There's like 3 different explanations in the last few posts of why and how people might enjoy this red letter media stuff and they all sound like warnings or threats. We're sometimes making fun of how Star Trek aliens are just "dudes with forehead ridges", why don't they do a truly alien alien for a change? Well, I'm trying to imagine the mind of a person that might enjoy RLM, and that feels like a deeply alien mind to me. Utterly inconceivable, incommensurable.

I think you can just feel alienated because somehow a ton of people seem to be really into it. There should be a Black Mirror or Orville episode about "the whole youtube thing" actually. Not about how Milkshake Duck is Racist or found a dead person and put them on youtube, but just about how weird the whole thing is even besides for the scandals.

Just to confuse matters more, I'll say that RLM videos are very hit or miss. I love their Plinkett reviews since they really shine when they actually get off of their asses and do in-depth analysis, and some of their satire is all right (like the nerd crew), but all their other stuff is just their opinions about some poo poo or another and oftentimes I don't agree with what they're saying. They can have their own opinions of course, but it's not really fun to watch a video of some nerd talking about some poo poo when they're not really contributing anything insightful or new, particularly when you don't agree. This Discovery / Orville video is pretty much that. If Mike wants to be a dumb picky nerd who can't enjoy the Orville because he recognizes the ideas they're using, then whatever, he can do him. But that's a stupid reason to not like the show, especially since they're not just recycling old plot ideas without changing them or putting a new spin on them.

Red Letter Media is a real mixed bag but I will still watch their stuff occasionally. The bits with Mike (taller guy from this video) and Jay (not appearing in this video) are decent because the two of them have sufficiently different opinions that they keep each other in line. I've enjoyed a lot of their reviews, the ones that they do in the dumb VCR repairman framing skit, and I've learned about some movies that I wouldn't otherwise have seen but really enjoyed (like It Follows) from their show. I can't stand Rich (the short fat goon from this video) or his hyena laugh and when he and Mike get on a roll about Star Trek (which Jay doesn't watch) it is loving awful. Also every bit of the Mr. Plinkett meta-story about him killing hookers in his basement is painfully stupid and un-woke but at least they've quit doing it.

The dumb thing is the Orville mostly doesn't have dick jokes (I don't think someone saying "that guy's a dick" counts) and especially doesn't have fart jokes.(I can't think of any, except possibly Mercer saying the Moclan wine came out of him after all or Gordon saying he needed a new pair of pants after a rough landing)

Mike made one point that I agree with that Seth made a Star Trek show and then went "oh poo poo, I forgot I sold this as a comedy" and then threw some jokes in. That's not a fault of The Orville, and more a problem with how Fox was willing to give him a show.
