big as Izaro can still do too much damage for now, but trash mobs do nothing, and physical bosses do essentially nothing.

Like, I don't mind not being able to wipe entire screens at once, I've never been a "want to run maps over and over and over" since my playtime is relatively limited/stop and start.

It's also great in this league since going slower is actually a boon sometimes.

I beat Kitava easier than ever then went straight to Merc lab runs. Did 5 back to back easy then moved gear over from my totems guy and did another even easier. Got a couple levels out of it and some currency. I figure at this rate by the time I hit 70 I'll be able to jump into uber runs. This is the tanky lab runner I was looking for.

Need to pick up a good 5L base, a couple greed essences and see if I can get lucky...or just setup a live search for 2k+ armour and 100+ life :effort: I did notice the crab armour (https://pathofexile.gamepedia.com/Craiceann%27s_Carapace) doesn't seem like a terrible option and I saw a 5L at 45c yesterday.

That's what I'm doing. There's nothing particularly outrageous about it; The Vertex with +VD is by far the most expensive and not necessary for the build to function, and will be the last thing I get if I ever get it. Two level 4 Enlightens, an Anger leech Watcher's Eye, and a 6L Shavs. Some random level 21 gems (of which really just Blood Magic is necessary) but otherwise is quite doable in my budget.

The more I thought about it, GMP for an Occultist makes sense considering Frenzy is passing along two turbocharged curses that give the explosions when mobs die. So it's not an entirely wasted socket, but it's not like area clearing is a concern. I might just get a regular Shavs for a few chaos and upgrade later.

Respecced to this today to give it a shot, it's a touch faster than ice nova. Just a note for anyone making this If you put blood magic (19+), herald of ash, purity in vertex you can get by with a non level enlighten and no lvl 21 blood magic.

Grelwood MS JUGG, I respecced my AW chieftain into this and am really enjoying it. Gear is cheap other than the elder rings, it'll run lab easily and up to red maps with <100c worth of gear - https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2125173/page/1
ED/Contagion Occultist, eventually go LL. I've never played one before but they look like a unique play style and should scale well
KB/Barrage bow that eventually transitions to wands
RF JUGG

Either way I'm planning on playing straight through to maps at a minimum. I'd like to get uber trials and get a run in before I call it a night.

What I'm thinking might actually work the best for overall clearing/bossing is to use Bloodseeker + Death's Hand with Reave / Vaal Reave for clearing the map (attacks should take up the whole screen with 8 stacks), then switch over to Scourge + Bloodseeker and Dual Strike for the boss fight.
Found this build the other day after bloodseeker talk, may run it as league starter. PoB puts Death's Hand as pretty drat good then use a enemies explode stat stick for clearing:

code:
Weapon set 1 (AoE Clear): BloodSeeker + Stat Stick that has "Enemies killed explode dealing 5% of their Life as Fire Damage"

Weapon set 2 (Single-Target Bosses): BloodSeeker + Stat stick that has "Gain x% of Physical Damage as Extra Fire/Cold/Lightning Damage"
OR
Weapon set 2 (Single-Target Bosses): BloodSeeker + Death's Hand (1c) - that'll work just as well if not better than a single %gained stat.

I unchecked leeching in options since you have instant leech from Bloodseeker damage, and checked Ignite and Chilled since your build uses Hatred and Herald of Ash.

Yup, I usually had 3-5 leveled skills in my inventory on my totem Heiro in beastiary. Switch and compare between maps or when I feel like having single target or better clearing. Just spec generic totem damage, casting speed and crit then rest in life and don't worry. I was running t10's with no issues in a tabula so gem color wasn't even an issue.

I'll say it again, arc totems was strong before the buff but with the new stuff it'll be even better. As it was I was clearing t10 as fast as I could put down totems but boss damage was garbage if it was just the boss. I used my totem guy, primarily arc, to setup elder ring and farm it last league.

That said I'm still not sure wtf I'm starting with until league notes. RF Jugg or Bloodseeker Champ are top of the list but arc totems or mines should be strong as hell. I don't have a leveled champ to play with and none of my marauders have free respec right now.

For enchants you can go with common uniques or buy high ilvl white helms that are popular. Had planned, weeks ago, starting league with ED/Contagion trickster since I'd never done it before. I still may but it seems unlikely and I'm not sure which of the following three...

RF JUGG - every league I haven't made a RF character I've wished I had so maybe start with one? Based on the basic 3.2 meta https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1985355/page/1
Grelwood MS - did this in beastiary and it's strong as hell, minor fps issues on my craptop. https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2125173/page/1
Bloodseeker BF Champ - tried it on my berserker and it was strong, should only be better as champ. https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2050203

So as someone who usually starts with a summoner I'm not sure. All can do basically all content and scale with $$$. Mapping isn't super fast on any but it isn't painfully slow either, uber is farmable as well with all three.
